Dr. Richard Weiss

"There are those who would question the need for doctors in this modern world. To them, I say this: batteries die, equipment fails--but a doctor? He will keep on fighting for your life, with cloth rags and stones if need be."

Description

Richard Weiss is a 57 year old human doctor who stands at just shy of 6 feet tall. He is thin and pale, almost to the point of frailty, and his brown hair is heavily streaked with the gray of age. He was born on a space station, though he can't (and even if could, wouldn't want to) recall precisely which one it was. He first began practicing medicine a decade and a half after his birth, when he received first aid instruction from his father. Instruction he would later put to good use when a reactor malfunction caused a massive explosion on the station. Weiss was the first on the scene, drawn by the noise, and saved the lives of three men who had been caught in the blast. From that moment on, Weiss's path was set. He has spent the past few years wandering from place to place, working on humanitarian initiatives and striving to ameliorate the conditions of those less fortunate than himself.

Over the years he has gained valuable experience in working with humans. While he isn't in any way inept with other species, the radically different physiology of the wide variety of life in the universe renders him less than perfect at working on most non-human life. He always likes to say that even a veterinarian only needs to understand one particular flavor of life, to be a doctor these days requires a working understanding of a literal infinity of radically different biologies based on dozens of different chemistries. . . it is much simpler to stick to humans.

Weiss has a love of the vintage, and he has quite the collection of old style items and a penchant for actually using them. Even his clothes are made of natural fibers and emulate now ancient style. He usually just wears a white lab coat though.

Personality

Dr. Richard Weiss has spent decades honing his skills as a physician. He's good, and he knows it. This results in him coming off as arrogant and pedantic at best, confrontational at worst. All the same, he is actually a very caring person who's only real crime is lacking social finesse. He deeply cares for his patients, and is greatly affected by their loss should they perish under his care. He is confident in himself, but he is also a loner and finds it difficult to trust others with responsibility.

Equipment

Weiss always carries a pocket trauma kit in his back pocket, including a variety of low tech items such as gauze, decompression needles, tourniquets, and medical tape. That is not, of course, to say that he is unskilled with more modern medical techniques. On the contrary, he owns and uses a wide range of medical tools ranging from dermal regenerators to medical scanners. It is just that he likes to keep in practice with the techniques that will always work. Batteries die, equipment fails. It is best not to rely completely on advanced technology.

It would be a bit of an understatement to say that Weiss walked into the room. While the action itself did quite resemble the act of walking, the force behind it was far too great to have been a mere walk, but at the same time the resolve was not quite that of a march or a strut. It was what could be called, perhaps, a confident stride. A happy medium between the scornful pride of a march, and the utter carelessness of a walk.

His eyes immediately scanned the room, taking in the few lonely forms at the bar, and the mass of beings that had accumulated around a small group of tables. His destination, it seemed, was obvious. Setting his sights on the mass, he began to move towards it, albeit with a slight hesitation working its way into his stride. To be completely honest, Weiss was not sure if this was what he really wanted. Of course, it couldn't be worse than what he had at the moment. It had been ten years since the expiration of his commission with the last ship he had served on. What was it again, Shiva, Shinra. . . . Not that it mattered much, the name. What did matter was that since that time he had been wandering without purpose, satisfied to simply move from place to place selling his services to those who could afford them, and giving them away for free to those who couldn't. Humanity was scattered and broken, and any little bit he could do to help was worth it, or at least it had seemed that way at the time.

These days, his life felt so unfulfilling, and this mission stood the possibility of changing all of that. He couldn't pass it up, second thoughts be damned!

By now he was very close to the group, and seeing that Captain Oris was currently occupied, he glanced around for a place to bide his time. A young woman with striking red hair sitting alone nearby caught his eye, and he slid into a chair at the otherwise empty table. "Hello," he said, looking into her eyes, "I'm Doctor Weiss."

"Hello, I'm Dr. Weiss." The voice came abruptly, it's bold confidence scaring Tess a bit. She glanced up and saw a huge man, who quite honestly seemed intimidating, except for the kind look in his eyes. She decided on a heartbeat to trust him, even though her brain was screaming at her for being so easily trusting "The name's Tess." She took another swig of alcohol before offering up her hand as a sign of acquaintanceship, for better or for worse.

“It truly is a pleasure to make your acquaintance Miss Tess.” Weiss took her hand, a bit taken aback by the apparent frailty of it. As he shook it though, he felt a strength beyond all appearances, hidden just beneath the surface. “Am I correct in assuming that you are here regarding the upcoming expedition as well?”

