The crack opened into a tunnel easily large enough for two grown men to walk abreast. It's walls and floor were of the same sort of stone as all the rest of the place, but again here it seemed as though the solid, strong stone that should by all rights have lasted for centuries, had simply crumbled away. There was no dust or debris either, it was as though it had fallen away to nothing.

The tunnel was a steady, steep downgrade, heading down and far below the city. At the farthest end, well beyond Russians sight, a dull red glow throbbed in the distance, like the beating heart of the world itself.

It was not a welcoming sight.

Russian grabbed his rifle from his shoulder with a round already chambered. An ominous red glow...Not a campfire that was for sure. He was probaly walking in some shit that was probaly going to be very bad. But he gets paid to do this shit everyday. Or at least that what he would love to say if this way his first job in nearly a few months.

Russian would find himself delving deeper and deeper, and while at first that caution was well warranted, it quickly became apparent that the tunnel went deeper under the city than he first believed. For hours he would be walking in the dark and gloomy tunnel, each step taking him deeper and deeper into a stuffier and stuffier depth. And all the while the red glow remained constant, never growing or dimming.

This was odd...He felt like he was in one of those infinite corridor situations. The situation that no matter how far you walked you keep arriving at a set point. Of course, he knew he was going deeper into this mess of a tunnel. Still...He already knew he was probaly going to need an emergency evacuation plan at the end of this rabbit hole.

Girl be damned, if she was already dead and he walked into a trap. Would be hard to run up a few hours back through the tunnel. In that case...He casually activated his device attached to his arm and tapped one of the icons. The things he had to do to get some extra cash...

After what felt like several more hours of walking, a sudden shift or change brought Russians attention to the walls. No longer did they seem as though the tunnel had formed from stone crumbling away, but rather clear marks of shaping were present. Someone, or something, had come through here and started to carve steps into the floor, and odd markings into the wall.

Further along the tunnel opened up into a massive cavern. In the center of this was something akin to a gemstone, about eight feet tall, and thick enough that six men could stand around in and still not be able surround it.

This gem was the source of the dull red glow, and here it was much the same, muted and red, like the sleeping embers of some long forgotten fire. All around this were thousands upon thousands of people, ashen faced and blurry eyed. They all stared somberly and silently into the gem, unmoving, seemingly dead save for the small, shallow breaths that still wracked their frames.

Russian crouched low as he watched what was going on. What was this? Some sort of cult? Brainwashed people? Hell if he knew. Maybe the girl got kidnapped and was staring like a zombie at the gem. Looked valuable. Like hell he was transporting something like that around.

Still, he had a job to do and hiding around was not going to help him. Standing up and walking out into the open, he began to walk like it was a normal walk in the park. He just had to find the girl, drag her out of neccecary. If anyone tried to stop him, fill him full of lead.

A short distance away from the stone itself, Russian would see the girl. But his stroll through the group would quickly reveal to him the nature of the crowd.

Most of them looked like orphans, homeless people, addicts, or other such dregs of society. The merchants daughter being grabbed was clearly a fluke of chance and not an intentional result.

But the second thing he would notice was that each and every one of the people here looked like they were broken, not just a metapher either they looked physically broken. Many of them had cracks and breaks in their flesh, which had started to blacken around the wounds. It wasn't just a change of color either, they appeared as if they were turning into a sort of burnt husk, as the areas around the cracks in their bodies looked brittle, as cinder.

“Well shit...Forget cultists, might as well be encountering some eldritch like shit...” He muttered under his breath as he proceeded forward to where the girl was. Not holding his breath of course, if every other sap here was looking like humanoid ash then chances are she is the same, probably dead, soul destroyed or whatever magical death happened to these people.

With a sigh he walked up to his target, little more natural then talking a stroll through a park. He soon looked at her, he was pretty sure she was dead. But his job was to find her regardless. At least bring back a body for the guy, that works.

The girl was only recently added to the throng, and it would seem that time is a factor with this regard. She was pale from lack of sunlight, but otherwise seemed perfectly healthy.

