Setting

The Temple Grounds

A spacious courtyard is situated at the base of the temple and several small out-buildings surround the area. To the east lies the temple barracks, a formidable and defensible structure that currently houses the Knights of Le'thorian and their Captain, Arrow Flight. Much of the structure has been raised from rough hewn rock from the mountain itself, leaving it laced with rich veins of adamantine to reinforce the walls.

To the west is a large training yard surrounded by sturdy stone walls. The rich veins of adamantine within the mountain leave the natural hewn walls of the training yard well capable of withstanding a great deal of abuse.

To the north the main temple itself stands sentinel over the icy peaks, both tall and proud with its banner flying high. Wayward soul or hero to be, all with benevolent intentions will find sanctuary within these halls.

The Mountain Side Temple serves as the central base of operation for the Patronus, an ancient order of champions and heroes, and an ever present call can be felt to those of a heart to walk the path of the Patronus. With a vast array of knowledge contained within its library, the temple also serves as a strong lure for scholars and historians. Adding to the diversity of the temple residents, wayward travelers often pass through its halls.

Aereth plummets to the surface at 240 miles per hour. He tries to steer himself away from the temple. The fields of his ship power down all at once, creating a loud boom that is heard for hundreds of square miles. Finally he slams into the ground at the entrance of the great structure, pluming snow and dirt a hundred feet upwards. His crater is small as he landed on the stone entrance, which was barely hurt by the impact.

"Made it..." He exhaled before sitting up.

"Excuse me," a young woman spoke up as she passed Achaeos and Jasmira on her way to the library. "I couldn't help but overhear, but if you two are looking for Rynhart, he's probably outside in the training yard. That's usually where you can find him this time of day."

Achaeos looked towards the young woman with a raised eyebrow, before smiling and nodding to her. "Thank you, Miss. It is appreciated."

The kitsune gestured to Jasmira, "Shall we seek this training yard out together then?" he suggested. "My name is Achaeos." he added with a bow as he began to walk in the direction the woman had indicated.

Aereth approached the entrance and knocked at the large doors. The old fortress looked no different with every visit no matter how many universes he lived through. He was sure he'd see familiar faces.

Jasmira, despite being half frozen, managed a smile for the kitsune who seemed to be friendly enough. She uncrossed her arms long enough to reach down and pet the poor jungle cat's cold ear.

"Rynhart in the training yard it is." she said with a grin. Turning, she walked in the same direction as Achaeos. Protectively, Chi, the large black cat, padded softly along between the two. Nice or not, these people were still strangers and it was his duty to protect Jasmira. Of course, any feat would be hindered by how cold and stiff his muscles were.

"So, you are visiting here as well, Achaeos? I must admit I know very little of the patronus. I must seem crazy for coming all the way up here barely wearing sleeves and traveling with an animal better suited for tropical weather. Though I have to admit, this is not the craziest thing I've ever done." A smile snuck onto her features.

The air about the Temple filled with an acrid foul stench, tendrils of blue and purple smog wafting into the Temple grounds, though only faint as the wind brought then sent away the gasses, however less ignorable than the smog a low rumbling of large creatures moving with considerable speed was carried along with the foul smell by the howling winds, those who would look to the north beyond the temple would see a swarm of Tyrant Wyrms, the reptilian monsters charging with terrible bellows and shrieks as they closed on the temple, intent on giving the defenders of the holy sanctuary as little time to prepare for their assault as possible.

Even before the smog came, a graceful figure had emerged from the temple building, stepping out to gaze down at the steep incline that dropped off to the north of the temple. Aiedai looked to the nearest Knight of Lethorian, catching his attention with a wave of her hand. "Tell Knight Captain Lockhart and Rynhart to ready for defence. Many violent, bestial presences draw near from the north."

A few minutes later, the rumbling started, and the creatures came into sight. The ethereal girl stood at the top of the incline leading to the temple and looked down at the approaching swarm, before waving a hand. A series of loud cracks echoed across the mountain, swiftly followed by a thundering that matched the Wyrms' for its volume and ferocity.

The combination of their stampede and the psionic's carefully positioned blasts had triggered an almighty avalanche. With Windcrest lying to the south, there was little for Aiedai to worry about causing collateral damage to in triggering the destructive landslide of snow that now roared down the mountain towards the tide of creatures.

Her expression remained impassive throughout, gazing solemnly down at the wyrms even as they were met by the crushing wall of white.

