Evangelaine "Lane" Broke

Who's got time for tea when the weather is so perfect for hunting?!

0 · 269 views · located in Stillworth Manor

a character in “The Stillworth Agreement: Stillworth Manor”, as played by lovechanningforever

Description

Evangelaine "Lane" Broke
Image

Gender: Female
Age: 15 years young
Occupation: The Youngest Daughter in the Broke household and has no job whatsoever as of the moment.
Changes from picture: A skirt would be the last thing young Lane would be friends with, she greatly thinks they are a massive nuisance to her hunting trips and daily forest adventures.
Likes/Dislikes:
+The forest
+Hunting
+Wearing her pants like men
-Skirts!
-Brushing her hair
-Learning how to sew, dance and act all lady like
History: Having no son, William Broke adjusted with the fact that even if he was blessed with daughters, one of them can always share his passion for hunting. Which is why he allowed his youngest daughter to watch from a distance as he slowly opened a new world for her. On the another perspective, Lane always saw their father as her super hero. She is always amazed at the things that he does and vowed to be as great as he is even if a lot of people tell her that she's a girl and should do otherwise.
And everyone thought Lane would stop her nonsense when her father passed away. But she proved everyone wrong, she firmly believe her father's spirit guides her everything she's in the forest. She claims he would whisper the rabbit's direction and thus she comes home with one or a couple in a rope ready for stewing. She knows that her older sister sister Vivian hates her for hunting animals but she'd rather have her sister get mad at her than seeing their whole household getting sick of just bread and root crop everyday.
Lane knew her father had trouble with finances even before he died, she just didn't speak openly about it because she thought he had it under control. And besides she knew no one would believe her. They would just tell her to mind her own business like a proper lady.
Of course, Lily got really sad and emotional from the passing of her most favorite person in the world but she just puts his words in to mind to be strong and courageous for her family.
Personality: Being the youngest and closest to their father, Lane was often dubbed as a spoiled brat. Especially by her sister Vivian while their oldest sister just shakes her head at their arguments.
One would also say that she got her hard headed-ness from her father, aside from being a spitting image of her father (her sisters who are often regarded as pretty, looked more like their late mother), Lane also got their father's personality.
Strong and courageous, Lane is not the person who'd back out even if her knee is already bleeding.
However, Evangeline is still a girl, which is why she also gets insecure whenever people would comment how wild and un-lady like she is compared to her two sisters. So instead of letting those comments affect her, she'd rather show them how great she is with the skills she learned while growing up.

So begins...

Vivian awoke to the cold of a winter's breeze outside of her window, she looked out at her view of the white garden knowing how much she'd miss it when she'd leave. She then remembered it was almost time to go. She walked over to her wardrobe and pulled out a beautiful green dress. There was intricate lace going up the sides and under it was cream colored fabric. She always loved the color green, it reminded her of the trees.

Once Vivian was dressed and ready she left her room and went into Clarisse's. "Bad morning Clarisse, I hope we are late. Maybe then they will all dislike us and ignore us most of the time." Vivian chuckled at her comment and then left the room to see her younger sister Lane.

Lane was still in her bed sleeping when she got there. "Lane, wake up, my god you have been sleeping since sundown yesterday." Vivian walked over to the bed and started shaking her. Lane started to stir and she opened her eyes thinking there was a fire or something, she jumped out of bed.

"What happened? Is something wrong!?" Vivian laughed at her reaction and started walking out the door.

"Be ready soon we are going to the Stillworth manor today, you don't want to be late do you, you little brat."

Already awaken by the sunlight that hit her window pane dully, Clarisse had her luggage already packed. It had seem that she was up all night long getting her things ready but she just knew how to pack her bags fast, they already standing in front of her door way with a slouch. Clarisse, just like Vivian and Evangelaine, didn't want to move away and seeing that their mother was still in a sad state of affairs, she really didn't want to leave her behind.

