"Fire-heads don't know the forest like I do!"

a character in “The Mysterious Bird-Woman”, as played by ZacharyTC

Description

Description

Having lived in a forest most of his life, his body could be considered athletic. Any blemishes Zechariah had on his almost tan skin were replaced with three scars: one across his left eye (both of which are greenish-blue), another on his right cheek, and the third just below his chin. That third scar is not visible due to his mostly well-groomed beard. His mustache is slightly less well-kept as his beard, which is typical for someone who makes do with a knife instead of scissors. His dark-blonde hair reaches to his shoulders unevenly for the same reason he does not have a completely well-groomed beard and mustache. Despite his muscular build, Zechariah maintains a slim figure, capable of agile manuevers. He almost always wears leather or fur; it is the material he has most readily available for his clothing, usually a tunic and pants, both with the belts, pockets, and eveything else to hold his hunting gear.

Personality

Zechariah can be rough around the edges, though that is primarily because of his somewhat isolated lifestyle. His life is defined by the hunt and whatever edible plants he can gather. Anything that disrupts the natural balance in Eagle Forest does not escape his notice; it is a hunter's instinct. He will often refer to blacksmiths and warriors as "fire-heads" due to the fact they heavily rely on forges, the smoke and fire from which can be hazardous to wildlife or people's health. Despite his notorious reputation for appearing cold or tough, he has a caring heart, inside. He just does not want to admit it. Anyone who knows him long enough will eventually see hints at his more sensitive side, though he will still try to hide it. Perhaps another reason for this is hunters cannot let their emotions dictate their actions, since one move could mean the difference between a meal and an empty stomach. Whatever can be found in the forest, Zechariah will use, even when the locals who hunt for sport do not want certain spoils from their kills. Whatever he cannot eat himself, he will trade, in town, for money and items he sees a practical use for.

Equipment

Zechariah does not find any practical use for the heavy weapons knights, warriors, and crusaders equip. Instead, he prefers the speed and mobility his bow, arrows, and knives afford him. He never possesses anything more than he can carry on his back or keep in his tent, which can shelter two people at a time, not including the space his gear and food take up. Whatever the size of the animal, he can create a trap for. The young hunter will sometimes take his fishing spear with him to one of the rivers as a break from tracking land creatures.

History

Not much is known about Zechariah other than his lifestyle in Eagle Forest and how he ended up there. He did not always live the life of a hunter. At one time, he was the son of two knights, in a land not part of Carshuimg until the crusades reached it.

His parents saw corruption among the nobility of the time and spoke against it, at the cost of their lives. The night of their assassination drove Zechariah to grab his hunting gear and sister, Hannah, before making a dash for Falcon Forest, the hunting area for knights. The man hired to kill off the family pursued the preteen siblings for seven years, during which time a rebellion rose in response to the outrage. Once Carshuimg's crusades reached Falcon Forest, five years after the assassination, the stalemate between the nobility and the rebellion broke. One by one, the armies of the nobles fell. It was at the end of the seventh year that the assassin gave up the chase; he was not willing to lose a high-paying client. This provided Zechariah the opportunity he waited for. By that time, the rebellion decided to become citizens of Crushuimg once the war was over. The young hunter knew if Crushuimg won, he and his sister would not have to worry about anyone trying to kill them.

For the next three months, Zechariah tracked down the assassin until they reached the last stronghold of the war. It was there, when the hired murderer attempted to kill the Crushuimg captain in charge of the siege, that the hunter shot down him down. That one action saved both the captain and the family. When the king offered knighthood under the Crushuimg banner as a reward, Zechariah chose instead to request residence in another forest while Hannah be given a safe home nearby it. He considered Eagle Forest his home, since then. That forest actually resides two miles away from the Crushuimg capital, which the hunter reaches via a giant, brown eagle named Deborah, his pride and joy that he tamed while adapting to the area as a teenager.

So begins...

"Big Brother, are you sure you'll be okay?" Hannah always worried about Zechariah.

The hunter simply shrugged and said, "Hey, I live in that forest, have been living in it for years, now. I'll be fine."

Three days later...

Zechariah and his pet Giant Eagle, Deborah, were now in the northern section of Eagle Forest, where most of the local supernatural individuals were reportedly sighted. Since most birds perch on trees, and this bird-woman stuck to the ground half the time (supposedly), she could not be that hard to track. Finally, he found a trail. "These are definitely not the tracks of a pure bird. The prints are bird-like, yet the steps are human. We must be close, Deborah."

Following the trail, he also found skeletons, all with torn explorers' uniforms. "I guess she's a cannibal. Time to bring out the bow, just in case."

He kept the bow to his side as he held it, an arrow in his other hand. He was always cautious when it came to survival, unless he had to be bold, that is. Where the trail ended, he saw tall trees. "Well, looks like she can fly, too. She may come back to this spot, judging from the number of tracks in different directions."

Shanna wailed from above in the tree line, her wailing echoing throughout the forest, it threw her voice, making her sound as if you was near you or afar in every which direction. Other than that as it seemed to moan on like a cry of sorts from the departed scraping and scratching could be heard from a certain tree, tall and thick with vines tightly curled around it, almost suffocating it and the green thick moss with mushrooms grew up it.... The tree was marked with deep clawing from countless ventures up and down it... Old blood marked into them slightly.

