This cave system is unnaturally dark, in fact it is like your senses are being systematically blocked for your stay here. As you go deeper the only sounds present are that of scraping... scuttling... screaming. Inhuman shadows cast themselves against a palid backdrop of blood and gore. You feel simply by being here that you are slowly losing your mind.

He lowered his arms by his side, allowing the illusion to take over. It seemed harmless enough, and the boy-creature didn't seem to have the intent to hurt them. Aderyn seemed to want to know if it was lonely, but Sincarro didn't see that as the most important question to be asking.

"We're here to investigate this cavern," he explained, seeing no reason to lie. "Something's going on down here and I need to discover what that is and whether it's dangerous enough to require further action. Do you know something? Are you all that's down here? Or is there something deeper?"

He started looking around at the surroundings of the illusion's interior. Perhaps there was a clue that would allow him to break it, if he ever needed to. It was never a failing to have a backup plan.

"Lots of hurt. Fear." The youth replied to Sincarro, "Deeper than deep and darker than dark. It doesn't venture that far down. It is a big fish up here, but very small deeper in. Barely scratched the surface."

They gestured around, "This place is nicer, yes? They were scared, but it made it better. Caverns are not nice. Filled with wrong. Things that thrive on the wrong. Like its brethren without minds, confused and angry and hurting. No place for ones like them."

Only then did they turn to Aderyn. "Lonely? Perhaps it is. It tries to speak with ones like them, but they reject it. It is not like them. Its brethren did terrible things, and now they hate it." They lowered their gaze to the ground. "It tries to understand them. But they don't let it."

Aderyn shook her head. They couldn't be so sure this entity was so friendly. It showed them lovely things, pleasant things, but as the fish to the hook...

They just had to get under its skin. Ivor had not warned her of anything, had not tried to shake her out of the vision, so for now she was safe.

She smiled at it, saying, "You know, one of us has a penchant for those no one else understands. I'll give you a hint-" She pointed her eyes at Sincarro. "It's not the pretty boy."

"Are there any... creatures down there? Anything more volatile? Something that leaves the caves?" the witch inquired. "We need to figure that out. We think there's something awful here."

"There are so many questions I want to ask, but we should probably go slowly so he has time to answer," Sincarro explained to Aderyn. He took out the notebook from his robe again, alongside a magical quill. With it, he began to write, quickly scrawling down notes on what was being said and by who. It was important to document everything for future reference, he always decided.

"I understand you're trying to be nice, but I must ask you to disperse the illusion, if that's okay. If we're going deeper into the cavern, our minds can't be clouded by such things. Here, I can't even see the cavern walls, despite knowing that they're directly in front of me in the real world."

"Something. It came here, started taking all the other things." They replied, a glimmer of fear crossing their face, "It took them and they became it, parts of it. It... I..." the youth stumbled over distinguishing itself from the thing they were describing through their language, "...hid from it, didn't want to become it. Hid from the screams and the fear and the pain."

The youth shuddered. "Disperse? Do they not like it? But ..." they hesitated, "It thinks they will not talk to it any more if they see what it is. This face does not make them run. But it can't have this face in what is real."

"... strange," mumbled Aderyn, trying to gather the information that the strange black shadow gave them, and turn it into an image within her head. "Took them... and they became part of it. Did it eat them?" Aderyn had to know. "Eat them alive? Is that what you're saying?"

She held up a finger and pressed it to Sincarro's lips. No. She didn't need him to be worried right now. "I'm accustomed to uncommon things. Things people normally are afraid of, or disgusted by. If you promise not to hurt us, I promise I won't run." She gave a warning glance at the blonde.

"he won't run, either. We need to see our real surroundings. It's important."

"She is right," he said, pushing her finger away from his lips. He was perfectly entitled to speak! "One of my greatest friends, Creature, is one of the ugliest things a mortal has ever lay eyes upon. I'm certain that you can't be nearly as horrible looking as he, and in any case, I'm not one to be scared away by appearance."

"I'll need to investigate more, but it sounds to me as though some sort of malevolent entity is absorbing the power of others in order to strengthen itself. I'm not sure what that entity might be, or why they're doing it, but from what you have described it is not a good sign at all. This entity, whatever it may be, will need to be forced out of this place. Every day it remains here, it likely gains more power from the unnatural conduits of magic that litter this place."

He began to think, once more pulling out his trusty journal and scribbling down almost an entire page of near indecipherable words as quickly as he could.

