Refer to text description if you want to be absolutely sure about colors.

Saein has curly reddish purple hair that doesn't reach her shoulders, and dark blue eyes. She has freckles all over her white skin, that seem to change and blink with her thoughts. Firni can sense these spots when touching each other, which makes touching other species feel very weird. Saein is not exactly skinny, but in too good shape to be called fat.

All her clothes have many pockets, even the two dresses. Most of her clothes are dark blue, matching her eyes. When working, she usually wears pants and a sweater. She sometimes wears a faded orange jacket with the nametag "MECHANIC Saein V", and the RMEE logo on the back.

She has a remarkable tolerance for alcohol.

Her species is able to distinguish scents about as well as dogs are. Unlike dogs, that makes them a bit picky about food. They are humanoids that before they developed modern technology filled (oddly enough) a pollinator/predator niche combination in the ecosystem of one of the continents of their home planet Wen. Firni may look pretty harmless at first sight, but they have been at the top of the food chain since before they had any technology...

There are some hidden differences between Firni and humans.

The most obvious are in their mouths: a long thin and hollow extra tongue, and venom fangs that fold away when they’re not needed (which is pretty much always now they don’t kill their food that way anymore for hundreds of years already). Evolution has shrunk those fangs a bit.

Less obvious (and unknown to Saein at the beginning of this story) is that their reproductive systems are different. Basically they are like marsupials: what under clothes looks like a human chest is actually a pair of pouches, and they have a much tinier interpretation of the word “big”. The reason most Firni have no idea of this of course is that they wouldn’t touch other species, getting even closer is out of the question. Saein is a bit weird and perhaps naive, taking anti-racism so seriously she wants to learn to treat similar looking species the same in ALL aspects of life.

Personality

Saein is someone you can rely on, but if you're going to tell her a secret, you'd better do that in a soundproof room, because she's often quite loud. Recently she has been paying attention to behaving correctly (which includes being less loud and thinking more before she speaks), this is caused by her increased self-consciousness around members of other species.

Socially, she is warm, usually confident, and often rash.

Professionally, she's professional enough, and expects others to be the same. She still follows the three rules she was taught at RMEE:

  1. Fix even the smallest problems ASAP.
  2. Don't do anything that could interfere with anyones work.
  3. Take good care of your crewmates.

She doesn't seem to care much for money or appearances, but couldn't live in a place without a mirror.

She doesn’t feel about weight the way humans do, and would even like to gain more, but be careful when talking about it anyway, because she will be offended when she thinks you said she is too heavy to do her job. It’s not a body image but a professional pride thing.

Equipment

Tools, tools, and more tools. Many more than she needs. She's a collector. Most of her tools may be useful but not necessary on a spaceship, but those she is most proud of are for things like opening a rare species of nut from an obscure planet.

She owns a small multifunctional ion gun that is easily hidden in one of her pockets. Functions are selected by turning a ring (concentric with the barrel), there is a small fingerprint reader on the side that needs to be touched by the owner to get the ring out of the “off” position. The gun is a few years older than her, but as precise and powerful as anything similar you could buy in places known to humans. It was a gift from a guy when she was 20. Others gave her a lot of less useful things to compete with him, but she didn’t keep any of that.

She also owns a datapad (which includes wireless communication, a camera, her medical files, the RMEE handbook, an encyclopedia, etc etc), and a small black cylindrical device used to inhale a relaxant equivalent to tea.

History

Saein was born on the continent Wen on her home planet Wen, which is located in the solar system called Wen. “Wen” means “home”.

Image

After two years of mandatory military service* in which she became a mechanic, she found a job with RMEE (Rare Materials Exploration & Exploitation, often called "Roaming Miners Exploding & Expiring" by employees) at age 20. Staying with the same company, she worked on a number of different types of ships on missions with increasing odds of serious damage to the ships. RMEE is known for its informal culture, high pay and high risks. During her time at this company she has suffered burns, broken bones and radiation poisoning, all of that has healed and her life has not been shortened by it. Saein has saved a lot of money in her ten years at RMEE, but it's not enough to retire just yet.

At 30, she found a safer job on a large state-owned ship, but it turned out to be boring, and the guy directly above her in the chain of command was a jerk.