As he approached her however, the others in the group began to take notice of him, some of the ones that seemed less broken than others began to moan, their voices little more than whispers. They were pleading desperately "Help me" And various other variations as they begged, unmoving save for their eyes, to be saved.

“I’m not a charity worker.” The man waved off their pleading as he looked at the girl and decided to pick her up. What did he look like? A knight in shining armor come to be the hero? Hell no, he was a mercanary. He did things for money...But his partner would probably give him a long talking too. He gave a sigh as he turned to face the strange crystal. “Fuck it...Fine!” He dug into his pocket and sighed.

What was he supposed to do? It’s not like there was a voice in his head to tell him what to do. Blow the crystal? And cave in the place along with his target? Fat chance. Drag them all? Like he has more than two arms. Screw it, if it’s too complex solve it simply. He unshouldered his rifle and chambered in a heavy caliber round, more than a few calibers Of raw stopping power. Equipped with a rocket propelled firing mechanism, along with a tipped barrel for blasting a hole in a line of tanks, he took aim and fired at the gem with a massive gunshot that echoed.

The bullet ricochetted off of the crystal with a pearly crystaline sound. If it were to be inspected, there would be no blemish or mark found upon it, as though the powerful weapon that was used did nothing at all.

But there would be no chance to inspect, as at the moment that the crystal was assaulted, the eyes of each and every individual in that room suddenly blazed with fire, their skin cracking and burning from within, even the woman he held screamed in agony, as did all the others.

The sudden chorus of pain and fear echoed off the walls of the chamber, reaching a pitch like the frenzied howling of a storm. And then, as one, still screaming, the throng rose up and began lurching towards russian. Their actions were slow and clusmy, as though they resisted their own motions, yet could not.

With grasping hands they would reach out to latch onto, to drag the mercenary to the ground and suffocate him in a burial of screaming and thrashing bodies.

“Well shit...There’s goes my money down the drain!” He yelled out. So be it, he rather bring down the whole place now. His target might as well be some damn zombie now. In fact it was like a horde of zombies. He was an Ace mercanary, and he was not worried at all. Still...Plenty Of numbers, there was an easy way to get rid of them all.

As much as he rather not, it’s been awhile since he used one. Grabbing a small device from his Wait he activated it in threw it close to the crystal. A black hole grenade, of course...It was not litteraly a black hole, if it was it would suck up the whole planet whole. It was more akin to a vortex like effect...But he prefer black hole grenade because it sounded cooler. It’s event horizon was like a black hole, sucking everything inside it however after a set amount of time it would implode upon itself. With the grenade primed and ready to explode in the next few seconds he activated another device on his belt and attached a bayonet to his rifle before running the opposite direction to where he came from. Cutting anything that got in his way with a high frequency blade...Only it was like a makeshift high frequency spear...

Melee was not his strong suite, but then again it was hard to bring a massive hulking mech down here.

The second the grenade went off, several dozen people were sucked into it, but not nearly as many as there ought to have been.

The crystal in the center of the room flashed, and the grenade ceased to be, a faint limning of energy connecting where the weapon had been, and the crystal proper.

The remainder of the people in the room suddenly dropped and began to groan. The crystal seemed to have lost it's power over them, and the merchants daughter rubbed her head, her voice shaking as she said "What.... happened?"

Before the mercenary thrust his bayonet into another person, the whole group of people fell to the ground after a quick flash from the crystal remove the grenade...Presumably to save itself, but it looked like it had to break off the strange spell over the people. Well...Maybe his wallets would be filled after all.

"Hey kid, I just saved you and I guess everyone else in this room." The mercenary spoke with a pridful grin. "Alright! Listen up everyone! I don't care about any questions at the moment! But right now everyone leave through that entrance quickly!" He ordered everyone in the room to get a move on.

If it decided to use its power, then he would be back to square one.

Most of the people who had been here much longer, as could be determined by the cracks and other changes to their bodies, seemed groggy and unresponsive. Indeed they seemed to suffer symptoms of withdrawal, as though the crystal functioned as a drug for them, leaving them with a need for it.