The head of the pack, the Great Tyrant reared up and bellowed as if answering the roar of the avalanche, standing momentarily on its hind legs as it turned to the wall of white, baring its teeth and its flickering purple eyes blazing with light as it spoke in an alien tongue, the very words filled with an aura of hatred and dread, screaming its fell dialect into the wind and tearing at the fabrics of reality itself with a fury.
"SHADETH NORAH HAH DYA NORIR!!"
A ripple exploded outwards from the towering beast colliding with the wall of snow with the force of a bomb, the snow bubbling and boiling suddenly, turning black and brackish like some sort of steaming tar, the substance's decent slowing down rapidly as most of it hardened and clung to the surface of the mountainside and the boulders trapped in the snow fall, trapping them in place, the few that still fell being batted aside by the Great Tyrant or one of their smaller counterparts, the remainder of the sludge that did make it to the Wyrms did little to hinder them only slowing down a few of the smallest Wyrms.

As the echo of the guttural tongue echoed across the mountain carried by the winds to the Temple the fell energies carried by them tore at the minds of any lesser beings who would be swayed, instilling fear and seeds of madness within their minds.

The Great Tyrant fell back to all fours, its witch-light eyes falling upon the temple once more as it bounded forward alongside its brethren locking its sites upon the new source of energies permeating across the mountainside, a cruel, eager intelligence and an insidious desire directing itself upon the ethereal psychic.

As the call for defense was sounded and the screaming sounds of the avalanche and worms, Sha Li rushed to strap on her armor and grab her nearby shield. She considered going to join the others below but she ran up the stairs to one of the highers floors and out onto one of the walkways facing the north. She gazed down at the scene below.

Placing her Shield and staff on the ground she retrieved three metal spheres from her belt and began to mutter an enchantment over them before lobbing them over the mounting to fall in the path of the approaching worms. When they landed they would produce a nasty web of electricity in an area around the ball if movement was detected.

After tossing them she retrieved her shield and staff and waiting in preparation she wanted them to get a bit closer before she attacked from above.

It had been with a strict, unflinching purpose that Anzo Tinzdale had travelled to this place, his purpose murky and unclear, but his desire strong. It had been a long time - too long - since he had felt himself so driven to complete a journey, and this was urged on him with force that had him making the trip to the mountains in a mere four days on foot, braving winter chill and heavy rain to push onwards.

He had been struck by a sense of calling, an attempt to reach outwards towards like minded people, surround himself with the good, the upstanding.

So, with his so looking forward to meeting the famed Patronus, to comforting himself in knowing that the war he waged against unjust circumstances and those that would do evil, it was practically a law that the temple be under attack by foul creatures when he arrived over that last peak.

With a heavy, weary sigh, the gunslinger drew both of his pistols, each filling his hands with a hard snick of glove and steel. Adjusting the chamber of one of the revolvers, he fired a shot into the air, the bullet exploding in a magical torrent of rain that hailed down onto the temple grounds, intending to clear the smog for any defenders stationed there.

Another quick adjustment, and the gunslinger fired twin rounds into the crowd of advancing Wyrms that would hit the ground like mortar shells, explosive force that would quake the earth around wherever they impacted.

One final adjustment to his pistols, and the gunslinger adjusted the brim of his hat, frowning into the crowd. He knew not the reason for the assault, but force would be met with force.

Inserting a small rebreather into his nose and mouth, Anzo began walking towards the crowd, firing both pistols, the bullets finding targets with aim borne of a century's training, the gunslinger's facial expression calm, serene, unflinching.

Let the beasts come, and let them be vanquished.

Josh descended from the clouds, the spectre scowling as he saw yet another battle beginning to rage.

"Taima, you bitch. Can't you at least keep the riff-raff off the front doorstep?"

Floating lower, he saw that these were living creatures, albeit foul as they came. A slight, cruel smile, the dark light of Kushin's gleam entering his ghostly eyes as he merely dropped from the sky into their midst, simply passing through the drakes to come into contact with the ground. The smile widened, as the spirit merely reached his arms out to touch the nearest beasts, an entropic touch that would literally begin to siphon the life from their wretched bodies into his own incorporeal form.

If one were to pull away, he would simply turn to the next, reaching out a hand that might as well have been a cruel, lethal claw, the mere brush of his fingers a terrible weapon for which no mortal armor was match for.

A figure cloaked in strange, alien, black robes stood high on the cliff edge. His face was concealed in complete darkness by a cowl and hood. Metallic chainplate cascaded down his torso and pelvis. The figure gripped a long staff in his gloved hand. It was adorned with a small horned skull that resonated with demonic energy. He stood as a silent spectator to the battle. An aura of darkness and demonic inferno surrounded the figure like a fiery maelstrom.

These strange reptilian creatures had assaulted this humble monastery. Though it was apparent to the Hellfire Saint that these monks, warriors, or whatever inhabited this secluded compound were by all means not defenseless, they were heavily outnumbered.

Gal'mok Fireblade lifted his staff to the heavens and cried with a thunderous voice that penetrated the soul like a rusted knife. "Bely ofk xletzafy loef ihaf swyy, tafrlydz!" the demonic words rumbled as the sky darkened. A vortex of sickly green energy materialized in the clouds, surging with the bonfires of souls burning for eternity. "Blat swy ozw zwodd olezy o sesof ab zsafy ofk wyddbely sa plizq uai xyfyosw esz wydd!"

