It was early morning in Times Square, New York City....though even for such an early morning period, the place was lively with traffic of all kinds. Tourists and New Yorkers alike roamed the streets, while giant advertisements for the latest movies and tv shows were projected on screens all over the square. It was chaotic, to say the least...but a controlled sort of chaos. It was largely predictable, and with so many people around, it provided cover for meetings such as this to take place.

Gabriela Thorne, a Lieutenant Inspector of the Slayer Society, was sitting at a nondescript table in the Times Square area, in a small public space filled with small tables and chairs such as her own. A place for people to rest their feet for a few minutes, or for groups to arrange small meetings together. Such as the one she'd be having, soon enough.

Her supervisor, Miguel Amaro, would be meeting with her and her partner, Natalie, any minute now. They'd both received a text a little over an hour ago that they had a new case on their hands, and that Amaro would be filling them in on the details in their usual meetup spot. Natalie herself was due to show up soon, too....in fact, it surprised her a little that her partner wasn't there already. As it was, she was running a little late. They hadn't been working together long though, just for a few months, but they'd worked enough cases that Natalie showing up late was a bit unusual. It was likely traffic, or something like that; that always tended to be the case. And who could blame her, given how busy New York City was?

New York City...it was interesting how things changed, yet stayed the same, here. Gabriela hadn't been here in over five years..and while she'd noticed some changes since moving back, in many ways, the City hadn't changed at all. Hell, the old neighborhood was just the same as always...which was rather depressing, really. A new gang had moved in to replace the...old one, but other than that...

Well, she should just be thankful that she hadn't run into any old associates just yet. New York City was big (really, it was just four or five different cities combined into one...), so the chances of running into any of them was slim. And if she was lucky, that would remain the case during her tenure in the East Coast Division of the Slayer Society. Besides, living here was far more preferable than working the job in LA. That had been...

....

Well, LA was best left in the past. She wasn't part of the West Coast Division any longer; she had a new apartment, a new partner, a new supervisor; just about the only thing that wasn't new were the clothes on her back, the weapons she still carried, and the rather distinctive burn scar she had on her face, and elsewhere on her body. Heh, the scars...with those marking her body, it may well be possible that no one who knew her from the Old Days would recognize her now. Before she'd joined the Society, her body had been relatively unmarked or blemished. Now...it was the most distinctive thing about her. People usually registered that, before they even fully registered her face.

Plastic surgery could only do so much, and even the medical miracles of the Society couldn't completely heal the damage done to her. Hell, given what she'd gone through, she was lucky to be alive...

Gabriela frowned, not wanting to dwell on that incident. There and then, at least. It always brought up...unpleasant memories.

She was saved from further reflection, though, when her partner did show up. Gabriela gave the junior Lieutenant Inspector a polite smile, nodding as she took a seat next to her. "Good morning, Natalie.

The steady thrumming of the city, with all its noisy cars and people at any given hour, was as much a reassurance as it was a concern to Natalie. Part of it reminded her of her home in Chicago, albeit even more cramped and loud, but that line of thought only reminded her how easy it was for things far more insidious than poor drivers to hid in the crowds of the city.

All the more reason Natalie took her time walking through the streets, simply observing. It wasn't as if she expected to find some creature simply walking down the sidewalk, at least not in daylight, but she had been a cop long enough to get some small feeling of a neighborhood simply by watching its people. She had seen plenty of places in Chicago were the residents walked about quickly from one place to another, watching cautiously for the first sign of trouble when there had been a recent shooting or other incidents. And that had only been when she thought the worst troubles to face were petty mobsters and drunks. But Natalie had seen far worse over time, and even when the people around her remained ignorant, it was much harder to hide the disappearances that happened, and the fact that the people who remained never received any answers made them all the more fearful.

Fortunately, Natalie didn't see any sign of such fears as she observed the people around her. Not that anything remotely intelligent would be foolish enough to expose itself anywhere near a place like Times Square. Of course, not every threat was so obvious. The more subtle of monsters tended to be the most dangerous, after all.

She quickened her pace as she caught sight of Gabriela, striding up to the table. "Mornin', boss. Didn't miss Amaro, right? Was just talking the long way here, getting the lay of the streets."

