The Multiverse

Drulovic's House

74.5 INK

a part of The Multiverse, by Remæus.

A brownstone on the corner of Luna and Liber, the home is decidedly modest compared to its neighbors. It boasts well-tended azalea bushes beside the three stairs leading to the wooden door with a bronze, old-fashioned knocker. There is no doorbell. Inside, there is a welcome mat and a series of black and white photographs on the walls, interrupted only by one color picture. In the main entryway, there are stairs leading upstairs, a dining room to the left, and a living room to the right. Each are full of antique furniture and decorations. In the living room, there is an enormous icon of Christ crucified, a piano, and an old couch.

Slowly stepping into the house, the young Emperor offered Drulovic a smile. "Please, director, Shimizu will do just fine." He said offering a soft smile, before slowly removing his coat. "I haven't gotten used to all the social formalities that come with my station, and running an Empire as large as the Taiyou is tedious at best." He said, as he slowly began to remove his shoes, as was Taiyou custom, an Adjutant bringing him a pair of sandals to wear inside the home.

"Such a lovely place you have here." Shimizu said, folding the coat over his arm, and handing it to one of his staff. "They seem to have spared no detail after the last time this place was bombed, which in the coming years shouldn't be a problem as peace begins to prosper." The young man added.

"I had hoped to meet for lunch somewhere nice, though I'm suprised you insisted here, my staff had a field day with planning my security."

Nodding to his adjutant, the man took the jacket back to the limousine.

"How have you been?"

Drulović returned the smile with a small one of her own, gesturing for Shimizu to join her in the dining room. "Yes, I've found it comforting in some ways, though some things can never be returned to the way they'd been before the bombing," she said in reply. "Fortunately, it's only happened the once, really, though even that was plenty. It was quite odd, really, to be technically homeless and still responsible for the Bureau's operations."

From the kitchen, the fragrances of the pljeskavica, tarator soup, sarma, and knedla wafted into the dining room and the hall, along with the distinct aroma of Arabic-style mint tea. "Besides, I've always much preferred polite conversation over a home-cooked meal to any fancy, gourmet dishes designed by some executive chef of a white-tablecloth restaurant. Those places are too full of a particular type of wealthy and elite individual, often with political connections." Drulović offered a small shrug, gripping her cane tightly as she moved into the dining room. "And I've always despised politics."

Shimizu chuckled. "No one has my political connections, I get glares of envy almost everywhere I go." Taking in the smells of the cooking meals, he was looking forward to it, but he also knew that someone had to test everything, it was a rule he himself had instituted after poisoning his father. He didn't want someone to poison him as well.

"I'll be honest, director. I'm not entirely here as a measure of goodwill." He admitted, gesturing for his adjutant to go into the kitchen to test the food.

"I want to talk about Marlene Angel." He said, heaving a sigh. "The Aschen Empire have been pressuring my government and the AXIS to hold a tribunal, and the case has gone to committee, as well as having been forwarded to the Galaxy Police." Shimizu explained.

"That doesn't hold much weight for a world not part of the AXIS, but it does have some wider implications." The Emperor explained.

"As always, I'm sure," Drulović said, pausing a moment to stand by her seat at one end of the table. "They wish to have their miscreant agent returned to them, and if not, they wish to obtain the favor of your system if they were to initate another orbital bombardment or other such unpleasantness in response." She watched Shimizu's adjutant enter the kitchen, her own expression revealing nothing other than an intent inquisitiveness, carefully assessing even the smallest motion that Shimizu or the adjutant made, as was her habit.

Half-turning her head, Drulović added, "If you don't mind, I'll bring in the bowls myself. I've prepared everything here specially, and I hope you enjoy it." She turned to follow after the adjutant, and begin bringing in each of the serving bowls. She had to do it one at a time, but, with steam still rising from each dish, they were certainly fresh if nothing else. "These recipes passed down in my family for several generations. Perhaps not as exquisite or rarefied as those prepared by the imperial chef, but I should hope hearty and thoroughly enjoyable."

"He's checking them for poisons." Shimizu explained. "Everything I eat has to be checked for poisons, contaminants, or anything that could possibly make me sick."

Heaving a sigh he nodded slightly. "They want to imprison her for their own uses, and have promised my science director the fruits of their research, as well as being able to participate in the research, consequently, I've been pressured by my science director, who asked me to come here as a personal favor."

Watching his adjutant, he waited before the signal was given, the food had been cleared for consumption.

"What will happen, is that the Galaxy Police will send a detective to send your government, and your office an official summons. You can ignore the summons, or follow it, it doesn't really make much of a difference for your government." Shimizu said, looking over the meals being prepared, and then he slowly moved to sit down at the table.

