There are times in each person's life where they feel like a stranger in their own skin. They don't understand or don't like the things happening around them and feel an overwhelming sense of unease, like this wasn't where they were meant to be. This feeling usually fades with the passage of time, but sometimes, this feeling is all too appropriate.

Among those alive today, there are people who are inconceivably lost. These people, called Drifters by some, have been transplanted from their own reality into another. The lucky among this group recognize most of the world around them, but to the others it is almost alien. All of these people however are changed, both emotionally and physically from their experience.

Drifters are outcasts of reality. Enraptured by a flurry of light, this occurrence transported them through the very fabric of space and time and dropped them in another universe. When they arrive, the first thing they feel is a panic, similar to treading water in the open ocean. Over time, their minds focus and they start to notice the changes. The people they confront more then once often don't recognize them. It almost seems like reality itself was unsure of how to handle their presence. If that wasn't enough, some Drifters find that they can actively "break" the rules of reality, manifesting what the general public would identify as superpowers.

A group of Drifters have taken residence in New York City. Some have been here for some time now, while others are just arriving, still confused from their "journey". While they are all trying to scrape whatever life they can for themselves in this unfamiliar place, there are people looking for them; people who are aware that they aren't quite as normal they seem.

  • Follow all RPG guidelines (no cybering, no spamming, etc.)
  • Reservations can be made in OOC. These last for three days and people CAN compete for roles. There is nothing wrong with some friendly competition (emphasis on friendly).
  • To prove you have read this far, please put your character's favorite color with your reservation.
  • FC's can be changed upon request, although I do reserve the right to ask you to pick another if I think it doesn't fit this RP.
  • Keep all drama IC, not OC.
  • Posts should be around 300-400 words long. If you are a little under or over these numbers sometimes, that is fine.
  • Not really a rule, but remember to proofread your posts before posting them. I can't count the times I've submitted posts at three in the morning and they were full of embarrassing mistakes. In that same spirit, a few grammar mistakes every now and again are fine.
  • Romance is encouraged, but don't have your character only talk to the object of their affection. It's fun to include everyone and I believe that is a key to making a roleplay last.
  • Speaking of which, when things get too "intimate", fade to black. However, this is an ADULT roleplay, so adult content will be discussed.
  • To prove you have read the rules, along with your reservation and the above color, tell me your favorite fictional location (Bat Cave, TARDIS, etc.). If these are missing, I will ignore your reservation
  • And, as always, have fun!

ImageThings were always changing around the city. Businesses opening and closing, people moving in and out of places, and buildings were rising and being demolished constantly. It was a good reminder for Julian that very little, if anything in life was constant. Everything always changed whether you wanted it to or not, so it was important to enjoy what you had while you had it. Some days, that meant the feel of a soft baseball cap on his head and others it meant the company of the only friend he had made since his arrival in this new world.

With this thought in mind and his backpack full of possessions, Julian decided to grab a bite to eat, then head over to his friend Rhoswen's place for a chat. As he walked through the crowded city streets, he noticed the time on a nearby storefront clock; 10:00 AM. Taking that into account, he figured that bagels and coffee would fit the void of his stomach nicely. So, he continued walking through the masses of people throughout the city until he saw a modest bagel place. He ducked inside and ordered three regular bagels and two small coffees. Julian knew even if the bagels didn't strike her fancy, the coffee would, as she had a bit of "thing" for anything with caffeine in it. It worried him sometimes, but he figured weening her off it slowly would be a lot easier then going cold turkey. And, even if the coffee didn't get her talking, how exactly he got the money to pay for them would most certainly make her wonder. With his treats in tow, he exited the shop and headed towards Rhoswen's apartment, whistling a happy tune while he walked.

When he arrived there after twenty minutes of walking, he opened the complex door and walked the various steps up to her floor. At this point, the process took almost no effort as he had walked these steps a thousand times before. After he hit the top of the steps, his eyes darted toward her door and his body quickly followed suit. Julian gave himself a once over and figured that he looked quite alright, all things considering. His white v-neck shirt was pristine with nary a stain to be found, his jeans followed a similar example with only a bit of a frayed edge to it's left leg, and his shoes were a simple black and white that he felt worked with everything else. With his mind now at ease, he gave the door a firm knock and waited for his friend to hopefully answer sometime soon.

How long had she been awake? A day? A week? An hour? One day slid into the next seamlessly. Nothing every changed. When Pascale moved to the city, she expected so much more. It was chaos breeding chaos and yet it was all the same shit she had left behind. Maybe it wasn't the city. Maybe it was her. Maybe she didn't care. With a flick of her wrist, she lit the cigarette hanging limply from her lips. A quick intake of breath and she released a puff of smoke that lingered in the air around her. Through the smoke, she saw a figure down the street. Her back slammed against the glass window of a deli. Behind her the cashier yelled at her unintelligibly. The cigarette sizzled at her feet. Cursing under her breath, she slid into the alley with a loud scrape of her heels.

Peering out, she watched the figure walk down the street, carrying bagels and coffee and whistling. He looked older than she had seen him last... and more alive. But it was him. The same build, the walk, the same damn whistle... But how? She watched him walk into an apartment complex and she broke into a run. A car honked, causing her stumble and nearly spill out of her heels. With a slam on the hood and a few choice words, she regained her balance and strutted off. She tried the door to the apartment complex but it was locked. "Shit," she snapped. She had to make sure but there was no telling how long he'd be there.

