Reith

"Everyone has their demons."

0 · 284 views · located in Delegate Universe: Sequoia 2032

a character in “The Northern Delegates: Apocalypse”, as played by VitaminHeart

Description

Image
Name: Officially down as 'Reith Arian' however she hasn't used that surname in many years, and prefers to go down simply as 'Rei' nowadays.

Species: Demon, Invidia subspecies, also referred to as an Envy Demon or a Fleshcrafter.

Demons, or at least those that inhabit corporeal forms are split into seven main categories, each stemming from a major demon that represents one of the seven failings of soul-bearers. Rei is the progeny of The Leviathan, the cardinal demon of Envy and the wicked intent behind the blight...however her kind, the Invidia Demons, or Bloodline of Leviathan, are thought to have been wiped out many years previous, with Rei the only pure specimen left. This is due to the widespread cull that was initiated by Byron, a former leader of the Delegates, during his reign. He had operatives dispatched to wipe them out.

As a result, Rei is one of the only pure specimens of the Invidia bloodline on record in the present time.

Gender: Female
Age:
Relationships: Partner to Shisou, though she has not seen him since the Reckoning.
Mother of Kato
Former Titles:
Current Titles: Member of Sequoia Council

Rei will also often work in research and in medical due to the nature of her ability. She is often charged in dealing with diseases or toxicity related problems as she can often draw such things into her and her powers will process them into something harmless. It also allows her to deal with more complex injuries that the average healer might struggle with, as Rei can consciously direct it to 'work around' things. This is useful, though conventional emdicine or healing tends to be preferable as Rei's powers often have side effects, such as causing pain, emotional distress, and vivid nightmares due to its infernal source.

She has also been known to use her powers to manufacture blood in times of shortage, both for use in transfusions and in order to feed the vampire populous.

Abilities:

Fleshcraft -

Rei's demonic powers are concerned with living things, and as such she has the power to alter and synthesize living tissue. This makes her quite capable in dealing with injuries, extracting venom, and combating sicknesses....and Rei often uses the power in this way. However it is, at its heart a sinister influence. Rei is able to alter herself to adapt to situations..changing shape and altering traits about herself..and potentially others, but the visceral nature of the more dramatic changes means that most people would be ill-equipped to survive them. Rei herself is a full-blooded demon and as a result is naturally made to be able to withstand them. In fact her body seeks to constantly adapt to danger and things that harm her.

Leviathan's growth in influence has resulted in Rei's ability only becoming greater as the years have passed. She has found her own essence to be like a virus, able to convert animal tissue into itself, meaning she thinks she can, effectively, convert living things into additional fuel for her transformations. She tends to avoid such things though. Rei feels she's caused sufficient trouble with her abilities that she does not need to delve deeper into what they might be able to do....

Flaws:

- Rei's abilities have some kind of intent of their own, and this can mess with Rei's mind, and has at times in her life made her mentally unstable. She sometimes has a hard time distinguishing the fleshcraft's intentions from her own. After her re-appearance she gained a better handle on it, but Rei still struggles at times and refrains from serious combat if she can for that reason, because when she does her abilities can begin to effect her mental state, and she finds it hard to get it under control. Fortunately, Rei usually has other people round to pick up on when she's acting off and stop things getting out of hand.

-Rei's ability to recover her shape from injury is dependent on her having enough mass to fuel her changes. If enough of her cells are destroyed such as in fire she will not be able to fully regenerate after she is hurt.

-Whilst powerful in terms of abilities Rei is not very physically strong or resilient, and too much usage of her powers will tend to make her sick. Expansive usage or extremely demanding tasks can knock her down for days or even weeks.

Description: Rei, at a glance would not really give the impression of a powerful demon. In fact, she looks quite weak and sickly on first impression. She's on the short side, and very skinny and pallid looking, with dark rings around her eyes. She lacks a lot in the way of feminine curves, though it's hard to tell as she tends to wear loose-fitting clothing, seeming most at home in baggy T-shirts and cargo pants. The only thing she's particularly vain about is her hair, which grows in silver and is long and thick. Most people tend to regard her as a little spooky-looking, and Rei herself doesn't seem especially wounded by that fact. Sun does not tend to bother her seriously, but she'd not too keen on it and prefers to be inside.

Her dem on biology makes Rei quite a bit different from most. Her powers encompass her whole system and are a vital part of how she can function. If she is harmed her powers will try to repair the injury, and will also respond automatically to threats....though they tend to be rather overzealous and will often attack people attempting to help...something both her partner and Midnight have discovered to their own peril in the past.

