It was while he was thinking to himself that he first noticed the smoke. He watched it with interest until he realised who it was as she took form. He smirked. She'd come to rescue him. A lot sooner than he thought too. And he hadn't expected her to be the one of all people to save him. But he was glad that he was being saved. And he also knew that it would be at a heft price. Or so he assumed - assumed all of it.

To most men, what she did next would have scared them half to death into screaming. O'Leary wasn't scared. In fact he enjoyed the bloodied display. He was smiling by the end of it.

"I didn't get myself into this mess. Joshua got me into this mess. I'm going to kill him when I find him." He told her. "And then I have a few people you can also do that to, if you want." He added.

"Of all the people I thought that would save me, honestly you weren't the top of the list on that one. So what made you come?"

A smirk found its way to Valathae's face as she made her way over to the bars of the cage. "I simply felt obliged to come." she said, laughing, "After all... I made you a promise, did I not? I couldn't let you be taken in, to be questioned until you squealed on every little thing that you knew... no, certainly not."

She paused, bringing one clawed extremity up to her chin. "But, you are mistaken on one thing. I'm not here to save you, O'Leary. You made a mess. People are talking about this, about Solinus, and the word on the tip of their tongue is slavers. And the fiasco with the ambassador... well, it's really quite an embarrassment for anyone in power here."

The demoness stepped forwards, her form passing through the bars of the cage smokily before reforming on the other side. "You didn't think that I was joking, did you, when I said that I would not hesitate to kill you if you caused me trouble? No, Kenneth, you aren't going to prison. You're skipping that part and going straight to the hell you belong in."

O'Leary frowned as Valanthe spoke up. What was she talking about? None of that had been him. It had been Joshua. It had been Joshua's fault. He'd only got involved to finish it before it had gotten worse.

"Hey, wait a minute." Kenneth started. "That was Joshua. Josh brought her to me. I had to do something to correct it. I didn't know that it would be the talk! And I haven't said anything about you or anything else for that matter. Instead all I talked about was Josh and Bray. I didn't even find out until earlier that Josh was a dirty undercover cop."

He had no idea still how wrong he was about Joshua.

"I knew you were serious but this isn't my mess! I swear it isn't. And I swear I won't say anything about you either! I promise." Now O'Leary was scared.

"That's the thing you see..." Valathae tilted her head, "Joshua has already been taken care of. I didn't even have to dirty my hands with that one. Shintenchi dealt with him neatly. Barbaric practice, beheading, but certainly effective at stopping people talking."

She smiled once again, "And I'm afraid I just can't take that risk. I've got far too much riding on my identity remaining firmly unidentified. I can't imagine I'd be popular for very long if it got out I'd known about you all along and done nothing."

Stepping forwards, she placed her hand on O'Leary's neck, "It's a good job none of the rest of your little gang ever met me, or I'd have a lot more cleaning up to do. For what it's worth, I'm terribly sorry it's come to this. Anything you want to say before the end, Kenneth? Give me something poetic to remember you by."

"Joshua is dead?" His voice betrayed both shock and fear. It was only elevated when a hand was placed on his neck. He knew nothing he could say would matter. Nothing would change this. He was going to die. The only thing that could change was how he got revenge on Bray and Lena. And he would get revenge.

"I want you to make sure Bray rots in prison. And I want him to watch that cheating little bitch of mine die, along with his kid. Make it happen." O'Leary spoke callously. He wanted them dead in revenge. He didn't care that on his hit list was a woman and child. His goal was to have Bray suffer for the rest of his life for sleeping with his wife and producing a child, and not O'Leary doing it instead.

"I'll arrange for that to go on your tombstone, shall I? Kenneth O'Leary, so much of a scumbag his last words were asking for the people closest to him to be killed. I can at least take comfort in the knowledge that nobody is going to miss you."

And with that, the demoness brought a claw through his neck in a swift and deadly slash, severing it in a single clean cut that splattered blood onto the bars of his cage.

