Magic

Personal History
Kasimir is a serious man in the eyes of the other council members. He has a great dislike for MCU, and believes that it is not necessary, that they can police their own without it. He has been around a long time, and that shows in his patience with children, though he has less patience with adults. He does not like to speak to others about his past, but it is rumored that his distaste with MCU, and the people who are bound thanks to MCU comes from this past.

It is rumored that he lost a child to the first person whose powers were bound by MCU after their binding, though he will not comment on it or anything in his past.

So begins...

Councilmember Klein examined the paperwork in front of him, and the finished signing it off. He looked to the man across the desk from him and smiled, clearly pleased. “I’m glad you see you were able to make this meeting, Warden Bennet.” Of course, it wasn’t like there was much choice given in the matter. Still he offered the other a wane smile.

“There’s a situation I’d like you to look into, in Dallas. They’ve been having troubles with necromancers lately, and the local warden has been put on administrative leave as of…. 3 am last night.” After they had called for this meeting, but still. Kasimir had been trying to get a second warden in Dallas for some time. “Along with several key people working on the case. They were all attacked in their homes, and forced to defend themselves. Unfortunately, regulations insist that means they go on administrative leave, even if she is the only warden for the Dallas area.”

It was something he had been trying to change for some time. Dallas was huge, and needed at least three wardens to run smoothly. The fact that they only had the one there was a mark of shame, as far as he was concerned.

“Councilmember Klein.” With a nod and a tight smile, Ezra Bennet sat down across from him, glancing at the papers on the desk and feeling the muscles in his jaws tense in anticipation of what was to come. He did not like the idea of having to move on such short notice and entrusting a specialised company to relocate his research.

Dallas, of all places too. Warden Dumitrescu had quite the reputation and he couldn’t decide whether to be excited about the opportunity to meet her or dread having to work with her in the future.
He adjusted the cuff of his jacket to give him another second to think.
However, a necromancy case should prove interesting. His face relaxed into a more natural smile.
“Have there been any casualties?” The higher the body count, the higher were the chances the media caught hold of the situation, and he’d prefer knowing what state of frenzy the city was in.

"The local...necromancer..." and the way he said the word revealed exactly his distaste for the fact that they had one on call "has said that the thralls that attacked them last night were all still alive. A total of four confirmed dead, one reported thrall who could be dead by now, a local girl kidnapped, and I believe the last count was eight bodies missing from funeral parlors." Causalities, to be sure. "Feel free to question Warden Dumitrescu, and the contractors that were attack last night for any details, administrative leave or not. Ideally, the local coven will be disbanded and their powers bound by the end of this, and which ever one of them is causing all this chaos will stand trial. My understanding is only one of the local coven was registered."

"After the case is over, you are welcome to return here and pack your things at your leisure, but given the size of that damned city, I've finally convinced the rest of the council to have a second warden there full time. I believe you to be the best fit." That was despite the short notice he had given, and he was sorry about that. "If you believe you are unable to work with the locals, so to speak, inform me after the case." And they'd find someone different.

A necromancer working for the MCU, a missing girl and unusual thralls? The case was becoming more promising by the minute. Ezra started to make a mental checklist of what he had to do to get to Dallas by the evening.
It was a shame he hadn’t been transferred earlier, having to work through the casefiles would take away precious time. But he suspected Councilmember Klein’s request for more wardens would have fallen on deaf ears for longer without the emergency at hand.
“I’m sure the locals know of my joining of the investigation, but did they happen to send some of the files?” He tried to not sound too hopeful about it, they would have other things to worry about.

Every second in that chair was starting to feel like time he should be elsewhere, the checklist getting longer and longer. “Thank you for considering me for the position. Is there anything else, or may I take my leave? I’d like to arrive within the day.”

