Setting

This is the entrance to Hell where the many people travel through, but also here are the undecided, those who sins were minor, those who think they deserve better. None do, they are all here because they are meant to be.

On the door up above is a sign post with burnt in writing saying:
“Through me you pass into the city of woe:
Through me you pass into eternal pain:
Through me among the people lost for aye.
Justice the founder of my fabric moved:
To rear me was the task of Power divine,
Supremest Wisdom, and primeval Love.
Before me things create were none, save things
Eternal, and eternal I endure.
Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.”

A great staircase descends downward from the entrance, through the vestibule, towards a rushing river in the distance.

Jean-Paul was silent the entire time as Tony spoke, as the first whiff of the foul stench had made him gag and hold his breath. The weight of his sins, of the lives lost, of the people he could have saved and didn't, they weighed much heavier than his suit ever would. For a moment his suit sagged, causing Ezrael to tilt his head curiously.

Then one foot rose and slammed down onto the ground, hard, letting out a small clap of thunder from the weight, arms raised up to either side, weapons armed and primed, and the man within steeled himself to speak through the disgust he felt.

"Failed?" he spat, "Failed? You failed god. Bring me the innocent soul from this boue, and I will take them to heaven. Otherwise, get the hell out of my way. You all deserve to be here. And when I die I will join you, and spit on each of you personally." Deep within the suit engines fired and prepared as a small flame ignited at the end of one arm, the threat of coming fire.

The voices did not stop instead they continued even louder while Tony just watched licking his lips, "It must be getting hard to breath in that suit I imagine, maybe you should remove it. Then again these people may tear you apart in utter hate. You promised these people salvation, freeing them from that evil and because of my betrayal you ignored them and let them suffer. And they suffered for days, hours, the Vampire Lord made each of their deaths a masterpiece in his view... perhaps it is time you saw what remained of the town."

The area suddenly morphed into the streets of Noxhold, screams ringing out, while people ran and buildings smouldered with raw intensity. It was the night that Jean-Paul had failed, the night where a Vampire Lord got everything he wanted and more. It was a memory, a memory constructed from all the souls in front of him, "Welcome to your legacy for Noxhold, the man who abandoned them to die. Look at what you directly caused despite promises to people you would destroy it. Feel the fire scorch your flesh and that smell with all those people just weeping and begging those aberrations." still the suit continued to fill up, "Let each of the deaths you caused in your life weigh down that suit until it bursts apart. YOU FAILED NOXHOLD."

"No, we're not doing this," Ezrael spoke, in conversational tone, but magic worked to amplify loud enough that it echoed over the din of the horror around them. He let the magic fall away a moment later so he could talk to Tony directly. "For a start, we're not in hell, not in the sense of the guilty will suffer. We're just visiting. On a mission from god, don't ask which one. And I should ask your hellscape to kindly go away. While I respect the physical laws don't hold much stock here... Power does." The last two words were spoken with a hint of a threat.

Ezrael was of course then distracted by the sound of movement and choking of Jean-Paul from within his suit, which prompted him to roll his eyes. "Oh come on now, it's obviously a hallucination. They're attempting to lure you into a trap of your own survivors guilt, a dirty tactic I might add but I suppose this is hell. Just relax, breathe. If you let this place have power over you then it will." His eyes slid across to look at Tony almost tauntingly.

Jean-Paul was loathe to take advice from Ezrael, especially when that advice reached his ears through a metal suit and through blood. But he had to admit, it was pretty good advice. Still... Hands raised to grasp the seals of his mask and tug them free, pressure (probably in the form of blood), escaping around it, until Jean-Paul lifted the mask up and off entirely. He wasn't afraid of facing his sins.

As the scene faded Tony looked at Jean-Paul with tears now in his eyes, malice gone, instead sincere regret, "To this day I hate that I abandoned you friend, I hate I let my own vice make such an abhorrent decision. I just wanted you to see me without your mask. I just wanted you to see despite what you think you have friends here. I can't continue with you, but I can say that once you leave here you will finally be without ally. This whole place is merely the entrance, most of us who linger here are hiding from what truly is to come, our place in the final scheme." pausing he sighed with sadness, "I can give one clue remember Brentonfold, you know what happened there and just know however things end up turning out, you are doing the right thing, so though you may not succeed in your view... there is sometimes little choice." with that statement he vanished into the crowd leaving the figures to continue onwards to the first obstacle, The River Archeron.

Jean-Paul kept a stiff upper lip. It was in his nature to do so. But his frown was not one of anger, but mourning. He could have done something. He could have said more.

"That was bloody stupid of you," Ezrael chastised, "What if taking off your helmet had gotten you killed? The entire trip would have been wasted from the get-go."

The frown turned to an unimpressed curling of the Frenchman's lip. "If you want us to move through Hell you must be ready to meet Hell half way. It is a place for sinners to face the crimes of their life. Denying such things is as dangerous as accepting them."

"The answer of a man who doesn't know any better. There's always another way," Ezrael answered with an unimpressed sniff.

"You cannot cheat hell, demon."

"We shall see."
