The imp snickered as his tail swayed across the ground.

"Let me explain it to you this way, human..." Glom began. "Your being is constructed from three parts. First there is your body - your physical flesh. Then there is your mind and consciousness - your soul. Finally, there is your spirit. This is the part that connects you to the realm that you cannot see. When your flesh perishes, your mind and spirit live on. They are immortal. To be damned is to have your spirit claimed by a Lord of one of the Six Circles of Hell. It is not death, as your spirit is eternal."

"How dare you come here and call our best and brightest to Arceus knows where with empty promises of power and glory, you fiend. Be gone with you," Titania growled at Glom, and went over to give him a knuckle sandwich. His only saving grace from this display of girl power was the clash of dragons over on Mt. Silver to the west. Upon seeing Rayquaza go down in flames, there was only one logical response for the veteran steel-type trainer.

She fainted. She simply collapsed onto the floor, overwhelmed by the moment. Or at least she would have, if not for a tall blonde woman dressed in black catching her before Titania could smack her head on the tile. Perhaps Iris would have a more cogent response to this crisis due to her youth allowing her to not jump to any wild conclusions. The blonde looked up.

"Champion Iris, please allow me to put out the fire. You, challenger, call the paramedics. Titania here gets priority, she can come join me when she comes around. I believe you have a public address to make," she added, gesturing towards the storm of TV reporters demanding a statement from the young president of the United Pokemon League regarding the incident.

And somewhere in the vast and unforgiving wilderness, part of which was still aflame despite the intervention of a cosmic entity, there was a little girl, alone and quite possibly afraid.

Kamon had hid behind a rock with his terrified charmander as the two titans fought in the sky. When he emerged from cover, the forest burned like a furnace. The young man pulled his collar over his mouth and coughed out a lung-full of smoke.

"Charmander!" he yelled through his collar. "Find us a way out of here, boy!"

"Char char!" the pokemon replied before darting off in a direction.

The trainer followed the pokemon in a brisk pace. He ducked beneath a flaming branch and blinked through the smoke. Kamon could see Charmander run beneath a low branch. It was too high to step over, so he attempted to crawl beneath it. With some difficulty he managed to come through unscathed.

Mmmaaa... chop.

"Charmander, did you hear that?" Kamon tried to peer through the smoke for the source of the faint whimper.

"Char? Char char!" exclaimed Charmander before leaping over a burning log. He blasted the log with ember. The two flames collided and snuffed each other out. Kamon haphazardly jumped over the log.

After navigating through the fire, Kamon discovered a machop pinned beneath a fallen tree. The pokemon gritted its teeth as it futily pushed up on the flaming tree. It fell limp and groaned.

"Charmander, use ember on that fire!" Kamon ordered as he rushed up to the pokemon. "Hey. Hey you. Come on. Wake up! Let's get you out of here..."

The machop slowly opened its eyes and nodded at Kamon. They both braced their hands against the fallen tree. Kamon pressed his legs into the dirt for extra leverage. Though the weight of the tree proved to great for the machop, the strength of both pokemon and trainer were able to roll the titan away. Machop attempted to rise, but stumbled to its knees.

"Here, I'll carry you..." Kamon said as he pulled machop onto his back in a fireman's carry. Machop groaned in pain, but smiled in appreciation.

Nathan sat on a rock in his human form, and looked at the forest around him as it burned. "This will not be the end of this forest." he muttered. He then stood and extended his hands to the sky, closing his eyes and taking deep, slow breaths. Clouds would start to appear, dark clouds, filled with rain. After the low roar of thunder, the rain began pouring down hard enough to contain the fire, and yet light enough so that the Charmander would be fine.

Nathan then put his hands in his pockets and walked down the side of the mountain and into the forest, unknowingly heading towards Kamon while doing so. As he walked, he seemed unaffected by the rain, as it went around him and left him dry. Any pokemon that grew slower, took damage, or grew faster from the rain would notice that these abilities did not affect them. And it was all because Rayquaza was here.

