██████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████
Ryker had things tough, much tougher than a man his age should have ever dealt with. At his age he should be enjoying life, going out with girls and getting his own life under control. But instead he had to do things he not ever thought himself to do for the protection of his own family. Ryker took the death of his own father much rougher than either of his younger siblings. He was close to his father, he looked up to him and always wanted to be the man his father was. But when John passed, he was forced into a position he was never ready for. At the young age of seventeen he got a job as a blacksmith in order to care for his family. His mother grew deathly ill within the next few months, causing her to be at bed-rest until it was time for her to venture into the next chapter of her existence.

Now Ryker stood at the center of the town with the other hundred townsfolk listening to an announcement from Queen Cassandra. Her daughter, Princess Genevieve went missing and she had been gone for a matter of three days at this moment. In return of the princess being found, Queen Cassandra was offering up a huge reward, one big enough to bring Ryker's entire family out of poverty, enough to get his mother a good doctor along with being able to live the life his father always wanted for his family. At this moment he promised himself he would do whatever he could to bring the princess back to the castle in order to claim that reward even if he had to forcefully drag the princess along behind him to do so.

The male tracked his way back towards his home and told his mother and siblings what he was doing and left the oldest, Gabriel in charge. Sure, he was only fifteen but Ryker was only two years older than he was when he took charge of the household when their father passed. "Don't worry, I will be back. Take care of Mom and Peyton. They need you. If you need anything go to Gerald, he said he would help out the best he can if you run into any problems." Ryker explained to the small fifteen year old before reaching down to his bag of food and supplies and turned towards the door of their small home and began to look around town.

Ryker doubted that Genevieve would be stupid enough to hide out in town but then again he could be wrong. Better to look and not find her than not to look at all. A couple hours went by before he decided it was time to venture off into the forest. He sighed as he glanced into the layers of trees before tilting his head up towards the sky. It was beginning to get dark but he had to continue on. If she is lost in these woods that would be the stupidest thing a woman has ever done, he thought to himself as he took his first steps into the trees that seemed to go on for an eternity.

As the hours passed on, the colder it seemed to get. Finally Ryker began to feel himself going numb and becoming exhausted so he thought it would be best to set up camp and continue on in the morning. This continued on for the next couple of days, the princess had now been missing for about a week. Ryker was awoken in the middle of the night hearing the sounds of a female struggling and men shouting. The male sprinted to his feet and immediately ran towards the sound. Once he came upon the source of the horrid sounds he spotted her. The woman definitely didn't look like she grew up in a castle, she looked as if she lived under a bridge for the duration of her life. She was covered head to toe in dirt, her hair was knotted up and that blonde shine was no longer visible, there were even signs of injuries along her body. Thankfully nothing major.

Ryker stepped closer to the group of men who circled around Genevieve. These men had her tied to a tree, some of them even making gruesome, disturbing comments to her. He quietly circled around the group of men and hid behind a tree before digging in his bag for his gun. He made sure to aim away from the princess just in case anyone were to get hit. He fired a couple shots in their direction, sending the men in a panic. "Show yourself!" the man who seemed to be the leader shouted out.

Ryker chuckled a bit and spoke, keeping himself hidden, "Leave the princess and run if you'd like your lives to be spared." Another warning shot was fired, hitting one of the men in the leg before the others darted off leaving both the princess and the injured to fend for themselves. Finally Ryker revealed himself but kept his gun handy. He silently stepped over to the princess and untied her from the tree, while keeping the gun pointed to the injured bandit. The male tossed his bag over towards him, "There are bandages in there, take care of your leg," he stated before returning his attention back to the princess. "You're coming with me."

Evie had about one day head start before the reward was placed on her head. The entire kingdom was worked up into a frenzy with everyone clamoring to try and find her in order to receive the money. When Evie heard whispers of how much her mother had offered up, it was a bit of a shock. She knew Queen Cassandra would do something to try and get her back, but she had no idea her mother was willing to part with so much.

