The man raised a brow as the sapling burst into flames. This was getting quite interesting. He saw the other ones burst into flames, and then looked around, after hearing the growling, and he slowly turned around, looking at the dog, and he raised his other brow, and chuckled. "So the stories were not lying in the slightest, you have big yellow teeth, and red eyes. Not a lie in that book it appears, but there's one thing that they got wrong......." he said with a smile.

"I will not scream for you, nor will you consume me, because I do not fear you in the slightest, because you do not scare me, not at all, when you've seen the things I've seen, then you will know that you are far below that, but I do have to say, you would frighten someone weaker very easily, and I applaud you for that" he said with an impressed tone of voice.

He crossed his arms and waited for the creatures response to him basically brushing it off.

The Hound paused. For a moment there was silence, other than the crackle of burned wood.

Then, unmistakably, there was laughter. Deep, thunderous, terrible laughter.

"Oh Humanity," chuckled The Hound. "I do so love you."

The Hound bared his teeth again, and leaped forward, his incredible weight behind his massive paws, a pounce capable of shattering any unfortunate stone the beast would happen to land on, to speak nothing of a being made of soft flesh.

The man just started laughing back, and then stopped, looking at the hound and then stepping back casually as it leaped forward. He waited until it landed and then grinned at it. "And how do you know that I am human?" he asked with a raise of the brow, and then shrugged, looking at it.

"I think we both know that this will keep going on forever, so maybe we shouldn't waste each other's time on that, and waste it on something else instead" he said with a sly smile, and then adjusted his coat.

"The name's Kendrick Rankin" he said casually, pulling out a cigarette, and lighting it. He then blew the smoke in the beasts face, attempting to make it frustrated at how this 'man' was just ignoring everything it was attempting to do in it's power to scare him.

The Hound smiled again, though a horrible perversion of a smile if that. The beast inhaled the smoked deeply, exhaling it thicker and blacker than it was before.

"I know no such thing, Small Meat," replied the Hound. "I can tell you are unafraid. I do not care about this. I have met idiots before." He began to pace around Rankin in a circle.

"What do you desire to waste your remaining moments on, Small Meat?" asked The Hound. "I am not my Brother. You have my attention and my curiosity. Were I he, there would be no words. How fortunate for you that I am not."

The man just chuckled, shaking his head again, he would be getting out of this place alive, he was quite sure of that. He just scratched his facial hair and then grinned, "At least I am not some mangy mutt rolling around in his own refuse like a pig, who knows what you were doing before I arrived here, you inbred coyote" he said with a certain roll to his words, something different............

Different than a human......

"Now, back to the business, before you feebly attempted to insult me, which was a failure if I might add, I am curious as to why you are hiding out here, and not claiming more terroritory for yourself, you are a strong, specimen of mother nature doing something right, despite what I implied before, so you should be out, claiming places for your own" he suggested with a very intelligent, calculating tone of voice, something that humans were not common to have in their system.

"Also, I cannot fear, was born without the ability to, makes me heartless, but that works out for the better in the long run" he said with a shrug".

The Hound sniffed at Kendrick, inhaling deeply, and exhaling more sooty black smoke onto him.

"I'm sure you believe your inhumanity makes you somewhat special." replied The Hound. "It does not. All meat like yours smells too similarly. Perhaps the intricacies are more obvious in taste." The black dog licked his lips with his immense tongue, still smiling.

"I enjoy this place," explained The Hound. "I am comfortable here. There is ample place for me to run, and plenty of food wanders foolishly into my domain." He chuckled. "But of course, you know that, don't you, Small Meat? I have no intention of conquest. I take not what I do not need. I will repeat for you; I am not my brother." The Hound continued pacing, though his circle around Rankin grew slightly tighter.

"Is that all?" growled The Hound. "Have you no more words to entertain me with? If not, then I offer you this; I will not burn you first. I will tear your throat from your screaming neck, but I will do it swiftly so as to cause very little pain. This shall be you reward for not boring me."

"But just because you aren't like your brother, doesn't mean that you can't take anything you want, but I do understand the concern for that, as taking too much can bring you down to the floor. Corruption exists in every little thing, and no matter what you do, there is always a small chance you being overthrown, even by the littlest of things, such as David taking down Goliath, and many other examples of the sort" he explained with a very intelligent tone of voice.

He stepped closer to the beast.......

"Now tell me this, in a world filled with fear, one with no fear at all could be of great use to someone with command over fear. One without fear could inflict the greatest amount of fear, as there are no fearful reprocussions of his actions that he well...feared!" he said with a chuckle, and then nodded his head.

