She is the ship's AI. Through the ship's holographs you can see that she has brown eyes and long brown hair usually kept up in a bun. She's 5'4 with a slim waist with a medium sized chest which looks smaller because of her concealing clothes. In certain lights she looks like a slim young women with sharp features and in others she looks like a young adolescent boy.
She has access to everywhere in the ship and is always recording(stored outside he memory banks) just in case there is a mutiny or the ships is stolen by the enemy, but due to privacy laws she cannot go anywhere private without permission.
Years ago when humanity still used AI's in their daily lives Jane was embedded into a child at birth like all AI-other-half and grew up along side her human companion, Sam. Unlike most humans treating their "other half" like sophisticated toys/reminders David has always treated her like a younger sister, as if she was human. When all the other kids bought or made mods to change their AIOHs' appearances every year, Sam always asked for her opinion about how she wanted to grow in appearance(as in age). The only time she changed her appearance was when Sam was twelve and it was an awkward period for Sam who probably would have been teased if he had a weird AI "younger sister" following him around(a gender mod). As a sophisticated Ship's AI she is equipped with the ability to change her appearance at will though, she chose her appearance from the time time periods in her life when she was most happy. Her love with Sam was a taboo in society and unrequited but accepted her fate as Sam grew older, got married to a women named Catherine and even had a son. She learned to get along with Sam's Wife's AIOH named Andrew as a friend and even raised Sam's son Carter and his AIOH Sammy like they were her own children. But then Sam's family died in a car accident and Sam blamed himself for it and became a drunkard. Even Sammy and Andrew's personality chips were crushed. Jane was devastated right along with Sam but Sam could not see it, withdrawing into himself and when she tries to console him he just yells back at her about her being just an AI. Eventually the only interaction between them is when Sam asks her to replay his video from his AIOH camera of his family over and over.
She became like every other AIOH by keeping her person safe by dampening any harm he came into contact with which he did frequently after his family's death(suicide attempts) by using the small gravity manipulator that comes with every AIOH port(she could have touched Sam if she chose to). She became an observer in her own life, watching as Sam quickly grew old and died.
After her person died and she lacked any immediate family she should have been decommissioned but because of some current AI rights group around the time her memories and personalty chip were saved for a possible future recommission(job this time).
Jane even has her own cabin in the ship close to where her memory chip is kept and was even given personal effects by the company that recommissioned her (her personal belongings both have a physical and holographic version so that she can keep it on her person). She has a locket that contains a picture of Sammy, Carter, Sam, Andrew and even Catherine.
She will sometimes unconsciously allow holographs of Sammy and Carter to play around the ship, no one will actually see them though but they can hear them. So the ship could be said to be haunted by children's ghost since they are created by Jane herself to as a weird Semi-independent AIs that acts outside of her will.
Jane is withdrawn and has abandonment issues but was deemed mentally stable enough to go about her duties as a Ship's AI system by an AI psychologist. And although she plans to be entirely professional on this job, she gets easily attached to people.
