The Story So Far... Write a Post » as written by 5 authors
Ellie sat on the dusty dirty couch surrounded by strangers. Her brother, Scott was sitting next to her on the floor with his legs pulled up to his chest and his head buried in his arms. It was about three hours ago when her and the small group of people she was with stumbled upon this rundown dirty apartment. They where trying to escape those...creatures, Walkers to be exact. Flesh eating, diseased reanimated corpse that we all once loved. Ellie and Scott barely escaped with their lives before meeting the group which she was somewhat thankful for but even though she is thankful for them showing up when they did she was still wary of them since she knew nothing about any of them.
Shifting slightly she looked over to the door which had been boarded shut with the spare nails and pieces of the wood that belonged to the bed frame in the next room. Low growls and shuffling foot steps could be heard from outside the door in the hall which made Ellie gulp and go silent like the rest of the group. Everyone there tried their best to stay as silent as they could only speaking in whispers. Lucky for them the electricity was still running but only because there was nobody left to turn it off. Ellie stood up carefully making sure she didn't make any noise and made her way carefully to the kitchen stepping over the leg of a man that sat on the floor against the wall.
She opened the fridge and took out a bottle of water that had her name written with marker on the side of it. Upon arriving at the apartment all that was left to scavenge was a pack of 24 water bottles and a rather big can of beans. The woman who appeared to lead the group had divided the share of water everyone getting four bottles and having their names written on it. Even though it was night time the summer heat still reached inside the apartment, small sweat beads rolling down Ellie's neck and forehead as she gulped down the ice cold water. She didn't finish the bottle only half way before she pulled it away from her lips and walked back into what was once called the living room which was now covered in dirt with books, clothes and all sorts of things littering the floor. Stopping, Ellie looked over at the leader who was staring out the dark window into complete darkness.
She slowly made her way over to her watching where she stepped making sure she didn't trip over something. " Bradley, what do we do when the sun comes up? we can't stay here for long.." Ellie whispered holding the cold water bottle onto her neck her eyes locking on Bradley's.
Scott sat there, still trying to contemplate his new reality. It's been two weeks since the outbreak and he could still remember when him and his sister were just tossing the baseball back and forth in the back yard. Then out of nowhere the memories of waking up to his sisters terrifying scream that made him jump, grabbing his baseball bat and rushing over to her room to see his parents...disfigured, growling with a blood lust in their eyes. His sister pinned up against the wall with a baseball bat that held her parents only two inches away from her. He could remember calling out to his parents and not get a response, only to have them turn to him instead. Scott quickly buried his face more into his arms tears threatening to escape his eyes.
After a few minutes Scott calmed down and lifted his head resting it on top of his knees watching his sister make her way over to the kitchen. He was glad that they survived, that his sister was here with him because he knew if it wasn't for her he would be dead right now or worse... one of them. Letting out a small sigh Scott began to look around. He didn't really look around the apartment when they came in, he just sat on the floor by the couch huddled up. His gaze traveled from his sister whispering to Bradley to a young guy with hazel eyes. He looks like a one of those young doctors or someone with an important job maybe? Scott thought to himself as his gaze shifted to a scruffy older looking man.
He tilted his head slightly observing the man. He had both his ears pierced and seemed to look rather rattled but who wasn't. Everyone here looked nervous, scared and tired. Sighing Scott stopped observing his surroundings his headache from earlier returning. His eyes were heavy but the sound of growling kept him awake, he was afraid that the walkers would somehow break through the door while he was asleep and get him. The boy tried his hardest to stay awake but it was just not working, climbing up onto the couch quietly he laid down and closed his eyes soon falling into a deep sleep.
Moira kept a steady gaze on the darkness just beyond the apartments window, seeing out there shapes looming in the streets below. She didn't want to think about what those shapes belonged to. Whose lives had been lost to them either. She was sweating profusely, and the quick hammering of her heart echoed around her skull. Every one of her nerves felt as if they were on fire. But on the outside she stayed calm and steady, not allowing the shakes to be seen by the others. No, she needed now more than ever to be strong. Especially if she ever wanted to see her her family again - she was so sure that they had escaped. Any words otherwise would simply be blasphemy to her ears.
"Bradley, what do we do when the sun comes up? we can't stay here for long.." Moira doesn't lets herself flinch when Ellie addresses her. She could have almost forgotten the others were there with how quiet each of them had been. She shifts her legs from the awkward position she was sitting in and turned away from the window. Before answering she took a small sip out of her water bottle, barely enough to quench her thirst from the heat.