She quit and somehow managed to walk straight into the one hotel where someone was in need of a mechanic. This is her first mission with a mixed species crew.

*) The government of Wen has not signed any significant treaties beyond the typical "let's all not attack each other". There haven't been any wars for a long time, but the weirdness caused by touching members of other species had made diplomacy difficult because it led many Firni to be slightly racist. In the last ~30 years there have been more enthusiastic attempts at diplomacy than before, but it still hasn't gone very far. Most Firni under the age of 50 hate racism.

So begins...

A woman was sitting at the other end of the bar. A casual observer might not have noticed her, if that casual observer was blind or very drunk. Her hair was a color somewhere in between purple and red, there were pockets all over her dark blue dress, the freckles on her skin seemed to be moving, and although she wasn't exactly fat, she was what a polite person might call "well rounded". You'd notice her if she were quietly sitting in a corner. Which she wasn't.

In front of her was a collection of empty glasses, the one in her hand contained a dark beer, from which she drank through what might have looked like a straw... if it didn't disappear into her mouth every time she spoke. Oddly enough she didn't seem drunk at all, just agitated. Her free arm was pointing in a different direction after every other word. She was talking to the barkeep, not bothered by the fact he didn't look interested except when she ordered another glass, nor by everyone else hearing her. "... so I say to him, 'I don't care you're going to have to find the ambassador a new mechanic. You. Don't. Ever. Grab. Saein. I quit, I quit, and when I say I quit, I quit.' ... Gimme another one, cause I can still feel the creep."

Bond

Ears perking, Bond spun about before Reg could respond. He saw the reddish haired gal, the one other than the cook, and heard her say she was a mechanic. He nudged Reg and laughed. "What kind of luck is that?"

It was quite strange, and lucky. Two things he rarely liked. But he smiled to the mechanic and hoped she was into getting hired. Reggie seemed on the hunt.

Reggie had heard it too, before Bond nudged her. "What kind of luck is that?"

Too lucky. She looked up at the ceiling, wondering if there was a greater power helping her out. She didn't believe in such things, mainly because she had lived higher than the clouds her hole life, and had yet to find someone worth being a God. Pushing her stool back, Reggie climbed off the stool and moved to the one next to the red head.

"I'll have what she's having," She said to the barkeep who obliged. Reggie took a swing of the alcohol finding it was duller than the one she usually drank. "Uh, uh," Reggie chastised. "If you want to drown your sorrows you need Crilos. Not beer." She nodded to the barkeep who quickly filled two glasses with Crilos.

It was an alien alcohol, but damn good. Most places served it, since every race loved it. Something about the taste, it was addictive. Reggie gulped down her glass, watching the red head do the same.

"So, I hear your a mechanic," She said setting her empty glass down on the bar. "You wouldn't happen to be looking for a job?"

Saein raised her glass of Crilos. "Thanks. You're right, that would work better, if I had sorrows. I'm celebrating."

"You wouldn't happen to be looking for a job?"

Saein smiled kindly as she quickly looked Reggie up and down. "I might be, if your crew can keep their hands away from where they're not invited and your cook is any good." She sipped her glass half empty. "Heh. That's me, you can tell me about the pay and the ship and the mission and whatnot, but you have to show me the cook." She took a datapad from one of her many pockets, tapped it twice and handed it to Reggie. "And there's my CV, if you care for it." The woman seemed in a hurry to find a mechanic, any mechanic, so it probably didn't matter much, but why pass up an opportunity to show off?

A good cook was all she needed? Reggie almost laughed. If only she had some of those pastries Minn made leftover. Who was she kidding, there was noway those were lasting the night.

"Well, you are in luck my friend," Reggie said. "Because the cook I just hired is phenomenal! Tasted her food myself, although I don't really know your food tastes." She explained.

The woman seemed to mull it over, as she pulled her datapad from her bag. Handing it to Reggie, she said something about just needing the cook. Reggie was too busy flipping through the woman's credentials. They were amazing.

She had worked on several ships, some of which were still functioning and sailing the stars as of today. Amazing. Reggie eyed the young woman again. She remembered her remark about people putting their hands where they shouldn't and she smiled.

