a character in “The Riders' Ascension”, as played by TornZero

Description

Gunnar
23 ♂
Human | Dragon Rider

Appearance: He used to have wonderful, long blonde hair that reached a nearly halfway down his 5'8" stature, but now it's singed into disarray just a couples inches long, laying around his face and neck in ash-colored fragments and covering his pulsing blue eyes. Branching indented scars line his back, but the one on the left edge of his lip draws more attention by comparison. Like a strike of lightning from the bottom up, it splits into branches as it goes from the lip past his nose, surrounding his left eye, and it glows white whenever he uses his abilities. Aside from that, he has no other visible scars, but his arms and legs are toned from his youth. Over it all, Gunnar wears thick black and brown clothing, and patches of light metal for armor.

Personality: Gunnar's very quiet, for one, but that's because he's mute. Seeing how some have treated their dragons, especially teenagers and even some adults, Gunnar is disgusted by his fellow riders; he finds solace in communicating with their dragons, and really only helps their riders to help them. Regarding fights, Gunnar's more defensive. He rarely attacks someone unprovoked, and even if he did have a reason to kick a man's ass, he'd let them go if they didn't try to attack first.

Power: Generation, absorption and manipulation of electricity and control over electromagnetism. Well, that's putting it very simply. At his current level, Gunnar can drain the electric charge from surrounding objects and generate his own, and this has otherwise eliminated sleep -- the only time he sleeps now is if he overexerts himself. He can also charge his entire body (or just portions of it) and electrocute anything he touches, including his weaponry. At non-physical ranges he has to have something conducting his charge to reach his target, but that's what his weapon is for. Along with using it offensively, Gunnar can generate an electromagnetic shield, use a static-like cling to run up the sides of walls and buildings, and use the electric charge of neurons to speak telepathically with dragons, among many other things. There's nothing saying that this ability couldn't extend to other living things and even mind reading, but he's only done so so far with dragons.

The only thing he can't seem to do with it is give electricity physical form, even if it's just something like ejecting it as lightning. He requires something more solid than air to transfer electric currents; since he hasn't thoroughly explored electromagnetism as well, the use of his abilities is almost always restricted to close range.

Weapon of Choice: A sickle-&-chain, made entirely of a highly conductive steel with a very long chain. He keeps much of the chain wrapped around his arms, with the sickle hooked onto his trousers. Using it, even without his powers, Gunnar is capable of defending himself at virtually any range.

Dragon: Gunnar seems to be the only rider who has no dragon. Instead, his abilities let him communicate with and even temporarily tame dragons that are linked with someone else, as long as he can make and retain physical contact.

Background
After having discovered his powers around the age of 11, Gunnar spent much of his remaining years evading not only assassins, but the hatred of commoners and honing his powers. The fact he'd been a dragon rider had occurred to him, but he'd never taken it upon himself to hatch a dragon for himself; everyone else's seemed to work just fine for him. With that in mind, and after some years of personal training and acquiring a weapon to suit his abilities, Gunnar took it upon himself to help dragons and their riders to protect them and teach them to communicate better, even if he couldn't speak for himself.

So begins...

Gunnar

"Thank you so much," the young lady concluded, mounting her beast and flying out of sight. Gunnar sat himself down on a log that was cut to make a seat, pulling a loaf of bread out of one of his pockets and taking a bite out of the end. It's been a while since he had fresh food.

"This guy's the rider causin' so much trouble? He don't even got a dragon, and if he does I sure as hell don't see it." One. He couldn't be older than Gunnar; must've been only twenty or something. He was too confident to be any older.

"Shut up; you're too loud. Plenty of us saw him riding one. On top of it, he's been helping other riders escape us." Two. This one sounded like he'd been through plenty in the few sentences he spoke. Maybe older.

"Well, long as his precious dragon ain't around I don't see why we can't kill him now!" With his shouting, the man leaped out from bushes nearby, brandishing a sword and running straight for Gunnar. His target placed the loaf back in his pocket, turned around along the log and slipped by the jab of his blade. Next thing he knew, Gunnar's hand was in his face and he was overloaded with electricity, the mixed feeling of cool steel on his forehead and warm fabric on his cheeks there and gone, replaced by searing heat and lightning coursing through his head. His face was burnt — disfigured — and he felt like his brain was exploding. Then he hit the ground below, dead before he could scream... before he could feel his severely weakened skull shattering on the stony walkway.

Gunnar stood straight and looked in the other man's direction, the left side of his face covered in jumping sparks; the latter was still in hiding, and the former didn't say a word. They both just knew that if he didn't stay there or run like hell, he'd die, too.

His face stopped flickering, and Gunnar returned to his small meal. As soon as he did, the assassin ran.

"We captured him, sir. It took over twenty men."

"Why did you need that many? He doesn't even have a dragon."

"We needed multiple coordinated squads. Pick-up groups were taken down too easily."

"How many did we lose?"

"Seven."

"That's too many for one man."

"This is a man who's eluded and defeated us for over a decade now, sir. At least we have him now."

Definitely one of my stranger dreams. Gunnar took a look at his surroundings, and quickly realized that that was no dream, but he had no idea why he'd heard that conversation. He was surrounded by wall, and his limbs were held against the one he rested on, but they failed to remove his weapon. A hooded man soon came into his cell with chains — he planned to add them to those already binding Gunnar's arms and legs. He gave the hooded man a warning shock.

"YEOW!" he shrieked, leaving the chains on the ground and retreating, grumbling to himself and practically sucking on his hands.

Another look around, and Gunnar noticed that the entire place — or at least, the confines of his prison — was made of metal. He could hear faint talking a ways down, too. He placed his hands against the wall and send out an electric pulse, hoping the metal reached far enough to shock them a bit.