"Goodbye, Kenneth." she said quietly, as his head rolled to a halt, before fading back into smoke and flowing out of the vehicle.

Liam dropped a box in the middle of his new apartment in Azure Heights, eyes peering out of a window towards the setting sun behind buildings. He hadn't brought much with him, the apartment was furnished already, plus he could purchase new clothes and hair products while he was in Asteria City.

He wasn't living in the woods for a year, just getting out of Wing City while the war with the Tong died down and expanding the family business to new places.

The young Irishman turned to his apartment door, it was open wide allowing anyone who was walking by to see what the Irishman was up to. He wasn't doing much, but sometimes you just needed privacy. Liam approached the door, slamming it closed before he turned back to the window.

He began to approach said window, eyes drifting down towards the floor of the city as he moved.

"This city's going to be mine soon. I can't fuckin' wait." He said to himself.

Shelly Reed pulled into the reserved parking lot of the Asteria City NPA field office building and turned the engine of her car off. She stifled a yawn into the back of her arm before she grabbed a brief case from the passenger side seat and popped the door open. It was still early in the day, but already the heat was rising to stifling levels and with the air conditioner broken in her car it had been a sweltering trip to the office today.

She was tired from too many late hours in the office, but work hadn't been showing any sign of letting up. Things had been piling up on her since their primary suspect in the slave trafficking ring had come up dead under her watch. The matter had created enough of a public stir that it had taken her out of the running for the new NPA director position, but she couldn't blame Alison. The controversy could well have cost her the elections.

She pushed the car door closed and the vehicle gave a faint beep as the alarm armed itself before she deposited her keys into her jacket pocket and headed around towards the front of the building.

Dante stood on a corner across the road from the NPA field office right there in Asteria City, his eyes focused on it for only a moment before he looked around at all of the cars and people making their way to work and appointments. The Afro-Spanish man took a step back from the street as white van sped down the road.

People nearly crashed into each other, and some actually bumped other vehicles, as the van cut through traffic and almost caused a pileup. Angry people shouted and yelled at the van's driver, some whipping out their phones to call the police and report a hit and run. The law wouldn't have to look very far as the van turned off from the road and headed straight towards the NPA office's front entrance.

The driver ducked down, clearly hoping to avoid bullets, debris and glass when, if, he made it all the way to his target.

Dante began to cross the street as this happened, delivery trucks already on the scene breaking off from the normal flow of traffic and moving up closer to the building. More began to approach from other directions. In total there had to be about ten trucks, each one blocking traffic. The drivers of each truck jumped out, quickly scrambling to open their truck's back doors.

Out came men and women dressed in dark blue jumpsuits and wearing armored vests. Most of them carried rifles, though a slect few carried what seemed to be grenade launchers. Those with the launchers fired them in many different directions, mostly towards the NPA office and the street.

The fired shells didn't explode normally, they did burst open to spread tear gas. The attackers were hoping to confuse the people around them, keep them from knowing what hit them until they were hit ten times over if it could be managed.

"We're ready to move." One of the attackers said, she and the others taking cover behind their trucks and newly abandoned vehicles.

"Give the order."

The swerving van was the first sign that something was amiss as Shelly was caught in her tracks. Her initial assumption was that it was a vehicle out of control, rather than the start of something more sinister, even as it hit the stone steps and bounced precariously into a railing. It lost most of its momentum clearing the steps, and the building itself was sturdy enough that it came to a rather abrupt and forceful stop as it collided with the concrete walls that formed the framework of the doors.

The audible sound of folding metal colliding with concrete and broken glass fell quiet as the van sat, partially lodged in the front entrance of the building, and for a moment it seemed that the crisis had passed. Given that the van more or less barred entrance into the building - as well as departure - it would take climbing over the vehicle to enter or leave the building, unless one wanted to climb through the twisted metal and broken glass of the front windshield.

Outside, people gawked in dismay at the car accident, still oblivious that it was only the precursor to something more sinister.