Of course Evie knew that if the marriage contract was signed, her mother's wealth would increase tenfold. The reward would look like pauper's change compared to what she'd gain if Evie was married.

Evie was determined to not be found. As soon as she heard that everyone and their dog was looking for her, she retreated to the dense woods that lay at the edge of the kingdom. It separated the Coral Kingdom from their neighbor, the Violet Kingdom. Evie was confident if she could just cross the border the man hunt would lessen and she would have a chance.

Being on the run was more difficult than she had expected it to be. There was nowhere to bathe properly (the river was too cold for her taste), and she realized she had to ration her food. She had no idea how to survive off of the land, although she did find a wild blackberry bush her third day gone.

It had been nearly a week that she had been gone when she was ambushed by a group of filthy men. She had left Goliath, her faithful and gargantuan companion, by the river before retreating further into the forest to see if she could locate any more wild berries. The food she had taken with her had run out the day before. Evie's body ached from sleeping on the ground, her hair was a mess, her face was dirty, and her stomach had hunger pains for the first time in her life. All in all she was miserable and too consumed with her task that she didn't notice her surroundings. She didn't notice the men closing in around her.

The men had been tracking her for two days and had decided to wait until she had left the security of her massive horse. They had heard stories of the war trained horses kept in the palace stable. Whether they were true or not, they weren't about to find out. They were relieved when she separated from her horse and followed her until she was very much isolated.

"Wha's a purty thing like you doin' all the way out 'ere?" the voice caused Evie to jump. She whipped around and froze at the sight of the four men approaching her.

"I think she's lost." Another chuckled darkly.

Evie had a wide look of panic in both of her eyes. There were four of them. They looked worse than she did. Their teeth were yellow, their clothes were caked in dirt. They looked thin as if none of them had had a solid meal in weeks. She didn't doubt their strength though, especially because of their numbers.

Her eyes flicked around the space as they were fanning out around her. She was losing her chance to get away. Without a second thought she whirled around and shot into the dark.

It took only a couple of feet for one of the men to overtake her and tackle her to the ground. Evie screamed and beat her fists against his back as he picked her up as though she were nothing more than a sack of potatoes. She tried kicking and hitting but it didn't seem to do anything.

"Le's take 'er back to camp. It seemed he was in charge.

Evie screamed the whole way there though she doubted anyone would hear her. They soon arrived. There was a low fire going. She was dumped on the ground next to a tree. Before she could get to her feet they were tying her to the tree making it impossible for her to escape.

"Unhand me, this instant you imbeciles!" she shouted. "You have no right to put your hands on me. Release me at once!" The authority was clear in her voice, but there was fear laced below her tone.

"Do you not realize the price on your head? We'll be rich men once we've returned you. We ain't 'bout to let you go." One spoke up missing several teeth and he eyed her in a way that made her skin crawl. "You know, they never said we could have any fun with her."The man spoke up again and this time Evie screamed as if they were slicing through her skin.

"Shut the bitch up!" their leader was covering his ears and soon a filthy rag was stuffed into her mouth. The taste and stench from the cloth nearly made her throw up. She continued to scream but it was muffled.

The toothless man was eyeing her and began to say things to her that was sending spikes of fear down her back. He got a little too close, crouched down, and Evie managed to kick him wear it counted. He rolled to the side howling and the other men laughed at him.

The laughing stopped abruptly as shots rang into the night. Evie stopped her struggle and was as still as a mouse being stalked by a cat. Now there was another party to deal with. Her stomach sank. She was starting to regret her decision of leaving the safety of the palace.

More shots rang out. The toothless man that she had kicked was caught in the leg. The bandits scattered like the filthy cockroaches they were.

She narrowed her eyes as a man stepped from behind the tree and approached. He wasn't nearly as filthy as the bandits, but it was obvious he was extremely poor. He crossed the distance, tossed some bandages to the injured man, before approaching the tree. He untied her and she removed the rancid gag in her mouth. For a moment she tried to spit and clear the horrible taste from her mouth. She looked up when he said she was coming with him.