But a relative stopped by into town and offered to take care of their mother while they were away, paying off "debts". This unnerved Clarisse a little, the amounting tension in her brain easing. "Bad morning Clarisse, I hope we are late. Maybe then they will all dislike us and ignore us most of the time.", the sound of Vivian's droned and monotone voice filled Clarisse's room momentarily. Clarisse smirked and shook her head a little without turning to see her baby sister, "You minds well get used to working full time. Our father's debts need to be paid off some way. It's either work for the Stillworth's or live on the streets....or even worse, be put in jail for fraudulence".

By the time Clarisse finished what she had to say, Vivian went off to her youngest sister, preparing to nag her to death. Clarisse rolled her eyes and began to head out of her room. Before she walked down the steps with a lot of luggage in her hands and back, she stopped to see herself in the mirror. No longer the youthful, prim and proper, respectable beautiful lady, she looked "common" and haggish looking, almost looking like an old maid. A small frown slipped onto her face but she shook the emotion off right away. "Why father, why leave us like this...", she whispered to herself, thinking of her father with a slight depressing but irritated mood.

"Lane, wake up, my god you have been sleeping since sundown yesterday!"

"What happened? Is something wrong!?"

"Be ready soon we are going to the Stillworth manor today, you don't want to be late do you, you little brat!"

That was all Clarisse could hear in the wee hours of the morning and it was starting to annoy her to death, "Knock it off, you two and start getting ready!", she yelled from downstairs up to them. Clarisse put some of the luggage down, pressing two fingers to the bridge of her nose with irritation, "What's going on?!", their mother shouted to all of them with much anger in her voice. Clarisse shot her head up towards the top of the steps. Their mother looked more upset and pissed, "I'm sorry mama, we didn't mean to be so loud. We're just trying to get ready. Go back to bed, alright?", Clarisse told her mother reassuringly with much gentleness.

Their mother walked into Lane's room where the two were about to get into another argument, "Don't start today; I'm not in the mood. Start getting ready. It's bad enough I don't want none of you to go...Just please". She began to slump slightly against the door with a lot of exhaustion. The past couple of months of mourning over their father and having bouts of depression took its toll on her. Her eyes were red and swollen and her body looked frail and small. She looked like she went through hell, satan himself putting her through much agony and pain.

"God, have mercy on me....", a tear started to roll down their mother's eye as her fragile body began to slump even more against Lane's door frame. Clarisse immediately rushed up the steps and went over to their mother and tried to keep her body up from falling down again, "Mother, please... Let's not go there. We will all be alright...", the platinum blonde being strong as best she could and a solid rock for everyone. The next chapter in their life was going to be rough and jagged, the prospects of them all going to make it out alright a slim chance to none....

Vivian turned to their mother and Clarisse who were still standing in the doorway. "Well, I'd best pack up now." She glared at her little sister and then shoved passed the other two being sure to bump them a bit. She walked slowly and gracefully back to her room pretending not to care about anything that was happening. She got her luggage and brought it downstairs to the waiting man. He was supposed to drop them off at their new home soon. They actually should have left by now, it looks like they might be a bit late after all. Vivian ran back upstairs helped her younger sister throw some stuff into a bag and brought that to the man as well.

"Come on you two! The man is waiting, I am sure then Stillworths are as well." Vivian exited to house and helped the man put the luggage into the car. She opened the door and sat down without saying a goodbye to her mother. It was quite rude of her, but when Vivian was annoyed she refused to be the least bit pleasant to anyone, unless she was in the garden that is. While waiting for her sisters to get in she took out a paper and a quill, she started drawing a tree surrounded by beautiful flowers. She had already finished once her sisters had gotten into the car. "What has taken you so long? All of your bags were already down here."

Vivian and her sisters got settled in the back of the carriage and the man started moving the carriage. As Vivian patiently waited hoping they would be late Clarisse and Evangelaine talked about how different it would be, the girls hadn't ever done much work besides helping their mother cook or cleaning their rooms before, but it couldn't be that hard, could it?

Vivian listened to her loud sisters hearing nothing but "Yeah, this will be very new." and "I can still hunt right?" That last one made Vivian cringe. Why would she hurt poor animals that hadn't done anything to her in her life? I mean sure, she made use of it by eating it but why on Earth would you want to take up such a sport? Not only is it dangerous it is also cruel.