"No, Amaro hasn't shown up yet. He will soon though, I imagine. Please, take a seat." Gabriela replied, nodding at her partner. After two or three minutes of her own arrival, their handler and supervisor showed up.

Miguel Amaro was an older looking Hispanic man, perhaps in his mid to late forties. He was dressed rather professional, wearing a suit and tie, and the man carried a brief-case at his side. If they didn't know any better, Gabriela and Natalie might suspect he was just some passing businessman, perhaps someone from Wall Street who was out for a quick breakfast. Of course, Special Operations Major Miguel Amaro was much more than that.

Amaro nodded briefly at the two women, taking a seat at their table. "Good morning, Inspectors. My apologizes for calling you so early, but...this case quite suddenly came to our attention."

He paused, then without much preamble, he launched straight into their mission. Which wasn't unusual for him; while they did not see Amaro much outside of their case briefings and debriefings, from what Gabriela could tell about his personality, he seemed to be a man most comfortable getting straight to business. In essence, he was all work and no play.

"At around three AM this morning, a man named Daniel Parker was rushed into the emergency room of Mercy General Hospital complaining of chest pains and shortness of breath. At four AM, his condition worsened and his doctors determined that he was suffering from massive organ failures. At five AM, he slipped into a sudden catatonic state, and his body further deteriorated. And by six AM, he was dead. All brain activity ceased, and his heart stopped beating shortly thereafter. I trust you two can discern the most probable cause of his sudden death?" Amaro inquired, giving them both an inquisitive stare.

Gabriela gave a nod, taking in the information easily enough. She'd been at the job long enough to tell that, more likely than not, this Daniel Parker had had the misfortune of sleeping with a Succubi. For reasons that Slayer Society scientists and researchers had yet to fully discern, men and women who slept with Succubi usually died within the next twenty four hours. Their bodies breaking down around them almost, as their physical health worsened and worsened, until they ultimately expired. And the symptoms that Parker seemed to display matched the Succubus calling card perfectly.

"Our informant in the hospital has done his best to supply us with more information about this Daniel Parker, and the circumstances of his death. It's your duty to continue on from here, however." Amaro proclaimed. A moment later, he placed his briefcase on the table, and opened it up. He picked out two manila folders, and handed one each to the Inspectors.

As both women started glancing through the files, their case supervisor elaborated: "That is everything we've collected about this Daniel Parker, in the hours since we learned of him. Apparently he's going through a messy divorce, though we doubt the wife has anything to do with his death, unless she's suddenly been turned into a Succubus. Which...is a possibility, but an unlikely one. According to our research, Daniel was known to sleep around...in fact, that fact seems to be the main reason behind his impending divorce. Our working theory is that a Succubus seduced him while he was out looking for women to...have liaisons with, but we can't say that for certain. That is where you two come in. When you are both ready, make your way over to the hospital and examine his body. Perhaps the coroner can give you some usual information, before you expand the investigation to his whereabouts in the last twenty four hours."

Gabriela gave a curt nod, accepting the information readily enough. Yeah, checking out his body would be a good place to start. Make sure he did, indeed, die from relations with a Succubus. It was rare, but there were some natural diseases that could mimic the effects of whatever sexually transmitted disease Succubi left on humans. Still...this wouldn't be an easy case. New York City was a big place, and this Succubus could disappear into the wind. Not all cases ended in success, after all. Indeed, Gabriela couldn't count how many cold cases she'd ended up with during the course of her career in the Slayer Society...

But, it was their obligation to look into the case though, even if they didn't find the girl (or guy) who did this. If there was any chance they could find the Succubus who did this, and take them out, then they'd need to investigate this case. Besides, they did receive a bonus whenever their investigations resulted in the successful take-out of a Supernatural entity.

"Any questions, Inspectors?" Amaro then inquired, looking over at the two women curiously.

Natalie nodded idly, content to sit and watch the city go by until Amaro arrived. She nodded curtly to him, silently thankful for him moving right on to the case at hand. They weren't in the city for touring, after all, if there was a monster on the loose, then there was no time for pleasantries.