"We need to get out of here, that's for certain...." She pauses to cast her gaze about the room, "And the way I see it we have few choices on how."
"Option one, could try the door, see how many are out there and hope to god they don't gang up on us." She is not a fan of that option, and doubts the others would be either. "But, I think option two would be better, so as crazy as its going to sound hear me out on this." She motions to the window, as if that were explanation enough. "There is another window over there on that building, and I know it sounds risky but its better than going out the front door. The ledge on this window is wide enough that two people could stand on it if they were pressed against the wall, and the ledge on the other looks similar. If we could find something to lay across to the other side we could get out that way."
Of course there were problems to this plan. There was no way to tell if there were any of those things in the other building or if they could even find anything to lay across. Jumping was also definitely not an option in this case since any one of them could end up dead on the ground below. Moira felt the floor beneath her creak, its low growl reminding her of the Walkers laying in wait outside.
Sarah clutched her backpack to her chest as she leaned against the wall, her fingers laced together to keep her hands from shaking. A loud noise from outside startled her, causing her jerk and let out a whimper. She guessed that a Walker had knocked something over, a trashcan perhaps, and looked around to see if anyone had noticed her temporary show of fear. Luckily, no one was focused on her, they were too busy worrying about the Walkers, and her embarrassment faded.
“We’d need to have the power of a small army to barrel our way through Walkers,” she said, responding to Bradley. “We’d be overwhelmed for sure. Hopping windows doesn’t sound like a much better idea, but it’s not impossible.”
She walked over to the refrigerator, took out her four water bottles, and put them in her backpack. From the sounds of the Walkers in the hallway, they didn’t have very much time before they would have to make a run for it, and warm water was better than no water.
Sarah turned around to face the others in the room. Obviously they looked just as miserable as she was, which made her feel worse. There were all stuck in a hopeless situation that they would likely never get out of. Picking up her backpack and slinging it over shoulder, she walked over to the window where Bradley and two others- she couldn’t quite remember their names- were standing.
'Don't cry, you have to move on,' he thought to himself, his jaw set in a determined line. 'You have a sister who is waiting for you, and you have to find her.'
Voices dragged his mind away to the real world, though their words did not seem to register in until a moment later. He listened to Bradley's explanation of the their situation and first option intently. When she gestured towards the window he understood immediately and gave a quiet snort of amusement before she could explain.
'This is going to interesting to see,' he thought to himself as he began to guess the different reactions of the others. The one he imagined would be most against it was the older man with the Irish accent on the opposite side of the table to himself, whose name eluded him.
"There is another window over there on that building, and I know it sounds risky but its better than going out the front door. The ledge on this window is wide enough that two people could stand on it if they were pressed against the wall, and the ledge on the other looks similar. If we could find something to lay across to the other side we could get out that way."
For a second, Jonathan thought he saw looks of doubt on their faces, but he didn't think about figuring out if he was right. Bradley had come up with a decent plan, and right now probably their best one. Before anyone could shoot it down, he had to give his support for the plan. As he opened his mouth and drew in some air to speak, another voice beat him to the punch.
“We’d need to have the power of a small army to barrel our way through Walkers. We’d be overwhelmed for sure. Hopping windows doesn't sound like a much better idea, but it’s not impossible.” He smiled slightly at her, then, for one of the first times since arriving, spoke to the group.
"I agree," Jonathan spoke, his southern accent coming through his deep, husky voice, "it's crazy, but it's a good plan." With a little effort from his weary muscles, Jonathan pushed himself up into a standing position, but let himself slouch a little. Being that tall has its disadvantages sometimes. He put away the sandpaper into his bag, double checking it was closed securely after subtly making sure his gun was still wrapped up inside, and grabbed his weapon. Until he was sure he could trust the group he was wary about revealing too much, especially that he had a handgun in his bag. He was almost out of ammo anyway.
Making his way to the window slowly to join the others, he took a quick glance outside at how far the drop was. There would be a chance they could survive, but he didn't feel like testing. His eyes fell on Bradley.
"When do we start?"