Vivian then started thinking about how cruel it was for her mother to make them work. She was sick of helping her mother. Was she capable of anything? Sure she gave birth to three children but then what did she do? Mothered the first perfectly, let her husband father the third, and completely ignore the second. Not that Vivian resents her for it or anything. Well maybe she did, but she was way to proud to admit to it.

The sisters heard the driver stop the carriage and they opened the doors. They got out bags in hand and started walking to the front door. Vivian got out last and slowly followed them, she looked off to the side of the huge house and saw a beautiful little garden complete with trees to climb and flowers to smell. Vivian already knew she would be spending most of her time there.

Their mother sure wasn't used to the harsh realities of life, making the transition a large drama scene then need be necessary but she grew up in a lap of luxury, things done and being handed to her. There were people taking care of her and running her life for her; basically she was coddled to death, not knowing how to make it on her own. That wasn't good because it made their mother useless of being a REAL mother and taking on REAL responsibilities. Clarisse settled her mother down back in her room, putting her back into bed gently while her sisters rushed down the stairs, bags packed now, and out the door, into the carriage waiting for Clarisse.

"Mama, our aunt will be here in an hour so just rest right now."

"That's nice...I need someone here with me while I rest."

"Very much indeed. Now I'm going to go now. Take care of yourself..."

"Give us a kiss...."

Her mother kissed Clarisse on the forehead, weakly. Clarisse forced a tear back as she slowly walked backwards out of the room. Her mother closed her eyes slowly and before Clarisse even made it down the steps, she was out like a light, tossing and turning as usual when she was having her monthly nightmares. Clarisse shook herself awake by jerking her back up a little; it was a weird gesture when trying to stay awake but it worked perfectly for her. She picked up her bags, and some of her younger sisters bags once more.... Was she the "bag lady" now?

Clarisse shook her head, irritation settling as she walked out the front door, walking down the thick brick steps with large striding steps. It made her look like she was walking like a man. Well she had to be the head of the household, taking over her father's duties of watching over and protecting the family, so she was the new "man of the house" since there wasn't any male siblings born between their mother and father. It made the situation very awkward but it HAD to work. "Come on you two! The man is waiting, I am sure then Stillworths are as well.", Vivian pepped up as Evangelaine got into the carriage with a large plop with Clarisse following in behind.

"Alright you two, here's how it goes, I'll be watching over you and taking on responsibilities that was taken on, previously, by father. You two our my responsibilities as well and I don't want anything to happened to you or you getting in trouble with anyone at the manor because it will fall into my lap with a BIG thud. Literally! So I want you to listen to the head butler who is the head of taking care of the house. I hope you please do as he says and DON'T disrespect him. I know I'm mostly clear about what I'm saying and you know what's going down so I shouldn't have to explain anymore.", Clarisse emphasizing on some words, instructing and demanding what she was expecting of them.

The carriage was already moving, making it to its destination. The ride seemed short even though, in actuality, it took some miles to get there. Clarisse and Evangelaine talked about things that they would have to do at the manor as soon as they got there while Vivian sat quietly, looking like a nervous wreck. She didn't have to actually look like it but Clarisse knew her too well and could read subtle hints on her person that gave it away. Vivian still hated her parent's, particularly, their mother and couldn't understand why their mother was in the state she was. It was like she was aloof and detached of feeling any remorse. After all though, she was also still young and trying to figure out what she wanted out of life so that might be reasonable but not totally.

The drive quickly came to an end, the carriage stopping in front of the entrance to the manor. The manor loomed over them with an oppressing shadow. It was in fact winter and literally gray outside so it added to the manor looking more intimidating then usual. This didn't scare Clarisse in the bit, or the other sisters, since their minds were so focused on trying to be presentable as best as possible in front of their new employer, family, and any house guests.