"Don't worry about the touching thing," Reggie explained. "I'm a female captain, I'm not putting up with that kind of bullshit." She laughed out loud. "But you seem great, I would love to have you as part of my crew. And I'm sure our cook, Minn, would love to know what your favorite dish is."

She laughed again. "Can I get your name?"

"Phenomenal eh?" Saein turned on her bar stool as if to double check on something she had seen earlier and sniffed the air. "So it's the girl trying to strangle a spoon over there? Cause two halfway decent cooks in one hotel isn't very likely." She looked over her shoulder at the barkeep. "No offense". Turning back to Reggie, she explained "I can't tell from over here who it is, but someone smells like she can really cook. And well, the spoon... If you can afford a cook like that, I trust there's nothing so terribly wrong with the ship it will make me regret taking the job."

After drinking the rest of her Crilos, Saein asked the barkeep for another beer. Sure, Crilos tasted great in its simple way, but there was something interesting about the flavor of this particular beer.

She grabbed Reggie's hand with both of hers. For a split second she shivered, she could never get used to touching the skin of other species. It felt weird, like expecting a living being and getting a stuffed animal instead. It was nice, just not what her subconscious expected. "Name's Saein. I'm looking forward to working with you, captain...?"

Inqueta hadn't bothered with getting to know her crew mates the night before. She understood that she would have the entire next day for that. She stuck around long enough to catch most of their names, but then went to bed, quite early. She curled up in a little ball, and rose early. She was walking out of her room when she saw the Tourain from the night before sneaking out of his room. He had all of his stuff with him, and it didn't look like he was coming back. Inque glared at him, but silently continued walking. She sat at the end of the bar, and blended in, watching as everyone came downstairs. The captain seemed to have a healthy enough appetite. Her second in command, who seemed just the slightest bit hungover to Inque, took her hashbrowns, which just made her order more. She got up and went upstairs after a loud noise.

The blue skinned girl turned her attention to the Shariva and the pilot. Two of the people she had met the night before. There was someone sitting near them too. A human. She hadn't seen him last night. She shrugged the thought off and stepped off her chair and walked over to the two, or rather, three, of them. "Goodmorning." She said to them, giving the same greeting she had given the previous night. Just as she was sitting down, the new guy got up and walked away. He went over the the captain and they exchanged a few words. Reggie looked upset, but Inqueta didn't bother to listen to them. The girl looked over the menu. She simply ordered juice, unlike a few who were already drinking alcohol so early in the morning.

"Well Saein, welcome to the Nightwing." Reggie smiled. "Yes, the cook is the one with the spoon." She laughed. "Her name is Minn, go ahead and introduce yourself."

Glancing around the bar, Reggie asked for another drink. This time a harder alcohol, one that hopefully help her grouchy mood. She was still pissed at Val for completely bailing. Who did he think he was? God damn freeloader.

Reggie pounded down the drink and glanced around the bar, counting heads. They were missing one other person. The doctor. She sighed and climbed up the stairs, quickly finding the room that had to be his. She knocked twice, waiting for a response. She knocked again calling his name.

Nothing.

She felt panic course through her spine. What if something happened to him? Granted he could just be in the shower, but she couldn't shake her panicked feeling. She twisted the knob and pushed open the door.

"Doc?"

Saein frowned, and the pattern of spots on her face became disorderly. Why hadn't the captain introduced herself after asking her name, which by the way happened to be listed at the top of her resume? She figured the woman had to be under a lot of stress, and when the captain suggested to go introduce herself, she took it as a hint to get out of the way. "I'll do just that" she said with a smile. "I'm happy to be one problem off your list."

Beer in hand, she walked over to Minn. "Hi! I'm told you're Minn, the cook of the Nightwing. My name is Saein, and I'll be your appliance repairwoman." She put down her drink and offered her hand. If Minn accepted the handshake, Saein would shake with both hands, like she always did. "Oh, and I'll be fixing the rest of the ship too. Who else here will I be working with?"

Minn

"Saein?" Minn repeated to make sure she had the pronunciation right. She held out her hand for the new recruit to use both of hers to shake it. Minn smiled, curious about the custom. "You're Ms. Fix-it huh? Well, yeah I'm Minn. I deal with the food. And this is Eddie our pilot."

