Description

The Septem Cardinalis, Seven Devils, or Seven Deadly Sins are seven ancient and incredibly powerful demon siblings. Their disdain for other creatures and antipathy towards the divine entities is surpassed only by their hostility toward each other.

The Seven are eternally at war with one another, each seeking to eventually consume their six siblings and absorb their power. They scheme and sabotage and form alliances. They plot each others demise. They envision their eventual goal, becoming a demon greater than any other, and laying waste to everything. And they engage in petty, spiteful games.

The Seven do not feel any love. Not in any way that a physical creature would understand it. In fact the whole idea of this connection that 'soul-bearers' feel seems to baffle them. Some may take interest in soul-bearing creatures physically, some may wish to own them, keep them or have power over them, but these are all tied only to their own selfish desires, and have no concern for the welfare of the object of these intentions. And these intentions are generally fulfilled by their place in the universe, taking the souls of those rejected passage into the next world.

They lay claim on the souls of those who are considered irredeemable, whose crimes are seen as too great. They consume these souls to increase their own power. As such, it is not unheard of for members of the Seven to dispatch assassins to eliminate extremely evil people that fall under their remit. In this sense, the selfish desires of the demons feeds into maintaining overall balance in the world. The destruction of many great sinners by the organization has meant that the Seven have rarely interfered with the Delegate operations, however one in particular still has unfinished business with the Delegates.

The Seven have a very uneasy relationship with the gods. The tend to regard them with a degree of resentment, however they refrain from direct assault on them by their own volition, as they agree amongst themselves that they would only war with the gods when they were finished with one another. They have struck an accord not to direct an assault on a god or goddess until the time comes for the all out battle between them. This doesn't mean they are at all gracious toward the divine, and will happily indirectly ruin their schemes out of pettiness. They will however negotiate with them at times, if it suits them. Most will not trust a demon's word. They are incredibly skilled at twisting people's words or manipulating individuals into giving information or making deals that serves them. Ultimately the Seven serve only their own wants.

ImageEnvy- Leviathan

The Leviathan is the embodiment of the sin of envy and want, and governs life and fleshcraft, as well as sacrilege. Its animal is a serpent or dragon. It is associated with water and storms at sea. It is also something of an oddity among the Seven, in that it has very very few demons working in its service, no cult followings and organized worship.

This is both because the Invidia Bloodline, better known as the Fleshcrafters, were nearly all wiped out.

Once, long ago, two Leviathans existed, a pair, potentially able to breed. This was however during the age when the gods had been creating the first of the immortals and, upon seeing the power of these demons, many united in order to slay one of them, so as no more of its kind could ever exist. In response, the remaining Leviathan created the Fleshcrafters, and inset its demonic influence into their very genes. It told the gods that if they would deny it its own offspring then its creations would spread their tainted blood through the family lines of as many of the divine lineages as they possibly could, until every god and goddess' progeny was tainted with demonic corruption.

And for a long time, its plan worked. Fleshcrafters thrived in the world and mixed with other immortals, spreading the bloodline of Leviathan. That was until Byron turned on them. They were too numerous, too powerful, too immune to divine powers. They had to be destroyed. As such, they were covertly annihilated, crimes pinned on them and their communities. Eventually only a single pure-blooded Invidia Demon remained.

This has not stopped Leviathan, but only made the creature more crafty. It ensured that Reith, its one pure specimen, ended up with the Delegates, who would both preserve her and allow it to taint the blood of other families. Upon managing to get its influence into Odin's chosen, and the son of one of Nyx's progeny, it began to set its sights on carrying out more ambitious plans.

People summon Leviathan primarily to heal illness or bring back those who have died, as Leviathan's powers focus on life. This is something it only rarely tends to do however, or does only in exchange for a significant sacrifice. Leviathan is also quite keen on gathering souls, even those that do not strictly fit into its remit, which it devours. It appears as a strangely beautiful humanoid with silver hair, pale skin and glowing, green reptilian eyes. Its hands are distinctly claw-like and its canne teeth pointed. Its true form exists in another realm entirely, and the sight of it would supposedly drive soul-bearing beings to insanity, though it has been said to be serpent or dragon-like.

ImageSloth - Belphegor

Belphegor, principally known as Bel, is the embodiment of sloth, and governs death and decay, as well as knowledge and discovery. Her animal is the spider. She is associated with darkness and crypts. Among the Seven she is seen as a comparatively feeble demon, but skilled in deception. Once allied with Mammon she betrayed it and allied with Gluttony's aspect to try and wipe the demon of Greed out, but was prevented by timely intervention from The Leviathan. As such, Bel hates Leviathan and opposes it whenever she gets the chance.

Summoning Bel can bring about the acquisition of occult knowledge or answers to questions. Bel is, however an avid collector of souls, and will often ask for them in exchange, and not always the soul of the summoner.

Bel takes the form of a lightly-built young woman, seeming stared and sick-looking, with greyish skin and limp, dakr hair. Her eyes are dark. She seems covered in dust and webs, and moves in the fast, eratic manner not unlike a spider.

Avarice - Mammon

Mammon is the embodiment of material greed and governs earth and industry as well as riches. Its animal is a jackal. Mammon is one of the more 'laid-back' demons of the Seven, as its own cults flourish in a materialistic modern world. It has allied with The Leviathan for some years.

Gluttony

Ally of Bel, Gluttony doesn't really conform to the 'fat' stereotype associated with its aspect. Gluttony is instead a voracious predator, and as such a number of werewolf-based cults do dedicate themselves to deals with it. Legend also has it that Gluttony's Curse is what causes bloodlust in vampires, though this may simply be one of the many lies the demons surround themselves with.
