The Temple Grounds

A spacious courtyard is situated at the base of the temple and several small out-buildings surround the area. To the east lies the temple barracks, a formidable and defensible structure that currently houses the Knights of Le'thorian and their Captain, Arrow Flight. Much of the structure has been raised from rough hewn rock from the mountain itself, leaving it laced with rich veins of adamantine to reinforce the walls.

To the west is a large training yard surrounded by sturdy stone walls. The rich veins of adamantine within the mountain leave the natural hewn walls of the training yard well capable of withstanding a great deal of abuse.

To the north the main temple itself stands sentinel over the icy peaks, both tall and proud with its banner flying high. Wayward soul or hero to be, all with benevolent intentions will find sanctuary within these halls.

The Mountain Side Temple serves as the central base of operation for the Patronus, an ancient order of champions and heroes, and an ever present call can be felt to those of a heart to walk the path of the Patronus. With a vast array of knowledge contained within its library, the temple also serves as a strong lure for scholars and historians. Adding to the diversity of the temple residents, wayward travelers often pass through its halls.

Another bad omen.

Casren stared, his mind hot with disbelief. Some force of the universe was discouraging this path, at all costs. The man was bloodied on the stretcher, was his end near? Who were these soldiers? Casren could swear he had smelled that scent before. Aside from the familiar waftings of mortal blood, of course. It hit him like a ship smashing to Terra. What were the Aschen doing here?

He looking to Sahlie and shrugged.

Rynhart approached the new arrivals with pointed purpose as he separated from the gathered onlookers in the courtyard. As he came to stop before them he briefly looked them over before nodding his head towards the temple steps.

"Come," he offered.

He headed up the steps without so much as a glance back, seemingly assuming the group would follow him. There were still a large number of Aschen soldiers idling within the courtyard, but the soldiers seemed to be for the most part not paying the temple residents much mind and he didn't spare them a glance either as he strode past with the new arrivals at his back.

Cináed raised an eyebrow at Sahlie, "Mr. Toasty?" he questioned, folding his arms with a smirk. He followed the others' eyes, then, to the soldiers spread out across the courtyard. His smile dropped into a faint frown, "Huh, I certainly wasn't expecting this sort of thing here." he remarked a little uneasily.

He lapsed into a momentary silence until Rynhart approached, at which point he blinked in surprise. "Come..? Are you in charge here..?" he started, but by that point the man was already walking away. He stared after him for a few moments before turning to the rest of the group. "Well, I guess that answers our question. As vague and mysterious as expected, I guess!"

With a beckoning gesture for the others to follow, he hurried after Rynhart into the Temple proper.

Casren followed after with a considerably less amount of enthusiasm. As he took in the temple, the soldiers who went unacknowledged, he wondered. Something, he could not say what, was not right here. The warning from the dish still quaked the fibers of his flesh. It was a threat to his very vampyric fate.

Who was it on the edge of that depression? Time had frozen and the voice had echoed sound over the mountain-scape. What divine being dare speak such definitive statements? It was troubling, indeed. A warning from the Gods? Vague and mysterious indeed. This mountain had produced nothing good, it had crushed his hopes and dreams under an avalanche of soul defiance.

Casren nodded and marched onward after the others, ready to be lead almost anywhere, so long as his questions would be answered.

The light-hearted commentary would have to wait until later, it seemed, since the nearby troops and Rynhart put a damper on the mood. Exhaling upwards, a few strands of Sahlie's hair danced in his breath before he tossed his head to get them out of his eyes.

"How did that poem go again? "'Will you walk into my parlour,' said the spider to the fly,"" he sang softly, though not soft enough so that his companions couldn't hear him. "'Tis the prettiest parlour that ever you did spy.'"

With a last glance at the Aschen who were present, a few brisk strides brought Sahlie alongside Cináed. Maybe the questions that had plauged him for a month would finally be answered. Or maybe nothing would happen and it would turn out that coming up here was a waste of time. At the very least, he would know which it was.

Derek and crew trudged their way to the temple, their thick winterized coats heavy with snow and ice. With only Whisper's rough directions and heavy winds tearing through the icy peaks, the journey had been arduous to say the least. Trying to get a reverence down in here would be an impossible feat, and even the smaller transport vessels they had to set down in Windcrest to make the rest of the trip on foot.

Getting anyone moved out of this temple was going to be a feat unto itself - let alone in a day. He had brought only a handful of his crew, and Echo at Whisper's request, to assess the situation and to determine how many men they could feasibly get transported back.

"Well unless there's two temples built at the top of inhospitable mountains, this looks like the place," Derek remarked.

