Eddie Ackers

"Is it really that hard to understand? I mean, Imagine a turd spinning around in a toilet; THAT'S what we're going to look like if I make even one mistake."

a character in “The Nightwing's Voyage”, as played by FamishedPants

Description

Image

Eddie can usually be seen wearing a black jacket with a black undershirt beneath it and jeans for his lower half. All of which appear to be just his size. It is rare to see him wear anything else unless he is forced to, so people who know him usually don't expect much else.

The man's hair used to be dirty blonde, but has darkened to a brown, possibly from being dyed. He is gifted with sky blue eyes and a good complexion. He looks bigger than one would expect a pilot to be, with some definition in his arms and a six-pack hiding underneath his shirt. However, to say he is 'ripped' would be a lie, and you wouldn't know he's anything but 'big-boned' unless he's wearing a tight shirt or lacking one at all. He stands at a height of about 5'11" and weighs around 175 lbs due to muscle weight, giving him an intimidating appearance only to weaker people.

Personality

Sarcastic, loyal and kind are what most would use to describe Eddie. While in organized militaries, some dislike his sarcasm, they can't deny his piloting prowress. He occasionally lets you know that he is in fact one of the best pilots in possibly the universe...and at a younger age too. He's never one to be serious unless the situation demands it, such as the ship he's piloting being shot at or something of that importance, and can usually be expected to joke.

As a favor for most of the people he's talked to with neigh piloting slang experience, he dulls down his speech. What was once a elaborate speech on how the engines have lost their ability to draw in light and use it to propel them forward, is now "Our engines are disabled." So in other words, he speaks English.

Although he is usually seen cracking a joke and overall just being funny, he is known to be concerned and caring. Whether it is because some alien kid just lost their family due to friendly fire or because of a species treatment of its own due to something small like being born (think of Shariva's attitude towards females, which is one of his softer spots)

He dislikes racism, cowardice and threats towards those he deems as friends or crewmembers and won't hesitate to back them up, even if they don't have the best of dispositions towards each other. This holds especially true to female crew members or ones who don't seem to be able to defend themselves. Eddie can be known to act chilvarous and does NOT allow harmful and aggressive actions towards his crew, females and especially his female crewmembers go without punishment. Also happens to be on of the few times you can see him in an angry demeanor.

If you want to get on his good side, you can either accept his sense of humor and try to get him to laugh genuinely, make good food for him (IDA didn't have the best rations...), or you can TRY to beat him in a game. He is a gamer when he isn't piloting a ship or working out. Overall, just be nice and funny and he won't have the slightest problem with you.

Eddie suffers from an INTENSE dislike, no... hate for Artificial Intelligence. Ever since he lost his friends due to one, he's dispised them greatly, and gets aggressive nearly instantly with them. Needless to say, Eddie doesn't harbor any good feelings towards androids or other robotic 'nuisances' either. He could care less about them.

Finally, Eddie has been seen with symptoms of both PTSD and depression most likely due to his past losses. He often has nightmares about the time his ship was attacked and he had lost his friends and this leads him to feel very down and unhappy. He tries to make sure not to bother others with it, though it does get to the point where putting on a fake smile becomes impossible and therefore he cannot hide it.

Sidenote: Eddie, because of human evolution, can become very aroused, strawberries seemingly a trigger to a gun you don't want to pull.

Equipment

The Modicar "Adaptive Warfare Pistol" or AWB is Eddie's sidearm of choice. It is basically a small railgun that can in fact be adjusted to shoot anything metallic, given it is small enough. It has its own ammo, which is more effective than picking something up and using it, but he can use coins and other smaller items with deadly stopping power.

History

At the ripe, young age of sixteen, Eddie applied for the New Gaiyain Pilot's Corp and passed with flying colors. After that, well... He took up a job offered in the Intergalactic Defense Academy where he learned his share of combat skills and further improved his reputation as a pilot. When he was 24, he saved not only himself, but his ship and crew when they took disabling fire to their ship. The captain at the time had been knocked unconcious during the first attack and the person to take up his position were killed.

It was only a little while later that they were attacked by a rogue A.I that had commandeered assualt-class mechs and automated ships. The attack was very severe and Eddie not only lost every single one of his best friends, he lost his captain, with whom he shared a great friendship with. But that wasn't all. Because of that attack, Eddie dispises any form of Robotic Intelligence and is aggressive to the point of acting much out of character when faced with much exposure to them. On top of that, he suffers from nightmares that make him relive those last moments with his deceased friends and crewmates, to the point where he gets very, very depressed or even frightened for a bit.

So begins...

Alexander

Alex was busy prepping for a few of the tests. Nothing to extreme. Just a blood sample, a few checks of blood pressure. Although the machines could tell Alex everything he needed to know, he preferred to get the results himself.

