Anything Else?

Nan is always tying to come up with a cure for the Ouchies and often tries her ideas out on willing patients. Although no one else knows, she cured a cat of Ouchies once before and continues testing to see if her antidote is safe for humans, so far, it isn't.

She has a Russian Blue cat named Watson.

Considering the circumstances, Nan was rather well off. She traveled around to different small villages and helped people along the way. Most of the time she was treated like her mother had been when she was a doctor, and this made Nan more comfortable with the thought of being near infected people. The village that she had come to for the week was kind and the people had given her shelter in the main town hall. This town seemed sicker than the others, and she had been called back often. The Ouchies liked this place, it was colder here, and Nan had worn a sweater that night to bed.

It was early morning now, and as the sun rose Nan awoke, stretching soundlessly and yawning. Today was going to be a long day. Because the village had no special office for doctors, Nan would have to sit in the small town hall with people lined out the door and treat her patients in the back room of the building. This of course was not as sanitary as she liked her working areas to be, but she would have to make do to help these people. Watson mewed loudly, taking Nan out of her thoughts.

"I'm going, I'm going," she smiled at him. Nan lifted Watson off of her lap and stood up, surveying the area that she had to work, there was much to be done before any patients could be treated.

Nan rustled through her backpack for some clothes to wear and changed. She took a slice of bread out of the front pocket and ate it quickly, not wasting time to add any butter. She then folded her sleeping bag and put it in the back of the room with her backpack. The room was small, and the walls were painted an light blue color, good for reflecting the sunlight that was now streaming through the two windows on the back wall. There was a one chair, a table, and a couch, all white with no cushions so that Nan could work with her patients easier. She took an old shirt out from her bag and began dusting, just in case anyone was allergic and then washed her hands with the well-water from behind the building. She set out her tools and supplies on the table so that they were easy to access and then filled a bowl with water and cleaning solution, that she had in her bag, to clean them after taking care of different patients.

After tidying up the space and putting her hair in a bun, Nan cracked to her knuckles and walked to the door. She inhaled a deep breath then put her hand on the doorknob and turned. She looked out and there was a long line of people waiting for her, some coughing and groaning. Yes, this was going to be a long day.

Erik wiped a trickle of sweat the poured down his face. The heat was excruciating, but he should have been used to it by then. He gripped his metal hammer, which had a cloth around the handle so you wouldn't burn yourself, and swung one last time, throwing the last bolt right into place. The water trough he had been working on looked good. It would definitely work and be very handy. It wasn't some engineer's work, it was simple, but Erik was proud of it.

Erik dusted off his hands and stood up, admiring his work. One of the other builders walked beside him, looking like they were admiring his work too. But, their eyes darted to the corner of their eye, staring at Erik.

"There are some Legals coming down the road towards us and they don't look too cheery," he whispered, not even turning to face me. "If you look at them, be subtle."

Erik bent down at the water trough and began to clean it off. As he worked, not even bothering to look back at the other builder, he replied. "How many?"

"About five."

Erik was completely lost. Why would Legals be coming here. They hadn't done anything wrong! "Any idea why?" he whispered, his voice barely audible. He leaned back just a bit and looked at the Legal's reflection off of the metal trough. The other builder was right. They were definitely not coming for a friendly chat.

"I have no idea. This reminds me of the drug bust last year," the other builder said. Erik winced. Only a year ago, this happened to a bunch of doctors. Three of them had been making drugs that they thought would cure them from Ouchies and had been self medicating. They got in big trouble, only because it had worked for a little, but refused to share or tell anyone how to make it. They were being selfish, and for that, most doctors who were even thought to be involved, were either executed or exiled.

Suddenly, shadows covered Erik from the sun. He slowly looked up to see about three Legals surrounding him. He let out a yelp as one reached out to grab him. He rolled out of the way of their hand and slid under another's legs to escape. He bolted away fear overtaking any common sense he had. The only thought that ran through his mind was that they assumed he had drugs and were going to kill him for it.