He wasn’t sure why, but something in this young woman reminded Weiss of himself, in a strange and convoluted way. He decided on the spot that he quite liked her. Not that this was unusual, snap judgments were something that Weiss was in the habit of making. Only time would tell if the judgment was correct, but in this case Weiss found himself secretly hoping that it would be.

Inqueta was watching everyone as they came in for their interviews. She watched the failures, and felt Captain Oris's annoyance and disappointment. She understood that this had to have been extremely frustrating. She opened up her ears to listen to the conversations between Oris and Colin. It wasn't that she didn't like Colin, but she was already wary of him. He was a metamorphite, and undoubtedly, he would try to touch her, to be able to mimic her capabilities. She also listened to the conversations Oris had with everyone that was interviewed. A man named Eddie was to be their pilot. Captain Oris seemed to liked him well enough, and his files looked good. Inque nodded, satisfied with who was going to be flying the ship. Next came the cook. She was a beautiful girl with a look of determination on her face. Her red hair matched her gorgeous rosey skin. The food Minn had prepared looked delicious, and Inque's mouth watered enviously as she watched Oris eat them. The girl was a Shar, and seemed pretty harmless. The blue girl's suspicions of Colin proved to be right when he shook the cute girl's hand. His skin turned the same shade of red as hers was when he turned into a Shar. Inqueta watched him walk back over to the Captain.

A Tourain stood by the captain, and no sooner than Inque saw him, Colin had changed into his own form of one. She didn't have to open her ears more to listen to him speak. In fact, she closed a few of the micro-slits, because his voice was booming. Captain Oris seemed impressed with him, so Inqueta didn't feel the need to pay attention anymore. She directed her focus to a red-headed girl and a man who had just introduced himself as Dr. Weiss. She assumed he was there for the position of doctor, but she wasn't sure if the girl was there to apply or not. She assumed, once again, that she was, just because the bar was pretty much empty of anyone else. She made a small clicking noise with her tongue and slid from the booth she had been hiding in. She silently made her way up to the Captain's table, knowing no one could hear her. If they weren't too engaged with the Tourain, named Val Salah As Tallan, they might have seen her, considering she made her skin blue as she walked over there. She intended to stay a few steps away, close enough to make her presence known, but far enough to give them space and not be rude, interrupting Val's interview. She practiced what she would say in her head.

"Alright everybody. We just need a doctor and an engineer and we're all set."

Weiss was shaken from his conversation by a sharp female voice. It yanked him back into the present moment and reminded him why he had come to the bar in the first place. He quickly apologized to his new friend and stood up, turning to face the source of the call. He quickly strode across the bar to the Captain held out his hand. "Captain Oris, I apologize for the delay. I am Dr. Richard Weiss, here to apply for the position of ship's physician."

The Captain was not what the doctor had expect, not in the least. Even before the handshake, even before the first words of conversation passed between them, he was shaken. Shaken by her stunning appearance. . . her youth. Weiss had been around for a while, and it was very rare for an individual this young, female or otherwise, to be in a position of command.

Though it took some force of will, Weiss decided not to pass judgement on his, hopefully, soon to be captain on account of her age. He would reserve judgement until he could fully gauge her command ability by its own merits.

Reggie shook hands with the doctor, his body lurching to the side from his old age. Dr. Richard Weiss. She ran the name through her head several times, trying to figure out where she had heard it from.

"Dr. Weiss, I've heard of you." She said as she moved to sit back down in her seat. "You've been a doctor for a long time, I know that." She smiled up at him. She had heard of the great doctor Weiss, who at a young age save three people's lives when there was a reactor malfunction on the space station he was living on.

Although, she knew of him more as a human doctor as opposed to an alien doctor, which Reggie could understand. It was easier to stick with what you know. But their were books and documents on how to properly treat all the alien life forms that would be on the Nightwing.

"So, tell me a little about yourself." Reggie said smiling.

Colin grumbled. Reg had asked him to entertain her... but he elected to ignore her. He had that priveledge. He grinned. First mate priveledges were great. So far they almost had a full crew. Just a few more interviews to go and he could hit the hay. He was about to say something to Reggie, but was interruped by a new face. A doctor. Colin smiled and ducked out of the way. This was her show, he could go bother someone else.

He changed from his reptillian appearance. I wasnt too pleasent for others to see, and he much prefered his human body. He grabbed a seat at the bar and ordered an alcoholic beverage. The bar keep gracefully obliged Colins thirst with a shot. Colin smiled an raised his glass to the man. He downd the small glass and placed it on the table. He smiled and dropped his head onto the bar. He was so tired.

"Is that all youve got?" came a sweet voice from the stool next to him. He raised an eyebrow and turned his head slowly. A beautiful human woman sat beside him with her own shot. She took it and placed it on the bar. He smiled. She did the same. "Lightweight."

