Kurt finally woke up at an odd hour, his body still trying to adjust to being vigilant at night after the attack. A wizard needed his sleep to get the spells he needed, after all. Huh. New voice mail. He ended up leaving one back.

"Hey, Brandon, it's Kurt. Just got your message. Sorry, but I had to regain my spells for the day when you called. After chasing the leads, there's only one person we've interviewed that could have had a hand in making those thralls. Thanks for the heads-up, I'll be presenting my findings there. Hopefully we can put a stop to this before it's too late. See you there." The whole thing sounded like he had a frog in his throat, but he was still waking up.

Breakfast consisted of chicken fried rice and a powdery substance mixed in with water. Hey, it broke the fast, didn't it? After throwing on his uniform, he teleported over to HQ, doing the receptionist the small favor of appearing right in front of her instead of straight to his office. A quick flash of his badge, a manila envelope under his arm, and he was ready to present his findings to the rest of the staff.

"All right. The caffeine might not have kicked in yet, but I notice that some of us are missing. Brandon's the one that told me this was all hands, so where the hell is he?" Kurt looked around the room, incredulous. "Unless that kid's starting a new pot of coffee, it's too early for this bullshit."

Rafael just walked into the room as Kurt was blabbering on about how they all were not there. He was dressed cleanly in a pair of jeans with a polo on tucked into his jeans. The MCU badge was displayed on his belt next to the magazine clips for the CZ 75 Sp-01 shadow. The gun itself was on his right hip snugly kept in the Bravo Concealment holster. The brown leather jacket was on his left forearm and leather bound notebook in hand.

"Good Morning everyone." His voice rather cold and more of a forced cheerful. He took his seat placing the leather bound notebook down with the jacket as he stared expectantly at Kurt.

"So I take it we're going to be waiting a bit more then. So who's up for a game of Russian Roulette?" His voice lost the cold edge from before as it took on a more cheerful room with Rafael looking about the room.

"Let's not..." Catherine remarked dryly as she entered the conference room. Getting in that morning had been more difficult than she cared to talk about; especially after Brandon had essentially left her hanging, without ever showing to pick her up. With her left arm now in a cast and sling for the next 8 weeks, or at least until another solution was reached, life just became all the more difficult. "And I'm sorry Kurt, Brandon never showed up this morning to give me a ride, and he's not answering his cell." Catherine knew that the other would occasionally screen his calls, but never to this extent.

Removing and setting down her bag, Catherine took a seat at the table. Desk duty meant slightly more dressy clothing as she was restricted from being out in the field, so she had shown up for the meeting in a navy pant suit with heels and white silk blouse. "Did he ever call you Kurt?" She asked reaching down into her bag for something.

"He left a voicemail with me, I left one with him, he hasn't called me back yet," Kurt sighed to the Warden. "Anyway. Here are my findings. From my investigations, there were a number of alibis that either didn't check out or were untruthful. I was going to spend the next day chasing down those other leads, but fate intervened when everyone got a zombie." Here he pulled out the reports he got from the envelope. "Autopsy reports of the thralls revealed the presence of hair from an African-American on two of them. There's only one black person we've interviewed with a bad alibi, and that's Loretta Brown, so she's my main suspect at the moment. With Samhain approaching, I have a bad feeling about what will happen if we don't manage to track her down in time."

Kurt took a long sip of his juiced-up water, then took a few calming breaths. "That's all. Anyone else have something to add?"

"I'm still pushing for this game of Russian Roulette." Rafael chimed in.

He was patiently tapping his fingers on his book as he looked about the room.

"We could also just get going out into the field instead of sitting here lollygagging around with our thumbs up our asses. This kid has either one or two things wrong. He's passed out drunk worst than I am on Veterans Day or he was kidnapped by one of the people were looking for. In my best tactical opinion I say we move out find this Loretta Brown while we keep constant communications back here in case something happens." Rafael paused for a moment as he looked around.

"We keep two tactical teams on stand by in order to back us up with something truly cataclysmic happens that not even myself in my high level skill can't take care of." Rafael finally stopped as he looked about the room calmly once more resting his stare on Kurt.

"Alright, well I'll try again later." She replied to Kurt with a slight sigh. Catherine was going to have words with her nephew over whatever ridiculous stunt he decided to play this time. "Loretta Carlson..." She corrected pushing her irritation aside for the moment. "While she may seem like our main suspect, I would look into Hanh Dam, and possibly Jung Chu. Keep in mind that these persons have to have the power, and experience required to produce a thrall." It seemed like everyone had their own ideas about what happened, or who did it, and unfortunately for them no one could agree.

