Setting
New Dev Eru
New Dev Eru, chosen for its centralized location, and rare in the inner ring uncolonized status, is a desert planet in a fairly small solar system with only two other planets. It is about twice the size of earth, and has about 3 times the gravity.
A single day lasts 29.27 hours and a year lasts 390 days. The planet is made up of 11 continents, which make up 81% of the planet's landmass. Water is plentiful in underground reservoirs, though little water or life is apparent form the surface, with much of the Erutin infrastructure and people living underground.
The plantlike organisms on this planets are largely low to the ground, with trees and wood being rare, though some forests do exist nearer to the poles. Native animals tend to be small in size as well, though some larger ones are found nearer to the poles.
The New Palace is in the northern hemisphere, and while it still lies in the desert, it is in a more habitable region. Much of the above ground life occurs closer to the poles, though there are no settlements in the trees, due to the need to maintain the forests of the planet.
Major exports from this planet include sand, diamonds, and quartz, along with more synthetic materials in the form of nanocloth, which the underground communities produce in abundance. Imports include food, though thanks to advanced hydroponics systems, the planet is largely self sustaining.
Major cities are: Rautuin, Kalkola, Niskos, Helingby, and Hevosoja.
“Hmph.”
“Mopey. I am not mopey. I was concerned even if she was with Spiral,” Lock stated with a shake of his head. Where did his mate get such silly ideas, he wondered. The Dark went over to his own Light and then wrapped his arms around her in a hug that was inescapable.
Key melted into her Dark immediately and started to blather apologies. Lock could only laugh at her silliness.
"You were too mopey. You pouted!" She declared and nodded. Definitely pouting.
Key instantly went back to Spiral and clung to his side while smiling at Grape. “Have you made babies yet? Do you know? If not, Spiral and I are going to leave so you can get back to work. You should have lots of kits.”
Lock groaned a bit and started to drink his water, pretending that conversation was not about to take place.
Spiral snorted at this and held Key, snickering.
“Oh that’s gross, Lock. I did not want to know the details, just if she was or not, gosh,” Key said while rolling her eyes. She then started to stare at Spiral in an odd way and was thinking about something.
“You asked and I answered,” Lock said, shrugging his shoulder and throwing an arm over Grape.
Grape blushed at the, and hit Lock's shoulder. "I haven't been the only one, so there. And I guess we'll find out soon enough, huh?" She teased and gave him a grin.
“That’s all your fault too, Grape,” Lock said, chuckling at the hit at his shoulder. He rubbed it an pretended to be hurt by the Light.
“And if you’re not pregnant, we will just have to fix that. I planned for a large family,” Lock stated before Key stood there and covered her ears.
‘No more bad thoughts. No more bad thoughts!’
Grape huffed at that and stuck her tongue out at him. "Well, just so you know, so did I. I want at least ten kits. At least!"
Lock just arched his brow and watched the two. They were getting along but were they getting along too well. The Dark’s eyes narrowed at the two of them before Grape distracted him.
At least ten?
“Let’s not aim that high just yet,” Lock said while slightly frowning.
Spiral raised an eyebrow at the look on Lock's face, and locked his arms around Key, daring him to even try and pull her out of his arms. They were to be mated eventually, and he intended to be affectionate with her, even now.
Key saw the look on her twin’s face too and how Spiral had reacted. It gave her an idea; a bad idea. She smiled pleasantly and then looked up at Spiral. Before the male could react, her hands shot out for his face and she planted a kiss on his lips.
Spiral returned the kiss but kept it very brief, pulling away with a warning look in his eyes. "Key." He warned, unimpressed. "As much as I enjoy the kissing, if you do it a third time, I will take it as you accepting my courtship fully."
Key hadn’t heard a single word that Spiral said but stared at her twin who was walking toward them now. He was really upset and that’s what she wanted. It was revenge for taking her away from Steel. The Erutin turned back to face Spiral with that same sweet smile and kissed him again, not realizing what it meant.
Lock assumed she knew what she was doing and paused halfway across to them. Did Key really just accept Spiral’s courtship, so soon?
Then he pulled back and looked at her, a fire in his eyes. "Key, bend over my lap now." His voice brokered no dissent. Recognizing the tone, Grape shifted to a smaller version of her own form and shot up to a resting shelf high up, placing her paws over her ears and closing her eyes. She didn't even want to think of it.