The ones who could hear, could still function, barely managed to crawl to the caverns entrance before they too succumbed to the effects of losing the crystals influence over them.

The merchants daughter, thankfully, was a recent arrival, and was far less keen on staying. She immediatly started stumbling her way to the cavern entrance, seeking escape, though her body was weak and she seemed to be suffering a frailty to her body that left her incapable of navigating on her own.

Russian sighed as the girl was barley doing well. Well, saving everyone was secondary since it saved him the headache. But its not like he could drag them all out. He shook his head as he walked over to the girl and just picked her up bridal style to save him the trouble. "Just...Let me do this. Your father hired me to save you and that's what I'm going to do." He spoke deciding to carry her out of whatever this place was.

Still, at least he was going to get paid...And fir that he had a spring in his step. More money meant not starving and making machines of war. As he was quite happy for that.

Even as the merc and his money ticket got closer to the entry, the crystal began to shine again, and the victims began to convulse as it once more asserted control over them.

Several of them began to lurch to their feet and stagger their way after the mercenary, and the rest were quickly recovering.

As the crystal began to shine again, causing the people probably enslaved under it to become controlled again. He decided he had enough of its tricks. "Shove off you stupid stone. I'm going to show you why I'm an ace!" He yelled as he put the woman down for just a second before grabbing a bunch of grenade like devices from his belt and threw them inside the room he had left. Explosives, plenty of explosive strong enough to cave it in. Even if it did that explosive removal he had a miniature nuke up his sleeve when it used its power to remove the first wave of explosives. Even it was strong, getting crushed under the weight of earth was not good. And even then, it probably wont be good to be buried in earth. Yep...Always get ready for the unexpected.

The crystal turned black as pitch, an empty void through which there was no light, no reflection, nothing at all. And from that nothing a hand reached out, or tried to.

It was like a fist the size of a planet was trying to reach out from that single black opening into oblivion, and when it could not reach into reality, instead a great, massive eye peered at Russian from beyond the darkness.

That eye was a singularly hideous thing, full of rage and sorrow and hatred, so much so that the sheer force of it's gaze was like that of a great beast peering down at a flea.

The grenades did not even explode, they popped like bubbles as a wave of heat so intense it would boil the sun itself rolled off of the stone and the great eye that glared from it. Several of the 'slaves' around the stone died then, they didn't even burst into flame they just turned to ash, so intense was the heat.

And deep in Russians soul, at the very core of his being, a primal instinct found in all living things would tell him to run and flee. The instinct to survive, as ingrained in the rabbit in the face of a wolf, would present itself even in the hardened mercs heart.

Whatever it was that stood on the other side of that stone, Russian would NOT want to face here.

Russian narrowed his eyes as he noticed whatever this thing was. Well...Its been awhile since he actually felt nervous for the first time in a long whole. A primal instinct to retreat...Been a bit since he felt this way...Like staring down that entity of war itself...Time to run for it. He grabbed the girl and carried her off and ran like hell. Yeah, he was standing no chance without his best mech at his side. So at the moment, a tactical withdraw was in order.

As the merc ran further and further away, the blood in his veins pumping and the beat of his heart ringing in his ears, the light from that strange crystal behind him got dimmer and dimmer, until he was once more in the shadow of the tunnel.

But though the light was gone, that fear would still plague him. It was more than just instinct, it was more than just terror of the unknown. Something was absolutely wrong in that cavern, and deep in the pit of Russian's bones he would feel it. This simple search and rescue mission had just revealed to him that something terrible was biding it's time.

The question was, what would he do about it.

“Woah...So much for a simple search and rescue...” The Merc sighed as he looked at the woman in his arms. “Eh...It’s not his problem now. He would simply leave it to local government officials to end in the army. Saves him the money and effforg at the end of the day. And hey, at least he could bring the girl back.

After informing the local government using his holographic terminal on his arm about a nice shiny crystal that is demonic in origion and probably would kill them if they were not smart enough to act. After that was done he decided to get out of dodge back to his clients house before the military got here.

Meteor has arrived, coming from Port Narita.
Meteor has left the area, heading east into Volaria.
