Kurt Bannon

The MCU's resident expert in getting to where the action is. -MCU Contractor

0 · 639 views · located in The Detroit Facilities

a character in “The Unseen World: MCU Archives”, as played by LawOfTheLand

Description

Kurt now acts in a semi-official capacity as a paranormal private eye and contractor with the Mythical Crimes Unit, using both magical and mundane investigative methods to get to the bottom of baffling cases. His pale blue eyes, salt and pepper hair, and lean body on a 5'8 frame let his unassuming guise gather information from a wide variety of sources. He's known to use magic if he ever gets stuck, but he's always sure to back up whatever he gains from that with hard evidence so it will stand in court.

His specialty is teleportation magic, the better to follow up on leads from all over the city, though he's also familiar with basic offensive and defensive spells should he ever find himself set upon by hired goons or traveling to dangerous areas.

So begins...

"Okay. So you have a list of alibis that you need me to follow up? Well, first, I'm happy that you remembered me and my special talents. Second, I'm on the job. Send me a list of locations and I'll get it done in probably one or two business days, depending on when places are open and how long it takes to corroborate each story. Yes, thank you again, Lieutenant. Good day."

Kurt Bannon angrily jabbed the End Call button on his smartphone and kicked out of his favorite easy chair. As a contractor for the MCU with a specialty in teleportation, he was indeed the ideal choice to zap all over the metro area and find out who checked out and who looked suspicious. Once he got a list of places of business in a text and operating hours from a few Google searches (who said mages couldn't use technology?) the search was on. First, Sallie and Zitkalasa. One was working at a hair salon, the other was purchasing fabric for an upcoming theater show. First to see if there really was a theater show coming up...if there wasn't, that blew her story open. That part didn't need his gifts. The other, well, hairdressers heard and saw a lot of things.

Going down the list, he noted Penny and Gilbert were both in meetings with clients. Those would be easy enough to confirm by looking at records of scheduled visits, though that would require a competent secretary. Kirk was just a salaryman...likely to evade the notice of co-workers, which made visiting his place as soon as possible a priority before things went back to business as usual.

Leila said she was out of town at some sort of dig. A quick search to see if there was in fact a dig going on...the key to his effectiveness was knowing when he could afford to be lazy and knowing when he needed to exert effort. Finally, Addy and Fermin both worked at schools. Getting into those would be pretty difficult. At least Fermin had office hours, and thus was intentionally available for this sort of thing.

"All right. Then it's settled. Kirk first." He went over to his crystal ball and cast his senses to the wider world, using Mapquest to navigate his remote sensor to that address before zeroing his gaze, as if projecting himself through the ball to pop out in an empty area close by before entering the building. It was very important that the unseen world stay that way, after all.

Badge? Check. Wand? Check. Wallet? Check. Business casual suit...eh, close enough. Time to earn his paycheck. SCHLOOOMP went his body through the ball to the remote sensor, taking the ball with him so he could do it again.

As he entered the office where Kirk worked, he'd be stopped by a receptionist, smiling brightly and moving to intercept him. "Hello, and welcome to Hypedyne Industries. How can I help you?" Her job was to make certain people didn't get past her without an appointment or a damn good reason after all. The woman had no clue that Kurt was there on police business, and she had no clue he needed anything at all.

Hypedyne Industries, while still relatively small, specialized in the unusual but lucrative practice of temporary office spaces, or rather, they held several buildings and small businesses or ones just in the area for recruiting could rent a prefabricated, furniture and decor included office from them for a reasonable fee. This particular man was underdressed to be someone here to rent from them, and she doubted he was here to check on the pricing schedule.

Kurt wasted no time in flashing his badge and imitating a Deep South drawl. "Sorry to bother you, madam. But I'm here on official business. One of your clients, Kirk...Vaughan, is a person of interest in an ongoing investigation. I'd like to know if he was in the building from 9 am to 5 pm on Friday, September 18th, since that's the statement he gave when he was taken in for questioning. Just crossing T's, dotting I's, and making sure everything checks out, ma'am."

The receptionist smiled and then led the way to the desk. "Kirk is here six days a week. Give me a moment please." She said and brought up the shared calendar. She hmmed and then smiled. "It looks like it. He had a few meetings. Kirk often works late too. He's usually here when I come in and when I leave." She considered it and then shrugged. "Monday to Saturday. Nine to five minimum and then half days on Saturdays." He was very dedicated to his work at least.