Training: Rei is primarily self-taught, as she is one of the view with such bizarre abilities, she was really the only one who COULD teach herself. As such she spent much of her younger years poring over biology text books alone in her small, dark apartment, and trying to teach herself to do different things. Her powers will defend her by themselves, but she spent a lot of her time learning how to do less destructive things.

History:

Rei first appeared to the Delegates as an angry, bitter, vengeful young woman filled with a resentment towards them for the fate of her kind. She set out to work with some contracted by the Exsanguis to try and sabotage the organization, but she was found and captured by Shisou, a vampire and operative from Midnight's team...and upon seeing this resentful and hostile young demon in their captivity, Shisou did something Rei had never expected, something that changed her path forever. He was kind to her. He brought her to the HQ, showed her around, made pancakes with her in the kitchen, and managed to chip away her initial hatred and venom and show her for what she really was, a young woman who was confused and angry and grief-stricken. When she realized that the Delegates weren't some faceless, soulless assassins, her attitude softened a great deal, a feeling that had her admit the plot against the organization...something that then saw her nearly killed by an agent of theExsanguis. The Delegates came to her aid then, and she remained with them after that. Her and Shisou began to grow close.

However, the attack had successfully planted a seed of fear and paranoia in Rei. Over the years it began to grow inside her and she sought to increase her abilities in order to protect herself. Indeed she became powerful, but the influence of her abilities drove her to madness. She became a monster, and was eventually, and regretfully, put down by Oren.

That proved to not be the end of her story however, as the demon was restored by her patron, Leviathan. For Leviathan wished something from her. To have a child. It was not long after her return that Rei had Kato, her daughter, with Shisou, and the three settled into a happy family. But, this did not last. Shisou disappeared into the floating city, and the creatures came for the HQ.

Rei became cut off from others during the attack, and became set upon by large numbers of Specters, with only her and Kato within reach. And Rei annihilated them. After the attack ceased the demon and her child did not initially appear and were at first thought to be among the dead. Until someone heard a baby crying in the lower levels and discovered a large area, littered with pieces of Spectres, on the walls, ceilings and floor, and an unconscious Reith lying in a corner with Kat in her arms. Whilst she awoke a little after she was brought outside, Rei had little memory of exactly what had transpired, but decided she'd rather not experience it again.

Personality:

Rei could be described as a rather complicated individual, based on the fact that she has intended to kill most of the people she now considers to be friends at least twice, and possibly more. Much of her life has been defined by the insidious, insane drive of her demon aspect to destroy and consume...and she has to struggle to ensure that it does not control her again.

And indeed controlling the nasty urges of a demon instinct to harm is the reason why most people outside of the delegate group would have no idea about her dark background. Rei appears to most as quiet, self-deprecating and generally quite pleasant, if rather spooky and morbid at times. A lot of stuff that would creep out others seems to just wash over the woman and something that unnerves people a fair bit.

Rei carries a lot of guilt with her about the blight and the fate of all those who met their ends when Garrett and Helena attacked. However in the immediate following Rei held herself together very well, almost as a way of making up for her own past issues. Whilst the love of her life had disappeared and his fate left uncertain, she still had her child...which was more than some could say. As a result she did her best to be together and thinking practically throughout the worst parts of the aftermath, in understanding that someone had to be.

(Past.)

Oren raised a dark slender eyebrow at the offer of a cookie, that she was being offered such a thing.
"Don't be silly Midnight, everyone knows I exist only on human, blood black coffee and bitchiness." she responded as she stepped past.
"And possibly the souls of people who come into my lab without permission, or at least that was what your granddaughter looked like she suspected when she walked in."-

The vampress set some papers down and turned toward the werewolf woman, listening with her usual stony expression as Midnight recounted what she had been experiencing. Oren was quite hard to read most of the time (unless she was displeased, at which point she made sure everyone in the vicinity was aware of it) and she showed little emotional reaction. Still, the prediction was true enough.

"Got it in one." the researcher replied
"Get moving."

(Present.)

Oren, in her own, dark and spooky way, had made some effort to accommodate as far as the examination room in the laboratory went. That was, it was relatively free from jars of Specter heads and was comparatively light, albeit still gloomy compared to the outside. She was a vampire after all. She'd be happy to carry on working in total darkness, but some of the less...nocturnal inhabitants might be a little unsettled by the whole thing.

Oren had opted to run a few standard tests to make sure she wasn't suffering any health problems. Werewolf types usually had constitutions of steel and it was rare anything could get past their immune systems, but Oren could still remember the werewolf plague of about eighteen years ago that had claimed plenty of lives and had almost taken Dinah and Hunter. When Miss Tarzan had nearly ripped her head off and the Neverwinter boy had smashed her door. She didn't want another outbreak. She didn't want anymore werewolves throwing up on her shoes.