"I had one of the junior officer's on the case send copies to your e-mail. If it isn't there by now, contact Officer Johnson to hurry it up." It wasn't usually done, but the circumstances were unusual. The other needed to know everything there was about the case, and he needed to know it yesterday, as far as Klein was concerned. "Go, and go quickly. I want this done with. There's the life of a young mundane girl depending on this."

Young, mundane, with only peripheral contact with the Unseen. Her parents had yet to leave the station since the attack, according to the updates he had received prior to this meeting. With luck, this would be over soon. "They should be done processing the latest scenes by the time you arrive, or damn close to it."

The council member eyed the ever eager warden and nodded. "Good luck, Warden Bennet." He would need every ounce of good luck he could get.

Alexander was present for yet another annoying round of political banter and posturing that was a council meeting. Todays topic of discussion; what to do about the Dallas office. "I have a novel idea, how about instead of playing political posturing and games of chance with the lives of our agents, how about we just give them an actual working budget, so they can have proper equipment?" His tone was dry, there was no particular expression of emotion in his tone. He hadn't been the same since Sir William had died and claimed him as his heir to council responsibilities The battle with the Titan Volcanus had taken a lot out of him.

"Why are you even here Summers? You are here as a courtesy to a fallen member. What you have to say is of little merit or concern. Less so given you were placed on the council to a traitor to the Sealie Fae court. Sir William McBride murdered Lord Oberon in unjustified cold blood." Alexander would normally have just responded with a snarky comment or shrugged it off. But today was not a day to piss him off by speaking poorly of a friend who passed beyond the veil. With alarming speed the Fae who spoke against Sir William found him self up suspended by the neck and the tip of Alexander's gladiolus pressed against his throat.

"I will say this one time and one time only you pointy eared peon. Say what you want about me, my mother, even my favorite dog. But if you ever speak poorly of Sir William McBride, out of Victoria by Callenth of Arganon again... I may not be allowed to kill you, but the council rules are some what fuzzy about the removing of your tongue and then making you eat it."

An uneasy silence swept over the council chambers, as no one moved. Alexander let the taller man slump back to the floor and he turned walking out of the council chambers. He wouldn't do any good here and he needed to stretch his legs any ways.

June sat there cringing as she watched the spectacle Alexander had just made of himself. Clearing her throat she looked around at the various other stunned members of the Council. "Well, next time... perhaps you shouldn't goad him so badly, Tarrenfall." She remarked dryly. What else did the poor man think he was going to get? One of Alexander's trademark rude responses?

So many of them were still having trouble processing the demise of Councilor McBride, and the events that had surrounded it; some of them more than others. "But, lets finish things up." She continued looking around at the faces of the others. "He's right, we need to pass a motion to fund Dallas more. If we can't agree, we're going to be here awhile."

"Agreed. And as a reminder Tarrenfall, Summers was fond of McBride. Try to keep your mouth shut about the former Councilor, regardless of feelings." Klein drawled, clearly unimpressed with the scene. Really, insulting someone who was deceased, regardless of what they had done, was a sign that Tarrenfall should, perhaps, not be on the council.

"I have read the reports coming out of Dallas. More funding is certainly necessary, under the circumstances." Despite his distaste for Dumitrescu, and that Dallas was viewed as a punishment office, of sorts, he could see the need for funding. "I believe Summers has made his vote clear on the issue. We've already had to send more personnel to contain a coven of necromancers. Given the history of the Unseen in the area, it is astonishing that funding hasn't been approved before this."

Kasimir read the latest reports from Dallas and frowned darkly. Of course this would happen, and the Warden he sent there to prevent this mess, well. He was off on a special mission of his own, an MCU officer that was reported as being trigger happy accompanying him. Damn. He read the reports once more and scoffed.

"I can't leave Dumitrescu alone a moment before shit hits the fan near her. Upsetting the vampires, one contractor missing, one contractor abruptly removed, and now she's had an archivist hired on?" He looked the paperwork over again and shook his head. The new archivist was marked as a trouble maker in his personnal files already, having moved to Dallas after a near exposure in the midwest. He looked that report over, reading it quietly for several moment before he dropped it to his desk in absolute disgust.