It was Shelly who took note of the other vehicles breaking free from the traffic and she dropped down behind a parked police car on the street side. No one as seated within it, and its driver was likely inside, but it would afford her some cover from hostile eyes as she drew her firearm from her jacket. Flipping the safety off, she threw a glance around the bumper of the car to see vehicles congregating at the front of the NPA office. There were shouts from all directions as people panicked and fled in all directions from the scene.

Shelly had  a clear shot at any number of the men spilling out of the back of the vehicles, but she was alone out here if they returned fire. She flipped her phone out and dialed in a number to report the situation to the people still inside the building. It would perhaps provide them a faster reaction time, knowing what they were facing outside. The van lodged in the doorway would provide a barricade of sorts against those trying to enter the building, but the security guards would likely be outgunned if the men made it inside the building.

She had her gun in hand while she stayed on the phone reporting everything she was seeing, and she had the sense to know that her eyes where more valuable than her gun at the moment.

She ducked back behind the car as she reached out telepathically to try and glean the surface thoughts and intentions from the men spilling out of the vehicles in front of the building. She would only have a few moments though to pick up what she could before the fired shells began to billow gas outwards across the street.

Shelly threw her coat over her face as the gas overtook her, but it swiftly marred her vision as the fumes filled her eyes and her lungs. The coat afforded only minimal protection as it burned down her throat, leaving her coughing violently with tears stinging at her eyes and blurring her vision. Every instinct screamed at her to get out of the gas, but it was everywhere.

There was a voice speaking her name on the phone that she put back to her ear.

"They're using tear gas," she managed to choke out before she found herself doubled over coughing and retching onto the hot pavement.

___________________

Shelly's timely phone call afforded some measure of comprehension as to what the NPA would be facing if the attackers breached the building, but it would take time to reinforce the front lobby. Gas masks where being distributed to those being sent to assist at the front, but for the moment only two security guards stood between the attackers and the rest of the NPA building. Fortunately the van provided a barricade that would stem the speed at which they could flood the building, and both guards had taken a knee at the top of the interior lobby steps, with a pair of white marble pillars for cover. The interior steps where too spacious to bottleneck the attackers should they make it over the van and into the lobby, but both security guards where prepared to fire at anyone trying to clear the van to gain entrance.

"Go." Dante said, the blue-clad terrorists tossing each other gasmasks and slipping them on to avoid being brought down by their own tear gas. That would be embarrassing. "Okay. Let's move!" The female leader commanded, the Jupiter Corporation assault force moving in towards the NPA building slowly. Every once in awhile two soldiers breaking off in search of other exits, entrances into the buildings sub-levels.

They couldn't afford to be ambushed, the terrorsts wanted to remain in control of the situation. They were very clearly trained for this kind of event. Many of them were former soldiers who had become mercenaries or disillusioned by war and it's high costs. A far cry from your run-of-the-mill terrorists.

The thoughts Shelly picked up from the attackers ranged from apathetic and greedy, probably from the mercenaries among their ranks, to excited about the attack and the prospect of violence. But, a few stood out.

'Get in. Destroy it all.' repeated over and over as if someone was trying to remember it, trying to stick to the game plan.

The back doors to the totaled van flew open, the driver tossing himself out onto the ground. He was bloodied from the crash, a hand covering his mouth to protect from the gas. He stood up quickly, rushing away from the scene of the 'accident' and the tear gas.

"Inside." The female commander ordered, several of the terrorists climbing ito the van from the now open back doors. The soldiers got up to the front, aiming their weapons out of the busted windshield. "Surrender now! I promise we won't hurt you if you do!." One of them shouted to the security guards in the lobby.

"Veronica!" One of the Jupiter Corporation soldiers to the rear of the group shouted, eyes focused on Shelly. He was cautiously moving towards her, not taking any chances. She could have been a black belt in some strange martial art that makes heads explode. "We've got one here." He said, raising his rifle on Shelly.