Nathan looked around after stopping and noticed that he was maybe twenty feet away from Kamon. The Charmander would notice his presence and turn to look at him, alerting his trainer to the new person.

Everything about Nathan screamed Rayquaza. His green hair, yellow eyes, and the pattern on his clothing just gave it away. The legendary pokemon in human form stared at the human trainer before him with his yellow eyes. After a few seconds, he would approach the human as he pulled the Machop out from under the log.

"You do know that you could get sick from being in the rain?" he asked. Though he was one to talk, he started the rain, but still didn't seem like the rain even touched him in the slightest.

He looked around. "Valorie ain't gonna like this..." he muttered to himself quietly. Valorie, the girl who caught him, loved pokemon and didn't like to see them get hurt. Her attitude had rubbed off on the Legendary Pokemon that now stood before a human in a human form.

Meanwhile....

The fabric of Space itself warped at the entrance to the cave in which Spyro The Dragon rested. The fabric of Space then opened to form a portal in the form of a Spiral Galaxy, and out of the portal was Spiral James, God of Space.

Dressed in his usual black suit and tie with matching shoes and pants, along with a white dress-shirt. On the surface of the suit's breast pocket a beautifully embroidered Spiral Galaxy glowed dimly with a divine power.

The God of Space approached Spyro and cleared his throat to get the Dragon's attention. The noise echoed throughout the cave, making plenty of noise for the purple Dragon to hear.

Kamon glanced up as Nathan approached and tilted his head towards the sky. "Huh, wha'?..." he muttered. "Where did this rain come from?... And who are you?"

"Char char!" squeaked Charmander as he trotted up to Kamon's foot.

"Excuse me," Kamon cradled the limp machop. "Do you know where the nearest Pokemon Center is? I think this machop got hurt after having a tree fall on him. He has trouble standing..."

----

A moment slid by like molasses after Spiral Galaxy made his entrance. Finally a low growl like thunder rumbled from within the cave's dark passages. The walls shuddered. Two fiery crimson eyes materialized in the blackness above the cosmic being. They were deep and penetrating, yet intelligent.

"Who intrudes upon my lair?" the guttural voice growled, "Who disturbs my meal?"

Nathan smirked at Kamon and his pokemon. "Not to worry, I may control the weather here, but I won't hurt you." he said. "I am Rayquaza, however you may call me Nathan." he said, walking up to the pokemon trainer and gently placing a very human hand on the chest of the Machop. "Poor boy." he muttered. He looked and felt completely dry, as if the rain didn't affect him. Also, Charmander, who would normally be hurt by the rain, was fine as well.

............

Spiral looked up at the glowing orbs. "My my, a grumpy one, aren't you?" he asked with a playful tilt of his head. "I am Spiral James, God of Space. Perhaps you've heard of me. However I don't blame you if you haven't, not many people know of me." he said. As he introduced himself, he would offer a polite bow, showing that he meant no harm. Though, the great beast before him probably wouldn't see him as a threat in the slightest. After all, he was...unassuming.

His voice was smooth and seemed to roll out of his mouth without a care in the multiverse. "I'm sure you know why I am here, Spyro." he said calmly, looking the great Dragon in the eyes. The pupils of this man were replaced with Galaxies that glowed and spun slowly, giving off a sort of power that radiated from the man's body.

"Your bout with Rayquaza almost tore a whole in the delicate fabric of Space and Time, which my sister and I work so hard to maintain." he explained in a serious tone. His voice almost seemed layered in a way, as if many voices joined in. Only about two to be exact, but it added a sense of power and intimidation.

The God of Space merely stood in front of Spyro as if standing before a child, though meant no disrespect from doing so.

Winter smiled knowingly as the Houndoom was struck directly by Flow's Muddy Water, a critical hit to throw some overkill into the already effective attack. It didn't need the mud in it to potentially blind the Houndoom. It was out the moment the water struck it. Karen, despite having tasted defeat, smiled instead as she returned her Pokemon to it's ball.

