Johanna got up in the afternoon alike she always did after working all night. She sat at the vanity in her little room on top of the Snakebite saloon. She looked over at the bed where her last customer had been last night and sighed. She hated doing this but when your father cares more for gambling and drinking that his own daughter, theses sorts of things happen. She began to brush out her hair it would be a little while before she could use the tub the other more experienced girls always had first dibs. "Whats going to become of you Johanna, if you were a normal girl you'd be starting to think about who your going to marry and how many young-ins your going to have", she stood and walked over to the window and looked out on the town of Sweet Haven, "I wonder what Travis doing right now", she said aloud to the empty room. She noticed how her thought always traveled back to her childhood friend, back to a more innocent time. They now 18 year old Travis had taken the position of Sheriff a job that someone much older should have taken but no one had the gumption but him. "Jo!", Johanna turned to see Miss Kitty the madame standing in her doorway, "Yes mam" she said the older woman smiled at the young girl. Miss Kitty didn't like taking them so young as Johanna but its wasn't her choice with Johanna. "Sugar it your turn for the bath", said Miss Kitty. "Yes mam", said Johanna, the young 16 year old girl picked up the clothes she had set out before and made her way to the bathroom. The older woman smiled as the young girl walked past her, she didn't thin the young girl deserved her fate. But what could she do.

This seems to be a nice town, James noted with a smile, allowing his horse, Roan. Indeed, it was a small town, typical of the part of the country he traveled through. He did not like big towns. He liked to think that if the West remained a collection of small towns, then maybe his mother's people would receive their rightful land and white and red people could live in harmony.

He shook his head. That was but a dream. Men were born for conflict. He had seen too much of it over the years to believe otherwise. At least the land was pure. There was nothing men could do to taint the beauty of nature. He smiled approached the most prominent building in town, the saloon. The sign named it "The Snakebite Saloon". Perhaps that was an omen, in which case, he'll have to be on his guard. He dismounted and made sure he had his pistol and Henry repeating rifle were strapped on before entering. There had to be at least one table where a game of cards was in progress.

The gunslinger looked down upon the small town. His eyes, hidden behind the hood of his Poncho survey the whole scene from the cliff he stood on. It was larger than most he had been to, but also smaller than his favorites. The gunslinger turned and got up on his horse, which gave a small whinny as he turned it around and rode down the hill, entering the town on the side furthest from the sheriffs office. Riding through the town, towards the saloon he noticed a picture, posted to a nearby storefront. It was of a hooded man, the words on it said: Wanted dead or alive- Shade. 100,000$ reward. The store owner's gaze caught the gunslinger, he backed inside and shut his stores doors. A audible click could be heard as they were locked. Shade grinned a little. My reputation proceeds me He thought. Coming upon the saloon, apparently named 'the Snakebite saloon' he tethered his horse's reigns and went inside. The saloon was decant. Five or six tables, a piano player in the corner. Some card games going on. Shade barely glanced at the few other occupants, instead going up to the bar and taking a seat. "Whiskey, the best you have." He said, placing a few dollars on the bar. His gun was only just visible on his waste to anyone looking, though no one would have any idea about his sawed off shotgun hidden under his Poncho on his other side. His hood blocked out the key features of his face to anyone looking, only a few people had seen under the hood and lived. The hood was both a blessing and a curse, because of it anyone with half a brain would know who he was merely on sight. But in a heated chase he could easily turn a corner and discard the poncho completely, allowing him to escape because no one would recognize him.

"As you wish," Mister Michaels said pleasantly, sliding a shot of whiskey over to the hooded customer. It was strange to see a hooded man in his humble abode, but he got all kinds. He was far from discriminating. He smiled slightly as he returned to his record book. There were some who were unable to pay him until pay day, so he simply started tabs for them. Many, however, racked up debts they were unable to pay, debts which he kept in his book to collect with interest. The Grisom boys were far from the sort that made his customers comfortable, but they were shrewd debts collects. He had to give them that. Speaking of debts, he turned to an old page.

Johanna Fletcher- $500.25

He smirked and crossed it out replacing it with a new tally.

Johanna Fletcher-$525.25

Room and board for a month was costly, especially if she didn't provide the quota her father signed for in their agreement. He stood up, walking towards the stair and up onto the second floor to see Miss Kitty. He smiled oily at her, "What has our debtor raked in, last night?"

Kitty looked down at Micheals with a dirty look, she went to check her records, grumbling "She didn't like Micheals but his was the only place she could run her business properly. Johanna had four customers last night, at five dollars each so she made twenty, Miss Kitty nodded the girl was popular. But the way Micheals was chargin her she'd never pay him off, she sighed Johanna was the only one of her girls that he was charging that much for staying. She came out of her own room and walked down to the sleazy bartender, "She made twenty in one night what more could you ask of that girl Micheals really. She's popular you shouldn't be chargin her so much for being here. In fact you own her so I don't understand why your doing that anyway", she says with her hand on her hip while tapping her toe. Kitty new what it was like to be forced into this line of business after he husband was killed in a hold up she didn't have much of a choice. She looked at the man she couldn't say too much or she and all the other girls would be out on their rear ends. So she handed him the money that had been made the night before hoping it would shut him up for awhile.