The Aschen military still largely dominated the courtyard and the barracks, and there was a tension in the air between them and the locals that was hard to miss.

"Best stay out of trouble, I'm going to go find who's in charge here."

Echo hadn't felt the trouble of the journey the same way that the rest of the Aschen crew had. Though the cold and cutting winds had been uncomfortable, he had not been tired by the climb - fatigue being something he did not suffer from. He did not speak as they filed into the temple courtyard, nor as Derek moved off to find someone to speak with.

The rest of the crew milled about uncomfortably, some going to speak with the members of the military already here, the others sticking together and muttering suspiciously about the temple full of strange and magical peoples.

Left alone with nothing to do, Echo found himself unsure what to do with his newfound freedom... if it could be called that. Perhaps more accurately it was a loosening of his leash. Until now he had not been able to so much as wander a building unsupervised.

Casting a final pensive glance at the nearby soldiers, Echo started to walk. He went where idle curiosity took him, slipping up the steps of the temple a few minutes after Derek had disappeared inside, and entering.

The calm of the Temple was broken by the deafening crack of a gunshot off in the distance in the icy peaks. A few moments later, in the sky, a short distance away from the temple upon the mountainside, a bright burst of incandescent flame shot into the air, forming the brief shape of a dragon's head before dissipating.

It was in a flash of light that Noah appeared in the centre of the courtyard. Unconscious and coated in crimson, the young mage was on the edge of death, a large chunk of his body completely obliterated by the shot of the Taiyou snipers. Shouts went out as those within the courtyard noticed him, many recognising his face.

A cloaked figure was the first to run to his side, dark haired and stern faced. Anaiya crouched beside the young man, her shock giving way to practised professionalism as she took a moment to assess the damage. "We need to get him into the barracks immediately, we need the Aschen's medical prowess if we're going to have any chance whatsoever of saving him. Get me a stretcher!"

It was begrudgingly that Anaiya acknowledged the superiority of the Aschen's medical knowledge and capabilities, but she was a doctor, and if the best she could do for her impromptu patient was to pass them onto someone else, then so be it. It took only a short time for the stretcher to be retrieved from the medical centre that the barracks had become and with the help of the Aschen who had provided it, managed to manoeuvre Noah onto it and rush back to where he could receive medical attention.

A series of deafening shrieks could be heard from the Icy peaks, followed suddenly by a series of blinding flashes, and a dull thundering roar which rapidly erupted into powerful shockwaves of hot air that washed over the temple, but did little damage at this distance and with the surrounding peaks to shelter them. Far in the distance mushroom clouds began to erupt throughout the icy peaks, menacing and destructive.

A flash of brilliant golden light illuminated the courtyard, as for the second time in an hour, a figure appeared from mid-air. This time, however, it seemed that they were in better health. The light faded to reveal a young auburn haired mage, robed in soft colours decorated with gold. Elante cast his eyes around the courtyard with concern, mixed in with relief that at least the temple was still standing.

It hadn't been clear exactly where those nukes had landed from the scattered word they'd heard of them.

The celestial mage turned to face one of the waiting figures observing him, "You there!" he called, "Where is Rhea? Rynhart? Arrow? What's the situation here?"

"Here," Rynhart replied as he joined Elante in the courtyard from the main temple. He strode down the steps with a note of urgency to his pace.

"It has been a while," he noted as he offered a hand in greeting to the Celestial mage. "I wish I could say it was under better circumstances. The short explanation is that we need to get these Aschen evacuated out of here. The long explanation will have to wait."

Rynhart's own urgency was reflected in the people around them that were moving back and forth between the barracks and the temple.

Elante took Rynhart's hand with a smile, nodding his head, "That it has been. It's good to see that you weren't hit too hard by that bombardment, it's been all over the news... or, well, it was. There's been something else to draw attention since. That's the other reason I'm here, as well as making sure you were all okay."

The mage shook his head, "Wing City is under attack. There are... undead, masses of them, with robotic implants and enhancements. They're tearing the city apart. I have no idea how there are so many of them, but they're close to overwhelming the police force and the military. It's nightmarish down there."

The edge of worry to Elante's eyes might have betrayed the fact that Aeryn was in the midst of the calamity; were it not for the fact that for one that knew Aeryn, it was an assumption easily made regardless.

Rynhart shook his head at the news.

"We can't spare much as you can see, but gather what volunteers you can to assist Wing City. I need to stay here, we have wounded we need to get medical care to."

"There's some new arrivals that we can spare as well. They haven't been battle tested yet, but I'm not sure we have the luxury for that at the moment."