"What the hell is hapepning in Dallas?" And for that manner, they'd have to see one of the contractors to find out what the hell was going on. He was required to be on call, and with him off it, Kasimir wanted a good reason as to why. The man gathered up the paperwork and stalked out of his office. "Blackwelder! Blackwelder, what the hell is happening in Dallas? Have you seen the reports?" He said, entering the others office without a by your leave.

June winced as Kasimir continued to shout in her office. "Manners, Kasimir, manners... do you have them?" The petite woman asked grumpily glaring at the other Councilor. Most days she was fairly cheerful, easy going, and one of the easiest of the Councilor's to deal with; however Kasimir's insistence on barging into her office, her private sanctum, was nearly unforgivable. "I'll tell you once you stop shouting. Didn't your mother ever teach you not to shout in someone's ear?" She continued as she set aside what she had been working on.

"Hardly shouting." He said simply and handed them over. "You remember that disaster in the midwest? They've hired the guy responsible for it as an archivist in Dallas. One contractor has gone missing, and another had been permanently removed from the rolls. Worse yet, the vampire courts have been entirely too riled up over whatever is happening there."

What exactly had Dumitrescu and her band of merry idiots done this time. He pinched the bridge of his nose and then sighed. "We're going to have to go there in person to sort it out." It wasn't like it was hard to do so, but it was, frankly, very annoying that they needed to in the first place. That they had riled up the damned vampire king would mean they needed to speak to him anyway. No doubt the man would have strong, and annoyed, words for them.

June skimmed the documents that Kasimir handed her. "I might point out that so far they've kept a lid on the territory wars, solved a twenty year old cold case, and managed to deal with a small succubus problem. It also looks like the contractor removed is Hammerstein, illness has been cited as the reason." She said handing back the documents. The man was looking for any and every reason to go poke his nose in whatever was going on in Dallas.

"I remember the incident in the midwest, but I thought it was a cut and dry thing." Going in person to talk to the Dallas office wouldn't be hard, it would just require liberal use of one of the portals, and hope that chaos didn't throw them elsewhere. "But, calm yourself Kasimir. Dallas hasn't imploded, and you've been sitting pretty these last few months. It won't hurt you to do some actual work." June added with a mischievous grin.

"Hammerstein isn't allowed to be removed from duty without getting bound." He pointed out quite calmly. "Regardless of illness." An unspecified one at that. He shook his head. "We'd have to visit Dallas for that alone. And you know perfectly well I do actual work." He said, feigning an injured sniff, before smiling at her.

"They have done...well on the case work, but I don't trust someone so careless as to expose our world to the mundanes once already as an archivist, and Hammerstein isn't to be trusted unbound and working free. You and I both know that the lure of those arts is too much for even the strongest of minds to resist, once they've begun them. Given Hammerstein's past, I would not say he hasn't the strongest of minds." He sighed and shook his head. "You are right though. Something about Dallas just upsets me, whenever I think of it." It was the same with Dumitrescu and it wasn't something he understood in anyway at all.

"Ill or not, I'll go to put the binding on the contractor, and investigate the archivist, make certain he isn't about to foolish do magic amongst mundanes again."

June just rolled her eyes and gave a half laugh half snort at Kasimir's reply. "Of course you do, and I'm the bloody Queen of England." The woman pointed out mockingly. They both knew that the only work Kasimir did was when it came time to annoy the Dallas office, or make Dumitrescu's life a living hell. "So you agree that the current team is making headway on the backlog then? I knew it, you're getting soft." June added crossing her arms and leaning back into her chair.

"Careless? There may be a reason Dumitrescu appointed him as archivist you realize. It may be a way to keep him out of further trouble." She pointed out, hardly having found the move careless. If you asked her Kurt was better served as an archivist than an actual contractor in a public facing position. "As for Hammerstein and Dallas, wait and see. You may be surprised." Or at least she hoped that the other would wait and reserve judgement, instead of throwing a tantrum that things hadn't gone his way.