Evie got to her feet, brushed herself off, before she walked over to the toothless man who was groaning. She stomped on his foot sending a yowl through the night. She turned to look at her rescuer, who seemed just as keen to cash in on her.

"Like hell I am." She swore as she eyed him, even laughing. Even though he had a gun he seemed less of a threat than the bandits did. He seemed almost reasonable. She knew he wouldn't shoot her, so she began to walk away from him. Her mind started to trace back to where she had left Goliath. She needed to get to him and made a mental note to not stray from the beast again.

"Like hell I am." Now, there was no denying how relieved he was to hear those words slip from the lips of the oh so fragile porcelain doll her parents always described her as. It just gave her more of a reality to her, made her seem more normal than he ever believed her out to be. Sure the prissiness of her attitude was spot on, but he not once ever believed he would hear a fair woman such as herself have such foul language. Even the small laugh that followed her words tossed him into a bit of shock. Needless to say though, he wasn't just going to allow her to continue walking away.

Ryker let out a sigh and stepped up to her, forcing himself in front of her so she would be cut off her path. "Where are you going?" he questioned. Whatever it was, stupidity or courage, he admired it. Though he was leaning more towards stupidity. She wanted to continue running away from the life she grew up in even after all the hell she endured with these men. Genevieve had no idea of the dangers that lurked in this forest. There were things much more dangerous than a band of thieves and no matter how much she would like to deny it, he knew she would be safer at his side and returning back to the castle.

"We can do this the easy way or the hard way. Your choice." Now he knew he wasn't going to hurt the princess, but he did have other means of getting her to go with him that didn't cause any harm to her. If he had to, that's the route he was willing to go. It wasn't until now that he realized he had two reasons to take her back home. The money and so she would be safe behind the walls of the castle. No woman should be lurking through the woods alone, no matter how much they strived to prove themselves.

Evie was surprised when he stepped in front of her to block her path. She crossed her dirty and scratched arms in front of her and tapped her foot in annoyance. "I'm getting as far away from this place as possible, and if you want your family jewels intact," she wasn't nearly as shy as he might have expected as her eyes trailed down to a certain area. "You won't stand in my way." She finished the threat. Evie was tired of people dictating her life. She wasn't about to let this peasant decide if she was going home.

They were standing with only about a foot of space between them. He was tall, and broad in the shoulders. Even though it was dark she could make the outline of his face to be one considered handsome. He also seemed to have more smarts about him than the bandits did. She realized it was going to be more difficult to try and elude him than four bandits, and she had done a terrible job with them.

She mulled his words over before relaxing. A rather sweet look came upon her face. She reached out and touched his bicep making a mental note that he was decently strong.

"We'll do it the easy way, it's clear I'm no match for you." She pouted as she touched his other arm. "But only if you'll grant one request. You see, my poor pony was left behind and I'm so afraid to leave him here in the dark. If you take me home, I don't think he'll know how to make it home on his own." Her voice was full of innocence as she had trailed her finger down his bare arm. "Please, then it's the easy way." The pout was back.

Evie knew she wasn't a match for this man, but she also knew this man was no match for Goliath. If she could get to her warhorse then she'd be able to get away. Goliath was fiercely protective and had several commands that would come in useful.

The more time Ryker spent with the princess the more surprised he became at the way she was defending and presenting herself towards him. Honestly he was a bit relieved to know she was willing to do whatever it took to defend her opinion of things but as much as he hated putting her in this situation he needed to get her home.

The spark in her blue eyes told him more about her, in ways that could only be found if you were to really take a look at someone. She was passionate about leaving the castle and starting her own life outside the walls of the secluded kingdom. But then she went on to make some sort of deal with her. Ryker had a feeling there was something more to it but he decided to go along with it. "Alright. I'll help you find your horse," that was all he needed to say. Ryker wasn't going to let on that he believed she was playing him because to be honest, he wasn't sure. The best thing for him to do is play this out and see where it all leads.