He made it right outside a medical room where doctors treated patients. Inside was a woman, treating a long line of patients. He decided his best chance was to try and lose the Legals behind the building. But as he made a sharp turn, a bullet grazed his side, pulling open a painful looking scratch by Erik's ribs. Erik let out a groan as the world began to spin a bit. He knew that most bullets had become rusty in this day and age. He probably had some infection, maybe even an Ouchie, but he didn't care about that. In his hazed reality, he knew there was no escape.

Suddenly, a rope tied his hands behind his back. As the Legal tightened it, he snapped back to reality. He winced, because the female Legal had caught his skin. He began to get a bit mad. "I didn't do anything," he rasped. The woman nodded.

"We know. You have a clean record. That's why we need you to do us a favor..."

It was devastating, the number of people who had become ill since Nan had last been in this village. At the moment she was treating a little girl who had a ratty teddy-bear in her hands. She was shivering uncontrollably, so Nan had put a blanket over her, but the little girl still shook.

"You'll be fine," She said, smiling at the girl's pale face. "You just have a fever." She took her latex gloves off and through them on the already growing pile. Nan then led the little girl's guardian to the far end of the room. "I assume you are her brother?" She said.

"Yes.." the boy, who seemed to be about fourteen-years-old said. "Is there something wrong with her?"

Nan sighed and looked the boy in the eyes. "She has an Ouchie."

"No way," the boy said, running his hand through his hair.

"I'll give you the medication, but I can't be sure that it will help," she smiled sadly and handed the boy a bottle filled with a golden liquid. After telling the young boy to give his sister a sip every night, she ushered them out and called the next patient in. Suddenly she heard yelling and a gunshot and Nan rushed outside to see what the commotion was.

What she saw shocked her, to put it mildly. There was a young man, who seemed to be about her age, who was kneeling with his hands tied behind his back and a bullet wound on his side. A woman stood over him, and she seemed to be a Legal. Nan marched out to them.

"Excuse me, but what is all of this commotion about, I am trying to treat patients here." Nan said boldly, putting her hands on her hips.

"Are you Nan Williamson?" The woman asked and Nan nodded her head uncertainly. "Good, could you follow us please?"

Nan looked at the young man near her feet and raised an eyebrow, wondering why they had taken him as well. She turned back to the Legal, "You'll need to get another doctor at this post, and I'll need to bring my belongings," she said, her hands still on her hips.

Erik was too puzzled to even try to fight back. He wasn't in trouble, yet they had gone to the point of chasing him through the streets, almost shooting him, and tying him up? It all seemed a bit much and he didn't even know what to begin to think. But, before he could respond, a doctor walked out of her station. She began to talk to the Legal. Erik didn't bother to really listen to their conversation, but the doctor sounded annoyed.

"You'll need to get another doctor at this post, and I'll need to bring my belongings."

It was the doctor who said it, and the Legal responded by nodding. "I will escort you to your post so you can collect whatever you need. But we must move soon. The others are waiting on us."

Tons of questions blazed through Erik's head. There were more who were being taken? What was going on? Where were they going? What were they doing? Erik tried to yank apart his hands, only to hear a crack. He closed his eyes and bit his lip. He was in a horribly precarious situation.

When his eyes opened again, he noticed a female builder being taken off, escorted by the other Legals who had came to the tent. She didn't seem to be struggling. Erik guessed he had been some sort of beacon of what would happen if you struggled. He was the example, he supposed.

The Legal pulled Erik up, making him wince in pain, but the aching had much lessened in his side. He felt pretty fine, accept for just a headache. The Legal began escorting the doctor back to her office, dragging Erik behind. Erik stumbled along, his strength slowly seeming to reappear, as well as his common sense. He felt idiotic for trying to run, when he could have just talked it out. It was seeming to be working for the doctor. But, he had reason for what he had done. He just had to hope he wasn't a dead man walking in the government's book.

Nan turned back towards the town hall building and walked towards it quickly. She heard a man following her and assumed that he was dragging the young man with him. Once inside the building, Nan faced the still long line of people and sighed.

“Well," she started, rubbing her hands on her pants nervously. “It seems as though you'll all have to come back tomorrow. I'm being sent away and another doctor will take my place here for the week." A chatter arose amongst the people. “Don't worry, the new doctor will be just as efficient as I am." She smiled sadly.