"Well, aren't you good," she said to Winter, "I like that in a Trainer."

"Yeah, well it wouldn't do me much service if I was bad," Winter laughed. The Vaporeon that had just defeated the last of the Elite Four sat down by him, allowing for Winter to embrace her in a hug. She had done exceptionally well, Winter thought as she scratched behind her ear, a place she thoroughly enjoyed to be scratched behind. Flow purred as he did so.

Karen crossed her arms as she watched, "Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled Trainers should try to win with the Pokémon they love best."

Winter knew she was referring to Lucky, whom which he'd sent in to take on the Gengar. The Squirtle had been his companion since day one and he never lost sight of him since. Sure, Sumo was quite the attention hog herself, but even she respected the bond that the two of them shared. It was unbreakable at this point.

Winter gave a glance at the unconscious Pokemon beside him. He didn't have a Pokeball to put Lucky in as he had a natural hatred towards them. So he was left there while the battle concluded. Now, he sat down next to his unconscious buddy, nodding in agreement, "I think so too."

"I like your style. You understand what's important. Go on, the Champion is waiting."

Once more nodding, he reached into his pack and pulled out a Revive Potion. It was his last one. He could give it to someone of more functionality on his team, like Glist or Mane.

Instead, he gave it to Lucky, because he deserved to see this through...all the way to the end. When he and Lucky would be crowned as the Champion. He wasn't going to do this without him.

Lucky stirred as the potion began to take effect, waking him after a moment. He gave a weak croak of confusion.

"S-squir...?"

"Ah, don't worry buddy. I've got a Hyper Potion for ya as well." He took the potion out and proceeded to spray it on Lucky. A few seconds later, the Squirtle was back to full and ready to kick some butt with him. As Lucky found his way onto Winter back, the trainer thought for a moment, putting Flow back in her Pokeball. I only have four Pokemon going into this...

He was a bit nervous about that. Titania Brightsmith wasn't a Champion to mess with or take it easy on. She was the Champion, after all. And she'd have her full team with her while his would be partially incomplete. With all their abilities and all their tactics. In retrospect, he should've brought some more potions.

But hindsight was always 20/20. And while he couldn't change the past, he can definitely change the future. Winter still had two Pokemon that had yet to battle as he made his way through the Elite Four. His two best pieces on his side of the board in his opinion. And Titania would have no clue what she'd be facing, unlike Winter who'd studied the Pokemon she uses and prepped for it.

In short, both trainers had their advantages and disadvantages. Now, the final fight had to commence to see who was the best of them all and who deserved to claim the title of Champion in the Kanto and Johto regions.

"Come on, Lucky!" he shouted enthusiastically as he opened the door to the final chamber, "Let's go show Titania who the real champion is!"

"Squir squir!" Lucky responded with just as much energy as they charged into the last room.

"Uh, wait," Karen called after them, "She's not-"

But the door had slammed shut. Winter was already rushing to the final chamber, with just as much excitement as he had nerves. Down the long corridor he went, each step in front of him a reminder that this was the home stretch. It was make or break time. His whole life had been leading up to this and it was time to bet it all on the table. To show the world that he was ready to write his name in history and claim this title.

And finally, he was there. Except...Winter stopped at the unfamiliar sight that awaited him. Standing in the center of the room was a trainer he hadn't expected to see here. Winter had assumed this man had retired when Titania had beaten him in battle and taken his spot. Yet here he was, in the flesh, black cloak and all.

It was Lance, the former Champion of Kanto and Johto, the Champion before Titania.

"Uh...hey," Winter half-waved awkwardly. It was clear he hadn't been expecting this one, "Where's Titania? I thought I was going to battle her."

"There was once a time when you might have, challenger," came the voice Winter had been expecting. "However, some time ago I decided to retire. With the League unable to organize a tournament to determine my successor, I simply named Lance the interim champion until such time as someone had cleared the League Challenge. Stay your hand, dragon master."

