History
Image
Kylar McQueen was born in the little town of Esterhaven, Virginia to a loving mother and father. Growing up, Kylar was the youngest of three children. His brother and sister were always running off without him and so it seemed that he was always trying to catch up with them. Shortly after graduating high school, Kylar began writing while he was attending the local college. A short story that he'd written was submitted to the local paper and things took off from there. He was soon contacted by the Trandrill Publishing Company. Since then, he's been writing and selling different books. Currently, Kylar is riding on the success of his new series, The Eyes of the Prophecy. He's currently working on the second book though the company is pushing for him to finish it quickly.

So begins...

Kylar McQueen was not having a good day. Hell, he wasn't having a good month. Though he was selling books left and right it seemed, the Trandrill Publishing Company seemed to want him to rush out a new book in his newest series. Kylar had been working on it for awhile and it was coming along quite well. However, he did not care to finish the book when they thought he needed to. He sighed heavily, getting dressed for the day. Once he was ready, Kylar made his way downstairs in his home.

Alexstraza followed behind him, as she normally did. They entered into the kitchen and Kylar quickly filled up her bowl with food before he grabbed his keys and headed out to his car. He got in and then headed into town.

The drive wasn't a long one, nor was it short. He made his way through the woods, down to the main part of town. He arrived at the local diner, parking. He got out and headed inside. He was quick to find a seat. He was supposed to be meeting with some person from the publishing company. He'd tried telling them that this wasn't the best time to be sending someone out to the country. There was an incoming snow storm and it was quite likely that they would end up getting stuck in town.

A waitress suddenly appeared, asking what she could get for him. "A coffee and..a egg sandwich, please." The woman nodded and then was quick to disappear. Kylar sighed. He wanted nothing more than to return to his home. He didn't like being out in public..hated it, actually. Here, in Esterhaven at least, everyone tended to leave him be.

The woman returned suddenly, sitting down his coffee and a plate that had his food on it. He thanked her before adding some sugar and cream to his drink. He then took a small sip and then began eating slowly. He was patient, waiting for the person that the company had sent. He fully intended upon telling them that he would finish the book when he pleased and that they could return to their bosses with that information. He suspected that they wouldn't be happy, however, honestly..he didn't care at the moment.

"You what?" Azalea stared at her head editor, smirking down at her. "Well, in case you didn't hear me the first time, Devereaux... I said you have to go over and talk terms with McQueen. Get him to write faster, submit the next book ASAP. Sales are going up, and we need this to move as quickly as we can so we keep making money. That money's used to pay your salary, kid, in case you forgot."

Azalea bit her lip. Of all people they had to send, why her? Surely Jenkins was much better at dealing with people, especially the writers that weren't cooperating with their editors. Plus, she wasn't even the one in charge...

"You hear me, Devereaux? Go now, I want results by Thursday."

Azalea was snapped out of her reverie by the head's voice. "Yes, sir," she mumbled miserably, turning away.

It took Azalea five hours to find exactly where McQueen's house was. It was so far out of the way, Azalea thought she hadn't seen anyone for the past half an hour she was driving down the tiny lane to the house.

She pulled up just outside the porch, stepping out. Her mouth dropped open. Wow. It was beautiful. She gaped for a moment, then loped up the stairs, reaching for the doorbell. A volley of barking sounded from inside the house, and Azalea took a step back, waiting. Nothing.

A gust of wind blew past, ruffling her hair, and Azalea pulled her coat tighter to guard against the breeze. "Huh. Guess no one's home," she commented to herself. "Guess I'll just wait... here."

Kylar finished his breakfast and then paid the waitress, thanking her. He then rose from his seat, making his way back to his car. He got in and buckled up. Turning the car on, Kylar slowly backed up out of the space and headed on into town. He had quite a few stops that he needed to make before he could return back to his home. Kylar tried to hurry and honestly it didn't really take that long. His last stop was the grocery store as he'd allowed himself to run out of a few things.

Only once he was done did Kylar head back towards his home. He at least wanted to get a few things that he needed. When he was finished, Kylar made his way back home. It didn't take him too long to reach the house. The first thing he noticed was that there was a strange vehicle in his driveway. He parked his car and then got out. Kylar then pulled out the few plastic bags that he'd gotten.

The writer then slowly made his way towards the front door, completely ignoring the vehicle. On the porch, the young man was quick to notice a woman waiting there. He hesitated only for a moment before continuing. "Can I help you?" He asked suddenly, moving to unlock the door.