As the people began to disperse and move away from the building, Nan dashed o the back room and collected her things. She put her doctor's supplies back in her bag and put the used latex gloves in a bon that she assumed was for trash that stood at the far end of the room. She then took her hair out of its bun and picked up her bag, turning to face the Legal and the tied up young man.

She walked over to the two men and looked into the face of the tied up man. She put her hand on his gunshot wound and pressed down lightly. Nan then turned to face the Legal.

"This man needs bandages and painkillers immediately," she said sternly. “I can either treat him here or in whatever transportation we are taking. However I can assure you that if the bleeding doesn't stop, he will most likely pass out."

“I'll ask the boss," the Legal mumbled and dashed out of the room, leaving Nan and the young man standing alone.

Erik stumbled beside the small hut after the doctor and the Legal, who was still dragging him along. He had to weave himself through the large crowd of sick people, who stared at him like he was some criminal. Erik tried to avoid looking them in the eye. He felt like- well, he was a prisoner of the society now. Normally, he would have never run. But, he panicked. He lost it, got scared, and just freaked out. And now all these people thought of Erik as some horrible troublemaker. One of the people even reached out and tried to poke his rib, right where his cut was. He tried to dodge out of the way, but bumped into the Legal, who gave him an angry look. Yeah, that dude was definitely sick... If people with "Ouchies" were going around poking people, maybe they should better be contained, because Erik now felt like he wanted to take a bath in hand sanitizer.

The doctor began talking to her patients, telling them how she had to go and a doctor would replace her and take sufficient care of them. The patients seemed uneasy with her being replaced. Erik figured she had to be one good doctor to have so much adoration from this many sick. But, in the society, as long as you had hope to distribute, you would always be a fan-favorite.

As the crowds dispersed, the doctor began to pack up her stuff. She still looked a tad bit uneasy about all of this, but she was handling it much better than he had. She quickly approached when she was finished packing and faced Erik. He didn't really even think about the fact she was a doctor and he was still hurt until she pressed down on his wound. Pain that he had forgotten shot back and he let out a staggering, sharp breath.

"This man needs bandages and painkillers immediately. I can either treat him here or in whatever transportation we are taking. However I can assure you that if the bleeding doesn't stop, he will most likely pass out."

The Legal seemed to agree and left, leaving the Erik and the doctor alone. If Erik had ever had an opportunity of escape, this was it. On any other day, he could outrun this girl with ease, or so he would guess, but he didn't think he could at this point. Erik had almost felt fine and he didn't even think the wound was too bad, but he didn't seem to get a say in any of this.

"I feel fine," he said hoarsely to the doctor, even though her chances of caring were small. Erik was having a very rough day with trying to talk to people. "The pain pretty much gone a minute ago. The bullet only grazed me. I'm ok," he said, trying to even add a chipper smile. His chances were slim, but what else was he to do. He had never been really against the society, but today he was having a hard time trusting anyone, especially someone trying to doctor him. He had been stinking gunned down because they needed him to do them some favor!

Nan watched the Legal rush out the door and she turned to pick up Watson. She held him in her arms for a moment and sighed, thinking about what had just happened. Why would these Legals suddenly come and want to take her somewhere? She had never broken any rules, maybe they needed her help. Besides, they had seemed quite determined to take the young man as well, and he looked innocent too.

She turned to him, ready to voice her thoughts, when he started to speak. Watson leapt out of her arms and ran to her back pack, sitting down casually next to it. Nan looked at the man as he spoke.

"I feel fine," he said hoarsely to the doctor, even though her chances of caring were small. Erik was having a very rough day with trying to talk to people. "The pain pretty much gone a minute ago. The bullet only grazed me. I'm okay," he said, trying to even add a chipper smile.

Nan raised her eyebrow at the young man. "I'm Nan by the way," she said and then crossed her arms. She saw the desperate look on his face and immediately knew what he wanted to do. "I don't know if escaping is such a good idea, I mean, you're hurt, and I don't think these people are going to hurt us... at least not anymore, they just seem desperate. I know that I haven't done anything wrong, so we have nothing to fear."