" Yes your right you two, it does sound crazy but right now...it's our best chance out of here." Said Ellie as she gave a small nod in agreement her arms crossed. Ellie's gaze moved from Jonathan to Bradley and from her to the window. She squinted her eyes observing the opposite ledge thinking. After a few minutes of silence Ellie looked back over to Bradley " I think I know how to get across, it may work but I don't know." With that Ellie turned to her brother Scott. " Yo, Scotty follow me." Scott raised his head looking up at his sister and sighed as he got onto his feet. He brushed the dust and dirt off his pants but knowing there was no use for that since they will most likely get dirty again later. The two siblings disappeared into the ransacked bedroom, mumbling noises being heard from inside before they both come out holding a large piece of the bed frame they used to board up the door earlier.
Ellie held her end while Scott also easily held his end despite the board being pretty heavy. They set the board down beside the window carefully as Ellie looked up at Bradley questioningly." Do you think this will do?". Scott on the other hand rubbed the back of his head as he let out another sigh. " It might work but there is still a few more hours until day light and we are practically blind in the dark so I suggest we wait until sunrise," He turned to look at the others as he continues. " Right guys?" Scott didn't know if the others would agree but he was sure confident in his suggestion. " Plus the extra hours till sun rise we can spend gathering anything we can that is useful from this place don't you think?" He added on as he then turned to Bradley looking at her confidently.

"As soon as we can," Moira tells Jonathan, glad that her plan isn't so easily dismissed. She didn't particularly feel up to taking her chances going through the front. With the sounds out there she figures there are more than just a few Walkers milling about.
" I think I know how to get across, it may work but I don't know." Moira watches as the two younger members of the group go off and return with a board from the bedroom. From what she notices it looks heavy, and should be durable enough to take their weight. Though she doesn't exactly trust it either - its all they have. " Do you think this will do?" Ellie asks. Moira takes a moment to lightly tap the board with her knuckles and lifting it with one hand.
"It seems sturdy enough, it should work." Moira answers.
" It might work but there is still a few more hours until day light and we are practically blind in the dark so I suggest we wait until sunrise," Moira felt antsy thinking about waiting, but knew that Scott was right. It would be too dangerous to try and get out with it being so dark outside and though she could see fairly well even in this light she doesn't want to take that kind of chance or risk the lives of the others in that kind of way." Plus the extra hours till sun rise we can spend gathering anything we can that is useful from this place don't you think?"
"Sunrise is the best time and we do need to gather as much as we can, good thinking Scott, we don't want to get caught in the dark and unaware.Everyone look for things we can use then anyone who needs rest get some now because we all need to be on our toes," Moira tells them, taking her time looking to everyone. She can feel a headache begin to form at the base of her skull. Moira is still worried about what they are going to do when and if they get out though. Where they are going to go and how they are going to get about going there. "Come on, lets clean up house." She feels a pang of sadness rush through her at the familiar saying. Its something she would tell her children when they made a mess and needed to clean it up. But she doesn't dwell on those thoughts. There are things that need to get done.
Sarah watched the siblings and thought about how nice it was that they had someone they could rely on no matter what. Her heart ached for that kind of companionship, but in these times trust was hard to come by. She knew she would have to rely on herself if she was going to survive, but she also knew that she wasn’t going to get out of here alive if she didn’t work with these people. For now she would have to trust them, and hope that they would lead her to a city full of people where she could once again blend in with the crowd.
Looking around, Sarah could find nothing of any use to her. She wasn’t much of a fighter. Sighing dejectedly, she started doing what she did best – organizing. She knelt down in front of bookcase and started arranging the books alphabetically. One book was so heavy she almost dropped it. Curious, she opened it, only to find it hollowed out. She picked up the semi-automatic that was inside, made sure the safety was on, and then stuck it in her jean’s pocket. Hopefully, since she didn’t have any training with a gun, she wouldn’t have to try to use it.
A few more books in their place later, Sarah felt a pain in her right index finger. Lifting it to her face to inspect it, she saw that it had been split open. Looking down, she saw a picture with broken glass and covered with her blood. She picked it up with her good hand and examined it. A couple staring lovingly at their baby. She smiled at the picture of the happy family who must have been the ones to live in the apartment.
Her smile quickly vanished and her mood plummeted. She set the picture on top of the bookcase and made her way over to her backpack. “I found a picture of the family that used to live here,” she said to no one in particular. “They’re probably dead now. Like we’re going to be soon. Do we even know where we’re going once we get out of here?” Grateful that her finger didn’t need stitches, she pulled her out her roll of gauze and clumsily tried to wrap her finger with her non-dominate hand. She knew she would feel bad about being so negative later, if there was a later, but right now she was in too sour a mood to care.
