July took a somewhat lazy bow as Teo took ground on water's edge. "Wonderful." As Teo's clothes generated, July stretched a little, and then compared her height to the boys. It was interesting for her to have met another nymph, even if he was not so closely related to her. She would do a little more silent comparison. "Oh, I do like your wording. Do you write?" She giggled somewhat, hinting at her enjoyment of poetry and most other literature.

The nymph would follow Teo happily, smiling with a hint of sly, truly 'I have a plan' quality.. planless as she was. She walked aside Teo in quite a normal pattern. One foot in front of the other, taking moments to explore with her eyes the tremendous size of the terrain-- this land having quite a large expanse. With so much to take in, July would have missed several details of the landscape. She still tired her best to enjoy the scenery. They were headed in the direction of the city.

It wouldn't be long after the pair climbed into the car, that it was made evident that Casey was not, in fact, heading for the hospital after Farai and the others. She drove along Main Street for a short while, before turning towards the woods that rimmed the outskirts. She stayed quiet, occasionally looking Casper's way as her hands shifted their grip on the steering wheel.

Trees surrounded them on either side of the paved forest road, occasional signs providing no real hint as to where the pair were actually heading. The whole time she thought, wondering how she should talk to him, what she should talk about, why it was so hard to come up with anything that didn't sound so... parental.

She took a right at a fork in the road, the forest fading away to a wide expanse of grass that sloped towards a massive, glittering lake. Deciding to off-road it, Casey drove for the open knoll, finally putting the car into park.

"Thought we could use a change of scenery," she said softly, looking to him as the car fell to silence. She gently touched the back of his hand.

"Come on."

And she gracefully exited the vehicle.

Casper only realized quite where they were going when they began to stop, and Casey had touched his hand. Most of the car ride, he had been looking at her hands, which wrapped around the steering wheel. Most of the car ride, he had kept quiet, like a person who had expected the very worst might come if they had opened their mouth to speak.

Then she touched him on his hand, and it had almost made him jump. It brought him back to reality, in which they were at a grassland, near a lake. Although it had been reality, however, with Casper's bloody hands and what had happened beforehand, it had felt surreal.

He stepped out of the car.

"This isn't the hospital." he said, eyes overlooking the glassy water. "You're not going to like, kill me, are you? This would be an easy place to do it."

"Maybe with kindness." she replied, slipping her thumbs into the loops of her jeans. She walked with a sway to her step, absorbing the soft warmth of the sun. Her lips were pursed thoughtfully, expression oddly smooth as she lifted her eyes to the glittering blue of the water.

She remembered dreaming of that color, the color of Casper's eyes.

It took her a moment, but she took a few steps sideways, slinging her arm up and over his shoulders before dragging him into her side.

Dropping a kiss at his temple, wanted or not, she guided him more towards the water, thankful that the place was relatively deserted.

"You know I'm just glad you're all okay." she said, finally, inwardly grimacing.

He let himself be clung to and kissed, but Casper didn't look up from his shoes.

"Sky's not." he said. "Arien's not, either. I don't know if that matters anymore, though. Not like he tried to fucking kill those two and I don't know if it's my fault."

He tried to kill Sky, too. That, he remembered. He turned the blade on himself, then. So, maybe, if anyone would have died, it would have been him.

But for all intents and purposes, Arien was trying to kill his friends. He'd gotten too close to the vampire, maybe by his own fault or Arien's, and then it had ended so badly that Gabby's friend had taken a knife to the stomach.

"I don't really know what you know, either, Case. If I had a kid and he'd fucked up that bad I'd disown him, a few weeks on the job or otherwise. My mom would, anyway." he said.

When they reached the lake, he dropped to his knees beside the water and abruptly shoved his hands in.

She let her hand fall to her side, sitting down next to him and propping her chin in her hands, her elbows resting on her knees. Idly, she watched as he washed the blood off of his hands, her heart twisting painfully for a moment before she shifted her attention to the rippling water.

"I don't know, Casper." she said quietly. "Everyone messes up. Just means we're human. It doesn't mean I'm going to stop caring about you as much as I do."

She shrugged mildly. "Kinda what being a mom's about, I guess. I'm just...I guess I'm sorry, y'know? If I'm not someone you can talk to about this kind of stuff..."

She shook her head. She had no idea what she was doing. She'd interrogated mass murderers and faced down emperors and she couldn't articulate herself properly with her own ... with Casper.