He jolted, however, when he felt someone tap him on the shoulder. He looked down to see Minn smiling up at her. She was thanking him for being so calm, and he smiled back. She was very sweet.

"It's important to remain calm." Alex explained. "If a patient sees the doctor freaking out, well...you can only imagine. By panicking, I can get confused and discombobulated. I could mess up, and cause even more problems."

"I don't have the option of panicking." He added. He smiled down at her, hoping to lighten the glum mood he put the conversation in. She smiled back, and Alex couldn't help but blush. She looked just like his old girlfriend, except for the pink skin.

She thanked him once again, waved at him, and walked back to the mechanic. Alex let out a breath, his shoulders sagging. He continued prepping his paperwork and the instruments he needed. He could hear Minn and Saein talking behind him, Eddie chiming in every now and then.

Regina

Reggie was back on her ship and it didn't take her long to find Dlew back up on the bridge. Everything was rather quiet, she hadn't bumped into anyone on her way up. They were probably off doing their own things. She limped her way over to Dlew and tapped him on the shoulder.

"Sorry about the delay," She said with a smile. "Let's get you downstairs to fix that gear." She helped him out of his chair and they walked together to the elevator. "Meet me in the infirmary. I have to get my tools and the gears. It'll take me a few minutes."

"So you overdosed on feels?" Eddie asked after her explanation.

Saein nodded. “You could put it that way. Or you could call them anti-feels. But that’s the idea.”

When Saein asked for something against her headache, Minn seemed to take that as a hint to leave. "Should we leave you alone?" she asked.

“If it were up to me,” Saein replied, “I’d keep you around all the time. On the other hand, you were busy when Bond dragged you from the kitchen and I don’t want to keep you from your work. On the other... um... foot, have you noticed the dishwasher?”

Alex assured Saein that she was fine, and that she had underestimated the effect hugging Minn would have. No news there. He gave her an injection to end the headache, Saein thought that might be overkill but she didn’t mind, wasn’t a doctor, and would rather not encourage him to undermedicate patients anyway. She thanked him, and said she would let him know when the painkiller began working so they could do those tests.

Minn took great care to express her gratefulness to the doctor. It was cute, and Saein was happy the girl cared about her so much. The first time they met was only a very short while ago, they had instantly liked each other and Saein had felt she should look after Minn. Now the roles were more or less reversed. She wondered what kind of connection they would have next week, next month, next... year?

Minn had returned to her side and asked which side of the bed Saein preferred, mentioning she had no preference herself. Saein began to answer “I’m used to much smaller beds, so I’m not used to there being...” She saw Eddie blushing. “...never mind.” She pondered the question for a moment. “Well, let’s see, I fell over on my right shoulder, so I’ll be sleeping on my left side, and you’re welcome to be the first face I see in the morning instead of mirror-me, so I’ll take the left side.” Saein didn’t consider the implications of this change to the joke she was referring to, in which she had said she was madly in love with her mirror image. Or maybe on some subconscious level she did.

Eddie offered to give them some privacy. She told him “You can stay if you want to, we’re only discussing some practical stuff, I don’t think there’s any harm in you knowing who is on the left. Oh, speaking of practical stuff... MAK, did you give Minn all the same access rights to the room I claimed?”

“I did not. Do you want me to?” the AI replied.

“Yes please.” She turned from talking to the air back to Minn. “There, now it really is your room too.” Saein somehow looked excited and distant at the same time. “What else do we need to talk about? I feel a bit fuzzy... Must be the painkiller... Doc?”

Minn

"Fuzzy? Are you sure you're fine?" Her green irises were on the doctor in urgency, feeling anxious about every little thing. She did notice Eddie's blushes and was beginning to wonder how far his mind was delving into such thoughts. Minn herself had slept among, around, on top of many other girls, but only a few had ever been intimate with each other. Minn remembered seeing such one time...did Eddie find that appealing?

Her training at the club had wired her brain to be obedient and pleasure the males who came inside, and her mind easily drifted to doing so for Eddie, but she snapped back to the present. She didnt have to do that anymore. She was a cook here, not a toy like before. She had friends here, no clients. The thought made her smile and she faced Eddie kindly, only giving off friendly vibes, mentally reminding herself to find less revealing clothing.

Saein seemed okay, and Minn was simply on edge from all the adreneline. Her nerves always got her into fits of worry or made her skittish. But she took a few breaths and calmed down as best as she could. "Where are we off to next?" she asked to change the subject to something Eddie may know.

The pilot smiled and promptly sat down on a nearby chair, forcing it to face the two girls. His mind may wander off to the land of pervertedness and non-holy thoughts, but he would simply ignore it and speak to these two, whom he had found very kind and entertaining. A light blush was still apparent on his face, making him more and more jealous of Minn for her ability to cloak her blushes with his skin tone.

