The first thing that you might notice about Erin is the mass of curls atop her head. She typically wears this most distinguishing feature down and only pulls it back when she's competing. She isn't particularly tall or short, but she is well-toned from being so active and not bothered if you're intimidated by it. She typically wears casual denims and plain tees when not in track-wear.
A quick Google search, should her classmates be so inclined, might reveal a bit more. Erin Shields broke the national record for 5000m on an outdoor track in her age group when she was in seventh grade, beating out the favourite competitor, five years her senior, for a high school state meet. Despite her commitment to sport, she's still the typical teenager who attends parties, occasionally drinks too much and does stupid things - hence the rumour still lurking that she kissed a girl at one of the graduating seniors' parties last summer. Erin has neither confirmed or denied this.

She doesn't really care too much for school and homework, as long as it means she can maintain the GPA be able to compete next season, she doesn't mind what her grades are. School is more of a break for her than her occupation. Outside of competitions and sports, she's a very laidback girl, who doesn't mind mess or chaos - as long as it doesn't affect her training schedule or next season's competitions. She is, however, very competitive and not an entirely graceful loser either - the kind of competitor that asks for another round to prove themselves every time they lose. Erin is extremely stubborn and willful and often butts heads with the staff at Shermer over her disregard for academics and prioritizing school over sport. The athlete doesn't consider herself very smart or particularly arty, and does occasionally struggle with keeping her GPA above the minimum requirement threshold for remaining in an extracurricular. Especially for anything math related.
Erin mostly thinks of her life in terms of events that involved running. She was born on June 12th to a minor league baseball player father and an ex-high-school-track-star mother but won her first race at six at a local sports day. Classing herself as a long distance runner, she competed in longer and longer races as she grew, gaining most success from the State Championship Race when she was 13 and placed in first against the top high school seniors of Illinois and setting a US record for her age group. She has attended other long distance running races and meets since, but was unable to repeat the feat after her initial success, typically placing somewhere in the top twenty but never achieving that level of success again.
At Shermer High, she is part of the school's track and field team and participates in majority of the events, coming in third last year in the women's heptathlon in the national meet and beating her personal best. Despite her body's preference for a change to a different event, like heptathlon, she still stubbornly clings on to her early success as a long distance runner. Her parents are trying to convince her to drop long distance races in favor of working harder at her skills in the events for heptathlon, as are her coaches. Apart from being an active member of track and field, she's also vaguely known in school for the time she may or not have kissed a girl at Freddie Costello's last summer - if that rumour's still flying around. The only thing she's said in response to that is that she was too drunk to remember what happened. Erin is pansexual although she hasn't come out to anyone yet, preferring to let things lie as they are and focus on her competitions.
Erin ends up in Saturday Detention because of a cumulative number of things mostly involving repeated late attendances and being caught checking her phone and sneaking off to the toilets to check her phone multiple times a day, and not taking school seriously enough.