"I'm sure that the city will appreciate all the help it can get," Elante replied, frowning with conflict, "I wish I could stay and help with the wounded, but ... it's bad down there. Have you got someone taking care of the radiation? With the blasts going off that close, I imagine you're all at risk of poisoning from it."

"If you're too busy, just give me names and descriptions and I can find the new guys myself."

"We can manage here," Rynhart reassured Elante.

"Tahlia," he called out to a woman who was passing through the courtyard. "This is Elante, help him round up some volunteers to assist Wing City, he can fill you in on the details. I think Cinaed and Sahlie were in the library, I'm not sure where the others have gotten to."

He clasped a hand to Elante's shoulder. "Good luck," he said before he moved off towards the barracks.

"Well you're a cute one," Tahlia noted to Elante. "Come on, I'll show you to the library. You can fill me in on the way."

Rynhart was seated outside atop a large rocky outcropping near the edges of the courtyard. The seat afforded him quite the view of the icy peaks that spanned out across the region, as well a relative amount of privacy.

It was cold out but the noon day sun helped to soothe the bite of the chill mountain air as he played a few light notes upon his flute. He hadn't been playing much these days, what with the state of the place, but with the Aschen moved on a semblance of peace and order had been restored to the temple and people were easing back into the routines of their day to day lives.

For Rynhart that lay in his habit of brooding over what lay beyond the temple. This place and this cause, they had always been Rhea's, not his. She was the visionary after all.

He lowered the flute as his thoughts wandered to Rhea. It wasn't uncommon for the pair to part ways, sometimes for decades but he always felt a restlessness to keep on the move in her absence. A pull to be somewhere other than where he was.

Such was the depth of his thoughts that he failed to note the arrival of figures in the distance. It wasn't until they were nearly atop the temple that he noted their approach. Tucking his flute into the folds of his thick coat he rose from the rock and strode for the base of the steps to meet them when they arrived.

An ATW maneuvered through the mountains as it was designed to do, with its large, flat paws giving it a perfect balance. It had been modeled after both Misranan and Earthen fauna, so it had a familiar shape, but an alien presence. Flesh, bone, and metal, the Uncia Vey, six feet tall and thrice as long, with a catlike presence, with limbs reinforced with cyborgian technology, made its way up to the temple.

As they made their way to the courtyard, it flicked its tail, which was longer than the body itself, made of metal plates that lined its spine. At its end were barbs. The beast stopped in its tracks as Rynhart came down the steps to meet them. There was a release of pressure, a high hiss, as the cockpit door opened along those plates, lifting to reveal two figures- a lanky, drunken man and a thin woman who was sitting in the pilots seat, expression slightly annoyed.

"Rida, I'm tired of your behavior. Our planet is on the brink of war and you are drunk. In the very least, you could do not to embarrass us as we look for allies to help us!" she hissed quietly, just before carrying her eyes over to Rynhart. She gave him a charming smile.

Rahuna grabbed Rida and pulled him out of the ATW. She landed perfectly, he landed with a stumble.

She gave the man a bow. "Hello, I am Rahuna Kell, from the planet Misrana. I am representing the Rebellion. Are you of the Patronus?"

"I am," Rynhart replied. "My name is Rynhart. I'm afraid Rhea and Arrow are both absent if they're who you came to speak with, and you may need to be more specific as to which rebellion. We're a long way from Misrana, news doesn't reach out here often."

He took note of the child and woman with a frown. They weren't of the Patronus, and this was no place for refugees. He supposed they could be remnants of the Windcrest volunteers that had offered assistance with the Aschen wounded, but with the Aschen gone these stragglers should have returned to Windcrest by now. He would need to speak with the Knights of Le'thorian later about finding out what they were still doing here.

Terra would find that the temple grounds were quite busy, with several people gathered in the courtyard and a handful of Knights of Le'thorian patrolling the grounds. There had been no word or sign of the Taiyou since they had pulled out of the mountains a week ago but the knights continued to maintain a watchful vigil.

The interior vestibule would be just as lively as the exterior with people coming and going about their daily activities and scholars made their way through the halls with books and scrolls under arm. Spacious and with tall windows to allow plenty of light in, the room had an almost regal atmosphere. Towering pillars and artfully carved bas reliefs dominated the room alongside statues of heroes come and gone. Overhead an indoor balcony ran the length of either side of the hall where still more knights patrolled the walkway. With three patroni dead at the hands of Taiyou soldiers it would seem that the temple wasn't leaving anything to spare in their security for the time.

Meanwhile back out in the courtyard still, Rynhart continued to converse with Rahuna.