He did know that these two weren't stupid and had his indecent thoughts figured out, so he did feel a bit embarassed. Nevertheless, he sat there and listened as the two talked back and fourth, raising an eyebrow to Saein's statement about feeling fuzzy. He wasn't sure exactly what the doc gave her, but it he knew some painkillers had that effect, on humans at least. Eddie wasn't completetly knowledgable on alien allergies and the sort, though his medical experience did tell him any differences in heart placement and the such.

Eddie was a bit worried, though his worry paled in comparison to Minn, who seemed to be stressed about anything and everything. That was just a bit cute in his opinion. These two were already like sisters to each other, worrying about each other and sharing a bed like they were sisters from the start. That was good for them. The last thing anyone would want was to be stuck on a ship without a friend. Eddie considered these two.... 'friends' of a sort. He didn't want to term it that way since he wasn't sure how they would've felt about him and his stupid and immature thoughts. He does mentally scold himself for having them.

"Where are we off to next?"

Minn's voice snapped him from the silence. "As the pilot, you'd think I would know such things," he told her with a smaller laugh. "But I don't yet. Captain was anxious to get started, so I didn't have time to properly ask, though now that you've reminded me, I'll do so when she gets back on,". He kept a warm smile Minn because it didn't take a genious or an ability to pick up emotions to tell that she was on edge at the moment. In an effort to make her feel that much more comforable, he spoke up about something he just happened to remember. "I can say however, that some of the places I'm certain we'll either be required to stop at or at least pass near will be 'beautiful' in a sense. I'll give you a heads up when that happens and you can see some pretty amazing sights," Eddie stated this as if he had been around the area that they were probably headed towards. He was.

Dlew jumped slightly, startled as Regina’s hand came down on his shoulder. He nodded at her as she told him she would now get back to fixing his broken parts, and he allowed himself to be helped from the chair. Quietly he followed her to the elevator.

"Meet me in the infirmary. I have to get my tools and the gears. It'll take me a few minutes.” She said. Dlew gave a simple “Okay” in response as he stepped into the elevator.

He watched the lights on the wall slowly tick by as it traveled down, waiting patiently until it finally stopped and the door slid open, and then made his way towards the infirmary. Upon his arrival he noticed everyone seeming to be in a happier mood, the people present now exchanging jokes amongst each other. He gave a simple wave of acknowledgement to them as he took a seat at one of the other beds and waited for Regina to return.

“Sure I’m fine, it’s the the-doctor-gave-me-some-goooood-stuff kind of fuzzy. Maybe he wanted to make sure I don’t get up and start working before I’m supposed to” Saein giggled. Minn was adorable when she was worried, but there was no need for her to worry. Everything was okay now. Everything was so very okay.

Minn asked where they were off to next, Eddie explained he didn’t know the specifics but that there were sights to be seen in the area they were heading to. “Sounds good to me, sightseeing is one of the things that will make this job such fun” Saein commented. Her mind went back to the past. “I wish I could show you some of the things I’ve seen.” She imagined herself and Minn in one of those places, a beach between an ocean and a colourful jungle, in front of a double sunset, the pretty girl competing with the pretty view, and winning. With a dreamy expression on her face, she lost herself in real-world-Minn’s eyes. “But of course the best view of all is already on the sh-” Saein stopped herself. “Damnit, I’m high, aren’t I?” She bit her hand to stifle a giggle fit. Once she had herself back under control, she stared at the ceiling to avoid looking at Eddie and Minn. If Saein and Eddie had been in a blushing competition, she might be winning now. “Ooh boy. What was the way humans put it? In vino veritas?” She wasn’t sure why, but that phrase from a long-dead language was funny. A few deep breaths prevented the giggles from starting again.

Saein waved back at Dlew when he entered the infirmary. She guessed Reggie would be making repairs to him here, and she was curious about those. Too bad that in her current state she might not be able to follow what was going on.

Alexander

Alex turned when Saein called for him. The drugs were definitely in affect. Minn was already concerned, her green eyes locking onto his. "Relax Minn," He said kindly, a small laugh in his words. "Everything is fine. It's just a side effect."

He stepped over to Saein's bed and immediately checked her pulse. Everything was working fine, her body was still functioning properly. He jotted a few things down on his clipboard as he continued checking through vital signs. He took a vial full of blood and set it down in a machine to be processed. He pressed his stethoscope to her stomach, her back, and her chest, to get clear sounds of her heart.

Again, he jotted down his findings. Alex listened to Minn and Saein talk; always a silent doctor. Preferring to do his tests, and let the patient remain comfortable. Speaking with friends always calmed patients, and helped to get more accurate tests. The effects of the drugs he had given Saein were definitely working.