From the Hall of Fame room in the back emerged a vision of cold beauty. Fire-red hair contrasted by a sleek, black and silver gown with metal accents on the wrists, knee-high boots, and a poofy red skirt reminiscent of a native of the faraway Unova region, a Pokemon called Bisharp. "Young Trainer, please follow me to the back before the media hounds show up. Lance, you and Karen field questions while I fill a vacancy in our great nation's hierarchy."

Titania's gloved hand beckoned to Winter. "If you wish to earn it fair and square, I suppose you could battle Lance anyway, but given the shape your Squirtle seems to be in I must advise against it. There is much to discuss, new Champion...I must explain the duties of your new role." God, how she wanted to just drop the act already. Just a little longer...a little longer...

Winter wasn't sure what to say. He'd already attained the title? He looked from Titania to Lance and back again, confusion wrought all over his face. He hadn't paid attention to that much media in the previous three years, but even he should've known that Titania would be stepping down. That would've been plastered all across Ruula, not just in the Kanto and Johto regions.

This was not the victory I was expecting...

It was kind of disappointing. He wanted to earn it so badly, to walk in and claim his place in Ruulan history, not have it handed to him like a spoiled rich kid. Besides, it wasn't about the title so much as it was the battle for him. He enjoyed the challenge and the strategy behind it...and most of all, it was fun! Talk about a great ice breaker. He met a lot of his friends through battle, win or lose. And he wanted to be friends with Titania.

When she mentioned Lucky, his gaze immediate went back to him. Sure, he may have been knocked out by Karen's Gengar, but he had so much fight in his eyes. In it's own way, it was admirable how determined he was for this. This was their quest, not Winter's alone.

Titania was concerned for his Pokemon and so was Winter, but he didn't come here to have the title handed to him. Still, the decision didn't rest with him...

"What do you think, Lucky?" he asked him, "You think you still got the fight in ya?"

"Sssssquir!" The Squirtle pounded his fist together, telling him all he needed to know.

Smiling determinedly, he turned back to Titania, "Well, there you have it. I think he wants to fight on. And so do I." He pulled out a PokeBall and held it out to them, staring Lance in the face, "Lance! I challenge you to a Pokemon Battle, for the championship of the Kanto and Johto region!

Lance sighed, looked over to Titania, then back at the kid after a solemn nod from the woman. "He reminds me of my younger self. And as the steward of the Indigo championship, it is my duty to see that the title is handed to a worthy successor. You have already proved your worth by fighting your way to me, but if you insist, I'll give you a taste of the legendary power of dragon Pokemon! Let's go, Salamence!"

A massive, blue, four-legged beast with red crescent wings hit the field, letting out an intimidating battle cry before looking down at Winter, eager to see what this little brat had left in the tank.

"Don't mind me, I haven't watched a good, honest fight in quite a while. It's a balm to my soul to see the younger generation vying for their goals," Titania added. She walked daintily to a chair in the corner and rested in it, eager for the match to start.

Winter smiled calculatingly at the Salamence presented in front of him. Now this was what he had hoped for. Six Pokemon will be harder to beat with only four at his disposal, but he was up to the challenge. He honestly wished he had Glist here, given that he would prove most effective against the Dragon-Type master. But he had other work arounds.

"Alright, Flow! Let's show him what's what!"

Out came the Vaporeon, with a flick of her blue fin-shaped tail and large gill-like ears. She landed gracefully in front of the Salamence, looking up at it with all levels on intensity. She finished off the last of the Elite Four and now she was going to make the first move against Lance.

"Okay, Flow, Acid Armor first! This guy's gonna hit pretty hard!" Flow started to go through the process of liquefying herself slightly, making her much more resistant to Physical attacks. But would it be enough?

"Haha!" Lance laughed, and even Titania couldn't hold back a giggle. Starting with a boosting move...well, if it was 6v6 it would make sense to cut loose right away. But without knowing it was 4v6, it just looked like foolishness. "Salamence. Use Shadow Claw!" One of its forelimbs became sheathed in dark energy before it lunged forward for a vicious strike, and the move had a good chance of hitting a weak point to not only do more damage, but also ignore the defense boost. This was why the dragon master chose it over the more straightforward option. He figured an Ice Beam was about to come out any moment.