She walked over to her bag and took out a bottle of painkillers, she noticed that her supply was dwindling. Nan grabbed three pills and then took out a water bottle. She tried to untie the man's hands, and when she couldn't, she cut them with her pocket knife and handed him the painkillers. "I suppose if you still want to escape you should at least take these." She then handed him the water bottle and waited for him to take the medicine while looking out the door to see if the Legal was returning, which he wasn't yet.

"I don't know if escaping is such a good idea, I mean, you're hurt, and I don't think these people are going to hurt us... at least not anymore, they just seem desperate. I know that I haven't done anything wrong, so we have nothing to fear."

It was if the girl, who called herself Nan, had read Erik's mind. But, he had decided not to run away on his own. When she mentioned the "Nothing to fear" part, he raised an eyebrow. He didn't completely agree with that. He had not seen her around much. He didn't know where she was from, maybe she was a survivor from a different part of the world, but that would be extremely shocking if she was. The whole society would have known. But, she didn't seem to remember the drugs bust. He decided not to mention it, deciding not to scare her. She was right. They hadn't done anything wrong and they were going to show them.

After getting a bottle of pills, she came back over to him and struggled with the rope. After much frustration with trying to untie it, she pulled out a pocket-knife and cut it. His eyes widened. She had never seen anyone, but a Legal, with a knife. Nor had he seen Legals strolling around the society with guns.

"Where did you get that?" he asked, curiously. But, he shook his head. He didn't need to know. He was obviously knee deep in trouble. She handed him the bottle of pills instead and he gulped down two, not really knowing the dosage. His mom always gave him two.

A zap of pain fluttered through him. She was dead. His mother, gone. His father and brother too. All taken away. And thinking about it hurt. He wondered about this girl, Nan, if she had lost loved ones too. He wondered how alike they were and why her, him, and who knows how many others were being taken away.

"I'm Erik by the way," he said after swallowing the pills and gulping down some water to chase them. "Is the Legal coming?"

Nan had decided not to answer the man's question about her pocket knife, although it wasn't like she was breaking the law. She had told the Legals that the knife was for medical purposes, which was true when she had once had to use it in a surgery, but that was only once. Nan firmly believed that everyone should be able to defend themselves and so she carried the knife with her just in case she needed it. This was good because it had just come in handy.

Nan watched the the young man take two pills and frowned as he made an pained look. She decided not to ask what he was thinking about and instead focused on remembering the dosage of the painkillers for people of around what she assumed was his weight.

"I'm Erik by the way," he said after swallowing the pills and gulping down some water to chase them. "Is the Legal coming?"

“Well, it's nice to meet you Erik, even under these circumstances," Nan said to him and then checked out the door once again. “Yes here he comes. Oh, and take another pill, trust me, you'll want it, bullet wounds hurt."

Nan ran her fingers through her hair as the Legal entered the room. “I gave him painkillers for now, but if you need me too I can bandage him on the way to wherever we're going," she said to him.

The Legal nodded. “That will have to do, we are just clearing everything up and getting the replacement doctor here, so please follow me." At this Nan nodded and grabbed her backpack, put the bottle of pills in it after handing Erik another one, and swung it over her shoulder. She picked up Watson and looked at Erik.

“Keep the water bottle," she said.

“Well, it's nice to meet you Erik, even under these circumstances," she said, and Erik kindly smiled. After warning him that the Legal was indeed approaching, she told him that he could take one more pill.

When the Legal returned, Erik stood. The Legal immediately stared at his hands, seeing they were untied. She seemed to be wondering whether to re-tie them or not, but in only a few seconds she dropped it and began talking to Nan, who explained how she could bandage him on the way. Erik looked down at his wound, which was right by the bottom of his rib cage. It wasn't very big. The bullet hadn't got caught in him, but it had left a big mark, tearing his skin open in a straight line. He was surprised how much a small gash like that could bleed. Luckily the bleeding had slowed down and painkillers would soon take action. He would be fine soon.

"...So please follow me." the Legal instructed. Nan handed him another pill which he gulped it down easily, no water needed, but the water was lukewarm, a special rarity in this heat. He drank it anyway. Once he was done, he reached to hand her back the bottle, but she just told him to keep it.