"But of course the best view of all is already on the sh-"

Alex felt his pen slip from his hand as he looked from Saein to Minn. Saein's face was turning redder than he had ever seen and, looking over at Eddie, Alex noticed the pilot had caught on to what Saein was saying earlier. Finally, his eyes locked on Minn, whose expression was still completely oblivious to what Saein had just said. Missing the implications in her words.

Alex coughed to get everyone's focus off of Saein's words, but she was already covering up. "Damnit, I'm high, aren't I? Ooh boy. What was the way humans put it? In vino veritas?"

Alex laughed outwardly. Surprised to hear an alien race use such a dead language. A human one at that. "In wine there is truth." Alex said translating the Latin phrase.

"Round, round with the glass, boys as fast as you can,
Since he who don't drink cannot be a true man.
For if truth is in wine, then 'tis all but a whim
To think a man's true when the wine's not in him.
Drink, drink then, and hold it a maxim divine
That there's virtue in truth, and there's truth in good wine."

Alex spoke casually as he continued to take the last few tests on Saein. When he was finished he checked off the last thing and smiled down at the mechanic as he finished the last line in the poem. "Funny that a Firni would know a Latin phrase." He chuckled again. "Everything is fine. Once I get the blood test results back, I'll know for sure that there's nothing internal wrong. Once the drugs wear off, you'll be free to go."

He smiled again and hooked his clipboard to Saein's bed. He was startled to find the android, Dlew, had joined them in the infirmary. He waved hello and then plopped down at his desk waiting for the results.

Regina

Reggie grabbed her tool kit from the hangar and spent a good five minutes digging through the spare part closet trying to find the right piece. Sure enough, it happened to buries underneath every other piece of spare part that she had gathered over the years.

Sighing with victory, the captain made her way to the infirmary. Hopefully, Dlew hadn't collapsed and broken by now. He should be fine. The gear was still working inside his body, Dlew would just never be properly fixed until they fixed it. And the longer they put it off, the more complications could occur. That damn gear could completely destroy the others gears if it dislodged itself anymore.

When Reggie arrived in the infirmary, she was surprised to find several people already there. Minn and Eddie were sitting next to Saein in one of the beds. "What happened?" Reggie asked stepping up to the bed.

"Saein just over estimated," Alex responded from behind her. She spun to see him looking over a few papers by his desk. "She'll be back up and running in an hour tops. No worries."

Reggie shook her head with a smile. "I can't leave you guys alone for five minutes without someone ending up in the infirmary." She stepped away from the bed to find Dlew sitting on one of the beds in the corner.

"How are you feeling?" She asked. "Do you feel any discomfort?"

She was already digging through her tool kit to find the item she needed. When she found it, she pulled it out. A small square object that would be inserted into a slot behind Dlew's ear. It was basically a system override. It shut down any android's functions and put them into a sort of anesthetic sleep. Reggie nodded as she listened to Dlew's reply to her questions immediately checked to make sure he had the proper docking that she needed. He did.

"Alright Dlew, this won't take long at all." She said to him with a smile. "No worries."

She slowly inserted the override and immediately Dlew shut down. His body slumped forward and Reggie easily caught him. She pushed him back onto the bed and rolled him over so she could get a clear view of his back. She pulled open the door like she did when she was giving him a check up and immediately dug her way through to the dislodged gear.

She carefully removed it, her hands already covered in grease and sticky materials, and chucked into a small bin that was meant for bodily organs. Technically that gear was an organ, just not the usual slimy, slippery ones.

It took Reggie maybe ten minutes to get the new gear properly placed in Dlew's back. It kept getting stuck on other gears and parts. But, finally, she managed to screw it in properly and close the backing. She moved to wipe her hands on her pants, but decided against it.

Although the black substance wouldn't show up on her black pants, she figured a proper washing would be a better idea. She wiped them clean, as best she could, before rolling Dlew back over and removing the override chip.

She chucked it back into her tool kit and stepped over to the sink to clean her hands. It would be a while before Dlew woke up, a good five minutes or so depending on how long it took his systems to reboot.

“But of course the best view of all is already on the sh-”

Of course. Of fucking course, Eddie thought. She had to be doing this on purpose, to toy with him or something. That was the only explaination for this, wasn't it? Even if she was a little 'off' with the medication, Eddie couldn't help but think that she was trying to see the extent to which his mind would travel. Unfortunately, Eddie once watched a whole movie in his head, about an hour long because he had watched in SO many times. He remembered every scene and every bit of dialogue perfectly. This meant that he could cook up something in his head pretty good and vivid.... something he was TRYING to avoid doing. Alas, it seemed like going a while without doing anything naughty had backfired on him, urges compelling him to do something he wouldn't normally do. At least he was strong enough to only think about such things and not act upon his primal wants.