But Titania knew better. She once had that look in her eyes when she battled Rithika all those years ago. It seemed like a bad dream now...that look of desperation, of needing to press on against all odds, of having to go until there was nothing left to give. Winter had the same motivation to give all he had, but was powered by positive emotion. To see how far he could go, instead of trying to run away from something. He would make a good Champion...if he could survive.

Winter winced as he saw Flow take the hit and fly backwards. But the Acid Armor had done it's job. Despite the critical hit chance, it didn't hurt as much as it would have had she not done it. Flow shook it off, looking like she could take a few more hits of similar fashion...maybe five or six.

"That's what I'm taking about! Use Return!" Winter shouted gleefully, fist raised.

Flow was already back on the Salamence, hitting him with everything she had. It would seem a bit weird, maybe even foolish, to come at the Dragon-Type with a standard Normal-Type move. However, the move did more damage the more the user liked the trainer. Winter had even considered teaching it to Lucky, given that it's power would likely be maxed. But it's power was maxed with Flow. After all, he'd saved her and his brothers' lives. For that reason, all his Eevolutions knew Return...and could hit insanely hard with it.

It was Lance's turn to be confident in tanking the hit due to Salamence's earlier Intimidate. Leading researchers at the prestigious Smogon University had concluded that even a single Intimidate dropped a Pokemon's physical attack power to about 2/3 of its base, disregarding other factors in play. Still, that was an impressive attack. Also, no Ice Beam?

"Your insistence on us having a fair battle is admirable, but you stand no chance as you are against my mighty dragons! Salamence! Use Dragon Claw!" This time, a quick swoop up followed by a divebomb allowed the dragon to bring both of its forelimbs to bear in a brutal double slash attack. Vaporeon was one of those Pokemon that could absorb multiple hits...he had to get the knockout before something bad like a Scald burn came out.

"Cool it, Lance. Champ or not, he's still a kid," Titania admonished from the corner. Iris aside, generally children weren't able to give as well as they could get in a verbal sparring match.

He scoffed at Titania's comment, "I may be a kid, but I've heard worse."

Winter was debating on which route to take here as the Dragon Claw found it's mark. Flow was quite durable in a fight and he was counting on that to hopefully make it past the first two of his types without her being knocked out. However, he wasn't sure how much damage she could take. Salamence was a power hitter, no doubt. So why not take that out of him?

"Flow! Aurora Beam! Let's go!" he called.

The Vaporeon let loose a rainbow beam aimed straight at the Salamence. Dragons did not like ice, which was the thing Winter was counting on. Not to mention it naturally hit pretty hard and it would lower his strength when he struck next. With his attack lowered as well as Flow's, the playing field would be even again.

It did more than strike hard. It knocked out the Salamence on the spot, a heap of blue scales collapsing to the gilded floor of the final challenge room. "Yep, there it is," Titania sage-nodded. Lance gave her a dirty look as he recalled his trusty lead.

"All right! I thought this would never happen! Let's go, Gyarados!" A huge blue serpent towered above Vaporeon, giving another intimidating glare as he came out. "Gyarados! Use Thunder Wave!" The air smelled of ozone as quick jolts of electricity started jumping around, making Titania start in her seat as they closed in on Flow the Vaporeon...or whoever Winter had in mind to continue the battle.

"It's making sense now. If you were at even strength, you would have taken out the Salamence right away and rode that advantage. The fact that you bothered to set up means you're not firing on all cylinders," Titania finally deduced. "How many have you lost? Two? Three? Reminds me of one of my title runs back on Terra. But that's all the more reason to not make mistakes and keep the pedal to the metal. Don't give up, kid. Lance wants to psych you out."

