The Multiverse

Setting

Divided down the center with glowing blue geometric sculptures, Besteden Boulevard is as affluent as it is busy. Watch out for crossing shoppers, clueless tourists, careless drivers, and that pothole over there.

The All Mall towers over everything here, and it's fashionable to dress your best and parade about in front of it.

The city was busy enough with tourists and people going about their business that not many noticed the odd trio. Foreigners overloaded with shopping bags heading to and fro, cars zipping up and along, taxis honking, every now and then a blacked out limo. Rayan paused outside of a building with floor to ceiling glass, sapphire blue, unable to be seen through. He jerked his head at the others and ducked inside.

Rayan Doyle has left the area, heading east into Saphira's Speakeasy.
Riska Verket has arrived, coming from Port Kanderdam.

Riska almost forgot to take notice of where she was going one they reached Besteden Boulevard. She stared at the sights around her in awe. Amazed by so many people bustling about; all the new and strange smells. She felt an odd feeling in her stomach, was this excitement? The fact they were trying to find somewhere safe to settle down almost slipped her mind until they reached a magnificent glass building, sapphire blue in colour. Riska found it beautiful. To others it might be the norm, but to someone who used to dwell in the mountains, this was a lot to take it.

Her eyes darted back to Rayan as he signaled them to enter the building. Riska gave him a nod and followed closely behind, look back to make sure Kaden was following too and no one else.

Kaden kept quiet as he followed the two, his concentration instead on the possibility of an ambush. It was unlikely, but there was still a chance - and Kaden needed to make sure he was ready. On top of that he had little to say to either Rayan or Riska. He had gotten involved because of a sense of duty, but other than their predicament he knew nothing about either of them. It was probably safer if none of them talked about themselves - especially for them.

When they finally stopped at the sapphire building, he took one last look around and then followed the two of them inside.

The thirteenth hour struck, and the spirit of chaos stepped out into the crowded street. Discord wore the mask of an older man with slick grey hair and a sharp goatee. He crookened the polka dotted tie that hung from his mismatched tweed jacket and tippity-tapped the sidewalk with his decorative cane. A mischievous glint sparkled in his yellow slitted eyes, but it was tempered with a dastardly cunning that could cut glass.

“It’s been pretty boring here recently. How about we… shake things up a bit…

Discord kicked a pebble with his shiny leather shoe. It flew into the crowd, bounced off a big-wig executive’s briefcase, and rolled into traffic. A car hit the pebble, ricocheting it into a windshield. Though it caused no damage to the glass, the driver was distracted for the split second required for him to rear end another vehicle in front of him. The other driver, in a panic, swerved into a light pole.

The light pole teetered, rusty bolts finally giving way in the collision, and fell like a metallic tree across the intersection. Cars skid and dodged the fallen pole, smashing into other vehicles. Drivers shouted obscenities and horns blared. A few jumped from their cars and strutted about each other like featherless roosters aching for a fight.

“Ahh…” Discord inhaled deeply through his nose. “That’s more like it. A paltry appetizer, though. There’s far more work that needs doing.

Contra watched the chaos unfold from the rooftop. The white cat raised itself to a crouch and darted along the edge of the roof, hopping too far a distance over to the next building and settled on the cornerstone. Mid hop the white cat fizzled into stardust, to those paying close enough attention as below someone swerved into a light pole.

The white cat assembled itself in a high sit and watched as the pole fell with drama. It tangled the intersection in further chaos while Contra searched about for the cause of all of this. Contra's tail flicked. Someone rear-ended someone- but why? How? Traffic was moving so smoothly as it had a tendency to do where people were spending money. It seemed like sabotage. The white cat scanned the crowd for someone that was off.

Discord strutted down the street and hummed a merry tune. He pulled a coin out of his suit jacket, flicked it once, and tossed it behind him where it was found by some passerby. It was not an ordinary coin though - far from it - but a rare collector’s item pulled from space-time out of a bygone era. No doubt it would fetch a hefty price to the right person and make someone a small fortune, but Discord had no idea if it would make it that far. For all he knew, it would wind up being spent in a vending machine or wind up behind someone’s couch cushion for the next twenty years.

But that was half the fun in his book.

He stopped in front of a clothing store and admired the line of men’s jackets on display. Discord stood so that it appeared his hazy reflection would be wearing one of the pieces, and he smirked.

“Not bad, not bad. It could use a little more color… Maybe some non-euclidean angles.”

“I don’t know…” His reflection replied. “It’s a little tight around the waist.”

“Hey, are you saying I’m fat?!”

“Of course not.” Mirror-Discord rolled his eyes. “Just that we should probably lay off the chocolate milkshakes for a bit. Try a new gimmick.”

“Well what would you suggest? The ambient magic here isn’t high enough for too radical conjuration. I have to work with what I have for now.”

“Puh-lease. We’re in a written medium! The possibilities are only limited to what can be described on a page, just as long as we don’t tweak too many noses with our shenanigans. We need to do something new… something we didn’t do back home… but what?”

“Hmm…” Discord stroked his goatee.

Meanwhile, a small crowd had gathered around the lunatic that was seemingly arguing with a mannequin. The morbidly curious watched with disturbed fascination while those with more sense gave him a wide berth.
