The Slenderman Files

The Slenderman Files

Albany New York, 2012. After a catastrophic fire at an orphanage, a rash of abductions and other strange activity plagues the area.

486 readers have visited The Slenderman Files since Tearen Wover created it.

Albany New York, June, 2012: A multitude of sightings that match the appearance of the paranormal entity known as "The Slender Man" occur between the weeks of June 7th to the 10th. The ending of these sightings culminates in the supposed arson of a lesser known orphanage; St. Judith's Home for Children in Need. Though the fire results in the complete destruction of the orphanage, many escape with only minor one. Alex Jasenski, a young boy, goes missing. His body cannot be found in the ruins of the building, or in the greater Albany area.

Eyewitness accounts report one sighting of the "Slender Man" on the evening of June 10th, one of the nurses who ran the orphanage seeing "a really tall and thin seven feet tall almost, standing in one of the windows as the building burned. I think it was the smoke, but I couldn't make out his face."

Four months have passed since this incident, and sightings of the Slender Man are on the rise again, particularly in the wooded areas surrounding Albany. This time, however, a series of abductions have been reported, instigating a city-wide panic and search for the one responsible. At the scene of each crime, bloody notes are left. The messages vary most of the time, but the most consistent notes read "Too Late".

The general public recognition of these sightings has drawn a multitude of paranormal enthusiasts and cryptid hunters to the city, who usually are at odds with the locals, who hold the notion that these thrill seekers are exploiting their misfortune. Tensions are high, and results are fleeting. Many still are not aware of the myth of the Slender Man, and those who do still refuse to buy into it. The idea that some hoax that lives only in slipshod youtube videos and obscure message boards is out terrorizing civilians is considered simply idiotic. Official reports suspect that all this is the work of some kind of gang or cult. Regardless of belief, however, everyone agrees on one thing; something is very wrong in Albany New York.

Your role in this mess is to get to the bottom of what is really happening, to explore all possibilities, and above all else...survive.

Toggle Rules

If you're looking for a lengthy, mystery oriented sleuthing style RP game with a dark tone, then I believe you have come to the right place.

I don't have a list of rules so much as some general policy. First and foremost, I expect those who join to understand that while this is a roleplaying 'game', the most important part of this game is to create a good story. As such, writers should not be focused on 'winning' anything. If you just want to beat up bad guys, that's fine but this is not the place to do it, nor is it the place to do so in an over-the-top, immersion shattering manner. Furthermore, I expect people who join this game to be able to be their own advocates and be able to communicate with each other in a mature fashion. I'm running this game for my own enjoyment and I'd prefer not to be bothered with petty squabbles that should have been worked out with responsible communication. Finally, I expect writers to respect my judgement in any situation. My goal is to make this story fun for everyone to participate in, but to do so I need writers to trust me when I do certain things. I will state right here that, while I am aware there is a lot of 'canon' mythos surrounding Slender Man, I have my own ideas for what I want the entity to be and do. While I will still use much of the information that has already been established, I will ultimately be taking this enigmatic myth in my own direction. If you can't handle that, sorry.

If you can agree with all that, then we can continue.

Character Creation:

I would prefer that characters be more civilian in nature, and as such, I don't plan on seeing people who wield swords or have gratuitous firepower to be in the applications. This is not to say that such extraordinary characters will not be accepted, but I will expect them to have an extraordinary background. Ninjas, Mercenaries, and Vigilantes need not apply. The required fields for character applications are as follows:

Name: I expect names that you might actually hear in real life. Nicknames are fine for being kooky.

Ethnicity: Whatever you prefer

Sex: Is not limited to standard dimorphism

Hometown: Preferably in the United States. The game will take place over a series of months, which might be a long time for a non-native to be away from home hunting ghosts.

Profession: Important, as it will help define what three skills your character brings to the table.

Appearance: This can be detailed, but preferably not TOO long. A picture is fine so long is there a description to go with it.

Personality: Seeing as this will be a psychologically trying setting, a deeply defined personality and mind will go a long way.

Background: Important, especially for less plausible characters. Be sure to include a reason as to why they are up in New England hunting internet myths.

Sample: A writing sample of your character is not required, but will earn you lots of points towards acceptance

Skills: Pick three. Should reflect your character's profession and background.

Traits: May seem familiar to some. Should reflect your character's personality and background. When creating a character, distribute 30 points around the traits as you wish. A score of 0 for a given trait means your character is average in that trait. If you want, you can subtract points from a score of zero to add to another.

-Intelligence: Determines the ability to come to logical deductions and 'book' smarts.
-Intuition: Determines creativity and the ability to make effective gut decisions.
-Strength: Determines the amount of force your character can exert.
-Endurance: Determines how hard your character can push their body, and how much punishment they can take.
-Charisma: Determines how well your character can negotiate with and manipulate others.
-Finesse: Determines a character's fine motor control and how agile they are.

Character Death and Damage

Seeing as how this is a horror based RP involving the Slenderman, you are going to have to accept that misfortune is going to befall your character at some point. In fact, it is very likely that your character will die. Or go insane. The conditions for which are for me to decide. However, I should note that even though character death is likely, this will not be the end of their role in the story. How exactly your character will continue to contribute after their potential passing is a mystery I'm keeping to myself in order to keep things, well, mysterious.