Winter's jaw dropped at the same time the Salamence did, "Wow...that was...wow! Good job Flow!" A celebratory call responded, letting him know that she was just as excited about the hit. He knew the beam would do some hard hitting damage, but he hadn't expected it to wipe it out entirely.

Flow's next opponent was Gyrados, to which Winter decided to keep Flow out for. She would be able to absorb many more hits the Water/Flying type was going to plan on throwing at her. And while he had a Pokemon that knew an appropriate move, he figured he could hold those cards at bay until he truly needed them.

However, he hadn't anticipated Gyarados knowing Thunder Wave. It hit rather quickly, causing Flow to stiffen in paralysis. Winter was surprised by the status, but he was always anticipating Electric-Type moves and had plenty of gear to counter such.

He gave a reassuring smile to Titania, "Don't worry. I have a few tricks up my sleeve myself." To which he appropriately acted by rolling up his sleeve, revealing a Paralyze Heal Potion. "I'm always prepared for nasty surprises and the like. Paralysis is one I take very seriously."

He then proceeded to spray the potion on the Vaporeon's back. The electric sparks jetting out from Flow faded away, allowing for her to move again. Satisfied, he turned back to the Dragon Master.

"Sorry Lance! I got plenty more where that came from!"

"I can do that more times than you have status healing potions, I bet," Lance countered. "Thunder Wave again." Again the sparks came out, closing in on Flow and trying to force a switch. That Acid Armor was pesky, and Gyarados didn't have anything to smash through it...but Vaporeon couldn't do much back either. The difference here was momentum. As soon as Winter was forced to acknowledge the reality of the situation, Lance would boost up and try to do some damage himself.

Titania might have been rooting for the kid a bit, but this just made her hide her face in her hands. What was she going to tell Valorie? This kid was her age, and yet he did what she wanted so badly to do and couldn't. Probably just as well, because she probably couldn't handle the non-battling parts of being on top of an entire region.

The Thunder Wave found it's mark once more. Lance checked his Paralyze Heal Potion count. Seven...he tightened his lip in disappointment.

Lance was right. He couldn't keep using those. The Dragon-Type master would win in the long run. He'd have to change tactics...

An idea was forming in his head, however. An immediate solution. He'd have to keep Flow paralyzed for now and give Lance the attack edge the next time he sent her out. But if things worked out like he hoped it would, he'd take care of that Gyarados in one swing. But would the Pokemon he had in mind be crafty enough to have the item he was hoping to have?

Winter smiled. Only one way to find out... "Flow, return! You did very well!"

He called the Pokemon back into her PokeBall, pulling out another one immediately.

"Alright, Sumo! It's your time to shine!" he cried as he launched it.

A very clever choice of words, Titania and Lance would discover, as the Shiny blue Shuckle appeared in it's shiny blue shell. Her eyes narrowed at the massive Gyarados in front of her, raising a brow as if she was saying, "Don't you give me that look! I will CUUUUT you!" She could take a couple hits herself, given her absurdly high defense. But why would he send a Pokemon out that had a weakness to Water-Type?

This was the opportunity Lance had been searching for. "Good boy. Now, Gyarados! Use Dragon Dance!" The serpent flattened its body and focused its energy while focusing massive reserves of power to increase its speed and attack power.

Titania practically did a spit take, having made a guess that the dragon dance would be largely useless. As the saying went, "you don't fuckle with Shuckle." It had a whole bunch of status moves to mess with just about any strategy, and the bulk to survive the inevitable retaliation.

"Let's go, Gyarados! Hit him with a Waterfall!" The interim champ wasn't expecting a knockout, even with the power boost. However, the flinch hax was very real. And maybe he could get a two shot.

Not so fast!

Winter saw the opportunity the moment Lance said those two words. And he was going to use it.

"Sumo! Encore, quick!"

The Shuckle managed to get the move in right before Lance was able to call his next attack. When Lance's Gyarados heard the instruction, all it could do was flatten it's body once more, performing the Dragon Dance again. Winter kept his composure behind a sure grin on the outside, but inside he was dancing. Lance finally slipped up!