"Remember what I said ladies...", Clarisse silently said to them as they stepped, one by one, out of the carriage, heading up the large marble steps with bags in hand. They began to wait in front of the door nervously: Vivian impatiently scowling and focusing her attention on a garden that was nearby, Evangelaine twiddling fingers and curiously looking around, and Clarisse straightening up her posture and going over per-made lines in her head on what she was suppose to say to the Stillworth family. "It's showtime girls.", sarcasm, surprisingly harsh, coming from Clarisse's voice.

Leaves crunching as her fast foot steps run after the very familiar built of a man. How she missed seeing him and spending time with him. It has been a while since the two of them did their hobby together. Somehow Lane couldn't remember the reason why, she knew father always made it a point to go hunting at least once a week. So how come he hasn't asked her for a few weeks already?

Lane knew that the answer was at the back of her mind but she just couldn't point out what exactly it is.

She continued to run after him but he was incredibly fast, not very much like the father she knew. She always out run him, so where does he get the extra energy?

"Father! Wait for me!" Lane tried to call out but the words just streamed in her thoughts. No words came out of her mouth and her throat felt parched. "Father! What is happening?!" A sudden blow of wind made her stop in her tracks. Her spine tingled even if she was wearing warm clothes. Soon her surroundings were filled with fog and she could barely see her father's outline beyond the mist.

"Father! Help!" She tried to call out again. But he just stood there- frowning.

Then the ground began shaking, she tried to hold on to something but all she could see is rectangle dirt hole that has been dug out for a casket. The shaking continued, it made her look around once again and her gaze back at the pit where she saw her father lying inside a coffin with his eyes closed. Then everything rushed back to her conscience, Father's dead.

The shaking grew stronger until she saw herself falling into the pit and was awakened by a familiar voice, "Lane, wake up, my god you have been sleeping since sundown yesterday."

"What happened? Is something wrong!?" Vivian laughed at her reaction and started walking out the door.

"Be ready soon we are going to the Stillworth manor today, you don't want to be late do you, you little brat."

She frowned upon Vivian's words. How could she be so mean at a morning like this?! Is it not enough thought that it is the day they would be leaving Mother and become slaves to some unknown family.

Lane grumbled and pulled the sheets away from her body, she stood up and looked over the bedroom window in her nightgown to see the white snow covering their yard. She sighed- it was the perfect day to hunt for a fox when all of a sudden she heard a voice she has been avoiding all through out her puberty stage- Mother.

"Don't start today; I'm not in the mood. Start getting ready. It's bad enough I don't want none of you to go...Just please" She was frantically walking around grabbing some of the things they weren't able to pack and saw the thing that Lane dreads the most. A brush.

Mother quickly paced from one end of her room to her vanity mirror and quickly grabbed her. She made Lane sit in front of the mirror and started brushing her unruly hair. Trying to smooth it out and removing the tangles. Not even bothering to stop even if Lane was crying out in pain.