Even if she had never made it to detective, she knew enough of what to listen for, especially after what she had learned from the Slayers. It seemed straightforward enough, from what she knew. There weren't many things in the world, even among monsters, that could kill a human in hours without leaving any obvious trace. And a cheating husband looking for women was certainly easy prey for a succubus. The only hard part was finding a monster as subtle as a succubus in such a crowded city.

"There anything else on him? Something local police ran up before we came on this? Or anyone similiar victims come up over the last few months?" She leaned back in her seat, smiling contently in anticipation. "Sounds like all we have to do is find his favorite club and flush out the succubus."

Gabriela listened absently as Natalie shot a few questions at the Major. She had no questions herself, but her partner brought up some good ones, as well. As far as her partner's suggestion went...that was probably their best course to take, all things considered. There was a good chance that Parker had been just a random pick, an easy target that the Succubus had chosen. It was likely her first time meeting the vic too, otherwise Parker would have died a long time ago. Though that might make it her first time at whatever bar, club, or strip joint Parker frequented, too....which would make their investigation harder. Still, it was an avenue worth pursuing. If they were lucky, Parker hadn't just been picked up by the Succubus on the streets. Now that would be a harder lead to follow.

"The local police are just investigating his murder. They have no idea what actually happened to him, of course, but they are treating his death as suspicious. The detectives assigned to his case are likely going to show up at the hospital soon, if they haven't already. You'll have to deal with them during your own investigation...but how that goes, I leave up to you, Agents. The detectives could prove useful for grunt work, or chasing down other leads. They may not like you, but they will respect the authority you wield. Or proclaim to wield, at least." Amaro replied, answering the first part of Natalie's question.

Gabriela gave at nod at that, taking in her superior's elaboration. Figured that the local 5-0 would be taking a look at his death. And why not? To have someone die so suddenly like that, under suspicious circumstances...of course they'd look into the possibility that Parker was murdered. The local cops assigned to his case might be annoying to deal with...but a flash of her and Natalie's FBI badges would hopefully make them cooperate. Of course, neither she nor Natalie were actually FBI agents. But it wasn't as if they could seriously claim they were apart of a shadowy, secret organization that hunted down monsters, right? Thus, the Society provided them with several false identities and covers when they pursued these cases. And among those different covers, she and Natalie had a pair of FBI badges. Of all the bogus badges they had been issued, the FBI ones seemed to be the best ones to use in this case.

"Oh, and to answer your question...so far, the local police haven't dug up anything of note. I imagine they'll be focusing their investigation on his wife...which is reasonable enough. When a husband or wife suddenly dies, especially under suspicious circumstances, there's a good chance their spouse was behind it. Of course, I doubt that will be the case in this instance....though you shouldn't neglect to look into the possibility that the wife herself was Turned in the last forty-eight hours. Things like this happen from time to time, after all." the Major added, shifting a little in his seat. "And as for similar victims....well, this is New York City, Inspector Harker. We receive reports of all sorts of monster activity in this city on a near daily basis. Over the past several weeks, there have been other reported instances of succubus-instigated death....but about half of those investigations led nowhere. It's easy to disappear in this city, after all. Though hopefully things will be different in this case. You two do get paid more with a successful investigation, after all."

Miguel gave a little chuckle at that, while Gabriela herself gave a weak little smile at the half-joke. Their superior wasn't wrong, per say. They got paid regardless, but they did receive a bonus in their checks whenever their missions ended with the successful bag-and-tag of a monster. She supposed the higher-ups thought it would give their field agents an incentive to work harder at their jobs, or something.

"Any other questions, Agents?" Amaro inquired for the last time, looking between the two Inspectors.

Natalie shook her head once Amaro was finished. "We'll run her down, sir, no problem." The multiple suspicious deaths were confirmation enough that a succubus had set up shop, and sooner or later it would slip up and leave something behind. Then they would just have to track it down. Not easy by any means, but doable for sure.