"Thank you kindly, Miss, that's all I needed. You have yourself a fine day." And he went back into the alley, popping in and out around the town. Most of the leads did in fact check out, but a few raised red flags. Fermin's office hours didn't match up with the time the crime was committed, and the two Asians, Hanh Dam and Jung Chu, were probably lying through their teeth just to get away from Catherine. Two more he had yet to verify either way were Loretta and Gilbert. Time to put in a call to HQ...but it wasn't safe to use his phone. This one had to be done over a more secure network. Telepathy.

Yeah, HQ, it's me, Kurt. Put me through to the Warden, or at least pass the message. I've finished my preliminary investigation. I have five alibis that haven't checked out just yet. Fermin's office hours didn't hold water, no word either way on Loretta or Gilbert, and Hanh Dam and Jung Chu probably lied to get away from you. I'm pretty bushed, so I'll tackle those in more depth tomorrow.

Kurt dropped to one knee, panting a bit before opening another dimension door back to his house. That was going to take the last of his energy. If they needed him more, it would just have to wait.

"Phew. I haven't had to zip around town like that in a long time...but I will admit, getting so much done in a single day feels really damn good."

It was a little past one am. The moon was high and Dallas was asleep as it ever got. In a nice neighborhood, a brunette strung out woman in her twenties, eyes blank, walked up Catherine Dumitrescu’s driveway. Half was up it, she paused only to dry swallow two pills and then continue on, her steps becoming more and more erratic as she did so. She made her was to the back before she took a small collapsible police baton out of her pocket and took it to the window closest to Catherine’s back door, hitting and hitting again until the window was open enough for her to walk through, though it drew blood.

Around her shimmered a fine aura of necromantic magic. This woman was no zombie, but was a thrall.

---

In a rundown apartment block, in a rundown neighborhood, an older man climbed the fire escape, a crowbar in hand. He stopped at one of the landings and stared at the window, eyes blank and sightless before he took the crowbar too it, the aura of necromancy about him flaring with each hit. He crawled through once there was room, despite the fresh blood the shards of the window drew. He began to seek out Kurt immediately, crow bar raised, eyes empty.

---

In one of the many business districts, at Visual Eyes Art, two men, weedy thin, and obvious drug addicts stood outside the shop windows, iron bars in their hands. They began to hit the windows, breaking them open. At the shattering of the glass, a light upstairs turned one, even as the two climbed inside.

---

In a quiet neighborhood, not in the best part of town but not in serious gangland, a heavily muscled dark teen, tattooed and reeking of necromantic magic took a baseball bat to the living room window of the Seychelle house, small are the two bedroom place was. The teen climbed in and began to head for Laura’s room, heedless of any attempts to stop him.

Catherine had gone to bed early after a long, and difficult day at MCU; none the wiser to the current status of her home, and it's visitor. Sleeping fitfully, she tossed and turned in the bed, only beginning to be dimly aware of the banging coming from outside. Rolling over she pulled a pillow over her head and tried to sink back into the darkness of sleep. 'Stupid kids...' She thought groggily as she banging grew louder and louder until there was a loud crash.

"The hell?" She mumbled rolling over again and sitting up in the bed. "God damned neighbors.." There were times when she really enjoyed the quiet Lakewood neighborhood, and other times when she really considered moving somewhere else.

Up the stairs the woman went, stepped more and more erratic as she stumbled and made her way, the police baton held high. Unerringly, the thrall made her way towards Catherine. The necromancy aura flared and twisted and searched and found, and the thrall forced open the door to Catherine’s bedroom and kept coming to her.

The bloody scratches from the glass were still bleeding. This thrall was not dead, but alive, and the drugs she had taken would push her past her usual limits, forcing her to not feel anything wrong, any thing broken or that might hurt.

But there was a woman inside that emptiness.

Unsure of what was really going on, Catherine sat there on the edge of the bed, her sleepy brain trying to make sense of everything. Didn't she had wards on house or had she forgotten to activate them in her exhaustion earlier in the night? "I could have sworn I.." She muttered fumbling in the pitch black of the house.

Then something began to tug in the back of her mind, telling her that it wasn't just a drunken neighbor or animal that had caused the noise. Peering through the darkness, she thought she noticed the outline of someone standing in the doorway to the bedroom. Instead of screaming, or shouting, she slid her hand down the side of the bed and reached for her gun. If the intruder was human, that would definitely be easier to explain than anything else she could have done to them.

