Setting

A small town by the sea. The medieval era still had its claws around the sleepy town, but it had begun to let loose bit by bit and in some places a bit of modern era buildings stood, but all matched the look that took over the rest of town. Taverns, markets, small schools, and other places littered the streets.

By the sea the docks and fish markets bordered the port on one side, a beautiful beach in the middle, and a cliff on the other side that looked over the ocean. Most people still dressed in the medieval clothing and it was very easy to spot the tourist.

There are a variety of small, secret coves in the area as well, often used by the children and people who live here for skinny dipping and sunbathing and so on. The town has quite a good business of procuring quality shells and even sometimes jewels are sold from here that were found.

Ebba blushed, "Maybe you can... when are you leaving?" She asked her before getting up and walking with Cynthia into the old fort. "I mean... if it is tonight that would be wonderful. Tomorrow.. a childhood friend wants to come. He is dead determined to come and protect me, though I have been doing well without him. Plus he isn't as friendly to humans as I am." She said softly.

Cynthia stopped dead in her tracks. "I can leave right now if that's your wish... I totally understand if you don't want me around when your merman shows up..." Cynthia's voice was a mix of anger and hurt.
"I'll be inside..." Cynthia said coldly slamming the door behind her as she headed in.

Ebba looked confused and jumped when the door slammed shut. She stood there speechless for a moment and hurried after her. "Is me wanting to leave with you that bad? Even after... you said you wish... he isn't my man in any sense of form. He is just a friend who likes to hold be back from the land and I much rather him not come on." She looked down at her hands. "I am... sorry if I offended you." She bowed a bit before turning back around and leaving, trying hard not to cry. In a day and a half she made a friend who she told her deepest secret too and just like that it was gone. Maybe her mother was right after all. Humans couldn't be trusted.

Cynthia sighed she felt like a total fool now. She slowly opened the door. "You where asking to join me? I thought you where talking about the village of land living mers... wanting me to leave..."
Cynthia sighed "Gods I feel like a fool now..."

Cynthia looked at Ebba " I'm sorry I snapped at you...my emotions like to act before my brain does... If you still want to come with me you can..but it is not an easy road I travel....and are you really sure you wish to leave everything behind? Your home, friends, family?. Ithink I just proved I'm a total idiot and jerk just now after all..."

Ebba looked over at her, "I am tired of my home. Of my friends and family holding be underwater. I want to travel the land and see what it has in store. I can always jump in water and swim away if I wanted to go back home." She said and looked back at her hands. "No one is perfect, mermaids included. You yourself said you liked my company and I like yours as well. I don't mind, I really don't. I only ask if it could be tonight because tomorrow he wants to come back to land with me and I much rather him not." She said softly.

Cynthia nodded. "If this is what you wish we will leave tonight. I only got supplies for one but if we leave at nightfall we should be able to reach a trading Post I know of by Dawn. Cynthia said as she lead the way into the old fort. " It is too risky to go back to town for supplies... If your friend comes looking for you the village will likely be the first place he goes and if someone were to open thier big mouth about us buying supplies it would tip him off on the plan.."

Cynthia gave a little smile "But if running away is what you seek you have definitely fell in with the right girl..."

Ebba's face brighten, "Really?" She asked and then looked completely afraid. "I... don't want to hold you back." She said softly as she followed her around. "I have only walked around the village and back to where I go back home. If you think this is too dangerous for you I won't go... I don't want you to get hurt because of me." She said and smiled softly, "You are too much of a good friend to do that to." She had took a step and tripped, accidentally clinging to her so she didn't fall. Once she realized what happened she blushed and scrambled away. "S-Sorry."

The fort looked much the same on the inside as on the outside other than the fact that the vines where replaced by some sort of green cave moss. Cynthia listened to Ebba as they walked deeper into the fort. When Ebba tripped Cynthia moved quick to catch her. Ebba clinged onto her and thier eyes meet for only a brief second though at the time felt like it could have been a few minutes.
Cynthia cleared her throat "Don't worry so much ok we will be fine." Cynthia reinsured Ebba.