"Dumitrescu certainly wasn't careless in it. I'll give her this: She's a woman who puts thought into her actions." He just rarely agreed with said thoughts. Still, his eyes narrowed and he frowned. "...If you hadn't spoken wisdom so often in the past, I'd likely completely disregard your wait and see with Hammerstein and Dallas both."

Unfortunately, he did rather respect the others opinion. He considered her a very intelligent councilor and usually didn't mind her at all, unlike Summers who he really wanted to strangle at times. What McBride had been thinking, he didn't know. Then again, he often found himself feeling that way about all of McBride's little legacy left behind. Summers, Dumitrescu, that boy, and, of course, Dallas.

Something about ti all just made him angry. He could never put it in words either, or pin point what. If he wasn't so powerful, he'd assume someone had bespelled him. "And you and I both know I'm not getting soft. And that I work." He just mostly worked on the political aspects of the council, which often, to him at least, rarely felt like a job at all. He had an assistant for paperwork and the like, why would he handle much of it himself. "You're just jealous of my assistant." He was an excellent assistant, after all.

June just gave Kasimir a shrug, "Maybe, maybe not. Some of us don't foist everything off on our assistant though." She said as she took a glance at the clock on her desk. "How soon are you planning on leaving on this little investigation Klein? Because you know there are time differences." June remarked blithely. The man was a pompous asshole nine times out of ten, but he knew his stuff, and most days that was all June cared about.

"Soon enough. I have an overnight bag packed in my office." They were called to move and quickly, at times. "If I'm too early or too late, I'll just grab a hotel." He waved it off easily. The man was used to working and doing things at odd hours. It was part of the work, that was all.

"And I hardly foist everything off on my assistant. Just most of it. He'll need to know it when I retire anyway." If he ever retired. It was a bit of a toss up. What would he do retired anyway? Besides, he enjoyed the power of being a councilor too much to just give in to it all anyway. "What time is it there anyway?"

"You? Retire?" June said before dissolving into a fit of laughter. She couldn't see Kasimir, the control freak, relinquishing his post on Council. He enjoyed causing drama entirely too much, especially when it involved certain people too. Although she suspected that he was loathe to admit how useful it was to have an experienced liaison to the Fae's court. "That's the best thing I've heard all week!" She cackled as she stood up from her chair.

Taking a few breaths, she straightened her face and smoothed her skirt. "Anyway, it looks like it's about ten in the evening over there." June added as she reached across her desk to grab a small wood and brass clock. "Depending on how long your trip through the portal takes, you could arrive anytime between thirty minutes from now and breakfast. Take your pick Klein."

He glared at the laughter and waited until she had calmed down. "I'll take the chance." He said drily. He could retire, eventually. Potentially. It would just be boring as hell to be retired. Besides council politics were much less bloody than the vampire politics he would be dealing with much more often when he was retired.

"Will you be joining me? They like you there significantly more than they do me." Not that this was uncommon at all. He was a likeable man and he did not try to be. He had his own plans after all. They included allies to be sure, which he had, but not friends.

"If only to watch you squirm around Dumitrescu's secretary." June remarked sarcastically. The reason the Dallas office tended to prefer to deal with her was she didn't go parading around like Kasimir tended to. Nor did she dig through people's offices or take up residence in them without their consent. All and all she thought he'd be much more likable if he just used some common courtesy and manners. "But yes, I will be going, someone has to be a neutral party in this whole mess you're so convinced is happening." She answered in her typical round about way.

As much as she'd have liked to avoid having to go any place with Kasimir, she saw no way around it. There had to be someone who they would communicate with, and someone to put leash on the other Councilor.