"I do know you shouldn't blame yourself, though." she added. Even though she knew he probably would. "Just...learn from this, I guess? It's time we all stepped up when it comes to who we spend our time with."

"You know he was... Messing with my head, right? Nathaniel said he was a blood mage. I don't know what that means specifically, but I almost stabbed Sky in there because he told me to do it, and I couldn't help it. I thought he was an asshole at first." Casper said.

His hands scrubbed at eachother, until they were bright red and raw, and the blood that had tinted the water beforehand had long since dissipated.

"I still had say in it, though. I know I fucked up and it's my fault. You wouldn't be telling me to learn from it if I didn't." he said. "You want to be someone I can talk to, you could at least be honest about that."

"I'm not being dishonest about anything, Casper." Casey suddenly said, sounding a little afronted. "I know he was messing with your head, and I know it wasn't the greatest idea to get on the side of an unregistered vampire who also happened to be a blood mage." she shook her head.

"But, shit Casper, it's not like you did it on purpose, or anticipated the outcome, but if you want me to be angry with you than I can be. If that's the right thing to do."

She closed her eyes, rubbing her hands over her face.

"Casey," Casper started, drawing his hands out of the water.

He glanced up at her, for perhaps the first time since they'd gotten in the car. He didn't know if he wanted Casey to be mad at him. He didn't know if it was the right thing to do, either. He didn't know how normal mothers functioned, if they were supposed to be so god damn forgiving or if he was supposed to get a slap on the wrist.

"I relapsed." he said, eyes boring into hers.

He figured, though, if she wanted to be his person, then he would give her the chance.

She looked up from her hands, resting her cheek against her folded hands as her brows knit at the news. Her heart pounded, eyes locking into his gaze as she took the information and processed it.

"That was a bad idea." she muttered, taking in a deep breath and looking back towards the water.

"Is there anything I can do to help you, Casper? Make this easier?"

Casper's brow knitted, too. It suddenly occurred to him that dealing with another person's anger was far easier than dealing with their worry or disappointment. His eyes fell to the water again.

"I'd say quit your job, but that's not fair and you love that dangerous police shit more than anything else." he said. "So I don't know. Is there?"

"I want to move us back into my old apartment." she told him after a moment's thought. "Give Gabby and Farai their space, give us a chance to just relax a little bit."

She couldn't give up what she did. As much as she wanted to just get away...there was too much here, too many people relying on her.

Maybe that was the problem. "It's not much, but it's a start."

Casper heavily breathed out.

"The old apartment? It's uh... fixed, right? It look new again? After everything that happened?" he asked. "You were painting it, I guess? I saw the paint on your legs. And everything's cleaned up...?"

He remembered back to when they had to move out. The Scottish gangsters had broken in, the gang war had been going on down below, on their streets, and he had been shot two times. He was barely conscious enough to watch as a gun cocked and a man calmly took toward him, pointing a weighty pistol at his head, ready to pull the trigger. Then, a loud noise, but it wasn't the gun. He thought it was, but it hadn't been. And then, black.

And he'd been hanging on by a thread, almost ready to collapse onto the floor below.

"And Xander?" he asked, abruptly. "Are you going to put him out?"

"I'm more than happy to have him stay with us, give him and Gabby a little bit of breathing room." She said, looking him in the eye with a firm, but reassuring gaze. She looked like she was about to say more, but her cell went off, distracting her for a second as she pulled it out of her pocket.

"It's Farai," she said, sounding confused as she put the phone to her ear.

"Farai, what's up?"

Sitting up on the bank of the lake she and Casper had hunkered down by, she removed the phone from her pocket, looking a little confused.

"Farai?" she asked. "What's up?"

"Oh, thank God you picked up!" sighed Farai. "The vampire kid isn't dead! Get somewhere safe, if you can. Or come to the hospital. We all need to talk about something."

Her eyes were wide, and her face paled several shades. Trying to cover up the shock by clearing her throat, she lowered her chin into her hand and stared with wide eyes into the water.

"How do you know he isn't dead?" she demanded. "How, Farai? I told you nobody was supposed to go back to the house!"

"We didn't tell Gabby!" cried Farai, "And she went home to bloody sheets and fuckin' blood hand prints on the wall like some freaky, disturbing horror film. She's coming to the hospital now, so she's safe, but the vampire is gone."

