The Multiverse

Setting

The once giant of the space and tech industries in Yellowstone, now stands largely defunct like much of the rest of the system.

After the disappearance of the last remaining member of the founding family, Claire Angelique, the company was forced to shutter its doors. With no to little economy to support it, especially in the face of groups like TechCon, the company wasn't able to survive without a hand at the helm.

"So in truth the ire of your eye happens to be the woman. Of courses Doctor Miyagi will suffer from loss but you seek more." Mr. Bones bean to chuckle and produced from his suit jacket a rather strange red stone only to look upon it as if expecting to see something new and interesting.

"I will rid this Miyagi of Yuriko and then some. Once he comes to you the rest will befall upon him like fate ordained it from high above." The skeletal figure began to mutter a bit as he turned back to look at his contract and offered her his hand. "I will take my payment another time from you. I have much work to do I assure you. I also promise to keep in touch with you on every little thing. Might I ask you something though?"

Claire sighed in frustration, "Perhaps so, yes." Maybe her anger had been targeted had Yuriko instead of Seno, but they both seemed to always find ways to shatter what little calm she tried to build up around herself.

In all honesty she hadn't expected him to take his payment another time, but that suited her just fine. She could hear her sister screaming at her if she got wind of this latest scheme, but in all honestly she realized it wasn't any worse than anything Marlene had ever done. Sadly, it seemed the two were more alike than they cared to admit.

Standing she took the offered hand, only raising an eyebrow at his question "What might that be?"

"How personal do you want this to be?" Mr. Bones was rather upfront and in his mind streamers and gift cards could be used to signify any loss, so long as the final expenses came out on top dollar. "Do you want them to know you brought this upon them or would you like to remain a ghost through it all."

Claire thought for a moment before answering his question. "Yes, for the most part I wish to remain mostly anonymous throughout." She said knowing it was likely cowardly, but she didn't particularly care. "A few personal things here or there is fine, however I do want them to take time in grasping who is behind this."

"Very well." Mr. Bones tightened his grip on his contract just to vanish from her sight. Mr. Bones had plenty of work to do and he aimed to get it done right.

Pesa Gottschalk was more than ready to do this. It was a long term, difficult task, and they had only just gotten Claire McGregor considering this seriously. Or at least it seemed like the woman was taking the idea of becoming an Erutin citizen seriously. It wasn't as if it wasn't a really good idea. With the fall of UCON, the Empire really was the only true powerhouse left. The Aschen didn't come close. Besides, she'd enjoy the benefits of the relaxed Erutin culture. They'd mark the woman down as a dark, and she'd have no issues. She'd be taken as just another one of the strange people the empire had absorbed most recently.

The erutin woman knocked on Claire's door, ready for another long meeting and slogging through the details.

"Enter." Claire said, her tone apathetic and disinterested. This was her fifth meeting of the day, and everyone had wanted to drag each one of them out. She had lost count of the number of times she'd had to explain that her company did not have control over the local jump gates, or that they wanted control over these things when most ships now had slip-space drives.

Sighing and tapping her pen on the desk beside her, she looked out and down at the vast expanse of the city below that was tinged a deep gold from Yellowstone's toxic atmosphere. However, toxic the planet happened to be, Chasm City had managed to cling precariously to life there on the planet for the past several hundred years, carving out an existence there on the planet's surface. The culture had changed over the centuries, especially after the Aschen's occupation and subsequent clamation of it into its outer territories. Chasm City had gone from a rough and tumble city at the edge of the frontier, to something more subdued and defeated.

Pesa offered the other woman a smile as she entered the room. "Hello Ms. McGregor." She greeted politely. "Long day?" It certainly looked to have been one. Well, it was an opportunity to wow and entice. Just because the technology wasn't int he civilian sector yet, and never would be, didn't mean she couldn't use it to try and convince the other woman to join them.

It was the work of seconds to pull out some fruit and a cup of a drink stronger than coffee, but that smelled much the same, from her storage. "Here. This may help." and it was offered freely and out of good will.