"Now, as I said before, If you want to kill me, then go ahead, I will not attempt to stop you as you gave me time to speak, and in return, gained my respect" he said with a sly smile.

The Hound opened his jaws slowly, then shut them again without saying anything. He seemed to be thinking deeply, though his blazing eyes made him difficult to read facially.

"You truly are without fear, aren't you?" mused The Hound. "And wiser than I took you for. Small Meat, I believe you have won my favor. You spoke of corruption, yes? Well, your words are truth. And some of us," he continued, with a deeper, seemingly bitter tone, "are like children, not knowing when they've had enough. You could be of great use to me."

The Hound paced forward, coming right up to Rankin's face.

"If you are willing to heed me, to act in my name, to reap the natural fear of the predator, you may have my boon. Are you ready to receive my mark? If you are," The Hound breathed seriously. "Then remove your trappings."

"See, as you said, I could be quite useful" he said with a chuckle and then raised a brow, "You just need to control how they are, exhibit anger towards them and they will fear the one who controls the fear" he said and then nodded his head, stripping down to his pants, and he looked at The Hound, grinning slyly at the creature. "One thing, If you try to mentally control me in any kind of way, I will burn you to the ground, as if you were those trees that you burned" he said with a very serious tone of voice.

"But other than that........" he added with a chuckle.

"You have my promise to strike fear into the ones who do not think we are dangerous, and any of the others who think that they are the most powerful. They will be struck down from their throne and killed, I give you my promise not to expand into territories that are not useful, and take the one's that are" he finished with.

"Good boy," answer the black dog, lifting has enormous paw, resting one great claw high on Rankin's chest. The tip was rather uncomfortably hot, though not unbearably so.

"This is going to hurt," added The Hound, turning a toothy grin. "A lot."

The tip of his claw suddenly burst into a great red flame as he plunged it into Rankin's flesh, dragging it down and through, before removing it and plunging it back in, carving an "X". He did this one more time, making a circle within the X, creating the sigil of the Manifest Fears.

"My blessing is yours, my mongrel," spoke The Hound. "Behold, your new power."

Rankin, having amazingly remained on his feet for the entire ordeal, began to charge, his flesh twisting, bones stretching with the sound of warping timber. The transformation was almost as agonizing as the initiation. Rankin stretched up several feet in height, his arms growing longer, his legs contorting and becoming wolf-like, claws spouting from the ends of his fingers and toes. Thin, yet incredibly strong muscle tightened around his entire form as his skin turned grey and coated in sparse, scraggly black hair. His teeth erupted into long fangs, his face stretching forward slightly, becoming an almost canine snout. Lastly, Rankin felt his eyes literally explode, bursting into spheres of flame, though somehow, Rankin retained his ability to see and could in fact, now see deep into the darkness of the forest without difficulty.

"Your gift, fearless mongrel," growled The Hound proudly. "You may don this form whenever you wish."

Malachi was an unusual wolf by nature. For a start he was quite intelligent and quite able to speak. But what probably stood out much more was his black body, not covered in fur but some sort of substance which seemed to be trying to drip away, like tar. Where he stepped it left a smudge which soon vanished and as he walked there was a slapping sound. The only thing that seemed to make it cling to him at all was the occasional shake of his body, causing the goop to snap back around him, but should he stand still it once again seemed to start to fall away.

He was on the edge of his territory, following the scent of a wounded animal that he hadn't caught up to yet. He was hesitant to go any further in case he ran into trouble.

Fingers trailing along the bark of each tree she passed, Adlanna moved almost silently through the forest. The elf's muscles were taut despite her calm appearance. She'd smelled blood, and that meant dinner. Unlike her docile kin, she ate meat. The highlight of her days was hunting. The chase, the kill... it thrilled her.

It was something to keep her mind off her troubles, Adlanna mused as she slunk through the trees. Her fingers twitched as she heard the soft snap of a branch up ahead, ready to grab her bow in an instant if needed. Brow furrowing slightly, the elf continued to silently move forward, piercing blue eyes searching the land before her for sign of life.

Malachi was far from a silent hunter. If anything he utilized his sheer brute force and power to hound and catch prey. He had also never been taught how to be silent, so he didn't seem to care or notice when he crushed a twig and caused it to snap. The tar wolf continued on, yellow eyes gazing forward into the trees as his nose sniffed the air. He could smell something... And it wasn't just the blood of his prey. But what was it? Something he wasn't familiar with, that was for sure. He stopped on the spot and turned his head around, trying to catch sight of what he could smell.

