Personal History
With a mother that wrote fantasy novels and a father teaching science classes, Ezra grew up in the juxtaposition of both the magical and the mundane. Always too curious for his own good, his first contact with the unseen was almost his last, being saved from enthrallment by a warden. Since then he has made it his goal to understand magic and its origins.
Abiding the rules of the council, he worked hard to acquire a position in which he could come in contact with those using forbidden abilities.

So begins...

Councilmember Klein examined the paperwork in front of him, and the finished signing it off. He looked to the man across the desk from him and smiled, clearly pleased. “I’m glad you see you were able to make this meeting, Warden Bennet.” Of course, it wasn’t like there was much choice given in the matter. Still he offered the other a wane smile.

“There’s a situation I’d like you to look into, in Dallas. They’ve been having troubles with necromancers lately, and the local warden has been put on administrative leave as of…. 3 am last night.” After they had called for this meeting, but still. Kasimir had been trying to get a second warden in Dallas for some time. “Along with several key people working on the case. They were all attacked in their homes, and forced to defend themselves. Unfortunately, regulations insist that means they go on administrative leave, even if she is the only warden for the Dallas area.”

It was something he had been trying to change for some time. Dallas was huge, and needed at least three wardens to run smoothly. The fact that they only had the one there was a mark of shame, as far as he was concerned.

“Councilmember Klein.” With a nod and a tight smile, Ezra Bennet sat down across from him, glancing at the papers on the desk and feeling the muscles in his jaws tense in anticipation of what was to come. He did not like the idea of having to move on such short notice and entrusting a specialised company to relocate his research.

Dallas, of all places too. Warden Dumitrescu had quite the reputation and he couldn’t decide whether to be excited about the opportunity to meet her or dread having to work with her in the future.
He adjusted the cuff of his jacket to give him another second to think.
However, a necromancy case should prove interesting. His face relaxed into a more natural smile.
“Have there been any casualties?” The higher the body count, the higher were the chances the media caught hold of the situation, and he’d prefer knowing what state of frenzy the city was in.

"The local...necromancer..." and the way he said the word revealed exactly his distaste for the fact that they had one on call "has said that the thralls that attacked them last night were all still alive. A total of four confirmed dead, one reported thrall who could be dead by now, a local girl kidnapped, and I believe the last count was eight bodies missing from funeral parlors." Causalities, to be sure. "Feel free to question Warden Dumitrescu, and the contractors that were attack last night for any details, administrative leave or not. Ideally, the local coven will be disbanded and their powers bound by the end of this, and which ever one of them is causing all this chaos will stand trial. My understanding is only one of the local coven was registered."

"After the case is over, you are welcome to return here and pack your things at your leisure, but given the size of that damned city, I've finally convinced the rest of the council to have a second warden there full time. I believe you to be the best fit." That was despite the short notice he had given, and he was sorry about that. "If you believe you are unable to work with the locals, so to speak, inform me after the case." And they'd find someone different.

A necromancer working for the MCU, a missing girl and unusual thralls? The case was becoming more promising by the minute. Ezra started to make a mental checklist of what he had to do to get to Dallas by the evening.
It was a shame he hadn’t been transferred earlier, having to work through the casefiles would take away precious time. But he suspected Councilmember Klein’s request for more wardens would have fallen on deaf ears for longer without the emergency at hand.
“I’m sure the locals know of my joining of the investigation, but did they happen to send some of the files?” He tried to not sound too hopeful about it, they would have other things to worry about.

Every second in that chair was starting to feel like time he should be elsewhere, the checklist getting longer and longer. “Thank you for considering me for the position. Is there anything else, or may I take my leave? I’d like to arrive within the day.”

"I had one of the junior officer's on the case send copies to your e-mail. If it isn't there by now, contact Officer Johnson to hurry it up." It wasn't usually done, but the circumstances were unusual. The other needed to know everything there was about the case, and he needed to know it yesterday, as far as Klein was concerned. "Go, and go quickly. I want this done with. There's the life of a young mundane girl depending on this."

Young, mundane, with only peripheral contact with the Unseen. Her parents had yet to leave the station since the attack, according to the updates he had received prior to this meeting. With luck, this would be over soon. "They should be done processing the latest scenes by the time you arrive, or damn close to it."

The council member eyed the ever eager warden and nodded. "Good luck, Warden Bennet." He would need every ounce of good luck he could get.

Brandon had been up since he had been attacked at 3 am, and the adrenaline of being attacked had long since faded. At this point in the evening, he was operating on a nap he had fitfully managed in the break room as Laura's parents waited for info beside him and a hell of a lot of police coffee. If nothing else, that stuff was black as the art he practiced and would forcefully keep him awake. The taste certainly had nothing at all going for it.

