Rina Verrais

"We might not know where we're going, but we know how to get there."

a character in “The Tale of Six Heroes”, originally authored by Gamer_Templar, as played by RolePlayGateway

Rina Verrais

Freelance Sorcerer

Rina stands at five feet and six inches, sporting a build that suggests a more physically active lifestyle than one might expect of your typical spellcaster. Her lilac hair is cut short to prevent it obscuring her vision, especially in the heat of battle when such a thing would be most inconvenient.

As brash and headstrong she may be at times, Rina sincerely aspires to be as good as the great heroes she had heard about in old legends and bedtime stories when she was little. While it can be argued that such a viewpoint is probably naive and childish, particularly for someone who has experienced little in the way of physical hardship, she is at least aware of such things in the wide world outside of her comfortable lifestyle at home. Rina is not to be underestimated in a fight either, as unlike most mages who simply stand at the back throwing fireballs, Rina would be just as likely to charge into battle to meet the enemy in melee.

Rina is seldom seen without her staff, as it serves well as both a weapon and a walking stick for those long treks. The rest of her possessions are bundled up in a small backpack suitable for travelling, including a hunting knife, some books and scribing equipment, and a wealthy sum of currency.

Asides from being a capable spellcaster, Rina is an effective close quarters combatant. She also has some talent with alchemy and is able to make a few basic healing potions. Although she may not be as proficient in the art of rhetoric as her companion, she displays enough confidence in both herself and others to be viewed as something of a leader figure.

Rina has quite the talent for the more destructive elemental spells, particularly those of fire and earth. She is also capable of casting basic shield spells on herself to ward off a few forms of magic-based attacks.

So begins...

One of the more comfortable tables in the corner of the pub was currently taken by two women, both in conversation, although one seemed to be more enthusiastic about it than the other.

"...Well, how about that contract for tracking down the cult those guys from earlier were talking about? They've doubled the reward again since yesterday, y'know!"

The woman opposite of the enthusiastic mage gestured her refusal to take on such a risky job. They had doubled the reward twice now, and that was a sign of danger much too often. Of course, young and eager mercenaries like her partner here never really did care for such details, a lack of care that usually resulted in fatal outcomes.

"My apologies, but I don't believe it would be wise to accept this contract, m'lady. Such a high bounty is often accompanied with high risks." Despite her best wishes, Helena doubted the mage would heed her words. She rarely did. "Think about it overnight, perhaps?"

Rina looked crestfallen upon hearing what her companion had to say, but she knew she was right. "Yeah, I'll... I'll do that. Besides, we'd need to get a few more people together for it anyway." Her eyes slowly scanned the room, a new idea starting to form. "Hey, we could probably find a few people in here who might be able to help us out. See anyone who looks like they could last long?"

Helena complied with the unspoken wishes of Rina, quickly scanning the room for any seasoned mercenaries that could assist them in this contract. There were a couple that had caught her eye, however Helena felt that, since it was Rina who wanted to take this contract, it was Rina who should choose. "Anyone in particular taking your fancy?"

The mage was about to reply that she hadn't found anyone, until an oddly young-looking man at one of the tables exclaimed something about a general of Ignis and starting coughing on his ale. Rina couldn't help but snigger at the sight and murmur "Looks like somebody's had one too many."

Helena tried her best to ignore the drunk shouts, however that proved to be challenging as every person, animal and object in the room had taken immediate notice of it - Even Rina. "Of course they have." The woman scoffed, quickly turning the conversation to a subject that was important. "We definitely won't ask them for help." She joked, resuming her drink as they waited for more... competent candidates to arrive.

Libraries. And books. And parchment. And ink. That's what Locaia enjoyed the most. Not pubs. She couldn't stand pubs. So, what was she doing in a pub? She wasn't sure. It might have had something to do with the fact that she could gather information easily. And by easily, I mean with a lot of work and maybe a bit of torture. She pulled her blue hood farther in front of her face. "What can I get you?" the bartender asked.

"Just water?"

"Just water."

The confused man walked to get her water. She settled down at one of the tables, reaching into her cloak and withdrawing a book. Her hands brushed the fans she used as a last resort, but she barely gave them a second thought. The book was about arcane healing magic. And by arcane, it meant arcane. Long before kingdoms even existed and mages were just discovering what they could do. She was so engrossed in her book that she didn't realize someone approaching her.

Helena idly glanced at the spectacle of four hulking giants approaching the far end table almost in unison, apparently they had it in for the two blokes that had briefly disrupted the chatter amongst patrons. Why, Helena couldn't tell, although the sudden gush of blood as one of the gruff mercenaries ragdolized against the floorboard had given her an inkling of what might've gone about.

As the fight escalated into a visceral, one-sided beatdown, quite obviously the dumb-as-bricks misfits on the losing end of said beating, Helena didn't speak, and merely looked to Rina, who she assumed must've seen the display. It was hard not to, considering it was in plain sight.

Rina had watched the fight, and although she couldn't help but flinch at some of the bloodier parts, her mind was in motion. If the cult they were after was going to be dangerous, they needed a few people relatively more expendable than themselves who could put up a good fight if she and Helena were to get that reward.

"Hmm... We could probably use a couple of good meatshields," Rina commented after a while. "What say you?"

"Every able hand is welcomed. Whatever the form." She retorted with a slight hint of disgust. She was very opinionated about these sort of things, however if Rina wished to ask for their assistance Helena would obediently agree to that. She had to at least give credit for dispatching of the four savages, regardless whether or not they were any real threat...

"Very well. Shall we make them the offer, m'lady?" Helena gracefully rose from her seat, allowing her right arm to rest on the hilt of her sword as she faced Rina and patiently waited for her to take the initiative.

"No time like the present, Helena," said Rina, striding purposefully towards the two young men. Their red hair gave away their heritage as sons of Ignis, a nation known for its fighters... and little else.

"Good evening, gentlemen. I have a proposition for you that you might be interested in, if you would be so kind as to hear me out."