The descent into the archives was, for the most part peaceful. Well, for him it was. For the director and the assistant director, he was sure they were feeling rather run ragged. "...cancer. If that's the problem with the boy, of course he can't be on the rolls." He finished up as the elevator doors opened to the archives. "However, that hardly changes the fact that I'm going to have to put a binding on him. Given his magic, it may even slow down the spread." He pointed out to Reznik, who nodded, rather wanting the other man to leave, and leave now.

It wasn't to be. Kasimir was having entirely too much fun with his surprise inspection to just up and leave. The man smiled as he glanced about the archives. Now this was a familiar site. It seemed that the only thing that changed about archives over the centuries was what the files were stored in. He glanced around and shrugged. "Now, point out this Kurt Bannon to me so I can get this interview over with." The man didn't want to waste too much time on ensuring that this particular peon wasn't about to go spilling the secrets of the Unseen to mortals, again. The inspection had enough other aspects to it after all.

The best part, of course, had been the element of surprise to the entire thing. He did like hassling offices in his official capacity. Dallas was the most fun because of the expression on Catherine's face when she saw him, of course, but he was known for doing this around the globe.

Kurt gave a thin, leathery smile. The guy was definitely starting to show his age. "Good afternoon, gentlemen," he managed before remembering to put down the book. "Can I, uh, help you find anything?"

He wasn't sure exactly what was going on, but given the unchanged expression on the faces of the newcomers, something was up. That was the look Catherine gave him whenever he did something bone-headed. "Is something the matter?" He nervously adjusted his new green archivist's robe. Or at least, it was something he wore to feel more official. Okay, it was a new bath robe.

"...A little help here? This is, uh, quite unexpected. Please tell me why you're here."

Kasimir stared at this man in shock. Was that a bathrobe? The councilor, once he regained his senses turned to the director. "Director Reznik, I was not aware that MCU was in the habit of hiring madmen." He said, speaking slow, so said madman could understand exactly what he was saying. Was he spending the night in the archives or some sort of nonsense like that? The councilor frowned. "Please tell me that this isn't Bannon?"

The director swallowed, then spoke. "Councilor, may I introduce you to our newest archivist, Kurt Bannon. I'm sure he's just unaware of the dress code, sir. I'll get him briefed straight away." He assured the much more powerful man and said man looked Kurt over, derision clear in his eyes. This man could not be allowed to get away with besmirching MCU like this. Kasimir took it much too seriously to allow this nonsense to continue.

"...I believe I shall wait until Mr. Bannon is appropriately attired before I speak with him. I'll be upstairs in either the conference room, or June's office."

Kurt flushed, cowering behind his book. "D-dress code? I just thought it made me look more...scholarly?" He sighed and took the robe off, revealing an otherwise passable outfit of a black cardigan with khakis and wingtip shoes. What was it with first days on the job that made them suck?

"S-sir? Is this okay? I just wanted to look the part and not just another office worker...I'm really sorry..." Kinda meek and lukewarm response. Very beta. "I...if I'm passable now, I guess we could have that conference. I wasn't told there would be an inspection." Then he did something he almost never did. He took the stairs like a normal person, following Kasimir to the designated meeting point with his tail between his legs the whole time.

He may not have the best fashion sense. Or people sense. But damn it, he was good at his job...why couldn't people like him?

"You are an office worker Bannon." Klein said once they sat down. The outfit would do. "For future references, business wear is expected of out officers. You are to wear business casual, as an archiver. Certainly not a bathrobe." This was turning out to be quite the inspection already. Lovely. He really did prefer things to go smoothly. With a sigh, he looked over this archiver.

"You have been singled out due to your previous incident in the midwest. So far, I am not convinced you won't manage to blow your cover to the mundanes, again. So Bannon, convince me you aren't an extreme liability to MCU."

A Bathrobe! He really had intended to be fairly lenient on the fellow, but it looked like he'd have to play hardball after all. Perhaps he told people he was a madman, to get them to think nothing of his wearing a bathrobe to work of all places.