"Alright, Sumo. This is the opportunity we've been waiting for. Let's switch this up! Power Trick!"

Another clever choice of words as Sumo's Attack power and Defense power changed around. It was now currently the strongest hitter on his team with a massive attack power.

Gyarados went for that Dragon Dance once more. Winter was ready to strike.

"Okay, use Bug Bite!" Winter called out, dismissing the Shuckle's Earthquake move as it would have no effect on the Flying-Type.

The bite that it inflicted was strong. Very strong. Gyarados would feel that one. It wouldn't knock him out immediately; likely it would in three more hits. But the persistence of Encore would carry out through the majority of that if not all of it.

Sure enough, Lance's Gyarados made the familiar motion and Winter took the opportunity to use Bug Bite once more. The second bite seemed to hit much harder than the first bite had, indicating a critical hit. He clenched his fist and grinned widely at the luck. One more Bug Bite would do it.

But now things were gonna get risky. Encore would only work for so long. How many more hits could he dish out before Gyarados would be able to use another move again. Winter just had to hope that it would last at least one more turn.

And it did! Breathing half in relief, half in determination, he pointed forward, "Sumo! Finish it off! Bug Bite, one more time!"

The Gyarados collapsed from the attack, falling from it's levitated state and hitting the ground below. At the same time Lance would return his Pokemon, Winter returned his Shiny Shuckle. "You did brilliant, Sumo! I'll need you later!" he whispered as he put her back in the PokeBall.

But what a great start, Winter realized as he waited for Lance's next Pokemon. Flow took a couple of hits, but for the most part the two were even, four Pokemon apiece. He had started off with the disadvantage and now he'd all but dug himself out of that hole. Now, he needed to keep it up! Lance was still an opponent to be reckoned with, even with only four Pokemon left. He had earned the title of Champion at one point for a reason. He grinned curiously as he waited for the next move.

"Are you fu-" "LANCE! He's a kid! Language!" It was evident who wore the pants in that relationship, but soon it would be academic. Lance sighed in disbelief as he recalled Gyarados, hiding his shame behind his billowing cloak with his other hand. "How is this possible...for a Shuckle to hit this powerfully...you must have sacrificed its defense for offense somehow. But you did nothing about its speed, I bet. Altaria, let's go!"

A large blue bird with cloud-like wings hit the field, letting out a loud hum in a pathetic attempt at intimidation. "Its power is no joke, though! Altaria! Use Dragon Breath!" A rainbow-colored jet of fumes poured forth, washing over Shuckle's side of the battleground in case Winter tried anything fancy. If Shuckle did in fact trade away defense for offense to pull that trick, there was no way Winter wasn't aware of being a sitting duck. Either he stayed in and took the likely KO, or put his replacement in danger with the gases having a chance to paralyze as well as cause damage.

Winter chuckled under his breath as the Dragon Master's frustration invoked Titania's lecturing tone. A tone that wasn't really necessary. Winter had been called a good variety of slurs and slanders over his three year journey. Having heard the f-bomb being dropped on more than several occasions, it was a term that had no meaning to him and wouldn't affect him personally so much as it would show him the frustration and anger building up in the opponent.

Now if he had been called a dunderhead...things would have gotten real.

Now Winter was running out of options as Lance sent out Altaria. Flow was paralyzed, meaning that she'd have to take at least two hits before she could retaliate. Not a good option considering she'd already taken a couple of hits. Sumo would be wiped out instantly by the next strike if he put her back in. He wanted to wait for Power Trick to wear off before having her go out for Round 2. And Lucky...he wanted to save him as his last Pokemon to fight. Which left him one option.

Was it really time to reveal his final Pokemon?

Guess so. Making a final decision, he let out a deep breath and pulled out a PokeBall as he spoke, "Alright, let's do it-"

"Squir!"

An cry from Lucky cut through his words, causing Winter to stop and turn to his best friend. The Squirtle was pointing to himself, then to Lance's Altaria. He wanted to go in.

