Introduction
Humans: The middlemen and the most ambitious race found in most continents. Humans are referred to (sometimes affectionately, sometimes not) as the βawkward phaseβ between Elementals and Aerians, humans are a sort of mix between the technologically-minded and the magically-minded. Some humans with an elemental lineage (a common situation) are born with subtler magical abilities, though not often to a large or significant extent. These abilities can include things such as: Being able to hover a few inches or a foot off the ground, the ability to change hair colour at will, or the ability to turn liquids into gas. Despite being the largest population in the continent, humans are often regarded with contempt by the other two races. They have an average lifespan of 70-85 years, a height that is not tall or short, and no real large advances in the departments of magic or sciences. However, despite the Aeriansβs love of knowledge and literacy, the Humans dominate the realm of myth and arts. While Aerians are known for their grandiose technology and Elementals for their beautiful ancient architecture and elegant culture, most history books are written by Humans, who have left their mark on the world with their wide array of talents, usually involving the fiction they write, their copious contributions to the art/music/dramatic world, and of course their most famous moment in history: creating, implementing, and sustaining the peace/anti-discrimination treaty between the Elementals and Aerians. Humans are known as the jack of all trades, and the unseen ruling class.
Aerians: Said to be descendants of the rebels from the Eenlin Civil War, the Aerians are a technologically advanced race that lives on the floating island of Aeolus, kept afloat thousands of feet off the ground by powerful steam engines and machines. They are a smaller branch of humans, usually growing only from 5β3β-5β7β. They have adapted to the thinner air the high altitude, but tend to be thinner themselves. Asthma is incredibly common among Aerians, which is why Inhalers are a mandatory requirement. Strenuous physical activity can send them into hyperventilation, due to their decreased levels of oxygen and red blood cells. Most Aerians are smaller and skinny, living to about 60 years old. They seem to reject religion in place of Atheism, and have a reputation for their hatred of magic. Though this is true for some demographics of Aeolus Isle, most have learned to co-exist with their fellow magical beings. This race is widely known for being the first to create steam powered engines, flintlock guns and muskets, radio communication, electricity, but most importantly: The Airship. The Aerian education system favours science and literacy above all else, and to some only seem to think in terms of logic and pragmatism.
The Aeolus Isle
The large island in the sky, north of Tineburgh/Kendenn and directly upward. This large city is known for its technological advancements and military strength. It is composed of mostly Aerian and a slightly smaller minority of humans. Since the treaty had been passed decades ago, it has a slowly growing population of Elementals as well (mostly air-type), but doesnβt have the best history of respect for them. The island was said to have been created after the Aerians wanted to break away from the Elemental kingdom to create their own. Years were spent gathering the technology and steam power required to do such a wild thing, and at the height of war, the ground split and the island ascended into the heavens, where it has remained ever since. Breathing aids are given to those visiting for the first time.
Tineburgh
Upper:
Lower:
The Capitol of Temaria and believed to have the most diversity. Through itβs largeness and claim that nobody would ever be turned away from a hospitable home, the unemployment and often homelessness in the slums of the large city is undeniable. Covered up, but undeniable. The city is 38% human, 31% Aerian and 31% Elemental. It is the capitol trading city for goods and services, and was established after the Eenlin Civil War. It also has a reputation for itβs illegal gambling halls at the back of many bars and run-down departments.
Note on the slums of Tineburgh: Gangs and thugs are incredibly prevalent here.
Illmori
Above Ground:
Underground:
A large city that sits partially above ground and partially underground. Beneath itβs initial large, expansive and frankly beautiful architecture of marble and stone walls lays a set of sometimes romantically and sometimes brightly lit caverns filled with secret ponds, rivers and interesting wildlife. This is the main Elemental city, and it is visited often for its beauty and rich culture. It has of course, a large number of Elementals, a smaller minority of humans, and little Aerians. Most of itβs lights and elegant aspects are created/sustained with magic, much to the contempt of the Aeolus Empire.