"I'm currently restricted to desk duty, as is Kurt here, so it's up to Warden Bennet, and yourself Mr. Fisher." Catherine continued, wondering where the hell Bennet was. It wasn't normal for a Warden to miss a staff meeting or be late. Perhaps there was a bit of jet lag to take into account, but either way there was probably going to be a meeting between the two of them after this, just to get the poor man caught up.

"You're right, Warden. My apologies. And with all due respect, with Samhain upon us, not to mention this region's historical distrust of black people, I move that we adjourn this meeting and issue an arrest warrant for Miss Carlson. If she didn't make the thralls, then she most likely had a hand in their acquisition or creation. That's probable cause, right? Also, I think I could port a field team in, but they'll have to get themselves out." Nodding to Rafael and his enthusiasm for firearms.

"All right. We've only got a few days before the kids start roaming the streets. Plus now's a great time to show up and stop any Devil's Night shenanigans. Warden Dumitrescu, I defer to you by virtue of rank on this decision." It seemed that the caffeine was finally starting to kick in for the wizard.

"Fine. I'll go get all the necessary paperwork prepped and other bs before we get to the fun stuff."

Rafael was moving to stand up he picked up his coat reaching into the inside pocket to pull out the flask. He took a swig from it as he gathered his things to leave the room.

"I'll inquire about a warrant, it shouldn't be that difficult to get one handed down.. so go ahead. Let's get this the hell over with." Catherine agreed, giving both Rafael and Kurt permission to carry out their plan. As long as it didn't back fire, she was content with not having to deal with either of the two for awhile. "And Mr. Fisher, I'd prefer it if you left your drinking to off duty hours. Understood?" She said pointing her pen at Rafael as he took a drink from his flask.

"If that's it, then I'll let you gentlemen get started." Catherine remarked, her tone blithe, despite the lack of sleep and rough start to the day.

Ezra felt too old to be caught doing something so stupid. The route that a few hours ago had been a refreshing walk was now spend running and cursing. One didn't simply oversleep, no matter how foolishly long one remained awake. In the end all it had done was blur the words together into one big grey haze.

He looked at his watch for what felt like the hundredth time. Twenty minutes late by the time he reached the precinct, this was going to leave a fantastic first impression.
“I apologize for my tardiness.” No, there weren’t strong enough words for this. He looked around, spotting Warden Dumitrescu but not Mr. Hammerstine. Strange, he’d been under the impression that they’d arrive together. Had he already left? He looked around trying to figure out the situation.

Loretta’s apartment hadn’t turned up anything, including Loretta. Now it was time to serve the warrant to Hanh Dam, and Rafael Fisher and Ezra Bennet would find themselves in front of a pretty, nondescript teal bungalow home, with a fenced in garden that had sunflowers growing along the side of the house.

It certainly didn’t look like it could possibly house a dangerous necromancer, or anything remotely dangerous at all. The teal house had a white door, and a mailbox stand shaped like a manatee or all things. Two decorative columns held up a roof overhang and the drive had been created out of cobblestones.

All in all it was a peaceful looking home, but there was a car in the driveway and one parked on the street. Someone, at least, was home.

Rafael sat in the black Ford Crown Victoria with Ezra in the passenger seat. They had arrived at the location with Rafael looking the scene over carefully made not of a few key features. He took in the scene once again before grabbing his Vertx EDC Commuter bag.

"The two cars there we either need to slash the tires or put spikes under them to make sure they don't get too far. I say we have two options here we can go up knock on the door and try to be nice about this. The other option will have us split up with me kicking down the front door while you go through the rear. We'll clear the house and then look for anything if no one is there. We shoot to wound but if that is not possible go for the kill shot. But these are just the tactical solutions that would work best in this situation." Rafael fished out a few CZ Sp-01 18 round mags and a few speedloaders full of .357 Magnum rounds.

The bullets each has various runes carved into them for some odd reason. The speedloaders and mags went into their respective holsters while Rafael checked over his guns and tested the UV flashlight fitting onto the CZ. He had another one sitting on his belt in case he had to switch to the Wiley Clapp Ruger Gp100. His outfit was rather nondescript with a pair of black Haix boots, simple jeans and a dark colored long sleeve Henley with a white under shirt. His aviators had been on the dash from the time they rolled up onto the scene itself.

This was exactly the kind of car one expected a police officer to have. Whether that made them more or less obvious, Ezra couldn’t really tell. He had sunk into the seat further and further during the drive, as if trying to disappear into the seat. “I’d prefer the spike option.”
He hadn’t even considered the necromancers might try to drive away, he’d personally been more preoccupied with wondering if they’d summon only a handful of corpses or if all of Dallas would be overrun by hellspawn. Well, if they did try, then their tires could deal with it, but he didn’t want to have to justify any lawsuits should they come out empty handed.