Colin instantly perked up. No one questioned his drinking ability. No one! He ordered another shot for each of them. He eyed her as they took their shots. "not bad."

She held out a hand. "Juliet." she offered. he smiled and took her hand. "Colin." She left her seat and released his hand. "Good to meet you Colin, thanks for the drink." she left the bar, giving one last wave to him.

He chuckled and dropped to the counter. "I think I'm in love" he joked.

Weiss was taken about by this woman's apparent knowledge of him. Though humanity was small, and he was considered a hero in many places, it was a surprise to him that his name had traveled so far.He laughed for a few moments, in hope of disguising any evidence of his surprise, before drawing breath to respond, "Well Captain, we could be here a while in that case, so I'll give you the highlights. I'm a physician, have been for about half a century now, and have served aboard a number of human spacecraft before. Of late I've been involved largely in humanitarian work, moving from place to place, but that lifestyle is fast getting boring. I may be old, but a little excitement never hurts. When I heard of this position, I immediately decided to go for it as a result, and here I am now."

It wasn't even highlights, to be honest, but Weiss couldn't think of any easy way to sum up decades of medical exploits into a single statement, so he contented himself to give up a short statement on his life in general. As he spoke, he stared deeply into Captain Oris's eyes, grasping for some sign of weakness or strength that would assist him in making up his mind about her, but at the moment no evidence was forthcoming.

Reggie stared into Weiss's eyes, knowing full well that he was trying to read her. Someone at his age, no doubt, had worked under many a great captains. But probably never one as young as she. It was something she had been used to, ever since she joined the IDA, she had been treated unequal, compared to her male counterparts. She had pushed through the persecution she had been put through, and became their top graduate.

She listened to Dr. Weiss give the highlights of himself. He was definitely trained in the human medical profession, but she couldn't help but be concerned about the other alien races. She did not doubt Dr. Weiss's skills, however, and knew this man would perform to his utmost ability for everyone on this crew. She gave a smirk, when he mentioned the need for excitement.

He reminded her of her great grandfather. That man was 114 and he still flew across the galaxy looking for adventure. She admired him, and she couldn't help but feel admiration for the old doctor.

"Well, Dr. Weiss." She said standing. "Welcome to the Nightwing." She held her hand out for him to shake.

"Well Saein, welcome to the Nightwing." Reggie smiled. "Yes, the cook is the one with the spoon." She laughed. "Her name is Minn, go ahead and introduce yourself."

Glancing around the bar, Reggie asked for another drink. This time a harder alcohol, one that hopefully help her grouchy mood. She was still pissed at Val for completely bailing. Who did he think he was? God damn freeloader.

Reggie pounded down the drink and glanced around the bar, counting heads. They were missing one other person. The doctor. She sighed and climbed up the stairs, quickly finding the room that had to be his. She knocked twice, waiting for a response. She knocked again calling his name.

Nothing.

She felt panic course through her spine. What if something happened to him? Granted he could just be in the shower, but she couldn't shake her panicked feeling. She twisted the knob and pushed open the door.

"Doc?"

Colin snorted in the new doctors direction. He shook his head violently, causing his mane to flow around. He assumed he ould have to give these two a ride back to the bar so he preferred to not change back, but he figured he'd better meet the dotor as a person, and not an animal.

A few nerve twisting and spine tingling sounds later and he was back in human form. He stepped forward to where the two of them were. He stopped next to Reg and crossed his arms, winking at the doctor with a smile. "Got a problem with Blaze?" he asked. He didt like when people bad talked his forms. It was a bit insulting. He knew good ol doc didnt say anything, but the look of confusion was enough to make Colin chuckle.

Before Arc even got the chance to respond, they were called to the ship. Finally! His excitement was uncontained! It was leaking out of him! It was... well, he wasn't anymore 'visibly' excited then the rest. However, inside, he was cheering. They were finally getting ready to go! He followed Regina as they were led to the shuttle and then flown to the actual ship.

After the cramped shuttle ride up to the Nightwing, Eddie found himself giving second-glances to all the features of the ship he had already seen before. He wasn't as curious as the others, given the fact he knew what all this was and had seen the ship the day before, but he did admire the actual beauty of the ship as he walked.

As Reggie informed them of the AI, Eddie found himself not taking advantage of the thing, obviously because he wasn't completely comfortable with it. Then again, he didn't really need it, he did actually pay attention during the tour. Eddie caught himself before he got too far away from the others and smiled. "I would suggest nobody leaves without knowing where they are going, unless you want to wander around for a while," he warned jokingly.

Alexander

Alex turned when Saein called for him. The drugs were definitely in affect. Minn was already concerned, her green eyes locking onto his. "Relax Minn," He said kindly, a small laugh in his words. "Everything is fine. It's just a side effect."