The necromancer had been told they were waiting on the new warden to come in to take over, and that he would get to them all as soon as he could. Until then, they were all to sit tight, especially him, and to wait, especially him. And no, they weren't about to remove the cuffs unless he was accompanied the entire time, even though he had been a victim this time. Standard procedure his ass.

Some days he wondered why he put up with these ass holes. Other days, he was distinctly reminded it was put up with these assholes or be bound, and have to deal with feeling weak as a kitten. The necromancer rubbed at this head and groaned. Well, there went his doctor's visit today. He'd have to try again another time, which wasn't good. If that damned cancer had come back, he wanted it seen to as soon as possible. If not, he wanted to know for sure.

Luck so far had indeed been on his side: he got a ticket for an early flight, traffic had been surprisingly tolerable, Officer Johnson had been very diligent with the files. In fact Ezra made such good time that he had only been able to sift through the reports. The interview transcripts of the necromancers would have to wait until the night.
He left his suitcase at the front desk, signing in for duty with only the briefest of introductions. The witnesses had waited long enough.

Silence stretched as he stood in the doorway, taking in the sight infront of him. The parents and the necromancer, huddled in their chairs, coffee heavy in the air, strong enough that it left a sour taste. Another awkward beat as he adjusted his glasses and cleared his throat.
“I’m sorry you had to wait, Mr. and Mrs. Seychelle, Mr. Hammerstine. I am Ezra Bennet, the warden taking over the case. I assure you I will do everything in my power to bring Laura back unharmed.” His voice was honest and warm as he shook their hands, contrasting the sharp inspection he was giving them behind the dark horn rims. “Mr. Hammerstine, I’m afraid I will have to ask you to wait a while longer.”

The Seychelles looked up, clearly terrified. The mother stepped forward, worried. This entire world was terrifying, and the fact that some inhuman creature had stolen their daughter from them scared them. "Is there any news? Brandon told us that...that the warden had to be reassigned, but surely...surely something is known now. It's been hours!" Their Laura was stolen away, likely in pain, and there was nothing they could do to help her. It was horrifying.

The husband looked up too, clearly worried as well, lines of stress deep on his face. The very idea that Laura had been kidnapped, that they had watched it happen and had been helpless was horrible one, but it was true.

Brandon looked up and looked the new warden over, clearly tired. "I'm used to waiting Warden. Let the Seychelles go first. They need whatever comfort you can give them." As did he. He wasn't one hundred percent certain he wanted to wait on this new warden to get up to speed, or to wait around and see if this new warden was good enough to handle the problem at all.

Brandon didn't know the spells to seek and find using spirits, or to speak to them while they lay dead. But he knew where the two grimoires of a man who knew those things were kept, and he knew how to get past the defenses on those spell books. He'd give the new warden a day before he tried to find Laura on his own, and damn the consequences. If it got a kid who didn't have a scrap of magic in her back safe, then he'd accept them.

He'd have to make sure to thank him later. Ezra gently lead the Seychelles inside the interrogation room, closing the door behind them with a last look at the necromancer. “Please, have a seat. The evidence is being analyzed as we speak.” To have to tell two frightened parents that there weren’t enough leads was not the start he had hoped to have in this case. “I know you have been questioned already, but would you please tell me what you can remember of the assault? Any detail could help.”

"Not a lot." Mrs. Seychelle admitted. "We were sleeping. I woke up when I heard Laura screaming. My husband, Victor and I, we came down the stairs, and there was...was a teenager there." She said. "He had one arm around Laura, and a knife to her throat. The boy said...he said if we moved another step, he was going to cut her throat. That he could find another, and she'd be dead either way. " Her voice hitched. "A-And he was backing out of the house." She had slept through him breaking in, and she didn't know how. "L-Laura looked so scared. She was trying to fight him, but couldn't. She...she called out. Told us to call her boss. W-we know that he's related to the police, and works for them, so we did."

They had spoken to Brandon before, when he hired Laura out of the blue. It seemed appropriate after all. The wife broke down into tears once more and her husband spoke up.

"It's like she said. A black boy with a knife. But when he spoke, he didn't sound like his voice matched his body. He...he didn't sound like english was his first language even." There was an accent, he didn't recognize it, but it was there. He hesitated and then spoke a bit more. "I know it doesn't make sense, but his voice didn't match at all."

Brave girl, and good presence of mind. “You’ve done well to call him.” It has sped up the process somewhat. Silently he put some tissues between them, focusing on Mr. Seychelle instead, curiosity piqued. “Could you elaborate on what you mean with that the voice didn’t match? Was it the wording, or more the actual sound of it?”
Maybe the interview recordings could be compared to the profile given.

As Mrs. Seychelle wiped at her tears, Mr. Seychelle put and arm around her and hesitated. "The boy...he was a black boy, and well, he was pretty clearly one of those ghetto boys, in a gang and all that. There were so many tattoos, it looked like. But he didn't sound like that. He sounded like he had been to college, or was raised up like he was rich." It wasn't at all right, but he wasn't sure how to put it.