Religion:
Main Goddess β Ylena, Mother of The Earth and her Elements.
God of the Skies - Ualdir
Goddess of Law and Justice - Ivtris
God of Knowledge and Legends - Abados
Goddess of War - Oselia
God of Wealth and Medicine β Eione
God of Deviants β Deisii the genderless god.
God of Love, Family, and Relations -Aluis
Goddess of The Arts and Architecture β Erva
Goddess of Sleep, Dreams, and Death β Aisling
Afterlife: It is said in the Elemental culture that when you die, you wander the dream world with the goddess Aisling forevermore, to shape it as you see fit if you have been worthy of this life. The scripture states that humans were given their magic by the gods to protect themselves and the world from the harsh creatures created by Deisii, and was to be a blessing and a sign of love from Ylena. βAfter Divine Interventionβ refers to this legend, as it was believed that during the thousands of years before that, the world was divided in chaos and death, but united after being given this gift.
(It was also united because everyone didnβt have to fight for their life and could actually learn to read and write, and learn a common language.)
A Timeline:
ADI: After Divine Intervention
The Arcana Aeon: 502 ADI β 581 ADI
This was an age about a century or so ago where Elementals mostly ruled over the kingdoms due to their superior magical abilities. Humans were a smaller sub race that lived among them. In some cultures they were treated fairly, but in the eastern countries humans of frail size or without magical ability could often only find work in Illmori or the former (very large) capitol city of Eenlin as servants or labourers. Elemental history books will state that they were paid labourers, whereas Aerian history books state that they were slaves.
The Age of Rebellion: 582 β 583 ADI
Mistreated humans were tired of being seen as lower than the Elementals, and revolted after a peaceful protest of class differences was disrupted by a fistfight and crude words from their magical kin. Soon after began to the Eenlin Riots, which were violent protests that lead to civil war.
The Eenlin Civil War: 583 β 587 ADI
The civil war lead to many, many casualties of mostly humans. This was when the developments of technology truly began within the human race. Dynamite and muskets were created for war, as well as an incendiary weapon known as Alchemistβs Fire which-- since it was not natural fire-- could not be manipulated by Fire Elementalists. The humans were able to take Eenlin for themselves, and began expanding on other colonies, the most prominent and famous being Tineburgh.
The Age of False Peace: 587 β 634 ADI
This term is used loosely, as the tension between Illmori and Eenlin was running excruciatingly high. Border scuffles were often, discrimination was incredibly prominent in both cities, and hate-crimes were frequent.
The Mechanical War: 634 β 639 ADI
Eventually, the humans of Eenlin began a war with the Elementals of Illmori after an important member of their Senate was found dead just outside the βenemyβ streets. The Elementals argued that they would not break the peace in such a violent act, but the war erupted nonetheless with a push and shove from the Eenlin council. The Elementals began badly losing due to their refusal to fight with anything beyond blades and their own magic. Many who did not want a part in the war fled to Tineburgh as refugees, where they were accepted and taken in by hospitable families and homes. (This also lead to Elemental and Human couples, who produced offspring with a magical side).
The Creation of Aeolus Island: 639 ADI
The humans of Eenlin had been working on a way to separate themselves entirely from the Elementals and continue the war from the skies. In 639 ADI, the Elemental military leader and priest Zephros writes:
βAnd before me unfolded an image of great magnitude. The ground began to shake and split as if the gods themselves were tearing it by its roots, slowly lifting it from the ground with great and mighty rumbles that no Earth Elementalist could ever equal. It ascended to the heavens, leaving the echoes of the whirring machines in its wake. Moments after, explosions littered the battlefield, the soldiers flew into the air and returned to the ground as lifeless as ragdolls. I fear we will not win this war.β
The humans of the former Elemental capitol renamed themselves the βAeriansβ, and the capitol became the Aeolus Island.