Casper's eyes flickered over to Casey's as she talked on the phone. Their whites grew just a little bit more, by the look on Casey's face and her sudden outburst. Farai's words had been lost on him, of course, but the woman sitting next to him had said enough to assume the worst. He felt both rampant guilt, and an inkling of relief.

"Arien?" he pried. "You're talking about Arien, aren't you?"

"Yes," she told him immediately. "Apparently, unless someone took the body. Gabby made the unfortunate discovery. Farai," she said, directing her attention to the phone. "Farai, she's going to be okay. Don't panic on me, alright? Arien was in no condition to do much of anything even if he did manage to drag himself out the window. Just make sure she sticks with you. She needs to stop wandering around on her own."

She was worse than Casper.

"I'm staying with Cas, for now. We'll figure things out shortly. Text me when she gets there?"

"A-alright. I'll look after everyone here. I'll keep them safe." said Farai, stressed to all hell. "Tell Casper I said hi."

And with that, they hung up.

"Oh, jesus."

Casper lowered his head into damp palms.

Arien's arm had burned off. The flesh had seared right off his skin, so dry and hot that it could be peeled with a pinch. He would have been in unimaginable pain.

And he was alive. Wherever he was, he was far enough to where Gabby hadn't seen him. He had made it out the window after surviving the hell he'd put the others through.

"Casey..."

"You're not going back to the Detente until I know for damned sure that he's locked up or dead, Casper." Casey cut in, looking towards him before standing to her feet.

"He won't be the first to try something like this, Casper. You're my son. By default the affiliation is enough to put your life at risk. So until I can know for sure that you're not jeopardized by simply walking down the sidewalk, you're not going back to the Detente. I'll be letting Casren know of the circumstances. Arien needs to be found."

Her tone suggested no argument.

Casper looked up at Casey, his brow knitting at first.

"...Okay." he said, heart hudding hard against his chest. He didn't contest. He didn't want to. The simple fact alone that Casey had cared enough to take some sort of action, or to even say what she had said, had endeared him. It aggravated him just a little bit more, but all the same.

He climbed to his feet as well.

"I can leave the house, right? Sidewalks aren't off-limits? I don't have to wear one of those ankle-bracelets or get a tracking chip in my phone?"

She turned, taking his shoulders with her hands and gripping him firmly, staring into his eyes with as much emphasis as she knew how to deliver.

"I'd like to know where you're going, and when you plan on being back." she said with earnest. "The last thing I'd expect you to do is hole up and wait for the danger to pass. That's just not who you are." Her smile, then, was twinged with a little irony.

He was a lot like her, in that.

"Which brings me to another point. You'd mentioned Xander. I wanted to leave that up to you. We can take him in or not. I'd be happy with whatever you ended up deciding."

She'd still not let him go, but the grip was far less tenacious.

He lifted his hands and rested them on her wrists. At the very least, the younger boy smirked, tense as the situation was.

"Okay. We'll have to invest in a whiteboard." he said, simply.

Then, Xander was mentioned.

"And... Yeah." Casper said. "I don't want to leave him out. I picked him up. I didn't expect him to be Gabby's brother, but..."

He gave a soft shrug. "He's okay. He gets pissed, but he's alright. I get pissed too, and I'm pretty alright." Then, he nodded upward, to the car that rested on the top of the hill. "We going to get back?"

"Unfortunately." she replied, pulling him into a hug.

"I love you, Casper." she said, her eyes screwing shut as she embraced him. "I need you to remember that. It's never going to change, as annoying as that can be. You understand?"

"...I know, Casey." he said. At first, he hesitated to bring his arms up and return the hold, but surely enough, he had pressed his hands against her back and laid his head on her shoulder before she pulled back. Like always.

He pulled back, and headed up the hill. All the while, he walked by her.

When they had gotten to the car, he opened his mouth to say something, but closed it again.

It was for later.

Cole's figure would be seen heading towards Tara, his armor and sword missing, a rare sight for him since he was usually armed and prepared. Heading over, he'd give her a smile, and tilting his head. "So, long time no see..heh...sorry for being gone for so long." Raising an eyebrow, he'd turn his head towards her. "Anything big happen lately? Like..anything I should be worried about? Or is everything as it should be?"

Tara got up and gave him a hug. "I missed you" She said with a smile. "Um well those Aschen guys and the Taiou something or other are at war over Terra." She said. "There's a big battle up there." She said pointing to the sky." She sat down on the ground and motioned for him to join her.