Suddenly from above fell a silver pendent with a ruby in the centre of it, landing just a few steps from Zecharich's feet and a gasp followed, russling of leaves came next as did a woosh of wind as a strange being, pale rose ivory skin, long void black hair... Her ears pointed with black feathers, her nose slightly pointed, her hands brandished black claws that were close to her unclothed chest as she looked down at the pendant. Her legs were that of a bird, a raven, forearms and her spinal cord decorated in feathers. Her eyes like burning suns...

She was the bird woman... Body of a woman from head to groin but her legs, arms and feet like that of a black bird, a raven... She slowly bent her form down, picking up the trinket, slinging it over her head as a necklace before she finally took notice of the man and the bird... She turned to them, frowning, shooting warning snarls at their direction. She from her appearance was underweight, malnourished and very territorial it seems as she stretched her arms out, claws extending, making herself look bigger... She was tall, taller than the average female human standing at 6'0 foot and with her spreading her wing like arms and standing up straight she added an inch to her height as she continued to snarl, showing off her fangs.

Zechariah coolly made ready to shoot. He did not even notice the pendent or ruby, yet he heard the gasp. Looking up, h could barely catch a glimpse of the bird woman falling to the ground, feet first. His head tilted to the side in confusion. Is that her? She doesn't seem menacing... It was when she spotted the two that he realized this could wind up a fight for his life. Regardless of how big she appeared with her arms stretched out, he had the bow and arrows, and the skill to use them. He slowly pulled the arrow towards him as he took aim for the head, ready to shoot if necessary. "You may not be able to understand me, missy, but methinks you're at a disadvantage, here. I'm the one with the bow and arrow. I don't want to hurt you, but I will if you make one wrong move."

A closer examination in his shooting stance indicated she was malnourished. He thought out loud, "How has she kept from collapsing with how underweight she is?" He was unaware she could hear that query.

Meanwhile, Deborah stretched out her own wings and made her eagle screech to appear as menacing as possible. She was not one to let her "relatives" be harmed. It was a common bond between pet and master.

Shanna snarled more but as the man spoke, she tilted her head, indeed she understood but as she heard the outward thought she outright frowned at the man once more but in hearing the bird she looked at it directly in the eye and slowly she put her arms down as she looked at it, her eyes were fierce but her facial expression was much of kinship as she looked at the bird for another moment before turning her glowing gaze on the man. ''What do you want mortal? Little did I know mortals were so able to speak of words and not daggers or magic. You presence here is unnerving... but thank your companion... and your willingness not to harm me... it is a fair trade I believe.'' She walked up right in front of the man, her height matching his own. She smelt like dew and flowers. ''You are muscle. How can you walk around without toppling over?'' She walked away, her talons digging into the earth and she started to slowly climb up the tree again, her nakedness was shown and she didn't seem to think it was unnatural but then again... forest life does that to you.

Zechariah was so confused, at this point. Mortal? Humans merely speaking of daggers and magic? And, on top of that, toppling over from his somewhat muscular build? As if things were not confusing enough, the bird woman honestly smelled aromatic instead of the typical bird smell. He did not bother looking in her direction as she climbed up. He did speak, however. "I just wanted to see if talks of a bird-woman were true. I've lived in this forest for years, and never encountered anything supernatural. Plus, my sister is enthusiastic about supernatural topics, so that makes double the reason. Not every 'mortal', as you put it, is violent and senseless. Why'd you even call me that, anyway? You're capable of dying, yourself, right?"

Deborah decided to tend to her feathers, since the crisis was averted. She figured she was not needed, at the moment. Besides, it was not as if she and Zechariah were hunting or anything like that.

Shanna perched up on the branch, pulling her hair over her shoulder than hung down long enough for it to drape down a little past the branch itself and she started to brush it with her claws. The centre of her hair line was feathered like a crown that rose up when threatened and so forth.

Her talons harshly stabbing into the branch's bark, causing free sap to drip down from it. She looked down at the man with her deep orange red glowing eyes as she brushed her long hair, feathers in between the hair and the back of her arms ruffled with raven black feathers also along with her thighs and bird like feet. From her groin and up was pretty human apart from the bird like features and she scoffed. ''Well you have seen she... Your curiosity has been sated now leave me.'' She then raised a brow then smiled very much amused by the man's question. ''I have the tendency to not stay dead for long, Mortal... Why do you wonder such things mm?''

Zechariah, still not looking at the bird woman, he became agitated at her speech. "Will you cut the 'Mortal' gig out, already!? It makes you sound conceited! Call me, "Zechariah"! Anyway, to answer your question, I'm a hunter whom has lived in this forest for a long time. If I don't know everything about it, how can I stop some damn poachers who get it in their heads that they can just wipe out one population or another here and get away with it? Somebody has to protect this forest's wildlife from poachers, so it might as well be me."

Deborah stopped tending to her feathers for a moment before nodding and making a sound that meant, Zechariah may not be the best person at social matters, but he is serious about maintaining balance in this forest.

Shanna chuckled at the man's outburst as she continued to tend to her hair she shook her head lightly making her crown like feathers ruffle before she looked down at the man. ''Okay, Zechariah. I was not being boastful, it is simply a title I see you all as, as old as I am it is all I see. Names bestowed to me often become ash in jars when their life expires. Don't be offended, I just don't use names so a personal connection can't be made.''

Shanna looked at Deborah with a grin as she continued to brush her hair. ''You don't say, perhaps a good girlfriend is all he needs.'' She chuckled at this.