“But I want to mate with Spiral. You’re the one who matched us, remember? Why can’t we act like you and Grape,” Key said rebelliously.
“And what happened to you being sorry that I broke your courtship with Steel?”
“I changed my mind.”
“I see. Grape, we’re leaving. Let them do what they want,” Lock said while grabbing his mate down from the self and holding her gently against him.
"I am not a tool to get back at your Dark, Key Erutin. If you try to use me that way again, then we won't be courting anymore, I assure you, and my visits with Grape will not include you in them at all."
Grape huddles up in Lock's arms, well aware that the spanking was coming. She hated spankings, hate, hate, hated them!
“I hate all of you!”
Lock began to go after his Light, placing Grape on the table as he passed it. But, before he could get to Key she had already changed form and ran out the door.
“Key! Wait,” he called from the door, growling and then punched the door frame. A sick crack sounded at the contact but the pain did not even register in his hand.
“You were supposed to fix this, Spiral,” Lock said with his expression growing darker than normal.
“Now she’s run off and I can’t catch her when she runs. Damn light is too fast,” Lock said while holding his hand.
"Fix it? You think I can fix everything in a short amount of time? She was going to mate the First Dark!" He protested furious. "Instead, you insisted she mate with a traveler, and not a high ranking one either." He glares darkly. "You may fix your own twin. I'll consider courting her once she's over Steel. Consider."
"Lock?"
"Spiral?"
Nothing. She let a tear slip and closed the door, locking it up and curled up on the couch sniffling.
For years now, the bridge of the Phoenix had always been a melancholy setting. The Martial Reagent Blade Ulenna rarely left his throne; the captains chair sitting on a rise that overlooked the officers station pits. His eyes were almost always fixated out the wide viewport that extended in a semi-sphere on the upper-front half of the room. Watching. It was like watching grass grow; but even that can be interesting when the grass has a purpose. Every day more ships joined the Tangle, and one day all of these ships would lead the return home in a blaze of glory.
The room had become more homely over the years. Bridge officers basically served as his closest confidants in his rule; and their stations became more personalized as tradition, rank and care for circumstance faded. Some even had pillows and a few personal effects laying around their station seats. The only important officer that wasn't present was Snow Grey, who was attending to her children down in the repurposed noble quarters deck.
The same monotonous sound of holographic controls beeping away kept steady. Slow, but steady. All there really was to do was to examine reports, after all; and Blade generally delegated that to his officers unless an important landmark was achieved, like the completion of one more fleet to add to his already enormous navy.
Damn.
That meant her title.
"Director Hope, reporting sir." she called out softly. "If you'd have me and mine, of course." If. He might say no, after all. She hadn't exactly been where she should have, these past few years, after all, busy gathering, hoarding information and encouraging and supporting rebellion where she could.
She had made plans involving Key, or Thistle's children, one. It hardly mattered which.
Blade was the last to react. His chair slowly and ominously turned around, none of his actions being in any hurry. For the first time, Hope would witness his mutations personally. His hair had darkened from its usual silver to match some messy brown strands, and the left side of his face was heavily scarred. The most obvious mutation was his left arm; it was that of an enormous brown furred bear, the paw of witch rested on the hilt of his mighty obsidian blade that was sheathed, the tip of the scabbard leaning against the footrest of his daunting seat.
His expression didn't shift, he simply stared at her for a moment before his mouth opened. "A rare sight to see you in uniform, director." He looked down to his commander. "This was your doing?"
"Yup." Steph replied simply.
The Reagent Lord looked back to Hope again. "I trust by now you've seen the fleet in its glory. It will not be long now before we have reclaimed what is ours; what still remains, at least."
She looked him over, taking in the changes. He...he was alive, it was true. She stepped forward. "We had heard rumors from the children that you were alive, but dying. But you appear not to be." she said, looking him over curiously. Well to be sure. She smiled at him. "And I've been wearing the uniform more than I like lately. I've been working in the Hegemony, until recently, to undermine their take over as much as possible. Their grip is a weak one." She admitted. "And their grasp on the technology they've been able to reverse engineer isn't the best either." Thanks to quite a lot of misdirection, diagrams gone missing, viruses in the system.
"Even with Steph's words, it was hard to believe you made it."
And using the very tech they fought against.