So, they began walking, following the Legal, who didn't even bother looking the people was passed in the eyes. Erik knew it was required of her to be that way. Legals were isolated, better than everyone else, or so they were supposed to be.

As they walked, citizens stared at them in wonder and confusion. They were probably wondering what they had done. And Erik, as he looked at them, wondered about their lives. How many of them would die, just in that week? How many lives were almost done? You can't expect to live long in a world like this. Erik tried to stay positive, but everyone knew it. Soon, everyone would succumb to Ouchies.

Soon, the Legal was leading them farther and farther away from the heart of the society. And, terrified now, Erik realized where they were going. Up ahead was a gate that ordinary citizens couldn't go into. It was like the police department and government, super secret, classified area. Erik turned to Nan.

"The only citizens that go in here are ones that are in bad trouble," he whispered, unheard by the Legal. He quickly turned away and kept marching until they stopped, looking upon the towering gates. The Legal walked to a doorbell-like thing that was attached to the metal wires of the giant fence. She pushed the button and suddenly a buzzing sound came and she pulled the gate open, forcing us to walk inside. People walked around, seeming in a state of hurry. Other citizens were led to a small warehouse, seeming just as confused as they were.

Soon, the Legal caught back up with them. Erik had not even seemed to notice she had been gone for a minute or two. She smiled at them, the first time Erik had ever seen a Legal smile. Words came out almost happily, but stuck fear into Erik's heart. "Welcome to Operation Promise Land."

As the Legal led the two out of the building, Nan felt the stares. She supposed that people thought that they had broken the law or done something terrible, but she also wondered if they wished they could be her. They walked farther away from the center of the village towards the large gate near the edge of the town. Nan raised her eyebrow, she had never been this far out of this village before.

As they neared the gate, Nan saw a small boy huddled next to what appeared to be his sick mother. Nan was surprised, she hadn't seen many adults in the village. She noticed the boy was looking at her pleadingly. She smiled sadly and walked over to the boy and the woman. "Here," she said, bending down and taking out the rest of the loaf of bread that she had eaten for breakfast. "Take this." She patted the young boy on the head and walked back to Erik and the Legals.

"The only citizens that go in here are ones that are in bad trouble," he whispered, unheard by the Legal. He quickly turned away and kept marching until they stopped, looking upon the towering gates. Nan looked at Erik and nodded.

"Then it makes sense why everyone was staring," she said. They were forced inside by the Legals and Nan was surprised again by just how many people were inside the warehouse, though all of the rush made her a bit anxious. Nan looked back at the Legal, who had turned up again and froze in fear at the next phrase that she said.

"Welcome to Operation Promise Land."

Nan clenched her fists. She had heard about this project from one of the other Doctors that she had met on her journey, she had also heard about how he had been killed by Legals later that week for spilling secret information. It was a good idea, in theory, but it seemed highly dangerous, and she wanted to help as many people as she could from the Ouchies.

"You are lucky, you have been chosen to take part in this project," The Legal smiled. Nan looked at Erik with her eyes wide.

"You are lucky, you have been chosen to take part in this project," the Legal continued as if this was an everyday conversation.

"Operation Promise Land?" Erik asked, daring to confront the Legal who's mood seemed to have radically changed. He was lost. What on earth was that? He found Nan staring at him as if she recognized it, but why hadn't he heard of it. Did Doctors here more than Builders did?

"Operation Promise Land has been a goal we have tried to reach ever since we realized the trees were gone and we would all soon suffocate," the Legal explained. "It was decided that we would have suffocated long ago if all the trees had been wiped out, giving us hope that there was at least one area that the Destruction Bomb had not reached, a place were grass still grew and the sky was blue with white, puffy clouds." The Legal almost sounded like she had drifted off into a daydream. Erik was almost shocked. He knew the leaders of the Society had been hiding things, but why hide a chance for hope. He had never been into conspiracy theories, but now he was beginning to wonder.

"You, and the best of your categories, one male and one female, were chosen to partake in a journey to find this place. You will all travel together in search of this place. If you do not return in a month, we will presume you have died and will retry."