"Mother! Oww!!! Stop! Please..." But she was deaf to Lane's plea. Soon she was able to remove every knot in her hair and amazingly did a good job with Lane's hair. On top of her head was a beautiful head dress that would perfectly go with her dress. But her scalp was burning and Lane knows that the beautiful product wasn't worth the pain. She stomped towards her dresser and grabbed her dress. She hid behind her changing partition and started getting dressed when Clarisse came and pulled Mother away. She was glad her sister was there to prevent her from getting any more pain. But she had to pause when she saw the sadness in her sister's eye. It made her sad, Lane does think her mother is too much for making her wear skirts and almost pulling her scalp away but she'll definitely miss her. It is bad enough that Father died and they had to move miles away.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Evangelaine stepped out of their mansion, looked up and took a final glance at the place she was born and grew up. She had every side and entrance memorized and soon she has to forget about them. She has to grow up and become a lady for her family. She needs to leave the old Lane behind and as much as she doesn't want to- she has to.
Being a maid is far less worse than having no house and spending the rest of their lives in poverty and in prison. Hopefully, the Stillworth's wouldn't be as bad as she thought they would be.
"Come on you two! The man is waiting, I am sure then Stillworths are as well." Vivian's loud tone has once again shaken her back to reality. Lane had to wipe a tear away and breath in cold air to clear her head before she turned her gaze towards the carriage and walked on. She didn't have the heart to say goodbye to Mother or everyone else would probably have to drag her dead body away before they can make her leave.
"Alright, alright! Sheesh, its not like we are off to fairyland Vivian!" She muttered under her breath as she carelessly got inside, not minding if her dress would get wrinkled. Clarisse followed suit and soon they rode off. The image of the Broke mansion slowly becoming small until it was no where in sight.
It was Clarisse who started making things clear and spoke about the first rules in their new lives. But there was only one thing that mattered the most so she asked away, "I can still hunt right?"
She felt Vivian cringe when she asked but she didn't care, she loved messing with her sister's mind as a revenge for picking on her most of the time. But Clarisse just smiled at her and continued, "Alright you two, here's how it goes, I'll be watching over you and taking on responsibilities that was taken on, previously, by father. You two our my responsibilities as well and I don't want anything to happened to you or you getting in trouble with anyone at the manor because it will fall into my lap with a BIG thud. Literally! I know I'm mostly clear about what I'm saying and you know what's going down so I shouldn't have to explain anymore.", Emphasizing on some words, instructing and demanding what she was expecting of them.
Then the carriage came to a halt as a magnificent and even bigger mansion stood before them. The court was also covered in white and it didn't exactly help with the cold image of their new residence for the years to come. "Oh boy, I hope they wouldn't be as cold as Vivian." She couldn't help but quip, she knew Vivian was staring daggers at her but she chose to ignore it as she stood beside her sisters.
"Oh boy, I hope they wouldn't be as cold as Vivian." Evangelaine giggled at her comment. Vivian glared at her wishing just for that second looks really could kill. Then she wouldn't have to deal with that annoying little twit. However since human beings were in fact animals, Lane being more so than some other humans Vivian has known, it would go against the no hunting attitude Vivian took on. Oh how she hated such inconveniences.
Vivian just wanted to drop her bags on the floor get on the carriage and go back to her homes garden, well I guess she shouldn't call it her home anymore. Vivian holding back her tears sped up making each footprint in the white blanket farther apart than before. She walked ahead of her two sisters wanting to be the first one into the house so she could look at the annoying new house owners.
She had assumed they would be stuck up rich jerks like her parents were, always wanting for more and killing any animal they wished to eat it even if they were't even hungry. Vivian despised people who just hunted for fun, having they dead animal heads hanging above them on the wall as they sat on a couch talking about how fun it is to kill. It is quite murderous. You should only kill if it is absolutely necessary for your life, you don't see starving bunny rabbits attacking humans for food. What f you had just killed a rabbit trying to bring food home to his ten children and his mate? Wouldn't you feel the least bit guilty?
Realizing she had been thinking way to much about the poor hares she snapped herself out of her thoughts and walked a bit further till she reached the front doors. She placed her hands on one of the doors slowly as if to not let anyone notice what she was doing. She thought "What have I gotten myself into..." and knocked on it quietly. a man came and opened the door, he was in butler attire. she peered into the doorway and saw three other men standing there staring back at her and she blushed slightly embarrassed. She walked through the door fully and stopped inside faking being confident and in no way sad for leaving her old house. She set her bags down on either side of her and faced the men with a bored expression. "Hello, Stillworths."