Said intruder kept coming closer, baton held out. Not speaking, it lunged for her, and rose the baton to strike her with. The woman didn't even notice as the necromantic energy spread the length of the baton. Oh yes, she needed to kill him, to kill this woman in front of her. With a cry, she attacked, at the behest of her master.

The woman was going to die and she would be the cause. And when she was, perhaps she would have control of herself once more.

Rolling off across the bed, Catherine didn't have time to grab her gun before the baton came down to strike. "Fuck this..." She muttered as she stood up. Without her gun she was limited in what she could pass off as a normal breaking and entering case. "I don't know how you got in, but you need to leave." She said matter of factly, though feeling rather foolish saying that as she stood there in her purple polka dot pajamas. However, she had begun to notice the necromantic energy radiating from the woman. "Shit... I really hope you aren't another zombie."

The only response this would get is another lunge and another attempted strike, along with a shout of determination from the thrall. This was no zombie though, merely a woman under the control of a necromancer, possessed by a spirit the necromancer had bound. Voice garbled, as if she was fighting every word she spoke, she stated her mission. "Cath'rine...Dumi...trescu...mus' die." She swung the baton down then up, knowing the force the metal pole would have, if only she could connect.

Catherine stood there in shock, trying to make sense of what the woman had just said. She knew that she had probably made a number of enemies, but this was beyond ridiculous. "That's nice, but I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon." She said sarcastically. This was getting old and quick, but as the thrall begun swinging the metal baton, Catherine tried to make it a point to get away. However, exhausted from the last two days, her reserves were close to depleted, she couldn't move quickly enough. Instead of avoiding a strike from the baton, pain exploded in her side and arm from the striking baton. Wincing in pain, Catherine held her side and began to cast her senses out now realizing that this wasn't some strange joke.

While she couldn't necessarily break the necromancer's hold on whatever this thing was, she could hopefully get rid of it. "Empty.. and yet.." She muttered struggling against the binding that prevented her from doing anything other than a brief scan.

"Hrm...err...who's there?" Kurt stirred from his evening ritual at the knock on the door. Oh shit. Man with a crowbar and he was out of most of his peaceful spells. Looked about his age. The dude looked like he was stoned off his ass. Kurt made sure to check his door locks and pulled a book out to check what he had left. Oh good. Still had mage sight. Kurt fired that off as his brain went to work. There was hardly any chance this dude was some strung-out psycho. To come this far off the fire escape, and to stop here...someone knew where he was. Someone had a reason to seek him out. Someone wanted to send a message by bringing a lethal improvised weapon.

In short, this whacko's appearance was most likely not an accident. This was a hit. Time to go full offense. As he waited for the mage sight to ferret out information on what sorts of magical mayhem was afoot, he pulled a wand from his end table and got ready to pelt the would-be intruder with a few magic missiles.

The woman dropped, very dead. Across town, Brandon had managed to kill one of the thralls and was fighting off the other. In the Seychelle house, the mother screamed out as the thrall used Laura as a shield, preventing the father from shooting him as he baked out of their home.

In Kurt's home however, the thrall smashed against the lock and the door until they broke open and it walked in, the jagged edges of the entrance it making catching his skin and breaking it, drawing blood. The man held up the crowbar and prepared to hit Kurt with the crowbar.

The mage sight would reveal that this was a human in thrall, deeply spelled by a talented necromancer into doing their biding, however unwilling said human may be. But there was no fighting the thrall for this one. Drugged to push past their limits, this thrall didn't fight back, just pushed forward to attack.

"Gods forgive me for what I must do," Kurt prayed quickly. If arcane power was real, who knew what else. Before the thrall could get within arm's reach, Kurt shouted the trigger completion words for the wand to fire bolts of power and knock his assailant back.

"Ekkusu busuta!" Translucent missiles of pure force rippled through the air, aimed at the center of mass to act as man-stoppers. He wasn't going to let up until the man stopped twitching or he knocked him off the fire escape and down the several stories to the cold pavement below.

Was the man innocent? Probably, but one of them was going to die tonight. Self defense training had taught the wizened wizard how to make sure it would be the other guy. And so the missiles kept coming, a veritable magical machine gun.