This was insane! Erik was about to protest when a man in a military like outfit, with a shirt that had the sleeves cut off of it and cargo shorts colored a snot green camouflage, approached. Erik tried to keep his gasp in, but couldn't manage to contain it. This was the male President.

Nan saw the rather lost look on Erik's face and then turned back to the Legal. She began talking about how people would begin to suffocate without many trees and plants. Nan wondered why they didn't just plant others to speed up the process of regrowth, but she decided not to voice her thoughts as the Legal kept talking. of course she had known about the plan to send people to this "Promised Land," but she did not think that she was one of the best Doctors, certainly there were others who were far more experienced than she. Nan had also never known that the group only had one month.

She was about to ask why they only had a month, and why her, and if they had communication, and a million other questions, when a man walked up beside the Legal. Nan was shocked to say the least. Why was the male president here? She thought.

"Ah, our first two travelers I assume?" he asked the Legal, smiling.

"Yes sir," she replied excitedly, saluting and stepping to the side so that the president could greet both Nan and Erik.

"As you may know, I'm one of your presidents," he said holding his hand out to Nan. "It's nice to meet you Miss.." Nan shook his hand firmly and answered.

"Doctor Nanette Williamson, sir. And I must say it's a pleasure to meet you Mister President." The man then turned to Erik and stuck out his hand again.

"And Mister.."

After chatting with the Legal and welcoming Nan, he turned to shake Erik's hand, with a polite yet strong "And Mister.." spoken in his deep, baritone voice. Erik didn't really want to shake his hand, but did anyway, not to be rude.

"Erik," he said. "Erik Web. And you might want to have a little better gun control," he said, bitterly, eyeing the Legal who didn't seem to be bothered by this. It's not like she would get in trouble for almost shooting him. Legals could do whatever they wanted to citizens as long as their conscience deemed it right. Erik wondered if Legals even had morality in them. This behavior wasn't usually like Erik, but he was confused and still a bit angry.

The President chuckled, seeming amused by his frustration. "Well, nice to meet you too," he said. "I must thank you all for your cooperation, as I am sure being brought here may have been frightening," he spoke, mainly to Nan, the one who hadn't bolted for escape.

"Sir," Erik choked out, much more politely now. "Why us?"

The President laughed. "You both displayed excellence is your workmanship. You displayed obedience and faithfulness when you believe in the cause. And the world, the survival of humanity, is resting on us. You seemed like the most prepared to help us with this challenge." Erik nodded. It was much better spoken, more detailed and much nicer, than how the Legal had explained it. But, the President hadn't answered the question.

"No, I mean, why not the Mercenaries or whatever they are? Isn't stuff like this their job?" he asked. The President shook his head, but looked puzzled on how to put it.

"This may sound harsh and horrible," he said, and Erik was almost nervous to here what he had to say, "but they're worth too much."

Erik frowned. It was very harsh. They could put citizens' lives on the line, but not their own soldiers? He didn't want to be apart of this.... not in the slightest.

“Excuse my forwardness sir, but," Nan said, crossing her arms unhappily, and wondering why she had ever been intrigued by this project. “What do you mean by ‘worth too much.' If there are no builders then we would have no way to build up our society again, and with no doctors, more and more people would be dying, even more than there already are."

The President chuckled. “Yes, yes, you two are quite right. Every job that there is contributes only to benefit society, but we especially need mercenaries here to help protect the people and keep the order. Without either of those things trying to live on is useless. Because of this fact, we have decided to send two of each of the other jobs so that we have a wide range of people participating and so that everything that needs to get examined or done can be accomplished."

“And why do we only get a month?" Nan asked, her arms still crossed.

“Well we figured that month would be enough to scope out the land and test everything that needs to be tested." The President said, still smiling.

Nan sighed, still not convinced that the President meant what he said about the mercenaries. “Well then sir, if you wouldn't mind I'd like to treat Erik here for his wound that your men gave him before he loses too much blood, so do you have a place where I can work," she said, now looking at the Legal. "That would be highly appreciated."