Finally they were all greeted inside as Vivian was the first to make an appearance in front of the Stillworth's, well rather she flaunted herself in front of them with much arrogance as usual, "Hello, Stillworths". She also looked very embarrassed and red in the face, Clarisse seeing Evangelaine secretly smirking behind her. Nervousness over took Clarisse as well and she could somewhat sympathize with her sisters who were, shall we say, on the "hot seat". Then a brunette man, presumably the head of the house named Matthew, came up to them with such elegance and grace, "Ah, you must be Vivian. It is a pleasure to finally meet you Madam. Oh and Evangelaine and Clarisse. I hope your carriage ride was comfortable and short.".
He seemed very well mannered and quite sophisticated, "He must be the eldest of the Stillworth boys...", Clarisse making a mental note of him. But she sure wasn't buying none of his charms, not really focusing on his appearance but by the tone of his voice. It sounded very faked and strained, like he was putting on a show just to "keep up appearances". Clarisse's facial expression somewhat flattened at that, she keeping a neutral face as she shrugged off her heavy grey trench coat. "Would you please have their bags placed in their rooms and please, give them something hot to drink. It isn't the warmest day.", he said to the head butler named Wilfred.
Clarisse also made another mental note to herself knowing that she was going to get along fine with Wilfred, "He seems very kind...". "Please, go relax as your rooms are made appropriately.", Matthew smoothly added as he shut the door behind them. Clarisse could see everyone there eying them up and down, making mental notes about their persons, "Oh boy, here we go...", she thought to herself as her coat and some of her luggage was taken from her by Wilfred. She straightened up her posture even more and tried to put a pleasing smile on her face. She wasn't going to make first impressions a sour one so she did her best to be polite and cordial. "The carriage ride was fine, Sir. I'm glad to be of service and we hope you will enjoy our service.", Clarisse spoke up finally to Matthew and to everyone.
''Ah, you must be Vivian. It is a pleasure to finally meet you Madam.'' One of the men said. Vivian rolled her eyes with a bored expression on her face, she sighed loudly and looked down to the floor. She didn't believe a single thing he said, she was still assuming they were all just rich jerks, except the butler who seemed fairly neutral. Vivian didn't want to have any relationships with these men though, she refused to talk or look at them more than she was required to, she wouldn't do what they told her unless it was a direct order, she had wanted absolutely nothing to do with them. If they talked to her she would simply ignore them. Perhaps she would be a little kinder if she was in the garden but Vivian could never be to sure about what she would say or do, no one could.
Clarisse had started going on about how she was happy to be here and how she hoped they would enjoy our services, whatever. They better enjoy our services. Vivian was forced into this she shouldn't have to do her mothers job because she needed to "rest" and it was her unintelligent father's mistakes that had started this whole thing in the first place. Why should she have to do things for them that they never did for her? She was practically ignored by them her whole life. I guess what people say about being the middle child was true after all. Mother gave Clarisse all her attention and Lane got her fathers, no one was left for Vivian. She hid her jealousy as she started wandering around the house leaving her coat on for later.
The eager girl turned corner after corner and entered hallway after hallway until she eventually found herself at the side door leading to the garden. She smiled widely happy to have finally found what she had been looking for for so long. She opened up the door and walked outside seeing the glistening white blanket over the whole garden. She located a tree with very little snow on it taking off her shoes. She didn't mind the cold she had been going outside barefoot forever just to go into the garden. She placed her shoes next to the tree she had chosen and started climbing her way up. Once she had gotten high enough she sat down on a sturdy branch and looked at the beautiful view she had of the snow covered trees.
Vivian finally got settled at her now favorite place of the Stillworths manor (also the only place she liked so far) and took out a notebook and her drawing supplies from a pocket in her coat. She had sewn the coat so the pockets would perfectly fit them both. Thinking of an image to draw she decided she'd make it winter related. She started outlining a frozen over pond surrounded by leaves that had fallen the previous season. She then outlined a bench next to it. There were two people sitting on the bench, a girl and a boy. The girl had resembled Vivian quite well and the boy was faceless. She started to wonder if she would ever find the right person to fill the face in. She assumed she hadn't yet because she was so stubborn and rude to everyone she met. Well, if she grew old and died alone she would only have herself to blame.