The female commander, Veronica, broke away from her people at the lobby entrance to sprint towards Shelly and the terrorist watching her cough up her lungs. "Hands up and drop everything your hands." Veronica said to Shelly, "If you have any weapons on you tell me now and I won't have you shot. I'll get you a mask if you're honest."

Veronica didn't seem to be any taller than Shelly, blonde hair and green eyes peeking from beneath her own gasmask.

"You only get one chance to become my hostage." Veronica added.

The NPA's saving grace to the surprise attack continued to be Shelly's capacity to monitor the movement of the attackers from outside. It was she who warned the interior that several of the terrorists numbers had split off from the main assault, and to warn those within the building to expect attacks against other entrance points.

Her reports where broken up with the gagging induced by the tear gas. She needed to get out of this smog... Her eyes were red and puffy and tears ran freely until everything was just a blur.

When the man stepped out of the haze and Shelly could make out the blurry outline of the rifle pointed at her, she froze as best she could between the retching. She moved slowly, laying the gun down on the pavement at her side while returning the cellphone to her pocket.

She wasn't a moron. She could barely see, let alone shoot, and the man had the shot. If he hadn't taken it, he likely wasn't planning to.

By the time Veronica reached her and started barking orders she had her eyes pinched shut against the tear gas, but it did nothing to relieve the irritant.

"Look, I'm not a part of this. I was just on my way to work," she managed to utter. "I don't have any other weapons."

She doubled over, her forehead against the pavement and one arm across her stomach as she warred against the nausea.

"I'm a security guard over at the social security office on State Ave..." she lied.

An NPA agent might make a valuable hostage, but a security guard less so... if they bought the lie, and if they didn't search her and find her badge inside the wallet in her coat. Two big ifs, but it was the best she had under the circumstances.

"It's your lucky day." Veronica told Shelly, stepping closer to the woman and reaching out to pull her to her feet. "Give me your phone. Everyone has a cellphone." She said, "Get her a mask." The woman ordered the Corporation soldier, "Yes, sir." He responded, casting a glance at Shelly before he jogged off towards one of the trucks the attackers arrived in.

Veronica stared out from beneath her gasmask's visor at Shelly, her blue, formerly green, eyes never leaving the woman even once. It was clear that Veronica was trying to gauge Shelly. There were things that made her suspicious of the woman.

What security guard carries a briefcase? Why was this so-called security guard going to work from the NPA HQ? As far as Veronica was concerned, her new hostage was a liar. But, she'd keep that to herself for now. She now. One NPA agent didn't matter much. Veronica's leader had a bigger picture to paint.

When the earlier soldier returned with a gasmask, Veronica snatched it away. "Put this on." She said to Shelly, holding the gasmask out for her to take. "And then follow me. I need a bargaining chip."

When Veronica asked for the phone, Shelly knew the gig was up - if Veronica had believed it in the first place at all. She had left it on the line, in the hopes that the people on the other end would realize what was going on, or overhear something of use.

The motion of being pulled to her feet was making her nausea nigh unbearable. She put her hands on the trunk of the car to keep on her feet before fishing the phone out of her pocket and placing it on the hood.

She might as well have been blind by this point. Even the gas mask couldn't relieve the irritation of the chemicals that had already gotten into her eyes. She had to be led along by her arm as she struggled to see through the haze of blurred vision.

"I'll let you flush your eyes when we get inside." Veronica told Shelly, grabbing the woman's phone. She looked it over, making sure to end the call. She slipped the phone into a pocket, then took hold of Shelly's arm. "Come on." Veronica ordered, pulling Shelly along towards the front entrance of the NPA headquarters.

"How's it going up there?" She said, her earpiece transmitting her words to her men in a standoff with the initial security guards. "We're at an impasse. The guards aren't going to be surrendering. If we can get the van to start we can probably back it up a little, make soom room to shoot inside." A man responded.

"Tell them we have hostages. We'll kill one every minute if they don't stand down until they stand down." Veronica ordered, "Understood, sir."