Saein continued to shake hands with Eddie as well. Minn smiled, liking the girl's directness and her curling reddish hair. It was nearly the same as hers, though Minn's was more pinkish than anything. She seemed nice and Minn hoped she would remain so, wondering what had happened to the last mechanic they had hired...

"That's right, Sa-ine." Saein pronounced her name a bit slower to help Minn. "Miss Fix-it? Ha! I like that. And I can tell you don't just 'deal' with food, give yourself some credit hon. Or make me some Wen-style sour dumplings sometime, and I'll do the bragging for you."

She turned to Eddie. "Right, so you're the one who will be nagging me about the controls not being 'just right'. Pleased to meet you anyway." Her big grin revealed she only meant the part about being pleased to meet him. She wondered if shaking hands with the entire crew in little time as possible might help her get rid of that annoying twitch (had Eddie noticed it or was she imagining things?). It wasn't their fault they were members of different species. She'd probably run out of jokes that way. Oh well. "But seriously, anytime you notice anything the slightest bit odd, tell me. I like to stop problems before they become difficult to solve. I'm lazy like that." Should she ask Eddie what kind of ship the Nightwing was? Nah, she would see soon enough.

Saein noticed Minn looking at her. "Do you like my hair, Minn? I like yours, it's almost the same color as that of the one woman I'm madly in love with... You know, first face I see every morning when I brush my teeth, I'm sure you met her."

Minn

Laughing, Minn knew she definitely liked this woman.

"I do like it," she said. "How do you get it so curly? Mine's only as curly as this right now, barely anything." She flicked a bit of her pinkish hair and it fell back into his natural wave.

"And as for the dumplings, I'll need to remember the exact recipe for Wen delicacies. I've only made them once before. Well received though."

All the talking was calming her down considerably and she even noticed her back wasn't completely straight by that point. She fixed that though right away, still not wanting to look anything but professional.

Saein played with her curls. "To get your hair this curly, you could try reincarnating as a Firni... No, wait, don't try that, at least not anytime soon. You look great as you are and I'd like to see you many more times before you try the reincarnation thing." Wait, this was getting dangerously close to flirting. Bad idea. If Minn didn't like that sort of attention from a woman, things would get weird, and if she did like it, things would get VERY weird because of the touch issue. Saein decided to leave her full glass where it was, she didn't think she was anything close to drunk but better safe than sorry. Also, maybe it was better to let Minn and Eddie do the talking for a bit.

She noticed Minn getting back into her straight and professional posture. Twelve years ago she had been similar to that: fresh out of two years of mandatory military service, always making sure to look professional to make a good impression... Well, right now she wasn't going to tell Minn to relax. Besides, in a way she approved of Minn wanting to be professional.

Eddie more or less just slapped their girlish conversation and told it to go elswhere when he spoke up. When Saein shook his hand, he noticed something, almost a bit 'off' about it. This immediately told him she really didn't want to shake hands, or something to that degree. Was shaking hands with other species an unpreferable thing for her to do? Was she forcing herself to and whatnot? Oddly, he had to figure out, but being the man that he was, he wasn't going to directly call her a racist or anything, but he needed to know if he was going to work with her.

He smiled. "Is there something wrong with my hand?" he asked, keeping a more pleasant tone about him. "I did wash it just a bit ago...." his gaze was on her, and wasn't going to be averted until he heard what he needed to.

So Eddie had noticed.

"Wha? No, there's nothing wrong with your hand! I'm a mechanic, I'm not afraid of a little dirt... Not that I think your hand is dirty... I mean... Aw this is awkward. It's nothing personal, touching the skin of other species feels weird to me, is all. Most Firni have that problem. I hate it." Saein meant she hated that touching other species made a part of her brain go funny, and didn't realize her words could as well mean that she hated touching other species and most of her kind were like that.

"You hate it? That's real nice!" he grumbled, unhappily. "You join a ship that was going to have multiple species and you're a racist?"

He sighed and murmered something to himself, obviously extremely displeased with how she reacted. He had no tolerance for racism or anything like that, and how she reacted gave him the impression she hated other species. He would have none of that.