"Impressive. She's paid off a bit of her debt with this," Mister Michaels commented. He may have been a scumbag, but as a businessman, he still followed his own rules, "Own her? No. That meddling sheriff made certain of that. He reminded me that slavery was illegal in this country and that he wouldn't hesitate in summoning a Federal Marshal. Sweet kid, that boy. I wonder if he fancied her... Ha. If he did, he does not now. No one fancies a whore."

He smiled slightly, pocketing the money and heading back to his place at the bar, making a mental note: Johanna Fletcher: $505.25.

Who said that the wicked didn't prosper?

Shade downed the whiskey in one gulp. Then sighed under his breath. Reaching into his pocket he pulled out ten dollars and placed them on the table. "Keep them coming till that runs out." He said, his eyes scanned everyone in the bar now, quickly and briefly. "I hear tell the son of Wild Bill resides in this town. You know anything about that?" His voice was calm, even. Unreadable, his right hand hung lazily down looking useless but in actuality it was placed carefully so that anyone who tried to shoot him or detain him would soon be met with six deadly shots. Wild Bill, poor old bastard, manged to die before i could kill him. He thought to himself. He thought of his childhood, the farm. The bandits and the training. "Draw your gun from the waste, like this boy. Less your looking to die before you live" He had been told, that amongst many other teachings that had honed him into the gunman he was today. He owed a lot to Wild Bill, and since he was dead. Shade had decided that the son would work all the same. "Never leave a dept unpaid boy" More words of wisdom. Shade noticed int he corner of his eye someone staring at him. Hmmm, what have we here.

Ursula peeked through the door to the Snakebite Saloon. Oh, she thought to herself, this is DEFINETLY not a place for a teenager.
Slowly, she creeped through the door, clutching her medicine bag. Her eyes flickered from one person to the next. Her first judgement of them were all the same: Hard-core; would shoot a little girl like herself without even caring. Drinkers. This was was way different than her Niimipuu home. She sat down in a corner, and rested her eyes.

Just as surely as these words were spoken, Travis stumbled in. Blood mixed with sweat from the rather large gash along his brow. The blood had already made a trail down his battered appearing face. The orbit of the eye itself was moderately swollen, causing the edges of his eye to almost draw to a close. Panting as though having been running, he had actually successfully fended of two Grissom Boy's members but they'd be back and in larger numbers. Relaxing his arms on the folding doors he walked in the stride of a proud but defeated young man. The badge attached to his soaked with sweat white cotton shirt.

His features would remind those of the late Wild Bill, but neither his stature nor his physique appeared any more frightening than the dames. Much to Travis's lament. He looked up at the board that slated the expenses of the establishment. Grimacing, his wounded eye flinched reflexively. He was outraged as always. He leaned on the bar taking the gloves off that carried the pungent odor of dead bodies that had sat out a bit to long, he laid them down with out a care.

"Bartender can I get a drink over here? I need something hard to knock out this migraine I have..." Travis grumbled, looking over to the man dresssed in a poncho.

"I heard you were looking for the kin of Wild Bill."

Shade gazed upon the man, no not a man really. More a boy than a man. He looked like he had been through hell, but even with a messed up face Shade could see the boy had a quite a bit of his father in him. The badge in particular caught Shade's eye. Not a deputy's badge, a sheriffs. Odd. He thought. "You hear correctly, sheriff. But before we get into that tell me, how does one so young come to bear a responsibility so large?" though the hood hid it, Shades eyes were starring directly into the boy's. He doesn't have the eyes, nor disposition of someone ready to kill. Yet at the same time, looks as if hes known hardship and pain. Poor kid, seems I'm not the only one Bill cheated in death. The thought of drawing on the sheriff, or making a hasty retreat never entered his mind. Judging from the youths reaction he like most of the town didn't recognize Shade on sight. Likely he wouldn't till Shade's name was dropped or a wanted poster noticed. Then, as Shade's old man used to say: "Hell rises high as the sky when the devil drops by."

James looked up from his card game at the sound of someone stumbling into the room. He raised an eyebrow at the boy's sheriff badge and turned to his companions. It was early, yet, but he had managed to win $10 worth of chips. Casually, he asked, "What's the story with that boy? He some kind of prodigy?"

"Pfft. Hardly," a man wearing a dirty white shirt and black hat across from him commented, placing a few chips in them middle of the table, "He got promoted out of necessity. Sheriff got killed in a shootout."

