Introduction
In the year 2150, the earth became overpopulated. Chaos followed, with limited human resources being divided among far too many people. Suicide rates have skyrocketed, and people have been resorting cannibalism, even forming underground societies around the vile practice. Desperate for a solution, the people railed around the proposed legislation nicknamed the "John Smith Act." With this law in place, only those deemed most worthy to live would be allowed to survive. This proposed several solutions:
1. Elderly who are unfit for work may be euthanized without the consent of the individual or family.
2. Those with mental disabilities or other health issues that significantly affect their daily functioning would be euthanized.
3. Having children will require a license. Children born to unlicensed parents may be euthanized. Only those with "good genes" are issued licenses.
4. All children, at the age of 18, will be required to participate in a test of worth. In this comprehensive test, the participants are evaluated on all accepted forms of intelligence (general, logical, creative, etc) and various skills (musical, athletic, and so on). Those who rate at the top 75% percent are allowed to continue living. Those who fail are sent for "Pruning."
For the Pruning, people are gathered in groups of twenty-five for deadly tests of survival. Some of these tests involve riddles, others test endurance, some even test pure luck, but all have one thing in common: People will die. Those who survive are rewarded only with the opportunity to live until the next Pruning. However, those who survive to the last round--if any make it that far--are released from Pruning and allowed to go back to their lives.
This is the 7th year of Pruning, and no one has survived it yet. Will you be the first?
Other details:
1. There is a controversy about people with extended lifespans being allowed to continue to take the procedures during this time of overpopulation, but because they are rich and powerful, politicians will not pass a law that affects them.
2. The Pruning takes place in various locations, including an underground facility on Mars. The tests of survival are actually done virtually to save costs of constantly building new arenas, and it also allows for tests to include things that would be impossible or difficult to implement in real life. A computer does a full body scan of each person, assessing their physical and mental attributes to apply in the virtual world. For the tests, the person is put into a temporary coma and connected to the computer. The virtual world feels, smells, tastes, sounds, and looks real. If you run, you will run out of breath. And most importantly, if you die in the virtual world, the computer will kill you in real life.
3. In between Pruning stages, the participants are treated fairly well. They are fed, given clean water and soap, and are provided with various means to keep them entertained. They are even given private rooms to sleep in. They are not allowed to leave the facility, however. Any attempts to enter or leave an area unauthorized are punished severely.
4. Those on Mars don't have the problem of overpopulation. There are still few people living on Mars, and access to travel to Mars is very limited.
5. The Earth has united to form a one-world government, with authority over all the nations. Each nation still holds some level of independence, but the world government holds supreme power over all of them.
6. Because the test of worth at the age of 18 decides the fate of their children, parents have taken to training their children very hard to be able to pass the test, which in turn results in more difficult competition.

The test of worth covers intelligence of several forms, as well as skills. The 18-year-olds taking the test have to show that they are more competent than 25% of the population in any area. For example, if you have someone who's terrible at algebra, but they're the fastest track runner of their school, that person would pass the test despite their low mathematical intelligence.