The Concord Treaty- 639 ADI
The humans and Elementals of Tineburgh had seen the effects of the bombs, deciding that the war had to end. The humans went to reason with the Aerians, whereas the Elementals went to tend to their own injured kind. Several representatives from both sides were called in for negotiations, and there was a large debate, neither side wanted to back down for the insult done to them, but eventually Jamie Cartwright, councilwoman of Tineburgh broke through the arguing with her famous quote: βOur cultures and cities will be swept away in this war like ants in a flood, if these people are to act like children, I will treat them as such.β
The books say that she had sent out letters to the guards after blocking the exits with the forces that had been brought with her, and she had simply refused to let anyone leave until they came to a proper understanding. A month later, this became the official document known as the Concord Treaty, which states that in the country of Temaria, all are equal, no wars will be wrought. Peace, acceptance of culture, and a unity will be maintained.

The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 3 authors
"Boy, Axel, that was some really good stuff. If you don't want yours, you mind if I have it?" He asks, the tone of his voice clearly teasing. He enjoyed watching the Elemental struggle with the situation. It doesn't count as his own revenge against the guy, but it's a nice start. The rest will come later.
Axel turned around, "I don't need your soup.. I can manage with the bread I have left." He spat wiggling the bag of bread slung over his shoulder. There wasn't much bread to last him even the rest of the night, but when he said he'd rather starve to death then apologize to the Aerian he meant it. "Maybe if your people weren't busy hunting me down I would have the time to find out how to be kind to your race. But, I'm too busy watching my kin fall to your weapons and hiding from your sky patrols to do that. An apology is something you'll never hear from me aer girl." and with that he began to walk off into the forest.
He instantly shouts out in pain, stumbling forward onto his face in the dirt. While there are no visible wounds, his shoulder blade has been painfully burned from contact with the near-burning metal of the can. In addition, Axel's throw alone was enough to do some damage to Simon. Simon pushes himself up onto his elbows, breathing sharply through his teeth.
"Dammit, Axel... a simple 'no' would have been fine..." He mutters, scooting as far from where the can has landed as he is able. Simon isn't hungry for soup anymore.
"The same?! Your people created your civilizations on the backs of mine, your people worked mine to the bone with wages the size of my atoms! Yours point your magic and cause just as much destruction as mine with the machines we created in our own defence! The Treaty of Concord preaches peace and equality without prejudice for both races, yet the first thing you saw when you arrived to my wreckage wasn't a struggling girl who was close to death, but an enemy, wasn't it? I haven't done a thing to you but paying your disrespect in kind!"
Simon, on the other hand, may be able to hear the distant rumble of footsteps and growling voices...
"Hey, Annoyance #1 and Annoyance #2," He says, calling over to Piper and Axel, though they may likely just ignore his words to continue their fight, "You guys hear what I'm hearing? Because what I'm hearing does not sound too good."
"Grab the Aerian and Elemental scum." One of them growls.
"I didn't lead them anywhere you idiot! They found you because you were shouting!" Piper screeched out, deciding to leave out that her yelling must have aided in this dilemma just as much. "They're going to kill both of us and you made me put my gun down back there!"
"TAKE ONE STEP CLOSER AND SHE, WILL GO FROM A GIRL TO ASHES IN SECONDS!" He growled, the anger behind his voice enforcing the empty threats, as he backed up a little. Still holding her in the hostage position though not squeezing her neck as tight so she could breathe. "Deception is a strength of yours Aer girl.. Help me out here." He whispered through gritted teeth as he continued to back up, hoping the extremists would stop. "BOTH OF THESE AERIAN SCUM TRIED TO KILL ME, UNTIL THEY FELL TO THE ANCIENT ELEMENTAL ARTS! MIND CONTROL! SOMETHING YOUR MACHINES CAN'T DO!" He shouted out, perhaps his lying was getting worse, or maybe the Extremists would believe in his magical capabilities, and believe that he could actually control minds. In which case it would explain Simon and Piper not doing anything to kill Axel. "DO YOU REALLY WANT TO FALL TO THE POWERS OSELIA HAS INVESTED UPON ME NEXT?"
