Vera was rushing, threading the dress quicker then she did on most. She was arching her neck towards the window from the back room. Trying to get a glance, seeing that celebration had already began and she was late. Aunt Hattie's dress and fitting shop was right down town. The perfect place to be on a day like today. A few older women had wandered into the store, taking a break from the festivities. Vera's mother, Marie came up behind her, patting the girl on her shoulder. Vera bit her lip as the tiny threading needle pierced her finger. "Okay that's it I'm done" She mumbled setting down the pink and golden gown she had been sewing up.

Vera stood up placing her work over a wooden hanger and gently placing it with the rest of the finished dresses. Marie quickly advised her to meet back at the house later tonight and with a small peck on the cheek Vera had left the shop with the tiny entrance bell ringing.

There wasn't much Vera really intended to do that day, at the May Day village party. But the air was full of happiness. Walking down that street Vera was wearing a white shirt with green skirt that flowed nicely in the breeze. She had picked her outfit out to be more cheerful and almost vibrant. She walked with her eyes to the ground, keeping to herself Vera sat down on a bench and began fiddling with her fingers, she smiled gently taking in the festivities.

Vera began walking down the street, keeping her head low, avoiding children's games as they played in the streets. She decided some apple cider might be good at the moment, so moving her way to the cider cart she pulled out a nickel to the man running it. With out a word he took her nickel and poured the hot sugary drink for her. "Thank you sir" She smiled, gently placing her hands around the small cup. Taking a sip Vera stepped away from cart and looked out over the crowd.

It was strange for a girl that had lived here almost two years to still have no friends. The young girl pondered this statement as she made her way down the street. Every step she took a new activity was taking place in front of her, it was lovely. Near a tree and table off to the side Vera spotted William Thompson, that was someone she was actually familiar with, and even well, kind of liked. He'd only walked by her Aunt's shop a few times each week but Vera had been able to pick up his name from weekly customers and so just seeing him walk by almost day gave her something to look forward to. She smiled in his direction but over all avoided eye contact and continued on her walk, silently down the road taking in the cheerfulness around her and sipping hot cider.

"He's playing with boys younger than him, what makes him so special that you can't do the same? Even my brother Nathaniel whose a year younger than you is playing with the children, but then again he plays like that with Henry all the time. Plus you never know, maybe he watches you too, but only when your not looking."

Audrey laughed and added, "Actually I don't think boys could ever be so sly."

"Yes, now that Nathaniel and Henry are together I don't have to watch Henry. The food they have is always delicious, I hate that mother limits me to one dessert, so I get a second by asking father. Mother always gets so mad at him." Audrey laughed.

"I'm sure you don't want to hang out with a kid like me, what brings you away from the festivities, other than Will?" She grinned.

Audrey was explaining her one dessert crisis to Vera. She smiled, at the younger girl listening. "I'm sure you don't want to hang out with a kid like me, what brings you away from the festivities, other than Will?" Vera looked around at the festivities, it was a real treat to be out on a day like today. While everyone was happy and content that is, usually it was busyness threw out the street, with people barely stopping to say hello. Today was the opposite, and Vera liked that. "Well my Aunt owns her own dress shop down the road." Vera pivoted pointing quickly down the road then pulling her hand back to her side. "So I got off early today so I could take in all the cheerfulness, but you may know I need a break from it all, I don't think the adults want me in there way anyways" Even though she had come alone it didn't bother Vera very much, she didn't mind being off alone, though being antisocial was not part of her personality. The crowd was great today but she could not wait to get home and lay in bed, in the quiet. "If you'd like to get back to your game then go ahead" She added smiling and wondering if she was being anything of a nuisance to the girl.

"Nah, I'm good." She said as she watched the dark clouds maneuver in the distance.

"You're an adult, you can decide who you hang out with. Speaking of which, if you ever want to visit, I'm sure mother wouldn't mind you coming by." Audrey wiped dirt from the part on her dress she'd repaired on her own.

Henry ran up to Audrey and Vera shouting, "Save me he's gonna get me!"

Nathaniel was close behind and grabbed Henry, held him upside down and spun him around before laying him down. Nathaniel approached Audrey and Vera and said, "Hey sis, you just gonna watch them attack me and Will?"

"I'm watching you dirty your nice clothes and contemplating how angry mother's going to be." She smirked.

Henry shouted as he raised a stick above his head, "I got a sword dragon!"

"RAWR!" Nathaniel roared as he raised his hands over his head, impersonating a monster.

"Dragon? You know father doesn't like you giving him ideas like that."

"For using his imagination?"

"Are there dragons in your stories?"

"Maybe. Maybe not. It's my story, wait til its published."

"Dragon! Dragon!" Henry shouted as he ran back to the mob of children.

"Just don't let Father catch Henry saying those things."

"Henry! If you so much as mention the word 'Dragon' around father then a real dragon is going to come and eat you!" Nathaniel called to Henry who replied, "Noooo!"

Nathaniel had a playful grin on his face as he stared at Audrey. She had already learned how to imitate the face their mother would make when she wasn't pleased, but couldn't hold it for long before a smile crept across her face.

Vera followed Audrey's gaze up into the sky. Was it going to ran? She hadn't planned on rain for today, not to ruin the festival. "I'm sure mother wouldn't mind you coming by." Was all Vera could catch of Aubrey's sentence "What oh" She looked away from the clouds. "Well you have such a big family, I'm sure your mother's very busy." Vera smiled as Henry came up to the and began to yell, causing her to jump slightly at the child's loud voice. Then quite the argument began about dragons. Dragons what was wrong with that word, dragon's where a fairy tale creature. There was no such thing. But Vera kept herself quiet not wishing to join in the argument. She did though proceed to ask "What's wrong with dragons?"

"Father says there's more important things to think about than fairy tales." Audrey said.

"If he knew I was writing a story he'd burn it and give me more chores." Nathaniel said as his grin faded.

"He's burned one of his stories before." Audrey said.

"Would have been a best seller," Nathaniel said before running to catch up with Henry.

Audrey could tell Nathaniel was irritated and made a personal note to be at his defense later when mother saw their clothes.

"Yeah, father isn't a tyrant, except for imagination. Mother says the Infantry did it to him, but he only talks about that with her."