Eddie hadn't the concentration to notice the doctor had begun reassuring Minn and started doing little tests on Saein. Figuring he might as well mature and hide any signs of those... displeasurable fantasies, he started observing the doctor as he did his job and raised an eyebrow in response to the doctor giving him a brief glance. The look in Eddie's eyes told the doctor he had heard exactly what Saein had said. Soon, the doctor looked back at Saein after giving Minerva a glance over as well. Eddie couldn't help but smile at Minn's inability to properly figure out what Saein had said. That was.... cute.

Listening to the doctor recite this poem caused Ackers to simply be quiet and listen. Eddie was not a poet in the least and didn't know any poetry at all, which some might find embarassing, seeing as Saein knew ancient human poetry and she was an alien. But then again, Eddie never bothered with that stuff. Eddie could however, quote various generals and presidents from times long passed, as he was into older militaries. Some of the greatest advice (in Eddie's opinion) came in a sentence or two from a wise man. Probably his most favorie quote was "In the absence of fear, stupidity takes place," by.... unknown. However, he originally didn't see the meaning behind this until his first firefight. This might've saved a lone man who thought he was a hero, had he listened to it. Thus, he would make sure he never went against this little piece of advice...hopefully.

Eddie happened to notice their captain join them in the infirmiry. He looked at her and smiled before speaking real quick. "Remind me to get our exact course from you when you're free," he asked, then turned back to Minn and Saein, signalling he'd wait until later before he asked. Eventually, he managed to smile (with only a smaller blush now) at Saein. "I'm guessing you're a fun drunk as well?" he joked with a smaller laugh accompanying it. "I guess if you really think I'm that devilishly handsome....." he trailed off with a smile as he twisted the subject of her words from before.

“That was a nice recital, doctor” Saein smiled at him. “I’d love to hear more human poetry, if you have time sometime. I know the phrase because it was the name of a human cafe, it was opposite a courthouse. Bartender wouldn’t stop explaining the name to everyone who wasn’t human.” She chuckled. “Can’t blame him, it is a good joke.”

Alex told her she would be allowed to go once the effects of the drug wore off. Saein joked “But I don’t want it to wear off! This stuff is, like, far out, maaaaaan. And I like the company around here, and being in good hands and stuff.”

She wasn’t sure what Eddie meant when he asked her if she was a fun drunk. And then he mentioned her thinking he was devilishly handsome. With a ditzy look that she couldn’t manage if she tried if she were sober, she asked “Hmmmmmm? Fun drunk? I like good alcohol but not to get drunk, doesn’t seem to work anymore. But painkillers still get me shitfaced. They sure do. Are you... are you asking me for a date or something? I gotta admit you are handsome, and you're a nice guy and all, and... what was I saying... you’re a fine man but you’re not as pretty and not as sweet and not as good a cook as who I like most.” She crossed her arms and shook her head. “Nuh-uh. No date.”

Her attention shifted back from Eddie to Minn. After a few seconds her dazed expression changed into shock. Saein pulled up her legs, wrapped her arms around her knees and hid her face. “Okay, can the painkiller wear off now please?” she said with a weak voice. “Also, kill me?” She was sure Minn would think of her as a manipulative monster now, someone who would invite a girl into her bed while hiding her true intentions. “I’m sorry, I just wanna be friends can’t be anything else anyway... sorry sorry sorry”

Saein was shaking a little - crying, maybe? She didn’t make the sound of, and they couldn’t see while she was hiding her face like that.

Minn

Blinking, Minn stared at Saein oddly. She just...and...Minn tilted her head, not fully comprehending Saein's words just now. Minn had been enjoying the talk about the human words, but this shift...

For some reason she stood up, stepping away from the bed. She felt...weird. Especially under Saein's gaze, but she had now hidden his face. Minn's throat tightened and she hurried forward, patting Saein's back. "What's wrong? Do you feel okay?"

Even if Saein's words meant what she thought they meant, Minn could wait to deal with them when they were alone. Unless Saein wanted to talk now...or...Minn felt her face and hands grow hot under the confusion. She was very aware of the others in the room having heard everything. Oh, how Saein must feel! She comforted her friend, as friends do. Robotic were her actions though.

Minn cast a glance to Eddie, feeling alone somehow and wondering what he took from this.

Eddie froze for a minute. Not as pretty or as sweet? Even though it was a joke, he felt oddly hurt with the rejection. Not that he was expecting her to date him or anything, he just wasn't expecting to be denied....because of Minn. That actually caught him offguard from a minute, and he shook his head before recovering. "Eh....well, your loss," he tried to joke. It didn't come out right and just sounded awkward.