"Fire and brimstone rain upon thee, mongrels! From the ash shall arise a titan of stone and hellfire to crush you beneath its heel!"

Snow crunched under the Fae's boots as he crept his way towards the sound of combat. He wasn't exactly sneaking, just sort of moving along at a leisurely pace, unconcerned by the shouts and clashes he heard from ahead. His Regalia was in it's default state at the moment, crystalline armor in deep hues of blue and bright hues of ultramarine, translucent in the center to reveal the silvery bodysuit he wore beneath. He'd added a midnight blue cloak to the ensemble, with a mantle around the shoulders and a deep hood, but the material seemed to be a thin cotton as it floated in the breeze and clearly wasn't to keep out the cold, who's teeth couldn't sink themselves into the Unseelie Fae's skin very well even should he choose to stride into the heart of Winter in his birthday suit.

He was approaching the battle with nothing so much as almost hostile levels of nonchalance in his posture and stride, though his long, long sword was held casually in his right hand as if as an afterthought. The blade was of the same material as the armor, long and slightly curved, and looking rough hewn with it's asymmetrical single edged construction, though it's edge was razor sharp and it's length well maintained. The tsuba or crosspiece was a square medallion of silvery metal, unadorned and worn smooth by the ages, and the hilt was wrapped in a thin, supple black leather of some sort, with black rayskin beneath. The pommel of the weapon was capped in similarly unadorned silvery metal, smooth and untarnished, winking in the light like a faraway star.

Again the master wizard found himself traveling again up the side of the accursed mountain up to the temple he had visited for just several seconds before being torn away from his interests. It was however an attempt in vain as his research would once again have to be put aside as things seemed to take a turn for the worse as foul magics were being woven in the air creating a horrible miasma and a terrifying scene for those who were looking above at the mess before them. "By the Time Refraction Paradox! What in the Seven Hells is all of this mess!" Bigsby shouted as he tightened his grasp upon the brim of his hat as a foul wind blasted by him that emanated a horrid aura. The elderly wizard could only frown as his sapphire orbs glowed from beneath the shadow of his mammoth sized cap and stared up at the temple above and the goings on before him.

"Rataki ishval morefex kil'kir!" Bigsby's words trembled with old archaic power that sent a surge of energy through his body and out from his outstretched fingertips to the sky while he held his massive hat in place and watched as the rays of the sun slowly began to push their way through the edge of the dark clouds miasma above. The old wizard then began to take several more steps as he removed his hat and reached inside of it pulling out a strange pulsating orb of fire that seemed to burn brightly as it touched the open air. "Kirxian valketh morshalveir hoken!" It was with those words that the pulsating fiery orb took off up towards the sky towards the light that forced its way through the edges of the clouds and up to the sky above only to shatter and explode in a fiery golden light as it reached the clouds above. This was nothing more than a distraction in hopes of throwing off what evil sorcerers or wizards were casting their spells so that Bigsby could quickly make his way up the slope of the mountain and towards the temple. After all in the name of research this was the only right answer he could possibly conceive.

A young half-elf trailed behind the elderly wizard, he looked up at the temple in awe it was marvelous. But then he quickly noticed it was under attack. He wasn't entirely sure why Master Bigsby had chosen to go here but he wasn't going to question that now. He kept trecking up the mountain quickly behind the wizard with a bit of magic he figured they would reach the top in moments. "Vesiria al quicen" Noah muttered under his breath and it was apparent his pace quickened.

"Master Bigsby what is this place? And what is that dreadful sound?" He asked as got closer to the elderly wizard. He could see figures a bit more clearly. "Are we here to aid in the battle or is this just a concidence?" He asked as he gripped his staff a bit tighter as he kept in stride behind Bigsby.

Rida and Rahuna had made their way to the courtyard after discovering Rynhart didn't have time for them. Rahuna was incredibly disappointed, but she had to look forward to the future. There were much more important matters at hand. These Wyrms, for one.

"I'm not sure if we're going to be able to get out of here very easily. It sounds as though there is something dangerous going on. I can't be sure. It really took Mister Rynhart's attention, however. What in the world are we going to do..."

Rida rose a hand and scratched the back of his head with a shrug. Rahuna walked right up to him and firmly slapped him on one cheek, then the other. It wasn't hard, but it was enough to get him out of his daze. "Won't you wake up and try thinking, Rida! You're supposed to be ordering me around! I'm your subordinate, but I've been taking full charge of a position I shouldn't be taking charge of at all!"

Rida pushed her away rudely, holding out a hand. "Don't... fine, just gimmie a moment..."