"HE'S LYING!" she screeched out soon after, "He tried to kill me! Both of us! Don't run away! Give me a gun so I can kill him myself!"
She went to bite down on the forearm Axel held her with, though it was more of a gnaw. "Le'h go ah'n pre'hend it hur'" She whispered again once her jaws had 'clamped' around his flesh.
Axel jumped back, swearing in the elemental tongue, words that would probably make no sense to their ears. He gripped on to his arm, stumbling back all in once convincing act. Though he was trying to channel his energy. He didn't know how much fire he could summon at this point, and how he would control it to blast the extremists and not the unconscious Simon and Piper. Most of all he needed to control it just enough so he would have energy to run away when the time came. Could he do all this? He though as he waited for the signal, still putting on a show of pain as he gripped his arm, his eyes slightly looking up.
What if she wasn't trying to help him as well? What if she had double crossed him too! He shook his head, now wasn't the time to think about it. Any elemental would notice that even through the act he was putting on he was channeling his energy. A slight bit of smoke was beginning to seep off around him, as he tried to keep the flames contained. He was sweating and his breathing was hard, though it went a bit with the front he was putting up. It was all or nothing now.
But... really, she wouldn't do that.
"This is the signal." She spoke out loud, before turning around and shooting the person that held Simon in the centre of their foot, causing them to drop the human boy before she herself dropped down into a lowered position.
Luckily she knew well enough to duck, because nothing would have saved her from the torrent of flames that flared from Axel's hands. It was the best job he had ever done of controlling his magical energy, though it did come out sloppy. He shut his eyes, he didn't know what he was hitting, all he knew was that he was hitting it. A long ray of the flames fired out ahead of him, spraying out like a flamethrower for a while at whatever targets lay ahead of him. He used too much, as he could feel himself tiring quickly. Abruptly the flames stopped after a solid 2 minutes of straight firing. Axel's arms dropped limp to his side as his eyes rolled back, dropping down to the forest floor unconscious. It was his best job so far at controlling it, though no one said it was a good job. He used far too much energy, and more of the flames were coming from his head then his hands. Though the mass of flames just might have done the trick.
He then looks up to see waves of fire being shot wildly around the place by Axel and decides the ground is most likely the safest place for Simon to be right now. Simon flattens himself against the dirt, hoping to avoid getting incinerated by the reckless flames. He shouts a long and wild stream of curses, muffled by his face being pressed into the ground.
And it was only when Piper opened her eyes that she saw what she assumed to be the world in flames.
The trees had caught fire, and the flames licked the bark and covered them, spreading across dead branches and slowly enveloping the forest.
"SHIT!" She screamed, "THE FOOD!" before stumbling to her feet, running blindly into the smoke.
Axel slowly stood, the forest around him was burning but he had never felt more calm. He took a few stumbley steps, trying to regain his footing but his legs were basically telling him to lay his ass down and rest some more. Of course, he ignored what his legs had to say and stumbled forward in to the smoke. "Is the food okay?" He shouted out in a broken voice at the girl who just jumped into smoke and flames that could burn her alive or choke her. He didn't know if he would be able to sleep at night if something would have happened to the food
Piper shouted something about food and ran into the smoke, but Simon couldn't care less currently. Being around these two was bad news, and Simon wanted to be gone as soon as possible. He stumbled woozily away from Axel and Piper, only to realize that the forest surrounding the clearing had gone up in flames. Looks like he's sitting tight for awhile.
"Well this is fucking swell," He muttered, looking over his shoulder to give Axel a scowl, "Nice job starting a forest fire."
But the burns she would sustain from all that really weren't worth a few burned loaves of bread.
She doubled back toward the boys, coughing violently as she had to take another gulp of air from her inhaler. She leaned down, grabbing one of the dropped guns, and hugged it as if it were her only life insurance, which really, it was.
"We need to leave!" she shouted.