She started filling in some of the details, starting with the trees in the background. She had drawn some evergreens covered in small groups of snow throughout them. She then drew the clothes of the girl and boy, they were both cuddled closely trying to find warmth in the cold wearing warm jackets and hats. She drew birds flying in the sky because what was a picture without animals? Finally she drew a dog on the ground next to the bench staring up at the girl. It was wagging its tail and its tongue was hanging out of its mouth. She laughed at the adorable dog feeling proud of her drawing. She then put her drawing materials away leaving the picture out. She sat in the tree just staring at it for a while.
Wilfred nodded his head as each of the Broke girls entered the house. Vivian, Clarisse and Evangelaine each very different in there personalities, this difference being so obvious that Wilfred had already picked up on it before Matthew had told him to take their bags. He walked towards them and picked up some of the larger bags. "Do you like tea?" He asked before he turned around to take the bags to each of their rooms.
After hearing the reply he said, "If you take a seat in that room I shall be with you very soon." He gestured towards the front room of the house as he spoke. The room had a large window that looked out onto the entrance way that belonged to the house. As a result of this Wilfred spent quite some time in there waiting for house guests to arrive and as a result of his presence the room was very clean indeed.
Once he had finished speaking he began to move the bags into the rooms. Returning every so often to get more of them. It was a tiring job for someone of his age but he had grown accustomed to it and so it caused him no trouble.
William heard a loud noise coming from downstairs which alerted him to he fact that he had to do something today. The event on his agenda had escaped him however as, being an artist, he spent most of his time doing the same thing so time passes at a speedy pace. He flicked his notepad open and glanced down the page that he kept important information stored on. Around half way down 'BROKES' was written in bold letters, which was his way of showing it's importance.
He thought that they may of been here by now, the sun was in the sky showing the people of London that the day had begun, and so he quickly jumped out of his dirty chair and walked to his door. As he did this he avoided several painting, sketches and even an unfinished sculpture of a birds skeleton, the room was about due a visit from Wilfred but there was no way William would let him remove his treasures. quickly he left and joined rest of the houses residents by the door.
Wilfred stood tall and proud as ever, Matthew's tired eyes awaited the girls arrival anxiously and Louis was covered by water. He was unpredictable to William, never seeming to be completely there as if his mind lived in a far away land. However, Louis' mind was not his business and right now he just wanted to focus on the arrival of the girls.
As they entered the door one by one he observed them, taking in their appearances and creating assumptions on there characters. This was something William did often but did not yet think of himself as good at it, what happened next however proved him wrong. The one he believed to be the middle sister spoke harshly towards them, something that he predicted by the way she walked into the house. She didn't seem to want to be there, which was fine as far as William was concerned because he couldn't imagine himself being thrilled about working for a wealthier family in order to avoid living in poverty.
The eldest girl was doing well to give of a good impression however, she entered the room looking slightly nervous as she wouldn't of known what was going to happen for the next part of her life. William also didn't know what was going to happen for the girls but he did know, it was certainly going to be different. The final Broke daughter had a face full of youth and didn't seem to say anything during their initial meeting. William presumed this was because, being a young girl, she would of been feeling shy around the new people that stood before her and the walls of a new home that surrounded her.
It wasn't long after the short greetings that Wilfred and Matthew had left the enterance hall, both busy with their work, and so William found himself looking down to find a large paint stain on the brown shirt that he had been wearing all night. Imediatly he looked up at the girls and spoke, "I will be with you soon. Make yourself at home in there." HE pointed to the room that Wilfred had mentioned just earlier before going of to change his clothes in his study.
As Vivian haughtily rushed towards the main entrance of the mansion, Lane couldn't help but giggle. "One point," She muttered to herself. The entire trip was not that long but it wasn't exactly something to look forward to, it was- after all the start of their new lives and Lane couldn't help but divert her emotions and what better way to perk herself up than poking fun at her other sister.
But as soon as they followed Vivian behind, she was silenced by the presence of the man who appeared to be the Stillworth's butler. Then her gaze was caught by two other men who were later on joined by an aristocratic man with a stain on his under shirt. Everyone changed pleasantries while Lane oogled on. One can say that the cat caught her tongue as she continued to roam her gaze at the magnificence of the mansion.