"Oh? Who by?" James questioned, matching the bet.

"God only knows. My money's on the Grisom's boys," the man stated, revealing two kings, beating the Jack and Seven and King and Nine of their companions. James smirked and revealed his hand, two Queens and an Ace. He raked in the chips.

"Interesting," he murmured, oblivious to the glares of his table companions as they switched to Poker. He listened intently to to the conversation between the masked man and the sheriff. He had a feeling... He looked up and noticed a new girl in the corner. One much too young to be hanging around in a saloon like this. He glanced around silently. He'd have to draw his gun if someone gave her trouble. Mister Michaels didn't cater to the most respectable classes of society, after all.

Mister Michaels grinned politely at Travis, pouring the man a shot of whiskey, "Really, Sheriff, you are going to kill yourself one of these days. I could use a permanent bouncer. God knows that that the upstairs needs one."

After Johanna got out of the bathroom and dressed she sighed, "Whats your problem green horn?"said on of the other saloon girls with some spite. Johanna knew that most of the other girls didn't like her, she had already heard words behind her back of her coming and stealing their Johns but Johanna didn't care. They volunteered their services here she didn't have a choice. She turned back at the girl, "Nothing", and she went to head back to her room other grabbed a hold of her and yanked it back. "You listen here little girl you need to go back to were ever you came from. But if you stay you better learn your place", she pushed Johanna forward and walked into the bathroom. Johanna stood there for a moment rubbing the sore spot on her scalp, "I don't have time for this i need to get to work she thought to herself", so she straightened her hair back and made her way downstairs.

Miss Kitty was going to have to talk to that other girl, there was no fighting between her girls.

Johanna made her way out into the saloon and bit her lip slightly when she saw that Travis was in the saloon. It broke her heart to see him he was in a horrible state, she went right to him, "Travis what happened", she said trying not to just cry and beg him to take her away from here.

Mister Michaels grinned politely at Travis, pouring the man a shot of whiskey, "Really, Sheriff, you are going to kill yourself one of these days. I could use a permanent bouncer. God knows that that the upstairs needs one."

Hearing the sloshing of the noticeably dark, richly caramelized malted beverage, Travis' first reaction, his only reaction was to drink. Drink for better days. Drink for days that were good, and of course drink for days that were down right shitty. But this time he grabbed the bartenders wrist keeping it over the counter. It would be noticeably bolstered and well muscled. Appearances aside he held a strong grip. One on one with someone he would perhaps be a worthy match up. But it wasn't just one on one. It was more like two on one. They had wanted to loot the dead

He clasped the shot glass in his right hand tipped it back eagerly. A life of hardships was only slight better with a few drinks in him. He hated himself for it intensely. His father was a drunk and Johanna's as well. Drinking and gambling was what placed here in the first place. He then caught the bar tender's arm with his hand. Travis looked up into the man's face.

" If you weren't such a coward and I wasn't wearing this badge I'd wipe that smirk off your face myself." He released the man's arm an turn towards the stranger with the poncho. All worked up from the bartender's response about Johanna. The fire in his eyes was pure, but now he was trembling. Not because he was afraid,if push came to shove he would obviously stand and fight. He was just incapable of doing anything in a town with only on sheriff, a boy still at that, and make a difference. He couldn't necessarily go run off and gun down every pickpocket and thief--or bartender. His heart was big, maybe too big but he stayed because loved Johanna.

"You hear correctly, sheriff. But before we get into that tell me, how does one so young come to bear a responsibility so large?"

"A drunk as father who likes to beat little boys cause he can't handle drinking. And look around you, you think any these people will do it? Someones got to stand for justice in this town," Travis looked towards the bar tender then over at Johanna. "So it mine as well be me. Now excuse me will you." Travis pardoned himself from the bar and headed over to Johanna.

"Johanna..." Travis said quietly, almost shy like. "You don't look to well, are you okay miss?" He carried his Texan accent with him, as well as his duties as sheriff which included formalities but for her he was always just that way.

Hell of a thing to go through. Yet a passion like fire itself Shade respected that. He merely nodded as the boy excused himself. Shades eye caught a wall of wanted posters behind the bartender, it was a small wall with only a few posters. Shade's was there, but half buried under three others. He'd make a good outlaw. He thought as he turned and looked at his once again empty glass. Then glanced at the bartender. Sighing to himself Shade stood up, reached behind the counter and grabbed the bottle of whiskey himself, pouring till the glass was full, then replaced the bottle back where he got it. His gaze went to the bartender, daring the man to say something as Shade casually placed his tomahawk on the counter, took a drink then began cleaning it. The unspoken message clear: I don't have a badge, and will gladly slice the smirk off your face if you so much as raise a finger. He then got up, sheathed his tomahawk and made his way over to a nearby card game. He sat down by the table, watching at first. "how much to buy in?" He asked.