Suddenly, Saein tried to hide her face with her knees, obviously embarassed at her attitude caused by the painkillers. He was about to laugh and tell her it was okay until.... she started acting a bit weird. It was as if she was was actually sad... this was a problem. Eddie's joking demeanor instantly switched to a more or less 'fatherly' one as the one thing he couldn't stand more than anything else in the universe was a lady crying. Oh how chilvarous of him. Regardless, he spoke softly but truthfully after giving a glance at Minn telling her he wasn't bothered by what she said earlier compared to how she was now. He wasn't going to change his opinion of her at all, and he hoped everyone else in the room would refrain from doing so either.

He shortened the distance between him and Saein but kept himself from physically comforting her like Minn was doing, lest he cause more problems. However, he did his best to verbally assure her nothing was wrong. "Saein... don't worry," he said. "You don't need to be worried about anything at all. I'm sure out of all people here, Minn doesn't think any less of you than I do- and I don't have a single complaint about you. Well, I can't say that truthfully.... you did resist my charms....." he tried a joke to lighten up the mood a bit and could only hope it worked. He sighed before speaking again, knowing that if they had any doubts as to what he was thinking about when he blushed earlier, they wouldn't now."If anyone should be sorry, it's me. I'm the one being immature and taking anything you girls do or say out of context.... way out of context," he offered only the slightest laugh and still resisted the urge to rub her back or do any kind of physical gesture of kindness. Minn had that down at least.

Saein cringed further when Minn stepped away from her. She soon returned, asking what was wrong and even still willing to pat her back. Relieved, she straightened her back and neck. “Mouth faster than brain is what’s wrong.”

Eddie knew the right things to say. The joke about resisting his charms made Saein laugh a little, softly, as if she was afraid to fill the room like she usually did. “You’re okay, Eddie. I like you” she told him. “Don’t worry about that dirty mind, as long as nobody is bothered by it, it’s something to enjoy.” That sounded much more like her usual self to her. She told herself she could still be in control of herself, if she talked slower and took time to think before speaking.

Saein lied down, forcing Minn to stop patting her back. She looked straight at Minn, sincere, almost calm. “I was planning to keep a secret from you. Forever, or... or at least until I could figure out what it is anyway.” She sighed. “Can we talk about this later today? No more embarrassing subjects until my thoughts and feelings make sense again. Let’s talk about... I dont’t know... hey, what is your favourite food? You know that about everyone else but we don’t know yours.” It was only a random thought from a messy mind, but a good one. If asking her to talk about food wouldn’t make Minn relax, what could?

Minn

Minn favored later as well. So she pondered Saein's question quickly, grateful for a subject change. "Any vegetable," she said after thinking back. "Cooked specific ways for each, but roots veggies are my favorite I suppose. There's actually a root vegetable mash that I love making, but most think it tastes odd. But its excellent if prepared correctly."

Food talk definitely was claming her down and she took her seat beside Saein again, though she refrained from touching her, knowing that she could still hurt Saein with too much physical contact. So she laced her fingers together in her lap and smiled. "But ham...is amazing to me. Real ham. Hard to find, but totally worth it. I can't believe this ship has some! Its so expensive! I have no idea how so much could be in one place. So glad I'm on this ship. Even if take-off's are...jolting." She giggled at the memory of her own freakout.

“They sure are” Saein replied. “This was the first time I ended up in the infirmary because of one.” She was glad Minn could laugh at what had happened, though she didn’t find it funny herself. She just wished Minn could be happy and relaxed forever from now on.

Not willing to talk about a topic that might change back into more embarrasment, she changed the subject back to food. “Ham is a meat, isn’t it? But root vegetables... I don’t think I’ll try your favourite dish” she said with regret. “I can’t eat root vegetables.” She thought of creatures of Wen that ate roots. “But I do eat things that eat root vegetables.”

Saein imagined her ancestors from tens of thousands of years ago, wearing animal skins and carrying primitive weapons. “We’re disappointed in you” one that looked like her grandmother told her. “Not only do you disrespect your kind by refusing to know what animals your food came from, you’re thinking of making a food creature your mate. Disgusting! Do you have no self respect?”
Another, who looked like her grandfather, said “Never mind that weakling, she’s doing the right thing by removing herself from the gene pool.”
“You’d be surprised what doctors can do nowadays” Saein countered in her imagination.
The imaginary woman hissed and raised a spear at Minn. “I’ll show you the proper way to play with your food. It’s for eating, not breeding.”

Saein instinctively made herself wide, and felt her venom fangs unlock. Those were only small, but it was better not to show them to other races, some might freak out. Squeezing her mattress, she commanded herself to keep her mouth shut and relax. She shouldn’t let her imagination take over like that. Later, she should ask the doctor not to use this particular drug on her again.