Inqueta had been listening to the conversation between the pilot, cook and new mechanic. She sensed Saein nervousness with touching other people, and she even voiced it. Eddie became very displeased with her, and Inque was getting two very different feeds of emotions. She finally spoke up. "Firni," she addressed her by her race, rather than her name. She didn't know her last name, and she couldn't bring herself to call her by her first. "Pilot Ackers is right. You need to take into consideration the ship you have joined." Her voice was emotionless, and her eyes were glued on the woman's face. She blinked a few times, then turned to look at Eddie. Some of her silvery hair fell in her face, and she pushed it back with the back of her hand. "Pilot Ackers, she isn't racist. Like she said, the Firni, as a race, have a hard time touching other races. It gives them weird sensations." She glanced at Saein again. "Please, correct me if I'm wrong. I have not studied your kind in many years." She blinked a few times again, and flared the sensory glands on her temples. They shut one by one except for the top. She was trying to read the emotions near her. "I'm not trying to cause more problems, but rather solve some that would otherwise be unnecessary." Her eye brows went up slightly, and the corners of her eyes twitched upward slightly. In an instant, her face was back to it's exotic, stoic expression. What she did may have been the beginning of a smile, but she doubted anyone noticed.

"Miss Darv," she turned her attention to Minn, "I should safely be able to assume you don't know any Schael recipes. If I am wrong, I apologize. I have a few written down and if it's alright, I'd like to share them. I cannot cook, but I know you can." She tugged at her shorts, and shifted uncomfortably. She scanned the room, but kept her head still. It was impossible to know her focus wasn't on the group anymore. She couldn't see the Captain.

Minn

Racist? Minn sat straighter with her nerves picking up again. She might have groaned in annoyance if she was outside the group. She just wanted a good, easy time with everyone. Why couldn't everyone get along?

Inqueta approached, addressing the mechanic and agreeing with Eddie. She then brought up food and Minn smiled. "Recipes would help immensely," she said, wondering what sort of food Schael ate. She had made plenty of specialty dishes before, most of them she had never even heard of and it had been her first time preparing them, yet the customers were satisfied, asking for more. Confident she could pull off anything Inqueta had to show, she smiled brighter.

Eddie only raised an eyebrow as the Schael decided to join in. She was even supporting him, for the most part. As she finished and mentioned that Firini as a race disliked touching other races due to whatever reason, he could only think of how redundant that information was: He already knew this, and didn't mind it one bit. He grinned rather widely before letting out a hearty laugh and then explaining himself.

"I know she isn't racist, and only a fool would assume that just because touching others wasn't a preferred action," he informed. "However, I find myself in a rather bored mood, and I couldn't help but mess with her," he laughed again, looking at inqueta. "I guess I should be an actor, if I hid my true feelings that well,"

He then shifted back to Saein, with a bigger smile on his face. "Don't worry, I don't believe you to be racist in the slightest. I've been around most kinds of aliens, and have actually bothered to inform myself on them, so I understand" he sighed. "But yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of touching either, beyond a handshake,"

Once more, he turned his body, this time just outwards towards wherever and addressed the group before him. "Yeah... don't take me seriously too much, if you want to remain sane at least,"

Inqueta listened to what Eddie had said. He was laughing, and saying something about being bored. She felt bored as well. He had done a very good job at hiding his feelings, although, she wasn't sure if he was just trying to cover up his annoyance. She decided that it didn't really matter in the long run, and pushed the conversation away. Arc made her way over, and picked up on the joking. Inqueta wasn't very amused. She understood they were joking, but it still made her uneasy that they were saying they shouldn't listen to a thing Eddie says. When Arc addressed her, Inque put her focus on the human girl. "Equally." She said and inclined her head slightly. She opened the slits in her nose and took a deep breath in, closing them once more. "It's quite crowded in here. I think I'm going to stretch my legs before we get settled onto the ship. She turned away from the group and slowly, yet deliberately walked towards the door. She still didn't see the captain, and now that she though about it, the second in command wasn't to be seen either. They must have been getting the rest of the crew up, or prepping the ship.
