The American Mafia is in a state of turmoil across the United States of America. The Philadelphia crime family is engulfed in civil unrest, as the newly-created RICO statutes threaten to tear the five families of Liberty City apart... and east of the city, in Alderney, the smaller Torelli crime family is in decline as the health of its patriarch and founder, James Torelli, hangs in the balance.

The seat of succession for boss is believed to be his son, James Torelli, Jr., though the date of his ascension to the throne remains completely dependent on the day James becomes too ill to strike fear in the many soldiers and associates still earning him a weekly kickup.

In the early 1980s, the Torellis had maintained basic connections with the Five Families which ruled The Commission, among them being the Amato family of Broker, the Lombardo family of Bohan, the Giola family of Dukes, the Vinci family of Algonquin, and the Ferrone family of South Broker, as well as basic alliances with the two families of Los Santos, the Vinewood and Mission Row crime families, which were embattled in growing hostilities.

The Torellis' relationship to the Ferrones was historically strained, particularly due to competition in the drug trafficking and garbage hauling industry, as well as border disputes on Staunton Island. A war felt like it was in their midst, but equally felt far off, due to how much business was shared between the lower echelons of the two borgatas.

For the Torelli family, however, business was still decent. Although the number of turncoats and federal indictments were rising, particularly from the growing presence of drugs as a source of income, the family still maintained a solid multi-million yearly fiscal income; but if there's one thing proven time and time again in the community of the American Mafia, it's that good luck is always in short supply.