The attackers at the front entrance, some of them climbing atop the van and staying low as not to give the security guards any easy shots. "Hey!" One of the soldiers in the van shouted to the security guards, "We've got hostages. We're going to kill one every minute until you stand down and let us in!" He told them.

He could only hope the security guards were bleeding hearts or off-duty cops. They'd care too much about civilian lives to let them die. That was the hope at least.

One of the guards had his hand to his ear, as he rapidly spoke into his ear piece. Both security guards where unnerved by the threat, and the one on the headset was the first to shout a response.

"The director will engage in negotiations, but you are to maintain your current position," the guard shouted. "If any hostages are killed, or if you attempt for force entry into the building, there will be no negotiations."

It wasn't a surrender, but it was an offer of a cease fire.

Meanwhile outside the building Shelly attempted to reach out to the director with her telepathy, but she was met with nothing more than painful feedback. Fortunately the nausea it might have otherwise instilled was masked by the nausea of the tear gas. Without her phone she couldn't get through the security measures in place on the building to contact the director.

All she could do for the moment was wait.

The last thing LaDarro Gorham remembered before the alarm sounded was the smarmy expression on the reporter's face. He was a young white man with a carefully pressed shirt and combed brown hair, sitting with stiff, uncomfortable posture across from LaDarro's desk. The question had been, "What do you think this means for future generations of TNG employees, Mr. Gorham?" But before LaDarro could produce an answer professional by some objective standard, before he could find a way to encapsulate his two years as the NPA's only openly transgender field office director into a sound byte suitable for the press, before the smug-looking reporter could rephrase the question in yet another unbearable round, the door to the office flung open.

LaDarro was saved by Andrea Titon, the TIB's errant cyberintelligence expert, whose annoyed expression seemed quite incongruent with the sound of an enormous collision from out the window. Titon held up a phone. "Shelly Reed called. Whichever fucker was supposed to answer this didn't." The reporter stammered out a half-hearted apology, rising from his seat as Titon spoke. "Sit your ass down; I wasn't talking to you. Gorham, she says there're something like ten trucks out there."

"There are -- the fuck?" LaDarro stood from his seat, moving toward the window when Titon grabbed him by the arm, pulling him back. "And -- who let you in the building?" His eyes moved rapidly over Titon, taking in her unkempt hair, wrinkled t-shirt, stained cargo pants, and black military boots with caked-over mud, wondering how in the hell she'd thought this appropriate attire for any kind of interagency meeting. It was a sharp contrast from his own smartly tailored suit. He turned toward the window again, but this time Titon hit him, hard, to the face.

"Are you fucking stupid?"

"The window's bulletproof," LaDarro replied, his voice tight, eyes flashing.

"Doesn't matter. Bulletproof means shit when the explosives start flying, and who the fuck knows what they've got out there." Titon gave LaDarro another shove away from the window, eyeing the reporter with suspicion as he sank lower into his chair, perspiration shining all over his forehead.

"Never mind, all right?" LaDarro shook his head. "Tell me what's going on out there, and don't even think about hitting me again."

"Motherfucking tear gas, that's what's going on." Titon relayed the information Shelly had given, but then the call ended as abruptly as it had come in. "Don't just stand there, moron. Get your fucking ducks in a fucking row, and fucking handle this shit." She turned, starting to leave LaDarro's office, and then paused to point at the reporter on her way out. "You ever use a gun? Cause if not, then start looking for hiding places and something to cover your fucking mouth with. Unless you actually want to die. Hey, one less reporter, right? Not my fucking problem." Titon strode through the door, speaking with her back to the slack-jawed field office director. "Gorham! The fuck are you waiting for?"

LaDarro picked up the phone to dial the security desk in the lobby, his expression smoldering. His day had already been off to a bad start with the reporter's insensitive questions, and now it seemed bound to get worse. Never better, always worse.

