Avery, Minnesota is barely a blip on a map. It's about as small as a small town could get with a population barely hovering over one thousand. There was something about it that kept mortals away; a genuine desolate creep factor. Yet, once one is able to pass the 'Welcome to Avery' sign, it turns into something magically beautiful. Too beautiful to be reality. It sprawled with forestry, long winding roads that led to homes settled upon large plots of land, was home to one of the most pristine lakes in the country, and was overshadowed by tall jagged mountains.

The Sawtooth Mountains have begun to be crowned in white snow, and the deep forest was painted in the golds, reds, and yellows of a mid-autumn month. The air was pleasant; crisp, yet not yet cold. Some might say it was perfect weather.

Jovani was out at the diner to enjoy a bit of coffee before work. He sat at the counter, his brown eyes flicking up at the television every once in a while. Even the supernatural enjoyed the guilty pleasures of Grey's Anatomy. "Honestly, we've been watching this show for years now. Hasn't she died yet?" Not that he cared. Too much.

The lady on the other side of the counter laughed. As one of Avery's oldest residents, Amarie Caster has known Jovani's pack since their Wild West days. She leaned toward him and pinned her elbows on the hard surface, "Trust me, honey, I am with ya on that one."

She leaned in further, almost as if she had a secret meant to be shared only with him. Amarie always had something to say given that everyone in town dropped by the diner all day and night. "The Bussard kids are returning. Did you hear?" Once she parted ways with the information, she straightened herself up and went back to drying dishes.

No, actually - he hadn't heard of their return. No one's heard from the Bussard children in many years. For all that they knew, they were out living their best lives in some city somewhere. Anywhere that wasn't Avery, at least. He didn't find himself particularly surprised by the notion that they'd come, however. Their parents did pass away only a few days ago. Humans had to mourn their dead. "I'm sure everything will be okay. They'll come, hold a funeral, and leave."

Amarie's head tilted from side to side, "I don't know, Jovani. I've just got... a bad feeling about everything. Ya know? Like... something ain't right here. I'm not the only one who's concerned."

No, she wasn't - about many things. Jovani sighed, finished his coffee, and placed a couple of bucks down next to the empty mug to cover his bill and some change. He walked out of the diner and tucked his hands into the pockets of his blue jeans.

He walked for some time until he eventually found himself standing in the middle of the street peering out into the distance at the Bussard home. While distant, it was large and ominous in how it seemed to just sit there quietly. For decades, it was always just like that. Like some sort of art piece or something. He didn't know. None of the Supernaturals visited the Bussards at their estate, but they did see the children at school when they were younger. Jovani had aged along with them, of course, until reaching a certain mature point where the process ceased.

He grew up with the Bussard kids, but they were not best friends. Tristan was an asshole, for one. He never fit in anywhere, even when some of the girls tried to flirt with him. He didn't have time for anyone, and he just didn't care. He left Avery as soon as he graduated high school, and it was probably for the best. Daphne was curious - always poking where she shouldn't be. If she hadn't left, she would have certainly gotten herself into a lot of trouble. She had always been pretty, though. At least Jovani always thought so. Part of him wondered what she looked like today.

Ah, but what was he doing just staring up at the Bussard estate? Right. Something was wrong. The deaths of Jarod and Maria were hugely suspect, and no one was cooperating. The town's mayor and council, as well as many other important figures, have urged Jovani to close the case. It was simple; natural deaths. While they did not often leave their home, they still had things delivered to them - supernaturals went in and out of the residence to tend to whatever matters they needed. There had never been any concern about old age or illness. In fact, word was that they were a healthy couple, which made the whole thing all that more suspicious.

Officially, he has dropped the case. There was nothing to formally investigate. But like so many others in town, the abruptness of it has left him wanting for more. The truth. He began the long walk toward the home of the Bussards, and when he arrived, he knocked on the door a couple of times. Either Tristan or Daphne had likely arrived; he just didn't know which one. He hoped for Tristan since he's less nosy.

Unfortunately for Jovani, Tristan was not at the Bussard home. He's at the 'Welcome to Avery' sign, grimacing at the thought that he had ended up here again. There was nothing for him in this wretched little town with its weird fucking people that seemed to defy certain laws of nature. This place creeped him the fuck out. There was nothing about Avery that was welcoming.

So what if his parents had died? Couldn't the town just hold a funeral and leave him the hell alone? Sure, he loved his family, but he didn't shed many tears over people that he hadn't spoken to in years. Not to mention that... something was always off about his family. There was just something fundamentally wrong about living here. His mother and father were weird, and that was likely underselling the truth. His sister had been the only normal one.

He finally decided to keep driving, even though he didn't want to. Even though this place made his spine twist and his skin crawl. For a man that's been to hell and back, almost quite literally, that's saying an awful lot about how much of an effect this place had on him. He blamed this town for his fucked up character. He blamed his parents for his and his sister's lonely lives. "Just sell the house and get the fuck out of here," he reminded himself, hoping that Daphne would prove to be unproblematic through this process. They both escaped this place, and as all know - small towns are hard to crawl out of.

The speed limit through most of the town was pretty slow, around 35 miles per hour, which was a real snore. The residents that were out on this fine early afternoon were as busy as always. He didn't know what they did, but people here had jobs and lives. There was a bank, school, cafe, diner, movie theatre, and more. Most people would consider small towns to be cozy, but this place was a nightmare. They stopped and stared as he passed through, but he did his best to ignore them and move along. The people here had always been so concerned about him and his sister. "Fucking creepy," he muttered, feeling like a fish in a glass bowl or something akin to that.