The scene was mockingly friendly. That house even had some bright flowers in the lawn and the nice facade made whatever dark things that may be happening in there even more grotesque. There was some deeper metaphor going on there, he was sure of it.
“You think the second version is the better solution?” He wasn’t confident splitting up was the wisest option given the uncertain circumstances, but having their suspects flee through the back wasn’t much of one either. However, did that even matter if they overpowered one of them together and escaped that way?
He padded his jacket were the holster was hiding beneath. The gun was standard issue and having its weight there already made him uncomfortable. Shooting to wound or shooting to kill really was something he hoped would not even become a necessary topic.

"Fine let's place the spikes. I would go with the first option we can act like regular detectives saying we are here on a missing property. Try to ask them mundane questions before we shoot into the real reason we are here. That sounds like the better option to me but it also puts us on a level playing field if a fight does break out." Rafael was pulling up the ammo can that held the road spikes setting it in his lap.

The call was ultimately up to Erza and Rafael was simply giving out his own personal field experience when dealing with such situations as there. Rafael himself was ready to go in shooting as that was an easier route to take out such beings that could overpower them with a simple flick of their wrist. But he would follow the orders given to him.

There would be no response to knocking, and so Ezra and Rafael would be forced to break into the home after they had taken care of the necromancer’s potential way of escape. The loud noise of the two doors slamming open resulted in no response however.

The modest home boasted an open floor plan, allowing Rafael and Ezra to see back into the house, only the bathroom and bedroom closed from their eyes. Two armchairs and a loveseat centered around a coffee table towards the front of the house. A book case was pressed against one wall. the kitchen, modest and with only a sink, a fridge, and a stove to go with its cabinets was empty and clean. The bathroom door was open revealing a modest bathroom as well, if slightly messy, with a towel on the floor visible through the doorway.

By the entrance to the bathroom was a rug pulled off to the side. Judging by the open trapdoor, it was clear that the rug had been moved for access. If Rafael and Ezra went back to the bedroom they would discover it empty as well, and slightly messy. There was evidence the bed had been slept in and the lingering scent of sex as well.

The trapdoor and the ladder leading down were likely the real jewels though.

Rafael flicked on the light switch next to the door after the main floor of the house had been cleared. He still had his CZ out and now aimed it over at the trap door. A wave with his left hand he motioned towards the trap door with two fingers pointed at it. Rafael kept his distance from the door with his weapon fixed on it.

"So who should go down first?" Rafael said as he looked over the door leading into darkness.

“Good, we agree on that.” He just now noticed the mailbox. A bit on the kitsch side of decor, in his humble opinion. Ezra wondered again if the non threatening appearance was calculated. It certainly could be but maybe his suspicion was already getting out of hand and muddled his judgement.
If they should continue to stay in the car for much longer, he would just keep rerunning the same thoughts.
They could check the cars for any hints when placing the spikes, he just hoped their suspects were too busy inside (baking would be nice, something innocent) to notice.

Maybe not all that innocent, judging from the state of the bedroom.
Or the fact there was a trapdoor leading to the basement, usually hidden underneath a rug. Probably with the necromancers downstairs, or it would have been covered up again.
“I’ll go.” It would hopefully give Fisher the chance to aim if he could distract them first. “If it’s clear I’ll tell you, but I doubt it. So follow closely anyway.”

The basement they had climbed down into appeared relatively empty, sans for boxes and the like, including a handful of lawn ornaments that looked like they had never been used. Hidden behind some boxes on the north wall however, there appeared to be an alcove with a door in it. Still, for now there was nothing in the area other than the door, and dust on the boxes.

Rafael looked over at the door once he entered the basement his pistol rested in a ready position aimed slightly at the ground. He looked over at the door as an expression that said "Hell no" crossed over his face.

"So I say we get the military, some napalm and possibly a bunker buster. There ain't no reason to go into a dungeon. I've seen enough horror movies and having my head lobbed off while body is used for a toy is not something I wish to go through." Rafael's voice a grim cheerful.

"Besides I left my holy sword back home next to my Paladin armor." Rafael went on he kept his focus on the door.

“Clear”, Ezra called up, hoping Fisher would here him despite keeping his voice cautiously low.
He had to agree, the way ahead did not look trustworthy. “You really should have brought it, no better place to use it than a necromancer’s crypt.” He looked around the room, trying to spot a trap or mechanism. Maybe there’d be some torches on the wall and spiderwebs for atmosphere. “If the MCU had those kind of resources, I doubt they would have send us. Come on, let’s go and find out what lies in store for us, Paladin Fisher.” This was a terrible idea and he knew it, but the mystery of what lay behind the door… he really wanted to find out. “Don’t forget: Only the penitent man shall pass.”