He could hear his dog barking on the other side of the door. With the door unlocked, he opened it. Alexstraza ran out the door, towards the woman. She was no longer barking, simply checking her out. "Well, come in. You look frozen." He said, moving to allow the woman to enter first. Only once she was in did Kylar enter, along with his dog. He closed the door and then headed into the kitchen.

Kylar stopped at the counter, setting his things down. Alexstraza was at his feet, watching him quietly..almost as if asking who the stranger was in their home.

"Oh, hi. Uh, I'm from Trandrill..." Azalea trailed off, wondering how to continue.

The door opened, and the dog came out. Azalea tried not to step on its tail, but it was really hard not to when it kept nosing round her legs. She laughed, and bent down to pet the dog. When McQueen's voice sounded above her, she looked up. "Right. Thank you." She stood and smoothed her skirt down, trying to appear more professional.

The warmth in the house made it easier for Azalea to speak. "Mr McQueen, my name is Azalea Devereaux," she began again. "I'm an editor sent by Trandrill Publishing to speak to you about your series. We're hoping that you can send us the next book as soon as possible, so we can look it through and publish it."

She cleared her throat nervously. "I'm guessing you haven't been assigned an editor yet. Well, I'm your editor, for now... if there's anything you need help with." She clasped her hands together, hoping it was alright.

"Mr McQueen, my name is Azalea Devereaux. I'm an editor sent by Trandrill Publishing to speak to you about your series. We're hoping that you can send us the next book as soon as possible, so we can look it through and publish it." The woman said. Kylar, turning his gaze to the woman, remained silent as she continued. "I'm guessing you haven't been assigned an editor yet. Well, I'm your editor, for now... if there's anything you need help with."

He hesitated only a moment before speaking. "You can tell your boss that they'll have my next book as soon as I finish it. No sooner. There is no reason that I should force myself and rush. That will only cause for mistakes to be made." He paused for a moment, watching the woman closely for her reaction. He couldn't imagine that she would be happy with what he was saying. "As for help..I don't need it. I'm fine. Was there anything else?"

Kylar was fully aware that he wasn't being overly welcoming to the woman. However, he was annoyed that the company she worked for seemed to think that writing his series was easy. It wasn't. He was creating new races, their histories, their languages. It actually took up a lot of his time. Not that any of the Publishing Company cared to ask about that.

"Uh." Azalea thought it over, biting her lip. "I understand, Mr McQueen. I'd like to apologize on behalf of the company, we can be rather... tight on schedules sometimes." Her expression softened.

"As for help," Azalea reached into her handbag, withdrawing a business card. "This is my card. If anything comes up, you can call me." She turned away, and somehow managed to catch her heel on a small divot in the wooden floor, stumbling a little. A few pins slipped from their positions in her hair, allowing strands of copper to fall lightly to frame her face. Azalea's cheeks flamed red. "Sorry. I'm a little... clumsy. I'll take my leave, then. I wouldn't want to impose on you."

She walked to the door, pausing to bend down and pet the dog, its large eyes staring up at her. "Goodbye, Mr McQueen." Upon opening the door, she was dismayed to find that snow had started falling, large flakes floating down from the sky. She turned back momentarily, meeting McQueen's gaze.

"It's snowing. I hope you stocked up, Mr McQueen. Have a nice day." She walked out to her car, heels sinking into snow. "Damn. I didn't expect this much, this fast," she muttered angrily to herself, trying not to slip on the ice. Assuming McQueen had closed the door, she set her bag down on the hood of the car, and reached down to remove her heels, squealing as her stockinged feet made contact with the snow. It was cold, but she'd find walking much easier without her shoes.

Kylar regarded the woman silently as she spoke. He took the business card that she offered him, suddenly looking at the item. The woman turned from him then, attempting to leave. However, she stumbled. Kylar immediately returned his gaze to her. "Are you alright?" He asked her, worry suddenly showing upon his face. The woman apologized and then headed to leave once again.

He followed her as she made her way towards the door. She leaned down, petting Alexstraza before bidding him goodbye. Only once she'd fallen silent, after commenting upon the snow, did Kylar speak. "Always. Can't survive here otherwise during the winter months. Goodbye, Ms. Devereaux."

He watched as she left his home. Instead of simply allowing the door to close, Kylar moved, standing and watching her as she tried to make her way to her car. Honestly, he'd not expected the snow to accumulate so quickly. The woman wouldn't make it back to town, he realized. He sighed softly to himself.