The thrall managed to take one step closer, before he was forced back by the magic missiles, back and back again stumbling with each one. Despite attempting to push forward, this was a mundane man, spelled or not, and soon he gave out and went over the edge. He couldn't help but fall, landing head first with a sickening crack. The thrall had been pushed by the force of his magic and hadn't been given any resistance to the magic at hand.

An innocent man had died, and the necromantic magic abandoned the body. It was okay in the necromancer's view. The distraction for that one hadn't lasted as long, but it hadn't needed too, it had only needed to force him to use up more of his magic stores. In that, the attack had succeeded.

Tripping over the debris and detritus that had been left in the wake of the attack, Catherine grabbed the phone in the hallway. "Yes?" She snapped. There was a dead woman in her house, and she was running on empty. The problem could be remedied, but she really didn't want to go down that avenue right then and there.

"It's 3:00 o'clock in the god damn morning.. this had better be good."

"Try two fucking thralls attacking the shop, and a panicked phone call from Laura's parents asking to let them or the police know if I see her, as she's been kidnapped by what sounds like another." Brandon growled into the phone, clearly not happy. "It's 3 o'clock in the damn morning. Who the fuck pulls this shit, and how the fuck am I going to find that damn trouble magnet?"

And she was one hell of a trouble magnet. It was driving him insane.

Catherine sighed as she listened to her nephew on the other side of the phone. "One just attacked me here." She replied, grimacing in pain from the bruises. "I don't know who does this Brandon." Catherine added tiredly. So much for getting a clean up team out, or even sleeping; the woman had seen to that easily.

"Look, call the office and they'll send someone out. It's going to take me awhile to get anywhere." What exactly was she going to do with the body? This had complicated things greatly.

On the other end, Brandon ran a hand through his hair, frustrated. "It's just...it's Laura, and it's probably the damn necromancer causing this mess, and that kid's so fucking innocent. She doesn't deserve to be in the hands of that level of evil." It wasn't like it had been with him. He was evil as hell, before Sanina had ever even gotten her hands on him, and he was pretty certain even Bethy's hands hadn't been clean, despite being five and having zero concept of death at all. Nervous, he ran a hand through his hair again. "I can't even call the coven I've been cast out of for advice on what spell to use, because it could be one of them." And the only spell he could think of was a major no go as far as the council was concerned.

"I know you're probably worried about her ..." Catherine said trailing off, unsure of what to say next. "And you're right, it probably is the necromancer causing the mess... the thrall reaked of necromanic magic." She just wanted to go back to bed, and back to sleep. "Coven's are overrated anyway, more trouble than an HOA."

She did not want to be having this conversation, she did not even want to be there, and be awake. "Look, I'm running on close to 3 hours of sleep here. Unless you have a way to get the mess over here cleaned up, I can't be of any help to anyone."

Kurt, for his part, was busy processing everything he had put aside in order to deal with the situation. It wasn't his first time that he had to fight for his life in his adventures through the realms, but this was an innocent dude! Fingers shook as he picked up his private line to the MCU to report things like firing his weapon as well as the unusual circumstances. They'd know who to get in contact with...

Okay, now to check on some other assets in the area, make sure this was just an isolated incident. Time to call up Brandon...because there was no way he was risking Catherine's ire at this insane hour. "Y-yeah, hi, Brandon? It's Kurt. A dude just showed up at my house. I'm calling all my friends, letting them know I took care of him, wondering if you're okay..."

"I'll contact MCU to handle it here." He said and sighed. "The two here reeked of it two. It's familiar, but I don't know whose it was." He hated to admit that. Frazzled he ran a hand through his hair. "I'll send someone there too, and, I guess we'll see each other at the station soon enough." He frowned. "A minute. Someone's calling." At three in the fucking morning. What more could go wrong?

He switched lines and then frowned as Kurt spoke. "You too? Listen, call MCU to come clean up. Something's got Laura. I think we'll all be needed to take statements and other things at the station, and to figure out how to get the kiddo back." When they didn't even know where she was, or why the necromancer wanted her. "I've got Aunt Catherine on the other line. I need you to call MCU now, alright?"

Catherine had been about to say something when the line clicked over to silence. "Wait, what?" She muttered looking at the phone for a moment. She obviously wasn't going to get any sleep, they'd want her in for questions as soon as possible, Brandon was right. Reaching over to turn on a light, the entire upstairs was a complete mess. Furniture had been tipped over, pictures in their frames broken, and mud from the rain tracked up the stairs.

"Cleaning this is going to take awhile.."
