The Multiverse

Eminence

74.5 INK

a part of The Multiverse, by Remæus.

As you maneuvered closer to the summit, it's shadow swallowed you whole. Towering above you, the peaks pierced midnight into the clear blue sky. Even the ground eluded towards darkness, grasses growing shorter with every one of your steps. The stone mass appeared to have come into existence completely at random, as if a thousand hulking and oddly shaped boulders fell from the heavens. Deep crevices contrasted the wild protrusions of rock, it was truly a wild and mysterious structure.

Hazel furrowed her brow as Moonlight explained their situation. Her Catholic upbringing rejected the idea, assuring her that she must be dreaming. But the agnostic side of her whispered, Why would it not be true? We have no way of knowing that. And does it even matter if we can return home? She shook her head slightly and said,

So... if we go through there, we can get back home? That seems so... simple.

Dion offered up a slight chuckle at Moonlight. “Our religion? We don’t believe in that ascension nonsense, I know what you’re talking about, but that’s some of the more fringe beliefs, and conspiracies.” The former Imperial commander explained.

“I believe that when we die, Charon ferries our souls to the afterlife, The righteous go to Elysium, and the damned go to Tartarus, or I suppose you call it Hel, or whatever one chooses to call it. But if we’re not truly dead, then perhaps somehow, we all survived whatever was to take our lives.”

He looked towards the rock, and grimaced. What did the gods have in store for him.

He turned back to Moonlight, and cantered his head.

“You sure seem to know a lot about us, for an Alien that I’ve never seen before.” Dion added.

Peter kind of shook his head. He didn't know if he died, and he didn't think it much mattered.
He taps his fingernails against his plated armor and remarks, "If we are to leave, why not get to it?" He was slightly impatient, but it didn't much bother him.

With a calm shrug, Moonlight explained to Hazel, "Yup! That blue light can simply take us out of here. However, I've tried to escape that way before, and it failed spectacularly! It also won't take any of us home immediately." Clearing his throat, he extrapolated, "I can't reach the light." It was a lame finish, and he knew it, "I was hoping you could since you are smaller than us, the Aether would let you through; and the rest of us could follow, since we're in your war-band."

He gave Hazel a moment to think, turning to Dion with a stoic look of determined analysis. "So... You are... an accountant?" Moonlight's face went through several phases of grief in a record two seconds. "The records led me to believe you were the least common denominator..." Resisting the urge to poke and prod at the Aschen relic, Moonlight asked something he probably shouldn't have, "You speak Ancient..." He cleared his throat, looking around to make sure the four of them were alone; the rest of the thought was slow and cryptic.

"That tongue was granted to you for a reason, don't squander it because your birthright sent you down the wrong path."

He leveled an eye towards Peter, levity returning to his voice, "If you can squeeze through this barrier and open the Gate, be my guest; you're almost twice my width in your armor though."

Peter shrugs. "I don't think I could fit, even without my armor." He faces Haze. "Haze, do you think you could try?"

Strycker looks up at the towering rock face, it almost reminding him of the monoliths that he had seen long, long ago. He leans up against the outcropping of the rock face, and stares out into the shadow it casts. Maybe he should rest here for a while. He should see if anybody else is here, shouldn't he? Or should he head into that odd crack in the rock face?

He decides to wait a little, and see who else is here. Maybe somebody will know where they are, and could answer the few questions he had.

There seemed to be people around him, he could sense them in some way. But whether or not they acted would be what mattered, yes?

He takes a short breath and exhales slowly. Maybe he would just sit here for eternity, waiting, and maybe it wouldn't feel like more than a second or two. That was the indescribable oddness of this place.

Strycker yawns as he sits down with his back to the rock surface. He had spent a while awake, but how long, he wasn't sure, although it was at least three hours, enough to make him tired. He takes his stave-like weapon, named Bitter, into his hand and lays it down next to him.

Maybe he would sleep, as he felt inexplicably tired, but he didn't want to miss anything. He closes his eyes, still conscious, but resting for a minute. It didn't make him feel any less tired, but it did feel good. Maybe he should move somewhere? He doesn't think he should, as there could be someone else here that could need company, although he doesn't know how long it will be. He reaches up with a hand and rubs his eyes, shielding it from the little light that was. It was cold, he realizes, in this shadow on the cool stone. He draws in his cloak tighter around him, and sits there, a noticeable tan smudge against the dark grey rock face.

He wasn't dressed for warmth, but he could live with the only slight cold. If he made himself small enough, closing in his size, he could probably be warmer. So he repositions himself into a sort of fetal pose, with Bitter in his hand, the axe-like bar leaned up against the rock face. He shudders slightly, not enough to be noticed from a distance.

As he's falling into that unearthly realm called sleep, a flash of memories flies across the inner part of his eyes.
Sand and blood, a lot of it.
A white cloth tunic with a black vertical line sewn down the center.
A very bright flash of light, blooming into the horizon.
Many faces.

And then he drifts off into a quiet sleep.