The Legal nodded and looked to the president for permission to leave and take the two young people somewhere else. Nan took this oppurtunity to say goodbye. “Thank you for your time Mister President," Nan said to the man, using her sweetest smile. “I'm sure that we'll speak again soon and I'm sure that more questions will have risen by that time." She then walked over and stood by the Legal, waiting for Erik to say anything else or ask any other questions of the president before they left him.

Erik watched as the President tried to explain himself to an obviously upset Nan and Erik couldn't help but agree with her. It was ludicrous to think a bunch of strangers could just skip around out into the middle of nothingness, hoping to find safety. Where would they even start?

“Well then sir, if you wouldn't mind I'd like to treat Erik here for his wound that your men gave him before he loses too much blood, so do you have a place where I can work," Nan said, Erik unsure whether she was speaking to the Legal or the President "That would be highly appreciated."

The President seemed to oblige, but before Erik could protest that he was fine, Nan excused herself and stood by the Legal, leaving him staring at the official, who was only a year or two older than him. He figured the Q and A time was over, but he asked one more question anyway.

"There wouldn't happen to be any way to say no to this... offer... would there?" he asked. The President just smiled and walked away, leaving Erik quite annoyed.

"He's a bloody-" Erik started, receiving a scowl from the Legal that made him stop. The Legal quickly turned and, as if they were playing follow the leader again, they let her lead them to a huge building built out of colored Styrofoam bricks. It almost looked like it was made of real cement. They opened the metal door, with a cloth around the handle, to reveal a whole infirmary inside, filled with tons of doctors working on people he had never seen before. Mercenaries.

They led them inside, where a cool breeze hit them, cooler than Erik had felt in years. Did they have air condition? And around him was tons of shelves full of medicine that he had never seen any doctors in the society carry around. They had been hoarding! They kept all the good stuff for themselves! And what put them so high and mighty to get special treatment while we all died of heat and Ouchies. Who knows, they could have a cure for Ouchies. This made the drugs bust that happened so long ago completely unfair and ironic. If all was fair, this secret department should have been executed with the rest of those doctors, half of them being innocent.

"He's a bloody-" Erik started, receiving a scowl from the Legal that made him stop.

Nan smiled, agreeing with Erik completely, this President seemed like a fraud to her. She sighed and followed the Legal through the large metal door and was in awe yet again. There were many mercenaries being treated in the room and Nan was also in awe at the room's coolness. She hadn't felt this cool in many years, even though they were in what once was Canada.

They walked down the row in the center of the room and Nan scanned the shelves that were on every wall. Penicillin, the flu vaccine, syringes, and other medical supplies and medicines covered almost every shelf. Suddenly, Nan felt herself becoming angry. If they had had all of these supplies in the first place, then why hadn't they given them out to the Doctors so that more sicknesses and deaths could have been cured or prevented. Nan took a deep breath and added this angry questions that she had to ask either a Legal or the President.

The Legal took them to one of the cots that were set along the walls in rows.

"You may use this space to complete your work," she said and turned away. "Someone will come and retrieve you when you are needed." With that, the Legal walked away and out of the cool room again.

Nan turned to Erik and sighed. "Gosh, this is awful," she said, while taking her backpack off, Watson crawled out and sat on the cot, purring. "Pull your shirt up and I'll patch up your wound, that's all that can really be done for now. I'm still not really sure that I have any idea as to what just happened." Nan grabbed a roll of bandages off of the wall. "Might as well not let these go to waste."

[It's totally fine :)]

"Yes, I'm absolutely dying to see you shirtless," Nan said after getting medical tape out of her bag. "Oh, you already... I should pay attention more often." She smiled.

Nan then inspected his side and put on a pair of latex gloves. She took the bowl that was by the cot and went to fill it at the sink which was at the far end of the room. She turned the faucet on and stepped back from the sink suddenly. The water here was cold, and she was speechless, she hadn't had cold water in years it seemed. Nan filled the bowl and then went back to the sink and filled two cups with the cold water, one for Erik and one for her. She brought them back over to the cot and then sat down on a stool next to Erik.

Nan took a towel and dipped it in the water to begin washing his wound, which had seemed to have slowed bleeding. When she was done washing it, Erik spoke.

“Is this air condition?" he asked Nan, assuming she probably wouldn't know but it wouldn't hurt to try and make conversation. "It feels good, but would'a been nice if they shared."