"So, waiting to see if you're certifiable yet." Oren remarked drily to the leader as she shook a sample of blood in a glass vial.
"Still, it's not as if it'd be home if someone isn't going crazy...someone has to do it since-"

She cut herself off in a rare moment of self-censoring. Oren was an utterly insensitive person, but she had enough sense to know what was permissible under 'bitch Oren' standards and what was seriously pushing it. Joking about dead kids was pushing it.

She had decided not to speak with one of her colleagues, Art, about the whole thing. Arthur, better known as Art, was a doctor, and having been bitten by a vampire at some time in the nineteenth century, had gathered a fair amount of knowledge on things. On the other hand, he and the hungarian vampress had been engaged in some degree of scientific rivalry that made them a little possessive over their cases. Besides, Art was a little less discreet about dealing with things. Oren very much kept what went on to herself. Mostly because she had no interest in talking to most people. She spoke to Midnight and had grudgingly grown to tolerate Rei wandering around her lab talking nonsense and occasionally knocking her sample jars over.

A crash. Sounds of splintering glass.
"Uh...sorry Oren."

Speak of the devil.
Maybe literally.

The woman gave a deep sigh, one that only decades of being mildly irriated at everyone could create.
"Come in Rei. I have some things to deal with. And in the name of all that is holy don't touch anything."

The skinny, silver-haired demon made her way into the room, a little surprised by who she found there.
"Oh, hey Midnight, everything okay?" she asked, sinking her hands into the pockets of her black coat in order to avoid touching anything, aware of the vampress's gaze burning into her accusingly like a hunting owl from across the room as she returned to the blood sample.

Oren stood looking at a slide, her expression bearing the tinge of irritability she always got when she couldn't completely explain things away.

"You going batshit is certainly a possibility." she responded bitterly.
"Though things being as they are I can never totally rule out, what's the term? Ah yes, quantum fuckery. There may be quantum fuckery afoot as it always seems to follow you around everywhere like a hungry dog. And you know I have no experience regarding things when they stop making scientific sense. I would say go and talk to the Fox boy but he's pissed off to go find himself or whatever angsty bullshit was involved there. You would hardly be the first to start having strange visions of things."

Though admittedly they hadn't really worked out for people before, Oren thought. Last person in the Delegates to have weird visions ended up bringing about the apocalypse.

Rei, who'd been hanging around, both listening in and trying not to tough anything, looked over.
"So what do we do?"

"I have to finish some tests just to rule everything out. Midnight, if things change at all I'd appreciate you reporting it to me. Rei, I'd also appreciate if you kept an eye on things whilst you do...whatever the fuck it is you do when you're not ruining my possessions, since while Midnight is well aware of the difference between real and not now, we have no idea if it would stay that way and you should let me know if she starts claiming she's Napoleon or whatever. The last Delegate leader had enough batshit insanity to last a lifetime so let's make sure the current one stays in working order, clear?"

----

"So why have you been sucking so much lately?"

The question caused Hari to glance up from the sandwich he was eating and look over toward Kato.

With Annita and Chris taking care of some things to do with the newbie, the two were left more or less to themselves, and Hari had helped Kat sort through some of the recon gear before they'd decided to take their lunch break up in the canopy, trying not to drop anything onto those walking the streets below.

"I'm hurt Kato, hurt and betrayed." the young man responded with some theatrical offence.

"I'm basically your sister Neverwinter, I'm allowed to say that kind of thing. Long as it's with good intent behind it. Seriously why isn't your head in things lately? It's kinda embarrassing. You got a whole line of viking ancestors looking pissed at you. What exactly is the problem? "

"You're going to laugh at me if I tell you, so you can go to hell." Hari chuckled, well aware of her attitude when it came down to training. He was pretty sure a Specter could gnaw Kat's arm off and she'd still make training, and probably try and use the blood trail she was leaving to trip people in foot races.

"No, seriously. I promise I won't make fun of you. Not even a little bit. Even if it's funny."

Hari sighed.
"Look, it's stupid, but I've been having these dreams lately..."

He cast a glance over as Kat was trying desperately to stop herself from making a joke.

"...nightmares. Recurring ones. About darkness, and water, and screaming, and big green eyes....I dunno..it's hard to really explain why they're so bad it's just..."

Hari looked round to find that Kato had stopped smiling completely and was now watching him wide-eyed.

"...not just me then?" the young Neverwinter asked, and the girl slowly shook her head.

He wasn't, however sure if this made him feel better, or a lot worse.