"Can pull some kind of FBI serial killer investigation thing with local PD, use them to try and pull everything together," Natalie said as she leaned over to Gabriela. "If the succubus is staying here, then there's gotta be a pattern. We have a list of probable victims. Just need the police's resources to connect all the dots, find the hunting grounds, and then track down the monster. Pin her into a corner and fill her with holes. Nice and easy."

All they had to do was find enough evidence to actually convince the police that a third party was involved, rather than the wife in this man's case, or whatever circumstances had been involved in all the previous deaths. The badges might get them an in, but it wouldn't get blind obedience. But it was easy enough to treat them with actual respect and keep them looped in on the 'serial killer', which would hopefully be enough for the two of them to be seen as more than just a pair of feds looking to swoop in and steal the credit for catching the culprit. Of course, the more complicated issue was that succubi only survived on their ability to be subtle, post-coitus corpses aside, and there were an awful lot of people in the city to hide among.

Doable for sure, Natalie resolved, odds be damned.

"Very good, ladies. Ah...before I leave, you'll need these." Amaro spoke up, pausing as he reached into his brief-case to pull out something else. He pulled out two bottles half-filled with pills. The bottles themselves were unmarked, not clearly indicating just what these pills were.

"You know the procedure, Agents. Take two of these pills twice a day, for the duration of your investigation, and you should be immune to whatever pheromones the Succubi is projecting." the Major declared, as the two female Inspectors each took a bottle. Gabriela pocketed hers away for the moment, making a mental note to take two before they got to the hospital to check out Parker's body.

"Do keep in mind however...the protection these pills give you won't work if the Succubus gets too close, and manages to kiss you. Our best and brightest are still working on a way to counter-act that ability, but have yet to have much in the way of results. So...do everyone in the Society a favor, and try not to let a Succubus get that close to you." Miguel advised, as he closed his brief-case. Letting Gabriela pocket the documents he'd given them about their specific case, even as both Inspectors took in his warning.

For reasons beyond their comprehension, or pay, the eggheads in the Society had yet to make a definitive defense against a Succubus' kiss. Whether it be magic, or a sudden expulsion of pheromones the regular drugs just couldn't handle, they had no proper defense against that aspect of Succubus mind control. This, despite the fact that the Society had managed to concoct a drug to counter-act the effects of the normal mind-controlling pheromones given off by Succubi. Regardless though...well, they shouldn't have much to worry. Ideally, they would be able to identify the Succubus, and put it down, long before it got close enough to ensnare either of them.

"That'll be all for now, then. i expect a daily report from the both of you until the completion of your investigation." Major Amaro reminded them, before standing up, and walking away. Off to give another team a mission assignment, presumably. That, or report back to his own superiors, or do whatever it was that he did in his off time.

Gabriela glanced over at Natalie, standing up from her own chair as she stretched a little. All in all, this wouldn't be an easy mission. Succubus Investigations never were, given how easy it was for them to blend in. They were one of the more covert Monster classes, next to the Changelings. Maybe if the other recent Succubi cold cases were related to the same creature, they might catch a break. But that remained to be seen.

"So, ready, Partner?" Gabriela casually inquired, ready to get to business. "Oh, and it's your turn to pay for Uber. Unless you'd rather take a taxi to the hospital?"

Natalie nodded to Amaro as she took the bottle, looking it over while he finished his report. "I'm confident we'll have good news to report soon, sir." She said before he left. The pill was certainly more than just a small blessing, when it came to hunting a succubus. They were subtle enough without having the ability to confound anyone that came close to them. But with these, she could easily put a hole in any one that came close enough to her, long before the creature could try to kiss her. Popping the cap open, she shook one out and promptly tossed it in her mouth to swallow. Better safe than sorry, if they were lucky beyond any expectation for the first day.

But presuming extreme luck wasn't on their side, at least they had a plan. Talk to the contact, see the bodies, bluff their way to the police, get the info of the past murders and work with the local cops to piece it all together until they could narrow down a hunting ground. Lengthy work, at most, but most certainly doable.

"No sense waiting around when this place is swimming with cabs." Natalie said as she headed for the street to wave one down. "Just gotta make sure the cabbie doesn't rob us blind. Pretty sure that's a universal concept."