"You sure, buddy?" Winter had a soft smile on his face.

He pounded his chest in response. Winter knew that meant yes.

"Alright then, I guess you know what you're doing," Winter put the PokeBall back, and pointed instead, "Let's go, Lucky! Show that Altaria who's boss!"

And Lucky hopped into the arena to duke it out with the Altaria.

He took the Dragon Breath head-on, bracing himself from the blow by putting his arms in front of him in the shape of an X. He was enveloped in the rainbow cloud which spanned across his side of the field. For a moment, everything was quiet...everything was tense. Winter's eyes quivered, hoping his buddy would come out of it okay.

In fact, he came out of it more than okay. When the clouds cleared, Lucky was still there, ready to strike back. No jolts of electricity indicated that the paralysis attempt failed and while he did take some damage, he was more than capable of dishing it out tenfold.

"Yeah!" Winter pumped his fist in the air, "Taking hits like a champ! Now! Use Blizzard!"

He didn't even need to call the move out as Lucky was already charging up the blast of icy cold wind and snow to hurtle at the Altaria. Should the strike land, it would likely come really close to taking it down in one shot. Definitely in two. Not to mention a not too terrible chance of freezing the Dragon-Type solid which would confirm another takedown of one of Lance's Pokemon. Sure, it was one of the less accurate moves a Pokemon could learn. But the Squirtle wasn't called Lucky for nothing.

Lance had two things going for him as the screaming storm descended. Well, three, actually. One, Altaria was naturally specially defensive, though that didn't matter much in the face of a super-effective hit like this one. Two, even with as strong as Lucky was, Squirtle wasn't as naturally gifted in raw power as his evolutions. And three, the move wasn't exactly the most reliable--

"FUCK!" Lance blurted out. Titania couldn't rein him in fast enough that time as the squall slammed into the dragon that looked more like a bird, and even she had to put her arms up and back away as the powerful icy blast worked its magic. Note to self, teach Ulysses that move. Would really help if and when I'm attacked en masse again. To the shock of everyone except possibly Lance himself, Altaria was still up after that! There was no way it was taking another like that, though, or even a weaker hit. Lucky being the jolly old soul that he was was probably the difference there. If he was a bit more modest, the OHKO might have been within reach.

"We can't let him get another hit like that! Altaria! Use Double Team!" The ultimate rage-inducing move, a true test of character for Winter as his opponent shook off some excess snow via rapid movements that made it look like there were two or three of them at any given moment. Lucky could probably track it, but even for him it was an inexact science, reliant on educated guesswork.

Winter couldn't help but burst out laughing at the Dragon-Type interim champion's frustration when the attack hit. It wasn't out of confidence, nor was it out of malice. It was just a moment of pure hilarity to see a high ranked official lose his cool like this in the championship round. But nobody was perfect. Winter knew that. After all, he was this close to claiming the title for himself and if he did...well that'd be more proof that even champions had characters behind their political facades.

But now came the real question. What was his next move? He couldn't use Blizzard again, not with Altaria using Double Team the way it was. He would likely miss. Hydro Pump was out of the question as well for low accuracy. And Brick Break...well that was just pointless to use in general. He could use Surf here, as it was the most accurate move on their side of the playing field, or he could let the Double Team pass while buffing up Lucky with his only stat move. He figured the second option was safer.

"Lucky! Iron Defense!"

But it appeared Lucky had a different strategy in mind as he charged up and began rising above a wave of water, showing that he was going to use Surf. It appeared that the Squirtle knew something Winter didn't. This didn't happen often, but when it did, Winter was sure to trust whatever Lucky had in mind. Typically it worked out for them in the end.

"Alright, Lucky! I trust your judgement! Use Surf!"

The massive wave of water was sent cascading towards Altaira, a wave that would be rather hard for the Dragon/Fairy/Flying type to dodge, even with the evasive maneuvers. And Lucky was rather calculating when he needed to be. Was he good enough to track through the Double Team and land the hit that would take it out?