"I told you, Aderyn. We shouldn't have come here unprepared. By my experiences, we're going to need some sort of powerful stone, or soul gem, to separate this entity from his absorbed power, thus hopefully freeing them from this prison... Unless, of course, it literally is just eating things. In that case go ahead and ignore everything I just said, because I don't think it's possible to save something that's been melted by digestive acids."

"Not eat." they replied, shaking their head. "Attach. Join. Grow. It carries corpses in it, they are it..." they shuddered again before glancing between the pair, then at the scenery. "If they say so. It will bring them back to the dark."

As quickly as it had appeared, the beautiful fields began to fade back into the dark and bare caverns. The music became audible again, having previously become indistinguishable from the background noise of the illusion, but this time fading away. It grew quieter until it was gone entirely, along with the scenery.

A slithering sound followed shortly after, of something dragging across the stone. A shadow detached from the wall of the cave and slunk into the light of the staff. The creature consisted of a mass of tentacles that twined with one another and extended outwards in all directions, originating from a more solid mass of black in the centre. From that same centre, what appeared to be its main body originated, a stretched and unnervingly flexible torso with another pair of tendrils in place of arms. Its face was dominated by a pair of large white eyes, lacking in any pupil or iris to diminish their hollow stare. What might have been a head of messy long hair hung around its shoulders, but given that like the rest of its body, it was pure black, it was hard to tell whether it was hair or just a further extension of its body.

"They see it as it is now." Zexal said, its voice as eerie and chorus-like as before, many voices in many pitches speaking as one. "It does not want to hurt them. It doesn't like pain. But the monster... it is pain. All over. Made of pain, bodies hurting inside forever. Are they here to make it go? This one wants it to go. It hears them all the time, feels them suffer. Hates it!"

"Perhaps we might not have learned of this had we come in at another time. It's fully probable, don't you think?" she said to him. "Always expect to do things you don't prepare to. Do things on a whim. Might come in useful instead of trying to be ready for everything."

She brought her eyes down from the inviting, fabricated sky and let them fall upon the one thing the light from Sincarro's staff seemed to attach itself to. Though she made a face, squinting a bit to make out exactly what she was looking at, she didn't draw away when the images assembled themselves in her head and she got the full picture. In fact, she moved forward towards the creature. Foolishly, but kindly.

"It's nice to finally see you, Zexal," she smiled. "We can try to make it go. Do you know if the monster has a name? That might help me. Power is attached to a name."

The woman paused, looking back at Sincarro. "Did you hear that?" she asked him. She switched her attention to Zexal. "Did you?"

She let a pause flow by again. There it was. Faintly, so very faintly.

"Screaming?"

(I'm back. Sorry.)

"I have no idea what you are, but you look rather like you'd make a good tavern attraction. I can imagine you just sitting there in Ye Old'e Inn on a lone, country road, right besides a fire and attracting all the cute damsels that come through because of how strange and tentacle-y you appear."

He seemed to speak rather light-heartedly, and while doing so rubbed his hand over the glowing end of his staff in an attempt to make the light ever brighter so he could wash away the darkness. It didn't seem to have the effect he desired, but it was helping.. If only marginally. It was the faint scream pointed out by Aderyn that drew him back to the serious nature of their little quest.

"Well, on account of Aderyn's insisting that we press forwards, I suggest we move onwards to the source of that commotion." The Elfkin nodded his head like a wise old man, but looked rather peculiar doing it without a long beard or a pointed hat. "I don't expect you to come, Zexal. You may feel free to stay here and wait until I - or we - deal with this evil. I promise we'll put a quick end to this terror you and this cavern have been experiencing for the duration of it's stay."

With that, he looked for a further passage towards the source of the noise and began to journey onwards.

"This one is... they call it voidling. It speaks of taverns, warm place, singing and happy place. But they won't let this one in, when it comes they are afraid, angry. They drive it away." Zexal muttered in response to Sincarro.

"Name. Name, yes." Zexal repeated back to Aderyn, shrinking down fluidly as its face distorted into a pronounced grimace. "It says it, screams it. Gouuuuuulashh. Gouuulaaashh. This one has learned to fear it, more than the ones from the light."

Zexal shook its head, "They shouldn't go after it. It will take them as it takes the others. Big things, small things, all things. All it takes is a touch. Then they become it. It grows and feeds and screams."