"Fair point. We can take a taxi, then. Just don't forget, it's your turn to pay." Gabriela idly reminded her partner, as she flagged down a taxi. One showed up just a minute later, and soon enough the two were off. And after nearly twenty minutes of driving through New York traffic, they finally arrived at the hospital. While Natalie paid the cabbie, the older, more veteran Inspector went ahead and took a pill of her own. It was unlikely they'd encounter the Succubus on the first day of their investigation, but one never knew.

After the cabbie drove off, the duo walked inside. They stepped into a semi-full reception area, where men and women of all ages and genders sat, waiting to be called upon by a nurse or doctor to get checked up for...whatever brought them to the hospital. Thankfully, they didn't have to wait in line with all of them. A simple flash of their fake badges was enough to get the attention of the nurse running the reception desk. Though her burn scar probably got the nurse's attention first, before the badges even got out.

"Oh! How can I help you, Agent...Thorne?" the nurse inquired, sounding a touch surprised. Which, to be fair, wasn't all that suspicious. It probably wasn't every day a federal agent, fake or not, came to their hospital. As she spoke, her gaze of course lingered over the admittedly horrific burn scar the blonde had on her face. For her part though, Gabriela didn't really mind. It had taken her awhile, but she'd gotten used to the stares her scar earned her.

"We're here about a suspicious death that happened earlier this morning. A mister...Daniel Parker, I believe." Gabriela proclaimed, pausing briefly to recall the vic's name.

The nurse nodded, entering the name into her computer to make sure they were talking about a body that was actually here. Once she confirmed things, she stood up and walked out from the receptionist desk. "Of course, Agents. Um, if you'll follow me? I think Doctor Isaac is about to conduct the autopsy of Mister Parker, according to the schedule. If he hasn't finished already."

Natalie paid careful attention to the cabbie with little else to do as they slowly made their way through the city traffic. It wasn't as if they could discuss the case while they were in the car. And any cabbie worth is cab would swindle them as soon as they took their eyes off the meter. Fortunately, the cabbie didn't try anything. Of course, Gabriela was more than imposing when it came to these things, and Natalie certainly thought she was no slouch herself.

Regardless, they arrived at the hospital promptly enough, given New York, and Natalie followed Gabriela inside, letting her deal with the staff as she idly glanced around the hospital. At least there didn't seem to be any state of panic from an uptick of violence and death that occasionally did accompany demonic troubles. She flashed her badge alongside Gabriela, waiting for as the nurse curried back and forth.

"Should try and get into the room with him to see the autopsy up close." Natalie muttered quietly to Gabriela after the nurse told them about the doctor and the body. "Who knows if there'll be anything odd in it, and we still gotta figure out how to convince the cops that there's a serial killer running around seducing their victims. Maybe she's got a type, more specific than just men."

The nurse led the two Inspectors dutifully through the hospital, taking them down to the basement after a few minutes of walking and taking an elevator. They arrived in the morgue wing of the hospital not long after. Built-in wall containers lined the area, to house the bodies of the dead before and after an autopsy. The lighting was a bit...off as well, annoyingly enough. There seemed to be a persistent flicker in the fluorescent light up above, which gave the whole cooled room an unnecessary, ominous tone.

In the center of the morgue a scrubs-clad older man was hunched over, studying a body that was neatly laid out on a table. Upon hearing their footsteps though, he stopped his studies and turned to glance at them. The nurse briefly introduced the two Inspectors to Doctor Isaac, before making a quick exit.

"Good morning, agents." the coroner greeted, pausing to take off his blood-stained rubber gloves. "How can I help the FBI today?"

Gabriela glanced at her partner, gesturing for her to take the lead. Natalie was more than capable of asking the doctor some questions about the Parker (and presumably, that was his body that was on the table), after all. Plus, she tended to be better at reading inbetween the lines, and generally observing and studying people, which was easier to do when her partner took the lead in questioning.

Natalie's eyes darted around the halls of the hospital as she strained against a nervous shiver, for one reason or another. The sterile scent of disinfectant, most likely, giving the hospital a lifeless air, despite the irony. Less so once they reached the morgue, of course. But there seemed to be no real reason to be on edge, just yet.