It took less than five minutes for Titon to summarily notify the security guards at each of the four side-doors of impending assault. On their side, those doors were reinforced steel and kept magnetically locked throughout the day. On the terrorists' side? There were a pithy two guards assigned to each. The imposing structure was built to keep intruders out, not a military force. But while striding through the hallways to the weapons locker, Titon cocked a grin. If their assailants had brought military force, why shouldn't they return the favor? She tapped out a message to the nearest TAF base requesting immediate support. The NPA, she thought, her smile disappearing for a scowl, was not armed to fend off a small army. They were fucking cops. Titon grabbed one of only a handful of automatic weapons from the locker, checking the magazine and grabbing another few rounds of ammunition. She headed toward the back entrance, where the loading dock led into the field office. By her reckoning, and the blueprints she'd found a few hours ago in the basement, that'd be the weakest point after the lobby. If the attackers were smart, and it seemed like they were, they'd head there next.

Titon passed a corner, giving the frightened intern a wicked grin. "Time to kill some motherfucking terrorists." Besides, the actual TNG military would be on its way by now, and she didn't want them to have all the fun. Titon had had enough of the NPA technician's sniveling complaints and excuses. She wanted to put some bullets into some warm bodies, and, well, the present situation gave a nearly perfect excuse.

"They aren't budging." One of the terrorists told Veronica as she approached with Shelly, "They want to negotiate." He continued, "They won't. They're waiting for help to arrive. We'll have to move as soon as we can." Veronica responded, glancing over at Shelly. "What kind of structure and doors are we working with?" She asked.

"Typical stone and metal. The doors are still, possibly reinforced." One of the soldiers answered, "Alright, get some C4 on the doors if we have any to spare. We can probably breach from multiple points, create some chaos for our guys to slip in and work Get on it." Veronica ordered, several of the soldiers heading back towards the other doors they had scouted earlier.

"When the police and military arrive, they'll likely be ready for our gas. We'll switch to heavy weapons. Make sure we have a clear path out." A terrorist said, eyes falling on Shelly. It was barely visible, but he raised an eyebrow at the sight of her. "What will we do with her? Keep her for safe passage? Bargaining chip?" He asked.

"Undecided. For now she's my human shield." Veronica said, "Shield, empty your pockets and show me some ID." Veronica said to Shelly.

Shelly grimaced as her car keys and wallet joined the items she was relieved of.

She had nothing to flush her eyes out with, and though the gasmask was helping to prevent further accumulation of the irritant in her eyes and nose, she was far from a hundred percent.

"You're making a mistake, and if you don't stand down, we're all going to die," she tried to warn Veronica.

She too knew that the military would be there soon, and when shots started being exchanged out here in the streets... she was just as vulnerable in the crossfire as they where.

It had been seven long months since she had left Arendelle. and returned to her homecountry, onlyto get expelled from her homeland by unwanted force, which ended up sending her through a wormhole or the like. She settled in the city of Astria in a suberb of Azure Heights.

But that didnt worry Key in any manner, it was the cargo sent to her from unknown means she had to keep track of. And was at that moment using her six wheel drive and mostly self coded legacy tank she'd found on the side of the roads and restarted it, and oddly found it reactive to her touch so perfectly.

It gave her a means to get around easier.

And now she was headed to a area just within the Azure Heights boundary line. A place The Scorpion had requested a meet, and all the better to go there before he could get there was her best plan. So she started off, moving along the road at a smooth clip non trioed to stop her massive transport as it rolled along.

Since she had last seen Mark, or even Elsa or any of the others at Arendelle, Car Key had grown her hair, and changed its color. And since arriving in Astria she had begun working on things more, making it a hobby to collect old unusible ewapons and then rebuilding them into perfectly working weapons to full military standards for a price of whoever wanted them.

But the package had The Scorpion's seal on it, and she knew not to open the case. Instead she went looking for him; and soon fgot the meeting place.

Now it was just a matter of parking the massive three ton transport she had for herself.