"An International tribunal would be convened, they'd hear the Aschen and the TNG, and make a determination on the legitimacy of the imprisonment, depending on the ruling they could compel her return, which in your case doesn't mean much, but it allows the Aschen to conduct either military operations, or enforce sanctions, that doesn't mean much now, but the AXIS is planning on expanding into this galaxy."

Drulović chuckled, a bit, at Shimizu's explanation of his adjutant's work. "I should certainly hope you wouldn't be found dead, poisoned by my cooking, in my own home," she said. "As I'm sure you can imagine, that would lead to rather unfortunate consequences rather quickly afterward." Taking her time, the older woman brought each dish into the dining room, setting them in the center of the table alongside the pastries. She'd already set the dishware and silverware, and gestured for Shimizu to begin eating at his leisure.

"I understand the AXIS tribunal system well enough," Drulović said in response, "and as you know, I have little to do with the TNG's foreign affairs and diplomatic efforts, and less, with the decision of our government to consider participation or non-participation in interstellar activities. It's simply not my portfolio." She scooped some of the pljeskavica onto her own plate, her hand trembling a bit as she did so, before moving on to the tarator. "I'm afraid I can't speak to Parliament's whims regarding a summons that has yet to arrive."

"No, but you could quietly and discreetly facilitate her release, very much like you did my mother's, and we can avoid all these political wranglings that we will both no doubt be scooped up in." Shimizu said, taking a bite of his food, and nodding slightly.

"You should get a job as a cook, so I can execute my current one." Shimizu said jokingly. "I'm all for raw fish, fished from the pristine untouched waters of the outer rim, prepared with the finest techniques and spices; but the Aschen in me can enjoy a hearty meal." Shimizu said with a smile.

"Do Consider my proposal, Director, we'll all reap the benefits."

"Please, call me Arianne," Drulović said, speaking with a bemused expression. She paused, murmuring a prayer for the food with her head slightly bowed, and then began to spoon some of the soup into her mouth. "I'm glad you like what I've prepared. Sometimes, I'll bring lunch for the staff at the Bureau's headquarters. They always seem to appreciate that."

She pressed her lips together, furrowing her brows, at mention of Kendra Shaw. She remembered their encounter -- the pattern-addicted woman desperate to avoid an ignominious end, the older woman extending some bit of compassion that even the TIB's staff had rumored was uncharacteristic of her. They did not know her too well, Drulović thought.

"I'm sure Mr. Miyagi would leap instantly at the chance to deconstruct Ms. Angel's biology, and I'm rather unconvinced that we should let him," Drulović replied, dabbing gently at a corner of her mouth with her napkin before continuing. "Besides, we have our own reasons for her continued detention."

"Perhaps that is so, Mr. Takayama," Drulović said, inclining her head slightly. "Ms. Angel was certainly a persistent, if not unnecessarily cruel, interrogator in her own right." She ate her soup slowly, saving each spoonful, her expression impassive, but with almost a gentle overlay to it. "I'm sure her machinations are plenty; I'd expect no less of her. In that way, we're not so different, I suppose."

Shimizu nodded only slightly, before he shook his head and looked down to his plate. He then brought his attention back to the TIB Director before him.

"I owe you a debt, Arianne." Shimizu said calmly. "Were it not for you none of this would be possible." He said, before he slowly rose from his chair.

"If you'll excuse me for a moment." The Taiyou Emperor said, moving towards the front door, and opening it, making a subtle hand gesture for one of his many Adjutants to approach.

The man quickly approached the young Emperor, and then he followed Shimizu into the house.

Offering a short inclination of his head, the man placed a hefty stack of files, some of them several inches thick onto the table. Each file was meticulously put together, and they all bore the emblem of the IIA, and bright, red letters that read. "DECLASSIFIED"

All of them pertained to Marlene Angel. Within was her service record, psychological profile, extensive background information, though much of everything that was of importance had been redacted.

"She sees the future." Shimizu said. "She sees all possible realities, all possible futures, at once, she perceives them in real time, and that often manifests in a strange insanity." He said calmly. "I can get more, but I need some cooperation on this matter."

Drulović finished the last of the soup, moving to the richly seasoned meat on her plate. She maneuvered a fork and knife in the same hand, somewhat precariously, but in a manner that suggested she had had a fair amount of practice eating just so. Never one to rush, she watched intently as the adjutant brought in the files, setting them on the dining room table. Once he'd stepped aside, she thanked him in a warm tone.

"She's a unique individual, even for an Alteran, then, if even half of that is true," the older woman remarked. After finishing a few bites of the pljeskavica, she thumbed through the files, reading quickly as she had long since learned to do when in the field and under mounting time pressure to acquire all necessary information before the unthinkable might occur. "It's a shame the more useful portions of these files have been redacted," Drulović said, returning her attention and her efforts to the food on her plate. "Still, I doubt the IIA would be particularly happy to hear that you've shared any of this material here, in my own home, no less." She laughed a bit at that.