She nodded politely to the doctor as she and Gabriela stepped up to him, pulling out her fake badge once more. "Good morning, Doctor. We've investigating a potential lead on a case that that the late Mr. Parker may be related to." Natalie gestured to the body on the table, peering briefly at it before looking back to Isaac. "It would seem we caught you at a good time. That is him, yes? Did you find anything noteworthy in the autopsy?"

"Yes, this is Mr. Parker. As for any noteworthy finds..." Doctor Isaac paused, considering his words carefully before continuing on. "Well, I do admit, I am a bit...baffled as to how he died. My initial findings indicate he suffered a fatal heart attack, precipitated by massive organ failure. I have no idea what caused this, however. It almost seems as if he died from some fatal, fast-acting disease, but i don't know anything that works this fast. It's possible he may have been poisoned, but I'll need to wait on a toxicology report before determining that."

Gabriela gave a brief nod, as the doctor elaborated. Standard stuff so far, when it came to Succubus killings. Nothing new though, and just to be sure they WERE dealing with a Succubus...

"Doctor, did you find any strange markings on the victim? Say...near his genitalia?" the senior agent inquired, gazing at the coroner with a curious look.

Doctor Isaac looked at her strangely, not expecting a question like that it seemed, before giving a little nod. "Yes, in fact. I made note of it during my initial inspection of the body. I discovered what could only be described as a pentagram tattoo at the base of the victim's penis. It looks fairly recent, though I am surprised that Mister Parker had such a design at all near his genitalia. That is an area of the body most people don't tend to get tattoos on."

That confirmed it, then. The Succubus' Mark, was it official name; through some strange magic or another, victims of a succubus had pentagram tattoos appear on their genitals shortly after their initial copulation. The Society scientists had no idea what made that "tattoo", or whatever the hell that marking was, appear on the body, but it sure made identifying victims of a Succubus easy to do. If a Succubus had any sort of official calling card, that'd be it.

"Thank you, Doctor. And the contents of his stomach? Have you been able to identify what he ate in the last twenty-four hours?" Gabriela inquired further. It was a long shot, but maybe he still had something in his stomach from the time he slept with the succubus. Or at least, maybe his stomach contents would allow them to trace back his steps the last twenty-four hours.

At that query, Doctor Isaac gave another nod. He reached over for a notepad on a nearby table, refreshing his memory as he scanned the written contents. "Yes...I did find some things there. I'll need to wait for a toxicology report to determine what was in his system...but as far as I can tell, he has the remains of some sort of steak in his stomach. My guess, he ate somewhere fancy last night."

At least they had confirmed the succubus's involvement, Natalie mused to herself as she peered over the body. She glanced back briefly to Gabriela, but if she had any thoughts, they certainly weren't obvious, and likely for the best with the civilian doctor still with them. The question about his stomach contents could be a lead, but they couldn't track down every single restaurant in the city. But with luck, the initial investigation by the police might already made the first steps in retracting his steps.

"Ever seen anything like this before, Doctor?" She asked evenly, not specifying if she meant the mark or the manner of death. But both were certainly things most would remember easily, especially if it was a recent case. Of course, even if he hadn't, it was certainly likely that he would seen another quite soon, if the succubus was so sloppy. If not, they'd have to run down the other city hospitals. But at least now they were slowly working towards a start on the succubus's trail.

"I've seen some strange cases in my time, I'll admit. I once did an autopsy on a man completely drained of his blood; that was an interesting case, I'll say." Doctor Isaac stated, rubbing his chin in thought. The case he was referring to was no doubt a vampire attack...but, it wasn't their concern. More likely than not, other members of the Society had been sent in to investigate that. It wasn't as if a body completely drained of its blood, in New York City, would escape the notice of the Society.

"Far as something like this goes, I admit I have not seen a case like this. As things stand...well, Mister Parker's cause of death, I'd say would be due to the massive organ failure he suffered. As to WHAT caused that massive organ failure...I cannot say. I suspect some sort of poison, perhaps, or maybe a rare genetic disease...but until I get my toxicology report back, I can't say for certain. I could, however, ask around if you wish. My colleagues in the city may have found similar cases." the Doctor went on, voicing his own thoughts on the matter.