He couldn't let her go. She most likely would get hurt. He left Alexstraza in the house, making sure that she knew to stay. He then made his way out into the snow. He was able to reach her rather quickly. Most likely due to the fact that he'd become fairly used to dealing with the ice and snow. As he reached her, he gently placed a hand upon her upper arm, trying to get her attention. It was terribly cold and he was regretting coming out without his coat.

"Ms. Devereaux, I can't let you go. I hadn't realized how bad it had gotten. You'll never make it back to town at this rate. I must insist that you stay..at least until this storm is over and the roads are safe."

Azalea struggled through the snow, ice crunching beneath her soles. She bit down hard on her lip, trying not to make much more noise than necessary, but by god it was cold.

Already bright patches of colour were appearing high on Azalea's pale cheeks, her hands starting to freeze into half-formed claws. I hate snow. She managed to struggle to the driver's side door of her car, reaching into her pocket for her car keys. She managed to hook a finger on the keyring, but being unable to adjust its position much, dropped the ring of keys into the snow. She cursed quietly to herself, reaching down to pick the keys up.

Fingers wrapped around her upper arm, and she could almost feel the cold emanating from the touch, through her simple coat. Azalea turned, finding herself in incredibly close proximity to Kylar McQueen. "I think I should be alright, it's not that bad," she protested lightly. "I can make it back if I go quickly."

Somehow, she doubted this claim. There was no saying that she wouldn't get lost again, with the many roads and crossed she'd taken to get here, and driving in snow that was building up like this was incredibly difficult. On the other hand, this was Kylar McQueen.

"Really, Mr McQueen. I wouldn't like to impose on your hospitality any longer." She smiled, as bright as she could manage to mask the faint worry underneath. "Thank you very much for the offer, though."

Kylar allowed himself to watch the woman closely. He was well aware that they were rather close. Closer than he normally would allow himself to get with someone that he really didn't know. However, he did not move. He had noted that she'd removed her shoes, something that he did not understand. Was she crazy? "I think I should be alright, it's not that bad. I can make it back if I go quickly." The woman protested. He didn't blame her. In truth, he didn't want her to stay. However, he knew that she wouldn't make it.

"Really, Mr McQueen. I wouldn't like to impose on your hospitality any longer. Thank you very much for the offer, though." She seemed insistent upon not staying with him. Kylar could see, though, that she was at least a bit worried. Even if she did hide it well.

He sighed quietly, finally releasing her. Kylar certainly wouldn't give up so easily. Azalea was putting herself at risk. If she tried going from his home, she would most likely get lost and then stuck within her car until the snow cleared. Which...could be a long while seeing as how heavily it was now starting to come down.

"Ms. Devereaux, I don't think you understand. The storms we get here last for some time and they're bad. I doubt that you'll be able to see the road. I wouldn't insist otherwise. You won't make it." As he looked at her, concern suddenly appeared upon his face. He hoped that she would listen, that he wouldn't need to take a most drastic measure to get her to stay.

Azalea mentally breathed a sigh of relief when her arm was released. She did not know how to deal with people well, much less Kylar McQueen. The best solution at that point of time would be to leave as fast as was humanly possible.

"Ms Devereaux, I don't think you understand. The storms we get here last for some time and they're bad. I doubt that you'll be able to see the road. I wouldn't insist otherwise. You won't make it," he insisted. Azalea's resolve wavered. If they were really that bad, there was a possibility she wouldn't make it back. Not with her car's failing heating system.

She dropped her shoes on the ground, the heels hitting the snow with a soft thump. Slipping her feet back into the rapidly cooling shoes, Azalea mustered a smile. "If that's the case, Mr McQueen, I suppose I can stay a while. Hopefully this will let up soon and I can head back. I wouldn't want to give you too much trouble."

They'd be expecting her back at Trandrill come Thursday, with satisfactory results. That was two days away, and McQueen wouldn't be so serious if he didn't mean it. Azalea checked her phone. Barely any signal, but she would be able to call back and inform them of her unexpected holdup.

The head editor would not be pleased.

He continued watching her, hoping that she would see reason. She dropped her shoes and then put them back on. "If that's the case, Mr McQueen, I suppose I can stay a while. Hopefully this will let up soon and I can head back. I wouldn't want to give you too much trouble." She said. Kylar had to admit that he was glad that she'd decided to stay. Though he didn't want to be around her any longer than he had to he also didn't want her getting into trouble in the middle of such a storm.