The butler introduced his self as Wilfred while the three younger were named William and Matthew with their cousin Louis who looked like he would pass out anytime. Lane had to bite her tongue to prevent herself from giggling out loud. The brothers looked like they haven't seen sunshine for days while the cousin looked like he would fine solace in sleeping even on a hard and cold floor.
And at the corner of her eye, Lane could see how annoyed Vivian has become while Clarisse did her best to look honorable in front of their new masters. Oh come on Clarisse, after all these nice compliments they would soon bite our heads off if we make a mistake with their orders. Lane thought and puffed a heavy sigh.
Everyone continued talking and Lane decided to keep quiet when a magnificent sight caught her attention. She slowly walked towards the partially open door and saw before her a room that could have served as a trophy room. There were hunting guns and machetes hung on the wall as mounts of taxidermy mesmerized her. Then her thoughts were disturbed by footsteps scurrying around as the people dispersed. She heard Wilfred talk about the waiting room and ushered them towards it then left to take care of their luggage.
Lane still doesn't know what to do so she decided to sit in the parlor and waited for the butler for further instructions. She looked around as she tried to sit still. She can't wait to run off and change into her "clothes" so she can explore the house, the yard and whatever was beyond the Stillworth's estate.
"Clarisse, do you think we have to do house work at once?" She asked without looking at her sister, she was busy fumbling with a n eccentric piece of wood. "I just wondered if I can look around after Wilfred talks to us." She smiled and tried to act nice so her sister won't suspect a thing.
And out of nowhere she decided to ask and blurt out, "I think the Stillworth men are crazy. I mean one looks like he is in another world, one shows up with a stain and one could barely wake up!" She suddenly covered her mouth, her eyes wide open and turned to see if anyone had heard her.
It was starting to snow, it got colder and colder and darker and darker. Vivian decided it was time to go inside. She jumped down from the tree and replaced her boots on her feet. She shoved her finished drawing into her notebook and then put her notebook in her pocket. She held onto her hat as she ran inside wanting to find her sisters.
She found her way back to the main entrance and heard her sisters talking in another room. She followed the voices, once she got to the room's door she opened it and looked inside horrified. There were animal heads all over the walls, just like Vivian had thought there would be. Her shocked expression made Lane giggle and Clarisse was trying hard not to smile. Vivian felt so bad for all of those poor animals. She turned toward her sisters. "This is cruel and these disgusting things should not be trophies! They should be evidence of murder! Why are we allowed to kill them but if they kill one of us we put them down? It isn't fair!" Vivian clearly distraught felt like she was about to cry, her sisters started laughing at her even more not trying to hold it.
Vivian ran out of the room and wiped a tear from her cheek, she ran upstairs looking in door after door finally finding the room with her luggage in it. She walked in slammed the door shut loudly and collapsed on her bed. She didn't care if she would be sent to prison if she didn't work here, at least prison doesn't have animal heads everywhere! She knew she was being a drama queen but her reputation as such was already made, she couldn't back away from it now. Vivian changed into her nightgown and started brushing her hair.
Wilfred had personally asked the Broke sister, Lane and Clarisse, if they don't mind helping him preparing dinner. He knew they needed to rest but he find it is most effective to know a person over food. So as he peeled and sliced with the girls, he asked them some questions to get to know them well.
Lane was busy perfecting her potato, she did her best to remove the dirt filled eyes with a small pearing knife while she nonchalantly answered Wilfred's questions. She found out that he was very warm and jolly, much like their late father. And instead of being sad, she was glad she'd met him.
"Wilfred," She placed the finished potato on his cutting board and grabbed another as she continued to talk, "How come there are only a few people in the Stillworth's mansion? It is surprising to know that you don't even have any maids." She then looked at Clarisse who was busy cubing some tomatoes, as if asking her sister the same question.
"The house is really big and I doubt you were able to clean it all by yourself," She continued to talk without even thinking if she was crossing the line. Lane was quite talkative for a lady in her age. She loves to ask questions and discovering new things everyday.
"I might even break my arms if you will ask me to clean everything in one day. And besides, I don't want to deal with dirty linens from those boys," She tacklessly blurted. She then realized her mistake when she heard the old bloke chuckle at her public thoughts.
She smiled sheepishly towards her sister but never really apologized for her words. "What?!" She looked at Clarisse who brain is probably throbbing for having to deal with her little sister. "Don't tell me you want to wash their knockers!"