Claire returned the smile with a tight lipped one of her own. Clearly she was far from comfortable with having this little time to herself in a day. Normally the days were long, but easy enough. Most things took care of themselves after a while. "Angelique." She corrected, finding that though she was legally and rightfully entitled to the name McGregor, it was difficult to find herself using or even attaching herself to it. "You could say that, please have a seat?" She asked, turning her chair around and motioning to the other to take a seat.

"Ah, uh, thank you?" She said taking the items in question from Pesa and setting them aside for the moment.

She nodded, and took a seat. "Forgive me, Ms. Angelique. Hyphenated last names are not common in the empire, and I'm not yes certain on how to address them." Erutin didn't bother with last names unless you were ennobled. Otherwise, you were simply your first name, and who you were the twin of. Her own last name came from her tenure in Belkan facilities before the empires joined. She was known as Pesa, twin of Oksake in Erutin circles. She also tended to switch to a male form there, but a female form had been suggested for this job.

Something about female solidarity. "Thank you for having me. Have you considered our offer?"

"Of course." Claire nodded. "My mother married into the family when I was very young, however, both my sister and I do not use the name professionally." She explained, before sliding the pen she'd been twirling between her fingers back into a slot on her desk. It soon disappeared neatly, somewhere in the vast expanse of the sleek diamond wood desk. "Hyphenated names are uncommon here, but more than likely more common than in your empire."

What else was she to say? That she was the black sheep of the McGregor family? That their xenophobic, Aschen ways had never suited her? Claire had always been the outsider and in many ways punished, and abused for that status. "But forgive me, I'm deviating from the topic at hand. I have taken the time to consider your offer, but I do have a few questions still."

There were always questions. However Claire Angelique had enough value to the long term plans of the empire that they would, of course, be answered. "Of course, ask away. I'm more than capable of answering your questions. And if I don't know, I can find out in seconds." The implant was very useful that way. Pesa had no doubt that she had back up listening in on this supposedly private conversation already.

Privacy was only an illusion in the empire, after all. Outsiders may forget it, but Pesa had quite literally grown up in a lab. She had no issue with knowing she had no privacy in her life.

Claire's expression turned contemplative for a moment as she considered exactly how to phrase the question she had in mind. "Will I have to uproot all of this?" She asked, meaning her company, her home, her life there on Yellowstone. "Because that would be quite difficult you see, as my family has had this company for generations and I'm the last one." Well, there was still her sister, but her sister was crazy, and more than likely off gallivanting across the stars doing something stupid again. Claire tended to fight more with her sister than get along with her. The two were on vastly different ends of the spectrum.

"Also, while I am quite intrigued by your offers, I am still quite wary of what may happen should I choose to go through with it all. Can you offer me asylum should the Aschen and their empire decide to retaliate?"

"You wouldn't need to uproot at all, unless you wanted to." It was actually preferred she did. After all, having a citizens interests be there meant a legitimate reason for them being there. Pesa considered the notion of retaliation. "And while the empire is not on the best of terms with the Aschen empire, if they choose to retaliate simply because you chose to become our citizen, we would of course protect you. It would be a gross over reaction on their part, and we shield out people well from the horrors that they can unleash." Very well.

Ever since Dev Eru they had worked very hard to shield specifically against Aschen attacks. They'd deploy a fleet to protect the one citizen if it meant going again Aschen scum.

"I see, well that does at least answer that question." Claire said thoughtfully. It seemed at least that the Erutin seemed to somewhat value contributors to their society, and if she didn't have to at least immediately uproot herself or her company. However, there could always be a satellite office created within their empire if it made things easier. Claire just didn't care to remove Baqui from its prime location so close to the Epsilon jump gates and shipping lanes.

"Miss... Gottschalk was it? I am very well aware of the horrors the Aschen can decide to unleash. I am also very well aware of the target I am putting on myself by doing this. All I ask is that if it ever comes to blows, that the Erutin have my back."