Had Eddie or Minn noticed anything? She hoped they hadn’t asked her anything. “What were you saying? My imagination took me away for a moment.” She shuddered. “And not to a happy place this time.”

Eddie listened to the girls discuss food. At first, Minn had a rather.... unpreferable favorite food, at least in Eddie's opinion. Vegetables were not Eddie's favorite thing to eat, and he loved most forms of meat. Should he mention the list again? Needless to say, the second she brought up ham, he became interested. "Ham?" he said aloud, though he didn't even notice. He did so love ham. But.... more than anything in the world..... he fucking loved bacon. The thought of that taste gracing his mouth was close to making him have a tongue orgasm or something. Gosh did he love real bacon. Bacon from real pigs was the best and no other form of animal could beat it, and that was fact, not opinion.

Saien answered... oddly. It almost sounded like she was allergic to root veggies, at least that's what it sounded like to Eddie. He doubted that hightly though. The way she worded it was nowhere near as strange as what he saw next. Fangs? He didn't remember Saein's kind having fangs.... then again, he didn't know everything about her kind, just some basic history and whatnot. He raised an eyebrow in worry.

"I saw," he answered bluntly. "Is.... something wrong? You seemed a bit.... hostile there for a moment,"

After finishing the sentence “And not to a happy place this time”, Saein became aware she had felt two familiar clicks in front of her mouth when she started “What were you saying?”. Damnit, now not only her mind but also her body didn’t do what she wanted!

"I saw," Eddie answered bluntly. "Is.... something wrong? You seemed a bit.... hostile there for a moment."

Making sure those extra teeth were properly hidden before talking again, she replied “I can’t wait for this stupid drug to wear off, I’d rather have kept the headache. Don’t worry, I imagined something really unpleasant and got defensive, but as long as I know it’s only my imagination...” She pondered what else to say to reassure Eddie, and Minn if she had also caught a glimpse. “If you ever see those again,” she pointed at her mouth, “I’m sure you’ll be really happy to see them. But I suggest you keep hostile creatures outside biting distance. Most of them bite too.”

She tilted her head, something had suddenly occurred to her. “You do both own weapons, right? In theory nothing nasty should ever manage to board the ship, but in practice... it sometimes happens.” Saein had a feeling the most dangerous thing Minn was carrying was that spoon. She didn’t like that one bit.

Minn

Eyes wide, Minn tried to come up with words in reaction to the teeth she saw from Saein. Just full of surprises she was, but Eddie responded first thankfully. Minn leaned away from the pink haired girl a little, not touching her any longer and staring probably too much. But Saein changed the subject briskly and Minn calmed slightly, thinking about the question.

"I don't," she admitted truthfully. "Never was allowed to learn. Though it would have come in handy back..." She cut off, not wanting to divulge too much about her past. "But I'll learn," she promised with a small smile. "As best as I can at least. Could probably have our weapon's gal get something small for me. Right?"

She tried to keep her tone lighthearted, but she still refused to touch Saein now.

Bond

Making his way back to the ship, Bond came across another crew member. The weapons engineer if he was correct in his memories. He approached with a friendly smile and wave. "Did you go here?" he asked her, trying to remember her name. "Arc right?"

He stood with her, knowing he would like to get to know the person responsible for their weapons, even if he wasn't going to be the one out in the field unless needed.

Motioning to the student portraits, he added, "I don't see your face...but you don't see mine either. Though I doubt yours was removed. They need all the pretty lady pictures they can get. For funding and such. Diversity, woo."

Dlew suddenly woke as his systems finished rebooting. He looked around, having to take a moment to correct his vision that seems to always take the longest to reset, everything seeming very much out of focus. He shook his head, the reboot requiring now for him to sift through his memory banks in order to remember what happened, what’s going on and where in the world he was. He blinked a few times, finally recollecting on past events, and looked up, noting that Saein, Minn and Eddie were still here.

“You do both own weapons, right?” Saein was talking now, and Dlew adjusted his gaze onto her. “In theory nothing nasty should ever manage to board the ship, but in practice
 it sometimes happens.”

Dlew took a moment to recall Rina’s teachings. He thought about it, how she had showed him to wield a sidearm, and knew that no matter what she did, not even after his fail safe was removed from his programming, he couldn’t pull the trigger. Her words rang through his ears still, how she had told him it must have something to do with a part of his past that got locked away in the deepest, darkest crevices of his gears. “It must’ve been traumatic,” she had said.