The male cleared his throat and gestured for her to continue in the direction she was headed to start looking for her horse. As they began walking through the forest, he figured he mind as well fill the silence with some sort of small conversation. "If you don't mind me asking, what is it about the castle that forced you to run away?" This has bugged the male for a while now. She had everything she ever needed, food, clothes, a place to rest her head and no fear that she would lose it all at any second. She never had to work for anything she got, she had it easy. Sure there was much more to it that Ryker didn't know, but standing from the outside he always wondered.

A glint filled Evie's eye as he agreed to help her find her horse. This wasn't too bad of a deal. She didn't have to wander through the dark woods alone and risk getting jumped by another set of bandits, and when they got to Goliath she'd be able to get away from this man. "Even if I explained to you why, I don't think you'd understand." She responded as she stepped over a large root bulging out of the ground. She knew what people thought of her. She had heard the whispers in the castle when the servants thought she wasn't around or wasn't listening. Why would this man understand any better than the people who served her?

Evie didn't mind the silence, it was something that she was used to. An owl hooted in the distance. She could heard the stream now and knew that they were getting close. She picked up her pace. "We're almost there! He should be close by." She picked up her dirty skirts and moved with grace that reflected her upbringing. Even with the dark she didn't stumble over the rocks or roots that marred the forest floor.

The stream was louder and Evie came to a stop. She waited and listened before she let out a high and clear whistle. It echoed through the trees. She held still knowing Goliath would respond to the call. It didn't take too long before there was the sound of a large form making it's way through the trees.

A large shape finally broke through the underbrush and approached. To say Goliath was a large horse was an understatement. Evie's head didn't quite reach his shoulders. The black horse had been dubbed Demon by the stable boys as he had quite a nasty temperament to match his size. Goliath spotted his mistress and quickly position himself between her and the man she was with. Evie grabbed hold of the saddle and managed to hoist herself up. It was always a difficult task to mount him without a boost, but the past week she had made it work. Once she was astride she gathered the reigns and turned Goliath away from the man.

"Thank you for helping me find my pony," she mocked. "But I'm not going back. There is no life for me there." Goliath was shifting from hoof to hoof waiting for the cue to take off.

"Even if I explained to you why, I don't think you'd understand." She was right. There was no way Ryker would ever understand her reasons for leaving her life behind. He was never able to experience anything she had in her lifetime. After all, Ryker was a peasant, poor, and trying his best to survive on the lands of the kingdom that was slowly beginning to rot all around them. The male let out a soft sigh and continued through the forest with her.

The second the stream was able to be heard in the distance, the princess began to pick up her pace, practically running. "We're almost there! He should be close by." Ryker immediately followed behind her and picked up his own pace so he could keep up with her. Though he couldn't keep himself from cursing beneath his breath. "Damn woman. Making this a lot more difficult than it should be," he mumbled very quietly to himself so the blonde wouldn't hear.

As she came to an abrupt stop Ryker followed in suit just a couple feet behind her. A piercing whistle sounded through the forest as she called for her beloved Goliath. The sound of hooves became louder with every stride closer the huge horse got. Once the horse made himself known, he placed himself between Ryker and the princess as if he were protecting her. He immediately had a bad feeling about the next events that would transpire, but there was no way in hell he was going to be stupid enough to make her get off that horse. Goliath definitely kept true to his name.

The following words from the princess proved his conclusions to be correct, "Thank you for helping me find my pony. But I'm not going back. There is no life for me there." And she was gone. There was nothing he could do or say about it at the moment. Once again he had to go out searching for the princess in hopes to bring her back to the castle and claim his reward.

Ryker slid his hands into his pockets and glanced down at the ground as he sluggishly began to follow the horse tracks through the forest, hoping that they would lead him back to the princess. This is going to be a long day, he thought to himself.
