Setting
Many dangerous yet fascinating creatures roam this place...a problem for the ancestors that was soon overcome. Every now and again you may be lucky enough to see a brave explorer or hunter returning to the ancient surface walking across the cracked solid ground, searching for meat to bring back or scouting out areas for new camps to be built. Although the people live high above the surface there isn't an inch of this planet that isn't filled with life, this truly is a monument of mother nature's infinite creative powers.
It was better than hitting one of the many mountains scattered around the landscape, which did make landing a bit more troublesome, as hitting a solid rock face when you're entering from the atmosphere.
The smaller ship activates it's entry rockets, and slows down gradually until it comes to a slow hover a couple hundred feet off the ground, still slowly descending.
The Sandjumper touches down, and then the landing gear activates, letting out roughly a dozen soldiers, and half a dozen men and women in lighter armor, designated as the researchers for the group.
They quickly set up a perimeter around the dropship, and then a supply drop jets down from the Reverent, and the soldiers quickly set upon it, taking out the supplies for a small camp protected by a chest-high fence.
It takes them about an hour for 7 of the crew to assemble the camp, the rest standing guard around the perimeter.
The guards are all carrying bolt-action rifles, with one individual carrying a simple revolver. They wear a simple armor made of kevlar and metal strips, as well as helmets made of painted metal.
They set up a transmitter in the center of the camp, about the size of a person, which actively transmits to the Reverent their status and is used in emergency.
Everyone is kind of jumpy, as this is the first recorded mission of this type. Everything they're doing is utterly new, so they need to get it right if they want to make it out.
The Expeditionary forces are ready, however, to enact their mission. And this is just the start.
As Terry meandered along he hummed a tune from a faraway planet; his home. He had come here not the longest ago, on break from university. One thing led to another, and he was still here! Freelance from the laptop, living remote wasn't rough this side of the 'verse. Now where did he put that camp?
A few lights in the close distance. Far too many lights to be his camp. Terry pondered for half a moment, shrugged, and marched onward. They may have seen where he put his camp, after all!
"Greetings!" Terry popped out from behind a tree and waved at the crew of the Sandjumper. He wore a grin, a rumpled collared shirt, and spiffy shoes with a light wear-crease.