Gabriela nodded at all that. "Sure, Doc. We'd appreciate that. In the meantime...ah, I do have one last question. Do you know where the victim's effects are? Is that still here at the hospital?"

"Yes, they are! They're wrapped up in the other room. Let me go get them for you..." Doctor Isaac confirmed, before moving to head away from the main autopsy center, and toward the deeper recesses of the morgue.

"If we're lucky, we might find a receipt, or card, or something on the victim's possessions that could tell us where he was in the day leading up to his death. Worse comes to worse, we find out his credit card number, and we make some calls to have his bank records made available." Gabriela commented idly, voicing her own hopes and thoughts on the matter. If there wasn't a physical trail on the guy to follow, then a digital trail could give them a lead. They'd find out soon enough, either way.

But...as they waited, a subtle, yet still audible sound started reaching their ears. It took a moment to identify...but, it sounded like the slow drip of water onto a hard surface. Perhaps there was a leaky faucet in the room? But...something about that sound tugged at Gabriela's better instincts. Instead of ignoring it, she looked around the room, trying to trace the origins of the sound. She finally found it after a moment...revealing the source to be one of the cooler shelves morticians used to store bodies. But instead of water, the dripping substance looked a lot more murky and darker, in the dim lighting in the morgue...

Suspicions firmly raised, the more experienced Slayer gestured to the dripping cooler, getting Natalie's attention. She slowly drew her gun, and started walking toward the unit. When she reached it, Gabriela carefully pulled it open to reveal...

Well, there WAS body in it. Pretty fresh, too. There was still blood dripping from the slashed throat of the victim. And said victim had a startling resemblance to one Doctor Isaac.

"Fuck me raw," Gabriela swore, grimacing wide as she turned to stare at the door that 'Doctor Isaac' had disappeared through. "We're dealing with a fucking Changeling, too? That...changes things. Fuck, we're probably gonna have to call this in..."

Natalie nodded idly as she listened, pointedly not batting an eye at the oddity of a blood drained corpse. After all, an 'FBI agent' would have seen or at least heard of such odd cases before. Toxicology wouldn't find anything concrete, of course, but if they could connect it to other deaths in the city, and in conjunction with the victim's last steps, with hope they could narrow down the succubus's hunting grounds.

She shifted about impatiently as she waited once the doctor stepped out, idly glancing around the morgue, until she paused as she saw Gabriela tense and look around the room more carefully. She followed Gabriela over as she beckoned, reaching under her coat for her pistol as Gabriela did, and stepping up beside her.

"Shit." Natalie hissed as she looked over the corpse of the real Doctor Isaac. "We have to see if we can run that thing down before it gets too far. The hospital cameras might have seen it, even if it did shapeshift."

"Good point. We'll have to let the higher ups handle that...for now, we got a Changeling to hunt. Fuck me, I hate hunting Changelings..." Gabriela swore again, scowling fiercely as her mind whirled with thoughts. Whether or not the Changeling was connected to the succubus case, well...this changed everything. Until they could confirm it was either dead or out of the hospital, their new immediate priority was to hunt that thing down and put a bullet in its head.

"I'm calling in a strike team. If we're lucky, they can help back us up and lock down all the escape points." Gabriela announced, before taking her phone out of her pocket. She speed-dialed a number she'd been told never to dial unless it was an emergency...and, well, this seemed like one.

The line rang for two seconds, before someone picked up on the other hand. "This is Emergency Rapid Response Unit. What is your status, Inspector Thorne?"

"We've got a Code Alpha on our hands. Confirmed Changeling at Mercy General Hospital. Last known location is the morgue sub-basement area. Inspector Harker and I will be pursuing shortly." the senior agent quickly elaborated. There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line, before a response came back.

"Acknowledged. Strike Team Omega is en route now, and will be at the hospital in five minutes. In the meantime, do what you can to contain and kill the creature."

The call abruptly ended at that point, and Gabriela stowed her phone away. Hefting up her handgun, she glanced at the door the Changeling posing as Doctor Isaac had retreated.