He stepped over to Saein's bed and immediately checked her pulse. Everything was working fine, her body was still functioning properly. He jotted a few things down on his clipboard as he continued checking through vital signs. He took a vial full of blood and set it down in a machine to be processed. He pressed his stethoscope to her stomach, her back, and her chest, to get clear sounds of her heart.

Again, he jotted down his findings. Alex listened to Minn and Saein talk; always a silent doctor. Preferring to do his tests, and let the patient remain comfortable. Speaking with friends always calmed patients, and helped to get more accurate tests. The effects of the drugs he had given Saein were definitely working.

"But of course the best view of all is already on the sh-"

Alex felt his pen slip from his hand as he looked from Saein to Minn. Saein's face was turning redder than he had ever seen and, looking over at Eddie, Alex noticed the pilot had caught on to what Saein was saying earlier. Finally, his eyes locked on Minn, whose expression was still completely oblivious to what Saein had just said. Missing the implications in her words.

Alex coughed to get everyone's focus off of Saein's words, but she was already covering up. "Damnit, I'm high, aren't I? Ooh boy. What was the way humans put it? In vino veritas?"

Alex laughed outwardly. Surprised to hear an alien race use such a dead language. A human one at that. "In wine there is truth." Alex said translating the Latin phrase.

"Round, round with the glass, boys as fast as you can,
Since he who don't drink cannot be a true man.
For if truth is in wine, then 'tis all but a whim
To think a man's true when the wine's not in him.
Drink, drink then, and hold it a maxim divine
That there's virtue in truth, and there's truth in good wine."

Alex spoke casually as he continued to take the last few tests on Saein. When he was finished he checked off the last thing and smiled down at the mechanic as he finished the last line in the poem. "Funny that a Firni would know a Latin phrase." He chuckled again. "Everything is fine. Once I get the blood test results back, I'll know for sure that there's nothing internal wrong. Once the drugs wear off, you'll be free to go."

He smiled again and hooked his clipboard to Saein's bed. He was startled to find the android, Dlew, had joined them in the infirmary. He waved hello and then plopped down at his desk waiting for the results.

Regina

Reggie grabbed her tool kit from the hangar and spent a good five minutes digging through the spare part closet trying to find the right piece. Sure enough, it happened to buries underneath every other piece of spare part that she had gathered over the years.

Sighing with victory, the captain made her way to the infirmary. Hopefully, Dlew hadn't collapsed and broken by now. He should be fine. The gear was still working inside his body, Dlew would just never be properly fixed until they fixed it. And the longer they put it off, the more complications could occur. That damn gear could completely destroy the others gears if it dislodged itself anymore.

When Reggie arrived in the infirmary, she was surprised to find several people already there. Minn and Eddie were sitting next to Saein in one of the beds. "What happened?" Reggie asked stepping up to the bed.

"Saein just over estimated," Alex responded from behind her. She spun to see him looking over a few papers by his desk. "She'll be back up and running in an hour tops. No worries."

Reggie shook her head with a smile. "I can't leave you guys alone for five minutes without someone ending up in the infirmary." She stepped away from the bed to find Dlew sitting on one of the beds in the corner.

"How are you feeling?" She asked. "Do you feel any discomfort?"

She was already digging through her tool kit to find the item she needed. When she found it, she pulled it out. A small square object that would be inserted into a slot behind Dlew's ear. It was basically a system override. It shut down any android's functions and put them into a sort of anesthetic sleep. Reggie nodded as she listened to Dlew's reply to her questions immediately checked to make sure he had the proper docking that she needed. He did.

"Alright Dlew, this won't take long at all." She said to him with a smile. "No worries."

She slowly inserted the override and immediately Dlew shut down. His body slumped forward and Reggie easily caught him. She pushed him back onto the bed and rolled him over so she could get a clear view of his back. She pulled open the door like she did when she was giving him a check up and immediately dug her way through to the dislodged gear.

She carefully removed it, her hands already covered in grease and sticky materials, and chucked into a small bin that was meant for bodily organs. Technically that gear was an organ, just not the usual slimy, slippery ones.

It took Reggie maybe ten minutes to get the new gear properly placed in Dlew's back. It kept getting stuck on other gears and parts. But, finally, she managed to screw it in properly and close the backing. She moved to wipe her hands on her pants, but decided against it.

Although the black substance wouldn't show up on her black pants, she figured a proper washing would be a better idea. She wiped them clean, as best she could, before rolling Dlew back over and removing the override chip.

She chucked it back into her tool kit and stepped over to the sink to clean her hands. It would be a while before Dlew woke up, a good five minutes or so depending on how long it took his systems to reboot.