He drove partly up the path to the Bussard estate, but only because the paved road ended and there was nothing more but dirt. He didn't want to fuck his car up. He shut the car off, got out, grabbed a small suitcase with wheels and a handle, and got to walking. But something... something he couldn't put his finger on, caused him to divert from his original path. Which was great because he didn't want to see Jovani anyway. There was nothing wrong with him, but they just never could see eye-to-eye. It must be the competitive nature between them.

There was something about the trees near the lake that made him wonder. Like the rest of Avery, he found this part especially eerie. He could have sworn that he's seen strange phenomena out here, but his parents were opposed to their children playing in this area. Especially him. He wasn't mother nature's best friend or anything. He wasn't even a close ally. He once tossed a plastic bottle into the lake and was grounded for a week. A bit harsh, really.

He left his rolling suitcase on side of the winding dirt road and decided to go walk toward the edge of the lake. He sighed and looked past the dark waters and into the woods. He shuddered noticeably, "Just sell the house. That's it. We will be done with this place forever."

Daphne hadnā€™t known what to expect coming home, but seeing the place almost exactly how it was when sheā€™d left it had filled her with emotions she wasnā€™t ready for. Sheā€™d done her crying, and a certain numbness had set in. Sheā€™d quickly begun searching for any important documents or keepsakes theyā€™d want to hold onto. Old photographs, jewelry, that sort of thing. It was really just her and Tristan, and she doubted heā€™d care much about most of it, but if it were her sheā€™d be angry if he didnā€™t at least give her the option.

A lot of emotions had come bubbling to the surface, both about this home and the town. Theyā€™d practically not been allowed to have friends or fun, and being removed from it all was more depressing than when sheā€™d been in the middle of it. The town had been the same as she remembered it, as was the lake and the woods around the house. Daphne sighed, this place had been home for so long. She had to wonder why her parents insisted that she or Tristan stay here. There was no way he would agree to that.

Leafing through some papers, Daphne caught sight of her motherā€™s handwriting and let out a sob. She was alone, so she didnā€™t bother trying to stifle or soften it, instead letting herself feel the depth of the emotions rolling over it. It was so surreal, still, knowing that her parents were truly gone. She hadnā€™t seen them in so long, and regret started to grow like a weed in her chest- she had been hoping to visit for Christmas this year. Should have come sooner. The knowledge that sheā€™d never see them again was finally settling in now that she was among their things.

Sheā€™d heard once that you can sometimes feel a personā€™s presence among their belongings after they passed. Sheā€™d never believed it, but she believed it less than ever now. It was just lonely and quiet. Maybe she could open a window, at least then she could hear the birds. Music didnā€™t feel right, not given the circumstances, but she got up out of the chair at the kitchen table, and made her way to the window. Glancing out at the water, a part of her could appreciate why her parents had stayed here. It really was a beautiful sight.

Sheā€™d no sooner pried the window open when she heard a knock at the front door. Was Tristan here? Heā€™d probably just walk in, unless heā€™d lost his key or something. Mom and Dad had insisted they keep copies in case anything happened, Daphne just never expected either of them would need to use them. She opened the door and saw someone she hadn't expected. A blank look crossed her face as the gears in her head turned, trying to put a name to the face. ā€œJovani?ā€ She finally realized, ā€œGod, itā€™s been ages.ā€ She turned, looking over her shoulder to see the large stack of papers just barely hidden from Jovaniā€™s view by the door, ā€œIs there something I can do for you?ā€ She smiled sweetly, and vaguely realized that she probably looked like shit after her little crying session. Oh well, he knew her parents were dead. Canā€™t keep something like that a secret in this tiny ass town.

Shoeless feet crept silently through the brush, practically floating off the ground as Odessa flitted about and danced with the forest creatures. Things seemed different, now, with Maria and Jarod dead. It wasnā€™t right, and had disrupted something. Odessa was sure many of the people in Avery may disagree, but the forest spirits often disagreed with them on these matters. To them, the Bussards had been little more than a decoration on the edge of town; their house standing there like a silent sentinel, quietly observing and never interfering in their matters.

Odessa could often see that house right on the edge of her vision. It stretched just beyond her reach, and when she was younger she used to sit and observe it, and itā€™s occupants. Sheā€™d seen Jarod as a boy, and then seen him have children of his own. Sheā€™d never spoken with any of the family, but she almost felt a part of the family, herself.

As she wandered through the forest, just like every other day, she found herself wishing she could have a bit more. It could be dreadfully dull in Avery, especially out in the woods with little more than the books the librarians graciously left for the forest spirits to leaf through. Seemed a little ironic, sometimes, giving books to trees for entertainment.

She felt a disruption, and quickly used her magic to completely blend in with the trees. She spent a moment observing: it was the Bussard boy, all grown up. He hadnā€™t been back to town in years, but of course he would be returning. His parents had died, and humans needed to tend to their dead. She watched him for a time, blended perfectly with the trees around her. He was saying something about selling the house, and she had to wonder if he knew who could be buying it. Hopefully not someone who would destroy the forest nearby. Things like that werenā€™t something Odessa had ever learned, or had to think about, so after a moment she felt her curiosity get the better of her. If her mother were still around, sheā€™d have Odessaā€™s head for revealing herself to a mortal, but still she stepped out of the trees, materializing a few steps behind Tristan.

ā€œYouā€™re going to sell the house?ā€ She realized, then, that while she might be familiar with Tristan, he probably wouldnā€™t know her, and a blush crept across her cheeks, ā€œSorry, I just love it. Itā€™s so picturesque, sitting there on the lake. Donā€™t you think?ā€

Odessa had to wonder if heā€™d recognize her- sheā€™d been there in the background all of his life, but whether or not heā€™d paid enough attention to notice her was another story.