There it was, another snap. Breath catching in anxious excitement, the elf reached up behind her to retrieve the intricately carved bow from her back. Taking an arrow with it, Adlanna fixed the arrow to her bow and lowered it to her side to continue moving quietly toward the sounds. Surely it wasn't something as small as a deer by the racket it was causing. Crouching slightly, she caught movement out of the corner of her eye and slipped behind a tree, back against the rough bark.

Malachi slipped forward a little further, still sniffing at the air with a curious snout, completely unaware that a hunter stood just out of sight. He was a big wolf by now, fully grown at half the height of a man. If it wasn't for the fact he had no fur he might have even seemed larger. But he was still quite a ferocious sight to behold, like some sort of unholy beast constantly dripping until his skeleton could be seen beneath.

Unfortunately for the elf, arrows would be fairly ineffective against him, if only because they would pass right through. His flesh was goop and his bones were rubber, meaning it was very hard to put him down just with metal.

Inhaling softly, Adlanna slowly turned to peer around the thick tree. What she saw stunned her. That was unusual, for the elf had seen many creatures in her lengthy lifetime. Yet here was this being unlike anything she'd ever laid eyes on. Breath catching, her fingers tightened around her bow. She wasn't afraid, no... she was curious. Tentative. Hidden in the shadows, the elf would be difficult to see, yet she shrunk back a little to observe for a moment more.

Hide all she wanted, her scent was a dead give away, and when left with the choice of hunting a prey or investigating something new, well... He chose to look in her direction, feet slowly trudging towards her. It was mostly out of fear he was trespassing. If he was, he wanted to get that fight over as quickly as possible and scamper back to his home. Not that he hadn't fought many wolves off before, but he liked to show restraint. Not just take all the forest. He decided it made him better than other wolves some how.

Sensing rather than seeing the large wolf-like creature begin to look in her direction, Adlanna lifted her bow slightly as she waited. The creature didn't appear to be hostile. In fact, in physical appearance it would seem to be and yet... something about it made it look rather docile. Instead of leaping out from her hiding spot, the elf chose to wait a moment longer, vibrant blue eyes searching the other being's from the shadows in which she hid.

A hot chuff of breath came from the wolf's nose, followed by a shake of his head to snap his flesh back to it before finally; he spoke. "I know you're there," came a gruff, croaking voice of someone who was extremely rare to speak. His voice was not mad or threatening, just stating the obvious really. He said no more, but planted his rump to the forest floor, sitting and staring towards the tree as he waited to see what might emerge.

At the sound of a voice, Adlanna startled. The creature could speak! Not waiting a moment more as the elf's curiosity got the better of her, she stepped out from behind the tree and into the pale light which filtered through the trees. Hands still tight on her bow, she allowed her eyes to travel along the length of the beast's form, studying it. "I thought you'd sensed me. I was correct," Adlanna finally said softly, eyes lifting now to catch the beast's.

He gave a small nod of his head as he peered at the elf, head tilting slightly as he too examined her. Was it human? It looked human. It was definitely people. However for the moment he stayed silent, staring at her, as if not realizing he should probably respond or talk. He had been cut off from communication with others for a long time, so conversation was an art long lost to him. Instead he just stared.

Feeling rather unnerved by the silent way the creature observed her, Adlanna lowered her bow to her side. Ready to be used in a moment's notice, and yet not quite so dangerous looking now. Brows furrowing slightly, the red-headed elf spoke once more, "Are you... friend or foe?" Cautiously, she took a small step closer. And though her guard appeared to be down, it was not. Muscles tense, she was prepared for the worst if needed.

Malachi's head tilted to the side in confusion with one ear twitching to try and tug his face back into place, to stop showing off his skeletal snout. "No," he answered, confident in his words, "I am a wolf." He didn't know what friend or doe was, but he was quite sure he wasn't one of those things. "Are you human?" he asked back, obviously now his turn to ask about her That was how it worked right? Outside of that he made no effort to move, body slowly sagging downwards until the boney knobs of his shoulder could be seen.

Not altogether positive yet that this creature was harmless, judging by his rather ominous appearance, Adlanna kept the bow in her hands. A slight smile tugged at the corners of her lips as the wolf spoke, however. "A wolf..." she repeated under her breath as if to store that information away in her mind. "I'm not human, no. I am an elf," Adlanna stated, watching with some sort of morbid fascination as the creature's bones were revealed.

His eyes narrowed slightly, not understanding quite what an elf was... But it was probably very different from a human so he let it go. It wasn't like he hadn't seen the occasional wolf-looking thing that didn't seem quite like a wolf. He fell into silence once more, conversation failing him for several moments before he finally decided to ask; "Is this your territory?" That was the priority. If he was trespassing he had to go.