Rahuna rolled her eyes and continued to walk. "Grow up, Rida. You might not have a lot more time to do s-" Her breath was cut short with a gasp. The many beasts that were crawling up the mountain, charging an avalanche that rushed down to meet them. "Rida! Rida, look!"

As more and more of the temple residents were filling the courtyard, the deep resounding trumpet of a horn echoed through the icy peaks signaling trouble at the mines. Unfortunately the mines were situated down near the base of the mountain and it would take time to reach them - for most.

It was Tahlia who answered the threat as the young mage called out to others.

"Sha Li! Anria!"

Tahlia could only teleport a few people with her without running up a risk of dismembering people, so she kept her passengers to just two individuals. Anyone else seeking to lend aid at the mines would need to find their own way, or make use of the portal room at the top of the temple.

A shadow swept past overhead to draw the gazes of many in the courtyard. Was it some new threat from the wyrm menace trying to reach the temple?

What they were met with was no wyrm though. It was the massive form of a purple dragon, with its amethyst scales looking almost black within the shadows of the evening hours.

It headed towards the pass that led to the temple - the choke point that the wyrms would need to breach before they could reach the temple. As the great behemoth swept past overhead it opened its massive maw and belched out a billowing cloud of purple miasma. The thick smog rolled through the pass and engulfed the horde of wyrms in its noxious fumes that corroded rock and ice, and would serve to decay flesh from bone of any caught within it. Those that inhaled it - should they survive the corrosive nature of the smog - would be subjected to an insanity causing pathogen. For those susceptible to such things, it that would throw its victims into a frenzy and leave them just as likely to tear each other apart as their enemies.

Unfortunately it would seem that the dragon had failed to spot Josh amid the wyrms - a relatively easy mistake to make when there was a lone friendly among a horde of enemies. Given his already dead nature, Josh would be spared the decaying aspect of the miasma as well as the infliction of insanity due to his likely lack of need to breath, but the corrosive touch might still pose a threat if he had physical substance to his undead form.

Meanwhile a dozen Knights of Le'thorian were filtering their way into the courtyard from the temple where they had arrived via the portal room. Shelby was not among them as it had been determined that it would be dangerous to leave Windcrest unprotected so soon after it too had been attacked, but she had sent a handful of reinforcements to aid at the temple should they require it.

The knights were quick to report to the most senior member at hand, who appeared to be Aiedai.

Aiedai's eyes pulsed with ethereal cosmic energy, as she sought out the mind of the leading wyrm, the Great Tyrant. The abominable and twisted chaos of the creature's mind might have driven other psychics to insanity in an instant, but there was more to the girl that stood in the path of the wyrms than her psionic abilities.

The almighty mental might of the star spirits within her came to bear on the mind of the great creature and denied it.

Fall, creature of destruction. Begone from this world.

Rending astral energy tore through the Tyrant, seemingly from its own mind, striking at its very essence as opposed to merely its physical form.

Die.

In the meantime, Anria rushed to Tahlia's side in response to her call, ready to be taken to the mines below.

Sha Li had still been waiting for the hoard to get closer when she heard a faint call for her from below. Grabbing her gear she ran back inside the temple and down the stairs to meet the others in the courtyard.

"Did someone call for me?" She asked looking around, she noticed Anria rushing to Tahlia's side and walked over. "Did I hear my name?" She asked.

Kynan had heard the bells and the call for battle. He carried his repeating cross bow and a few cartriges of ammo along with a small short sword and a few of his latest tinkerings. They weren't fancy but it was clear by the fuse that these were some type of rudimentary grenades.

"Did it tell you it's name? Anything about it? How do you know its not Lucifer playing some trick? Why did you even speak to it?" Enzo's tone began resembling a worried mother more than a holy soldier.

"It wasn't Lucifer." Taylor's words traveled through his chattering teeth, hitting the air as a harsh, low, hiss. The two exchanged glances, a silent conversation that spoke louder than any words could. He still blamed him, he blamed them all. The Hands, Liz, his father, everyone.

Throughout his life, all people were to him were vultures. Grabbing at him, stealing a piece of flesh, and retreating to ready themselves for their next handful. It became harder and harder every time, his body growing barer, yet there was always someone around to prop him up and prepare him for another feast.

And there he was, ready to feed the birds again. Perhaps this time they'd be full.

Indeed they had arrived. The courtyard was filled with people coming and going about their business and one could hear the sounds of sparring from the distant training yard. It wasn't just patroni that had found their way to the temple though. Travelers, scholars, and the occasional resident of Windcrest often passed through the falls of the temple that lay before them.

As such the trio blended well enough.

Knights of Le'thorian where posted at the temple entrance and atop its walls, but they weren't stopping anyone from come and going. In fact, there seemed to be an air of ease about them.

As the trio made their way up the steps and through the doors, they would find themselves in the vestibule.