His thinking was interrupted now as he realized no one had taken notice to his awakening. He spoke finally in his usual dull tone. “I know how to handle a gun, aim it, but I just can’t seem the pull the trigger
No matter what I point at” He sighed, “I wish I knew why I couldn’t pull the trigger.” The android trailed off for a moment, speaking it seemed more to himself than anything. “She told me it was something traumatic with my past, something so terrible that I had locked it away. She said she couldn’t hack through those memories
”

Suddenly Dlew looked up, for once emotion sprawled clearly across his face, a look of pure anger that could stop someone dead in their tracks. “I looked up to her! She was the best hacker, sniper, inventor and she was my friend! She could be dead for all I know!” he continued, his voice rising more and more to the point of almost screaming. He voiced faltered for a moment, “The worst part is
”

He stopped suddenly, his voice failing him as he looked like he was on the verge of tears. He realized now he may have taken it too far and saw the looks of concern in Minn, Eddie and Saein’s faces. Dlew shook his head and looked to them apologetically, and began thinking, could I be going through rampancy? How old am I? How long can an AI last before going rampant?

The android wouldn’t blame the others for wanting him off the ship as questions poured through his head, but if he could get through all the stages, he could be considered human. Dlew continued on in deep thought, and knew that even when considered human, this could be deadly for the other crew members. Maybe they could lock him away as he went through the anger stage? After that they should be somewhat safe
He looked up now, continuing in his meager voice. “I am sorry, I didn’t mean for that to happen. I am so sorry.”

Before anyone could respond the android suddenly ran for the door, making way for the barracks, for someplace to be alone. After making it a good distance from the medical bay, he spoke aloud to MAK.

“MAK! Where are the barracks?”

"Get out your tablet, I shall upload it there,” replied the AI.

Dlew reached to his side and it suddenly dawned on him he had left his satchel in the medical bay. He let out a cry of frustration, cursing himself mentally. “Great, just great!” he yelled. Suddenly those his eyes widened, he had done it again. He had let anger take hold of him. “MAK! I’m staying in this hall. Please, don’t tell anyone where I am
” MAK’s reply wasn’t what he wanted to hear, but he sighed in compliance.

“I can do that, but if the Captain asks, I will have to tell her.”

“Well if she asks, tell her at least that I want to be alone
”

“I will inform the Captain when she asks.”

“Something small and simple sounds right to me” Saein nodded. “Try to get something that feels nice to your hand, you’ll probably be nervous if you ever need it and then anything that makes you shake less is good.” She pulled her own gun from her pocket, holding it by the business end, and handed it to Minn. “Or, if we have any, I could teach you how to use one of these. Small but not simple. Shoots, welds, lights, flashes, burns, cleans dishes...” Saein tried to help Minn hold the weapon correctly, but the girl avoided her touch.

Minn had stopped wanting to touch her. In a way, that was a relief, but on the other hand Saein didn’t want her to stop. She had stopped because of a fantasy in which Saein was protecting Minn. How ironic. Saein wished she could explain. Maybe if she left out almost all of the details? “Minn, a moment ago I said I eat things that eat root vegetables. That set off my imagination to someone else calling you food. I wasn’t going to let them. Please don’t be afraid of me because of that.” She was begging, sad face and puppy eyes and all. Imagining what her own begging looked like, she felt embarrassed yet again.

Dlew interrupted her thoughts and everything else by going into some kind of angry rage and running off. “They’re not supposed to do that, are they?” she asked.

That question.... Eddie could've answered it rather well, honestly. Later on, they might even laugh at the memory of asking such a thing due to how much he loved his weapons. While one of them was in storage, he did have his sidearm on him, hidden beneath his shirt actually. This magnificant weapon was nearly worshipped by Eddie whom was saved countless times on some plantets. The chrome finish it had too.... it was beautiful. The thing could shoot damn near anything magnetic so long as it wasn't too big. Some examples would be coins, metallic bottle caps and Batteries. These could be fire for lethal effect too, so it wasn't really something you screwed around with, either. It even had its own ammunition, which varied in effect but overall it just demolished whatever it hit, besides the more heavier armors.

Before he could even voice his answer, Minn spoke of her lack of a firearm and of experience as well, notabley avoiding physical contact with Saein when she attempted to show her about her weapon just moments after. Was she afraid? That's what Saein assumed as he thought the same thing and she explained what happened, vaguely. The expression on her face..... it was too adorable! Good thing it wasn't Eddie being the target of those eyes; he couldn't resist them and preferred to keep that weakness secret as people were bound to use it against him.

He had just noticed that Dlew had been raving about something or other before storming off out of the Infirmiry, leaving behind something in the process. Eddie raised an eyebrow to the event before turning to Saein as she spoke a question in confusion. "Err, I'm not too sure actually. All organic crews on my ships during my stay at the IDA," he informed. "Oh yeah, I keep me a fine AWP wherever I go, along with Chidori, but she's in storage right now," he explained.