Mister Michaels, being the coward that he was, only nodded at the sheriff, a bit of fear showing up before he masked it behind an impassive expression. The sheriff wasn't going to gun him down, he knew. He was too noble. The masked man at the bar poured himself a drink and he was about to object but, seeing the unspoken message, thought better of it.

Kid fancies her. Poor sods, James thought. He looked up at the newcomer and replied, "Buy-in's $5. The game's poker now."

Johanna smiled here he was beat and bruised and he was worried about her, that what she loved about Travis he was always the one to think of someone else before himself. Her own father could have used that same quality, after he kept the sleazy bartender at bay by giving up his daughter to the swindler. He left to get away from every problem that he had in small town of Sweet Haven. Johanna had no idea where her father scurried off to, but after he left her to the wolves she didn't much care no more. "I'm fine Travis, you need to get those wounds taken care of your gonna make yourself sick, and you wont do a soul no good sick", she took his hand in hers and led him up the stairs.

Miss Kitty nodded as the young sheriff came up, "Johanna honey you need some bandage and antiseptic?" , the older woman asked. She knew that Johanna had deep feelings for the young man that became the sheriff by default. He tried his best to run the small but wild town to the best of his abilities but there's only so much one man can do. Kitty when into her own room and came out, with an old cigar box filled with bandages, "Here Johanna take care of him", said the older woman with a smile. Johanna couldn't help but smile sweetly at Miss Kitty, and took the box from her, "Thank you mam", she said. She took Travis's hand "Just sit down at the vanity", she asked she knew he would probably protest everything but she wasn't one to let him go around in pain. Even when they were children he was always trying to protect her. She walked up to the water basin on her vanity and poured so water in the bowl, taking a clean wash cloth from one of the vanity's drawers. She hummed to herself, dropping the cloth into the cool water in the basin, letting it soak before picking it up again and wringing it with both of her hands. "This should help some", she said as she walked to him with the cloth in her hands. But deep in the back of her mind she prayed that he wouldn't be turned off by her new status in the Snakebite Saloon.

At first she had thought that Mister Micheal's would have been kind and might just make her take orders and wait tables in the saloon. But Mister Micheal's concern was only about how much money he could get. Finding Johanna to be quite the looker, he immediately turned Johanna over to the kind Miss Kitty. Miss Kitty explained to the naive young woman what kind of work the old bartender was expecting of her and how to cope with the profession. Johanna sat there with her mouth agape for awhile letting it sink in as to what her life would be now, when it did the older woman just held her as she cried.

Shade pulled out five and placed it on the table. "Deal me in." He said. He leaned back in the chair and let this gaze fall to the cards. The backs of the cards were a kind not found in most saloons, so the aces in his bag would be useless. Not that he had a notation to cheat in this game, he wasn't in need of a quick buck currently. Being fresh off a job in Dodge he was set financially for a while, this game he would play for fun. His thoughts wandered as he thought about Dodge, it was a good sturdy place for a man of Shade's profession to make a living. Till the heat got to hot at least, then you hightail it outta town firing bullets behind you. Shade took a drink of his whiskey, and pulled out a coin which he absentmindedly began dancing on his knuckles. He could use the same trick with a bullet to hypnotize someone, an old trick taught to him by a veteran gunslinger he encountered about eight years ago. Around the same time he got his tomahawk. He took another drink, savoring the whiskey. If this is the best whiskey they have, I'm a farmer. Oh well, it will work for now.

The brim of his hat was tipped down over his eyes, and the sleeves of his blue shirt rolled up to just above his elbows, showing a shimmer of sweat on his arms when the sunlight hit him at the right angle. Rob was used to hard work, he was far from lazy but he appeared weary as if he was fed up with his work for the day and was seriously considering riding into town. He could have done that, but he wouldn't want to leave the ranch on it's own where his careless brother probably wouldn't finish off the last jobs of the day.

"See ya' in the morning Rob." Terry, the old cattle handler walked past Rob with his bag slung over his shoulder kicking up the dust with his muddy boots.

"See ya later." Rob replied nodding his head in acknowledgment of one of his loyal employee's finishing off for the day.

Busily, Rob returned to brushing down the horse he had used on the cattle fields today. The horse had worked up a sweat in the heat of the sun and now Rob was busy making sure that the horse was clean enough for his night in the corral with the other horses. Rob took great pride in all his animals, especially his horses. Alfie, his loyal Border Collie dog was laying a few feet away from Rob and the horse in the shade of a tree napping after an afternoon of running around in a craze.

Finishing off, Rob led the horse over to the corral where five other horses stood dozing in the late sun, and Rob headed towards the large ranch house that was situated towards the far end of the barns with a small stretch of grass separating it from the ranch land.