"We sweep as many rooms down here as we can till the strike team arrives, or until we find the bastard. We shoot anything that moves down here, even if they might be civvies. There can be no hesitation. Ready?" the scarred older woman inquired, glancing at her partner.

They hadn't gone on a Changeling hunt before, and sometimes the newer, less experienced Inspectors balked at the draconian 'shoot anything that moves even if they're human' orders that were standard in such hunts. Hopefully Natalie wouldn't take much issue with that, though.

"Shit." Natalie hissed again, quickly drawing her pistol out from under her coat as she listened to Gabriela call in the backup. The changeling having a head start was far from good, especially if it'd been clever enough to pose so well as the doctor. The shapeshifting was one thing, but passing for a credible doctor was another.

The next order only made matters worse. Her fingers curled tightly around the grip of her pistol as she tried not to scowl at the thought. It wasn't unreasonable by any means, between the threat of the creature shifting again, or the bystanders seeing something they couldn't explain. But they certainly couldn't let the changeling escape, especially if it was working with the succubus, or worse.

"We have to cut any routes back upstairs." Natalie said, hurrying out of the morgue without another word, striding ahead with her pistol held low as she peered out up and down the hall, looking intently for any sign of the creature's trail.

Gabriela followed her, pistol drawn as the two experienced Inspectors eyed the hallway outside the entrance to the morgue area. The lighting was fairly decent, giving them a view up and down either way--

--And of course, the power chose to go out at that exact moment. The hallway was thus bathed in darkness, before dim, emergency lights flickered on.

"Shit. Musta gotten to the breaker down here, or something." Natalie's partner proclaimed. Scowling, the older woman turned on the flashlight extension mounted on her gun, bringing back some more lighting. She shined the light down both sides of the hallway, noting two doors and the end of the hall on the left side, and one door on the right, with the hallway curving around to another corridor on the right.

"All right...if I had to guess, going right might lead us to the parking garage for the morgue. Probably where ambulances offload dead bodies." Gabriela guessed...though without a map of the place in front of her, there was no way to be sure. "Could be a likely escape point. Or the Changeling is hiding in one of these rooms, waiting for us to take the obvious bait forward while it rushes back upstairs."

Much as she hated to admit it...they didn't have a lot of options here. Until the Response Unit arrived, it was just the two of them. They had to play it carefully here, otherwise they could lose the Changeling. Yet, taking time to think meant the Changeling could be getting further and further away...

The eternal paradox faced by a Slayer Inspector: did they try and take the time to guess the Changelings' move, or rush forward so they didn't burn more time?

"We might have to split up." Gabriela finally, reluctantly, noted. "There's a good chance the Changeling could be hiding in the garage, if there is a garage. That's the most likely place he coulda cut the power. Of course, that assumes the Changeling doesn't have help upstairs, and that's who cut the power..."

In fact, the more Gabriela thought about it, the more plausible the option seemed. If this Changeling was working with a Succubus, what other creatures could they be working with, that might also have snuck into the hospital? Shit, this was looking worse and worse the longer she looked at it...

"Shit. Well, whatever's happened, one of us needs to check to see where that hall leads. Maybe you stay here for now, make sure that thing doesn't double back and try to escape upstairs, while I look ahead. Or do you wanna brave the darkness, Natalie?" Gabriela inquired, glancing at her partner.

"Dammit." Natalie cursed once more with a tight breath as the lights flickered off. She fumbled to pull a small flashlight from her pocket, holding it up under the pistol raised in her other hand. "We can't let it out of the hospital. We'll never find it once it's out in the city and then backup's running here for nothing."

She grimaced at the thought of splitting up, in the dark, to chase after a Changeling. It was the least ideal situation possible. But they had to catch a lead somewhere and that creature was their only one, if they could even risk taking it alive. She stopped beside Gabriela, looking up and down the dark hall as she strained to consider quickly.

"We just have to cover the exits before it can get out." She stifled a nervous huff as she turned her flashlight and pistol to the darkened hall. "I'll keep going, you cover the stairs up." Natalie said, striding onwards without another word.