Nan looked up at him and spoke. “I don't know, I mean, where are they getting the electricity from, but it sure is nice. I haven't felt this cool in years."

She then placed a large square of gauze on Erik's wound and stuck several strips if tape over it so that the gauze wouldn't fall off. Nan took her gloves off and placed them in a trash bin near the cot. She put her supplies away and then sat back.

“I don't know why they aren't sending mercenaries. And why now? Why not earlier?". She said, scratching Watson behind the ears and then taking a sip of water.

“I don't know, I mean, where are they getting the electricity from, but it sure is nice. I haven't felt this cool in years," Nan said as she finished dressing the wound. “I don't know why they aren't sending mercenaries. And why now? Why not earlier?"

"Yeah, there's a lot of funky stuff goin' on," he said, wriggling up his nose. Once she threw her gloves away, Erik looked down and admired the patchwork she had done to his side. He approvingly nodded. "Sweet, thanks," he said.

One of the Mercenaries looked over at him, curiously. Probably wondering why someone as lowly as a builder was back in the restricted area of the society. Did they not know about the Promise Land? Was it really so secret that they didn't know? If you can't even tell your Mercenaries, how were you able to tell a bunch of random people you pull off the streets who aren't fighters or warriors, not in the slightest. Finally, the Mercenary spoke.

"What happened to you?" he said, staring at Erik's bandaged. "It looked like you got clipped with a bullet, but who here has guns?" Erik frowned.

"The same people who have air conditioning, electricity, cold water, and medicine," he said, wondering how the Mercenary didn't know this. No, Legals weren't carrying guns around often, but today they were.

"Yeah, the Visionary is pretty great. Can't help but love whoever the heck they are. Ya'll don't have any out there?" he asked, referring to outside the gates as if it was a whole other society that seemed foreign and far away. But, the man was obviously injured, concidering he was lying on a cot in an infirmary. Maybe he had some head trauma. Either way, Erik didn't know how to respond. He nervously looked over at Nan, hoping she had something to say in his stead. But, the Legal that had been leading them around marched in and looked at us, her face showing no emotions. For the first time, Erik actually registered her appearance.

She had brown hair that was pulled back into a ponytail and hazel eyes. Her serious expression seemed to make her seem years older, but she was only a few years older than him, at most, he assumed. She would have looked extremely pretty if she didn't have a scowl plastered on her face. He couldn't help but feel curious about her, but was snapped back into reality when he realized she had spoken and he was too zoned out to know what she had said. Plus, she was looking at him. Had she asked him a question? He looked back at Nan, lost.

Nan smiled as Erik thanked her and then faced her attention back on Watson. She wondered what the Promise Land was like, did it look just like the world used to? She sighed and imagined a blue sky and grass. She supposed that it would be strange to see either of the two things now, after living without them for so long.

As Nan tried to imagine the sky, she thought about what life was like before everything occurred. She had wanted to be a doctor when she was younger, like her mother, but Nan had never suspected that she would absolutely need to become one. For goodness sake, she didn't even have a degree. She had wanted to go to university too, but that wasn't an option now. Suddenly, Nan felt the desire to see her family again, but of course, that wasn't possible either.

She looked around the air conditioned room and wondered why all of these mercenaries were injured, surely they weren't doing anything extremely dangerous. With the hustle and bustle of the doctors and nurses, Nan felt at home. This was just like the hospital that her mother had worked at.

"Excuse me," the Legal said, returning and breaking Nan away from her thoughts. Nan looked up at her. "This is probably your last chance to retrieve anything from your home or send anything to anyone, so is there anything we could do." The Legal didn't seem to happy about this task, but Nan didn't mind.

Out of the corner of her eye, Nan realized that Erik was looking at her with a lost expression on his face. "She asked if the Legals could get anything from where you were staying for you or if you needed to send something out," Nan said to him, smiling.

She then opened her backpack and retrieved an envelope from inside. "Could you please give this to the mayor's son in the village that you found me in? I'm sure he will be looking forward to this letter, but I never got to give it to him. That's all." She handed the Legal the envelope and waited to see if Erik needed anything done.