"Officially, this exchange never happened, and it would be a grave insult to the Taiyou Empire if I was ever implicated in what amounts to providing an enemy of the Aschen sensitive documents." He said, taking a bite of the meat, nodding in approval.

"Such allegations would be met with harsh criticism, and dismissed as Terran lies." The Emperor explained. "I've run the Taiyou Empire very meticulously to silence such lies, and I'm sure someone in your position can appreciate the anonymity." Shimizu said smiling.

"And I'm sure somehow, someway your medical staff might misplace some blood samples... perhaps they mistakenly wound up on a supply transport to the Shintenchi Shogunate? Perhaps out of some fluke... some tangible biological samples could... find their way to my science director?"

"Well, and I've accumulated many enemies in my lifetime," Drulović said, with a small shrug. "It's an unfortunate inevitability in this line of work, you know." She ate politely, taking small bites and chewing slowly with each taste of the pljeskavica. To the trained eye, her movements might have given a small indication of the difficulties she had even with chewing her food, but most had paid attention only to what they could see of the scars snaking around her jawline and the part of her wrists visible at the edge of her sleeve. She'd taken quick advantage of more than one assailant too easily distracted by the scars and the cane she carried.

Leaning back a bit, she kept her gaze on Shimizu, blinking slowly. "Anything is possible, of course, Mr. Takayama. Though I'm sure you can understand, I only do what seems best for Terra's interests, and it seems you've already mentioned the Aschen's desire for a Galactic Police investigation and intrusion into our sovereignty."

"I'm trying to placate the Aschen and avoid such pleasantries, and I can't say a Galaxy Police investigation is an intrusion into your sovereignty, it's an AXIS point of pride to preserve the individual sovereignty of it's member nations." Shimizu said, finishing the last of the food on his plate.

"They're investigating on behalf of a member government, you are holding her without trial, without due process, without any way to prove her crimes, and you're not technically at war with the Aschen Empire, so you can't really claim she's a POW." Shimizu said.

Heaving a sigh, he placed the silverware on the plate, and an Adjutant approached, but he waved him down.

"Not even prisoners of the Taiyou Empire are detained without at least some charge."

The Adjutant approached, and then quietly whispered something in Shimizu's ear, in Taiyou. Shimizu quietly nodded and slowly stood, before producing a formal invitation.

"I'd very much like to meet the new Prime Minister, so this is a formal invitation to visit with me aboard the Soja... very pleasant place... For an Official state visit to become acquainted with the new government."

"I wish I could say the same of the ways in which the Aschen Empire treats its prisoners," Drulović said, her expression momentarily wry, before fading again into the mask of impassivity she carried like a wepon. She very much doubted that the Taiyou Empire had never detained any individual without criminal charges, but she didn't bother commenting as much, instead, continuing to eat the pljeskavica on her plate. "In any case, if Ms. Gebremariam wishes to take the issue under consideration, she's welcome to do so," Drulović said, referring to Azieb Gebremariam, the TNG's Minister of Justice under the new government. "Thankfully, the law is beyond my portfolio and responsibilities."

The older woman hadn't yet finished the food on her own plate, but she paused, politely, when the Taiyou Emperor stood, regarding him silently before she took the proffered invitation, written, of course, in the finest materials. "I appreciate the kind invitation, Mr. Takayama, and I'll be sure to share it with Ms. Khayyam. I'm sure the government will gladly accept, though I wouldn't dare presume speak on her behalf. I am only the intelligence director, after all, hardly an individual of much importance."

"Very good." Shimizu said, still keeping his usual calm demeanor. "I am both honored and humbled by your hospitality, and look forward to seeing you and your government aboard the Soja for a more formal meeting, it will be my turn to provide the finest food we have to offer."

Offering a deep bow, the Emperor turned to his adjutant.

"I hate to cut this short, but i have a meeting with the Erutin ambassador aboard my vessel, I've been very busy indeed." He said, as one of his staff returned his jacket.

"Shall I arrange for someone to help with the dishes?"

Drulović waved dismissively, offering a small smile. "It's fine, Mr. Takayama," she said, her own plate not yet empty. She rose as he did, returning the formal bow. "I'm sure I'm capable of handling a few dishes -- I've lived here much to long not to learn." She rested a hand on the back of the chair, using it for leverage as she kept her gaze on the Taiyou Emperor. "Thank you for joining me for lunch -- it's a pity you can't stay longer. As I said, I'll be sure to provide Ms. Khayyam with your invitation."