He turned around and led the way back to the house. He opened the door and entered, moving Alexstraza out of the way so that Azaela could enter without trouble. He closed the door only once she was inside. "Make yourself at home. There's no telling how long this storm will last. I have a extra bedroom that you are welcome to. Do you have any extra clothes?"

If she didn't, he could find something for her. He led her up to the extra bedroom, showing her where she could sleep. He opened the door, allowing her to enter. His dog followed in quickly. Kylar remained at the door, watching her for a moment. Suddenly, he called his dog and then turned to leave the woman be. "I'll be downstairs if you need me, Ms. Devereaux."

He left her, making his way back down to the main floor and Alexstraza following behind him. He then made his way to the living room and sat down on the couch, picking up the book he'd been reading. He settled in with his dog by his side.

Azalea trailed after Kylar back into the house, sighing at her bad luck. These things always seemed to happen to her.

"Make yourself at home. There's no telling how long this storm will last. I have a extra bedroom that you are welcome to. Do you have any extra clothes?" Azalea glanced down at her handbag. "I'm afraid not. I have an extra coat in my car, but that's all." She wondered just how much she needed but didn't have. It was probably a lot.

He led her up to a bedroom, opening the door. It was beautifully furnished, a little bright on the eyes but otherwise rather lovely. She ventured inside, placing her bag down on the bedside table. "Thank you," she managed, turning around to face him. "It's lovely."

"I'll be downstairs if you need me, Ms Devereaux." Azalea was left standing in the middle of the room, wondering what she'd done wrong. She decided to let him have some space, and shut the bedroom door, sinking down onto the soft bed. Sunlight streamed in from the window still, giving no indication whatsoever that a blizzard was almost upon them.

The bedroom offered a better signal. Azalea texted the head editor quickly, offering almost no explanation as to her efforts. been held up at McQueen's. blizzard on the way, could be snowed in for a few days. sorry.

She sighed, hugging one of the pillows to her chest.

Kylar spent at least thirty minutes downstairs reading. However, it came to be that he couldn't concentrate. He was slowly realizing that he'd not been the kindest to her earlier. It wasn't her fault that she was stuck there. Kylar suddenly leaned back on the couch, sighing heavily. He put his book down and then rose from his seat. His dog was quick to rise and follow him as well.

He made his way back up the stairs, making his way to his bedroom. Once there, he began searching about for some of his old clothing. Anything that Azalea could use while she was there. When he was certain that he had plenty for her, he made his way to the room where he'd left her.

Kylar knocked upon the door, waiting for her to acknowledge him. Only once she'd spoken did he open the door. His dog ran in, jumping upon the bed. She was clearly happy to see the woman. "Sorry about Alex. You can just put her in the floor if she's bothering you. Anyway, I wanted to bring you these. You know..in case you need them."

Moving closer to the bed, Kylar sat the small pile of clothing down and then took a step back. He hesitated for a moment before continuing. "Look, I wanted to apologize to you. It's not often that I am in the company of other people. It's just..easier for me. So, I realize that I wasn't exactly nice earlier and I'm sorry." He fell silent, regarding her gently. It was clear that he wasn't completely comfortable in this situation.

Azalea heard Kylar pottering around the house, the sound of a few opening doors and sliding drawers slipping easily under the door and drifting into the room. She remained in her position, sitting on the bed. A moment's thought later, she slipped her shoes off, the heels thumping heavily on the floor, and drew her knees up to her chest.

A knock came on the door, startling Azalea. She wobbled a little, then put one foot down on the floor and steadied herself. "Come in," she called, raising her voice a little, trying to smile a little so she wouldn't look too offended. The door eased open, and the dog preceded Kylar, leaping up into Azalea's lap. She giggled, caught off guard, and let go of the pillow so she could pull the dog closer, stroking its fur affectionately.

"Sorry about Alex. You can just put her in the floor if she's bothering you. Anyway, I wanted to bring you these. You know..in case you need them." "Oh, no, that's alright, she's endearing." Azalea shrugged. "I don't mind her."

"Look, I wanted to apologize to you. It's not often that I am in the company of other people. It's just..easier for me. So, I realize that I wasn't exactly nice earlier and I'm sorry." Azalea's gaze snapped up, surprised. She thought for a moment, searching for the right words. "I understand. Don't worry too much about it," she finally settled, beaming tentatively. "You've done so much for me already, I appreciate it very much."