Hesitating, he continued on. "It almost sounded like it came from a much smaller man." He didn't know how to put it, not really. He looked shaken up. "I'm sorry, this must sound insane." But if it would help find his precious little girl, he would sound insane as often as needed.

What was insane for Mr. Seychelle, was just another day at the job for Ezra. “It sounds very rational. Thank you for your help, if you can think of anything else, you can reach me with this number.” He handed him his card. “I know this is a difficult time for you, but I’d advise you to return home, maybe get some rest, you will want to have a clear mind. I’ll keep you updated on the investigation.”
He doubted they would rest, most likely couldn’t, too busy reliving that terrible moment until their girl was home safe with them. Even then it would haunt them for the rest of their lives.
They had provided a surprisingly substantial lead, if the voice could be matched. But when it came to necromancy, someone practicing the craft might have more information than two mundanes.

Mr. Seychelle accepted the card and the nodded. "Thank you. We...we should go get some rest. Please call us as soon as you hear anything." He gave the man a card with his own number on it, and then stood, arm around wife. They'd go now, and try desperately to get some form of rest, perhaps a meal. They had to let the whole family know anyway. Oh poor Laura. They'd get her back though, they had to.

No doubt they'd be back in a few hours regardless. They needed sleep more than they needed anything else. They couldn't help Laura like this. "Please find my daughter." He whispered, and led his wife away, not waiting for the reassurance. It meant nothing, if they couldn't do it after all. But he couldn't think about that. Laura would be found, she had to be.

Their pain, he’d seen it before, but he could not relate to it. As long as Laura was found alive and well - and she would, he reminded himself, because it was the only acceptable option - it did not matter if he understood their emotions.
When a life was already lost, it’s mainly sadness, revenge and anger you had to deal with. Those were distant things, Ezra did not have to feel them to get the job done. It was hope that complicated everything.

He took a moment to gather his thoughts, not long, just enough to take a steady breath and rub his eyelids. With new vigour he stepped outside - and dead in his tracks.
“Warden Dumitrescu?” He had hoped to be better prepared for their first meeting, the pictures did not do her sheer presence justice. “I had not expected you. Ezra Bennet, I look forward to working together.”
Offering to shake hands, he glanced towards Mr. Hammerstine, surprised to find him still in cuffs. “With the two of us here, I doubt the officers will object to unbinding our contractor”, he added with a wry smile.

Brandon shook his head at this. "I am always in cuffs." He explained, rather amused. It was a part of life, and he well knew it. "I enter the door, and I get cuffed, even if I'm here for a job." It had been awhile since anybody asked why though, and he rather appreciated the fact that the new warden seemed to take offense to him being bound up like this the entire time. He shrugged, unimpressed.

"Don't worry about it, Warden Bennet. I've been cuffed while coming in since I was a teenager, despite the fact that I've come here every day after school since I was ten." It was almost a daily routine at this point. He offered the other a wan smile. "After all, I'm the big scary necromancer. I might, I don't know, suddenly be overtaken by the urge to do something horrible and evil."

He doubted that. He wasn't exactly what anyone remotely sane would call 'evil,' at least not anymore. Plus, he had significantly better control of himself than anybody seemed to think. He wasn't going to go on a killing spree if he wasn't bound.

“Oh yes, I forgot, necromancy, inherently evil. Foolish of me, as we all know other types of magic cannot be used to do harm. I’ll take my chances.” Judging the man to be someone who’d prefer to unbind himself, he gave him the key.
“If you should by some twist of fate be overtaken by said urge, I recommend you put your energy towards whoever took your assistant. Not that I condone vigilantism, but just saying, they’d make a much better target.”
It was too late to worry if he should be saying these things infront of the other warden.

Briefly surprised, Brandon unlocked the cuffs and put them on the table. Oh he liked this one, and as far as he was concerned, that had been full permission for said vigilantism. He rubbed his wrists almost reflexively and then looked Ezra over head to toe, blatantly checking him out. Oh yeah, he was going to have zero issue with the other in anyway if the other kept this up. It was too bad he was a warden and probably straight if the look he had given his aunt had been any indication. The rebound relationship with this one would have been amazing.

Though he had been raised to not be quite so petty in what he was looking for in a relationship, Ezra seemed to be more than just a pretty face. Good. Dallas needed another competent Warden. "Welcome to Dallas, Warden. We're understaffed and undermanned, and you just lost two contractors and the only other warden here to desk duty. We're also pretty certain that there's between two and eighteen days until Laura Seychelle is cleared. Most likely though, you have five days to track down my shop girl, before Something Bad happens, and if we're especially unlucky, she lives through it."