Cynthia led Ebba into a good sized room with many broken tables and chairs around a fire pit. A small camp was set up near the fire pit. "This was once the Great Hall of the fort. It was here that the soldiers would meet and eat. As you can see this is where I have set up camp during my stay in this area."
Cynthia pointed down a hallway that leads to the armory. "Most of the weapons and armor in there is rusted junk but if you find anything you can use feel free. Just don't go to far down the hall unless you want your tail back.... It is a stairway that leads to the flooded Garrison quarters and the dungeon...beyond the dungeon is a cave that leads to the lake I mentioned earlier. I can hold my breath quite a while in my Werewolf form..."

Cynthia began to set wood in the fire pit "feel free to look around if you wish." Cynthia told Ebba. "I'll get us some food cooking."

Ebba straightened her dress and followed her. She smiled a bit when she looked around. It was beautiful in its own way. She ran her finger tips over the wall, feeling the moss brush back. Ebba listened carefully as she talked about who ate in the Great Hall and then the armory room. Her lips pressed together when she talked about the water and stopped. "You can swim in your wolf form?" She asked, smiling. "Mmm, but you can tell me when I come back. I want to see these weapons and armor that you talked about. I might be able to fix some of them." She said and happily ran towards the room. Ebba open the door and was hit with the smell of rust. She rubbed her hands and looked around. She laid her eyes on a dagger that wasn't too rusted over and brought it over to the fire.

Ebba sat down and held her hands over it, humming. Small light blue particles danced upwards and laid in a puddle close to the moss. Once she was done she brushed off the rest of the rust. "Tada!" She giggled.

While Ebba went to explore Cynthia started a fire. As the flames grew she set up a small spit with a pot over the fire. Into the pot she put chunks of beef, potatoes, and carrots. Add a little salt and soon a bit of a stew was in the making.
Cynthia looked up from her cooking as Ebba came back with a dagger. "The food will take a bit..." She started until her eyes blinked at Ebba's act of magic. "So you can use magic too? You continue to amaze me."

Ebba looked up at her, blushing a bit, "Magic?" She asked, tilting her head at her. She had no idea what this magic was, but if it is what she did then she guessed she had it. "I can do a lot with water. Also with the wind and air. Then there is the singing and my transformation, but you have incredible smell and can transform. Is that also magic?" She asked as she ran her fingertips on the flat part of the dagger.

"Well I don't know what your kind call it but what you just did we would call magic. As for my transformations and the powers that come with it...I guess it could be called magic...but it pretty much just comes with what I am.." Cynthia said

Cynthia turned to the pot stirred the stew a bit and looked back towards Ebba. I do have one trick I think you might like though..."

Cynthia pointed to the ground and muttered in the druid language. Where she pointed a dark grey fog appeared and out of it walked a wolf with white fur and blue eyes. Cynthia spoke again in druid again and the wolf headed over towards Ebba.

"You can pet him if you wish. He will not hurt you."

Ebba watched where she pointed and was amazed with the fog, but when the wolf appeared Ebba had to cover her mouth. He was gorgeous and she was itching to pet him so when Cynthia said she could, Ebba didn't hesitate. "Your fur... so soft. Ohh you are so pretty, do you know that? I bet you do." She giggled and looked over at Ebba, "Does he have a name? Where did he come from?" She asked excitedly.

Cynthia smiled seeing Ebba's reaction. "He is an ice wolf. They live in the frozen tundras of the Northland. As for his name...it is impossible to say in the common language...but it's meaning is Never Ending Winter. So, I just call him Winter.... I have other wolves I can summon but they are not as friendly as Winter here." Cynthia explained

Winter seemed to enjoy Ebba's attention resting his head on her lap panting softly. "Yep, he's a good boy" Cynthia said as she stirred the stew again. She took a little taste and declared, "It's ready! Fair warning though it will be no where near as good as our last meal together..."

Cynthia took out two small wood bowls and too wood spoons. She filled the bowls and handed one to Ebba. For Winter she pulled out a hunk of raw meat which he eagerly came over to grab dragging it back over next to Ebba where he began to dig in.

"Think he likes you." Cynthia said with a grin.

Ebba listened as she talked and petted Winter. "Winter." She repeated softly and giggled when he laid his head in her lap. Her fingers traced the outline of his ear before taking her bowl of stew and holding it close. It was nice and warm. "Mmm, but it smells so good." She said and watch winter grab his food and walk back to her. "I guess so." She laughed and began to slowly eat. It was good in its own way. She mmm'ed a few times while eating it. "Human food has so many flavors compared to ours." She said once she was done.

"Well lots more types of animals and plants up here on the land...I would have to think it would be quite boring just to eat fish all the time." Cynthia said. "I mean unless you have some sort of mercow I don't know about or something.."
She finished up her own bowl then looked at the pot. "There's more if you want it." She said as she got herself a second serving.

Winter had finished his meal and was happily gnawing on the bone as he rested next to Ebba.

Ebba laughed, "Mercow?" She covered her mouth, laughing more. "No no... just fish and seafood, really." She said and looked down at her new fur friend and petted him softly before going for seconds. She mmm'ed once again and looked down at her empty bowl. "I can wash these in the flooded dungeon thing if you want. As long as my legs stay dry." She said and Winter huffed as if he didn't want her to move. "Sorry, buddy." She giggled.

Cynthia nodded and handed over the dishes. "Just be careful... Take winter with you he keep you safe."
Cynthia turned to Winter and spoke a command in druid. Winter stood and took up a defensive stance next to Ebba.

"I'm going to go and check the entrance. Call out if you need anything ok."

Ebba nodded and hummed as she walked with Winter to the flooded dungeon. She got on knees and leaned down to wash there dishes when she started to hear the drops of water and wondered how the fort got flooded in the first place. Once she was done she looked at Winter and smiled. "All done. Shall we go see what Cynthia is up too?" Winter nodded and Ebba got up and walked back to where their fire was. She set the dishes next to where she was sitting before walking over to the entrance. "Cynthia?" She asked softly before slowly creeping the door open, Winter on guard also.

Cynthia took in a breath of the fresh air as she left the fort. She noticed the wind had picked up and the wind smelled of the sea.
Cynthia frowned and headed to the nearest tower. She climbed the tower the vines helping her until she finally reached the top. From there she could see clear back to the the town. She could also see the sea and a storm coming. Judging from what her foster mother the druid taught her about storms she figured it would be about an hour until the storm got to the fort. About that time she heard Ebba's voice....

Cynthia climbed down the tower jumping off about ten feet from the bottom. She landed on her feet and looked at Ebba. "I got some bad news... There's a storm heading right for us... should be here in about an hour..." Cynthia informed Ebba. "We have a few options.... We can try to get to the traders I spoke of but I'm not sure if we would get there before the storm caught up with us. There are some caves between here and there we could hold up in... Or we could just stay in the fort till the storm passes...the problem with stay in the fort is that this storm will take at least until the morning to pass over us and then we would have to move slow as not to catch up with the storm. I'm sure when you don't come back tonight your friend...and anyone else he might bring will be right on our trail with no headstart at all...I leave the choice to you.."

Ebba jumped, squeaking a bit, and hid behind Winter before realizing who it was in front of her. She laughed softly and covered her heart before hearing of the news. Her smile never left, but it did soften a bit. "Oh gosh... uhm...well.. this does put a dent in things. Either way I am going to have to be careful not to step in big puddles." She looked back towards the sea. "I could possibly push the storm back a ways... but I have a feeling someone else made that storm. Oh! I can just turn the puddles into crystals and move the water on the plants and stuff away." Ebba said excitedly before clapping her hands. "We can travel to a cave until the storm comes. It seems like the best option for us." She said while petting Winter.

"To the caves then." Cynthia said "Ok let's get everything packed up the quicker the better."

Cynthia led the way back into the fort to start packing.

When She and Ebba finished packing she would take the lead.

"Ok, keep close Ebba"