The clatter of Abbie's keyboard echoed through her apartment like a mouse scratching at the inner walls. She hadn't moved from her computer desk since she got home; working on a new presentation she has been assigned to put together for a new client. Some company moving to the city, a cafe chain or maybe it was a restaurant. It was all muddied by now only remembering that it was something that revolved around food. Plus the name. That name was going to be embedded in her head for the remainder of the year. Luckily enough the deadline was coming up and she would soon never have with to deal with this client again. That is if the presentation goes accordingly.

With the last of the coffee run dry, along with her patience Abbie emailed herself the progress she made and proceeded to the bedroom finding it best to catch at least some sleep before having to head out to start her day. In hindsight things would have probably gone a lot faster if she simply shut the television off. She was constantly getting distracted by random shows that kept coming on that drew her attention. Luck being as it may the moment she hit the plush comforter the very annoying and incredibly blaring beeps of her alarm clock went off like clockwork. Head buried in the pillow she let out a high pitch huff. Rolling to her side a beam of sun hit her in the eye clearly pointing out that the sun was indeed out and if the beeps had any say it meant that if she stayed laying there any longer there was no way she was getting to work.

Mustering up the remnants of her energy she started brewing another pot of coffee to give her that extra pep she needed to hopefully get through the day, well most of the day. Thereโ€™s no saying sheโ€™s not going to try to catch up on some sleep at some point though most likely during her lunch break. With her first sip she settled the cup down on the table and headed back to her room. One thing was for sure, her apartment was a mess. Piles of books and random art supplies stacked all across the place. Not to mention the amount of water bottles that was sprawled around the place. As Abbie started to her closest her foot caught on a pair of pants, one of many items of clothing strewn across the floor, falling face first into the wood floor. โ€œSeriously.โ€ She moaned as she picked herself up, continuing on grabbing her lazy wear; a pair of rolled up black sweat pants, an old pair of Vans slip-on's and a green button down shirt topped off with a no-care bun. With everything said and done she locked up her door, thermos full of coffee in hand and set out.

With a huff, she took a step back. It was just a door. It could be picked, forced, bypassed. It was just an obstacle. She took a breath and decided to be civil. The phantom could be nothing more than a vision, a delusion. She hadn't slept. She hadn't eaten. Her night was spent with a heavy beat in her head and smoke in her eyes. Maybe it was someone else. He was dead after all. She was at the funeral. She had seen the cold stare and the un-moving lips. Maybe it was wishful thinking. It had been so long ago. A whole other life...

Her hand settled on the door, as if feeling for his presence. It was cold to the touch. Was it worth it to try? As her thoughts washed over her and her doubts gnawed at the pit of her stomach, fear threatened to pull her under. But as it did, her default setting switched on. Danger was nothing to death. Her fist beat loudly against the door. "Is someone there? Let me in!" she shouted, "I... I lost my key!" Her fist fell away as her knuckles turned red. She turned to the intercom and began pressing buttons. "Hello? I lost my key, can someone let me in?"

When the door opened, Julian wasn't at all surprised by who he saw, but was delighted all the same. He let out a simple hey to answer his friend's hello as he entered the apartment. He was always surprised by how nice the place was. Sure, Rhowsen was a smart and capable woman, but she still was thrust into this foreign world, same as he was with nothing in terms of the material. Still, she provided for herself nicely, although not in the most healthy environment with someone with her disorder. As far as he knew, Julian was the only one who had been inside this place besides the landlord or the maintenance workers who repaired anything broken. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing however as he knew that for the most part, Roz could take care of herself and the only thing she needed was some company, which he was more then happy to provide.

It only took him a few moments to notice where her attention lied. The shattered pieces were in plain view on the kitchen floor. He felt a little guilty, figuring he startled her with his knock. However, his feeling of guilt quickly faded as a smile came across his face as he saw Rhoswen's wanting eyes as she starred at the coffee still in his hands.

"How about you take this and I'll handle the glass." he said, slowly handing her one of the Styrofoam cups and proceding towards the kitchen, placing his thing on the table and looking over the area for a broom.

"So, how are you feeling?" Julian began simply, his eyes still occupied by the search for the broom.

Rhoswenโ€™s eyes light up like that of a child on Christmas morning as sheโ€™s handed the cup, her attention shifting briefly to the man whoโ€™d bestowed her with coffee. Her smile was the embodiment of gratitude, blinding in its unbridled exhilaration. With one sip all her anxieties are forgotten, her nerves satiated by the hot, caffeinated beverage. As Julian excuses himself to the other room, Rhoswen turns so her gaze can follow. It never ceases to amaze her how tangible he appears, how anything in her reality will conform to his actions. This coffee shouldnโ€™t exist, but she can feel the heat of it in her hands. He shouldnโ€™t be able to touch the broom, but itโ€™s there when she hands it to him after she retrieves it from beside the refrigerator. โ€œIโ€™m alright,โ€ she replies, just as simply, her smile softening in the wake of concern, โ€œDid you sleep well?โ€ It was about a dozen questions in one, most sheโ€™d never bring herself to say. Julian not having a bed to call his own brought more grief than it should in light of the circumstances. Nevertheless her heart never ceased to ache whenever she thought of her friend sleeping out on the streets.

"I slept alright. I stayed at a shelter yesterday. Usually, not my thing, but it wasn't so bad." Julian stated as he brushed the pieces of the cup into the broom's dust pan. It was always an odd feeling when Rhoswen would look at him. Most times it felt like she was studying him more then anything else, but it was always accompanied by a feeling of undeniable warmth. Maybe it was because it was nice to not be in another strange place for once, but Julian knew deep down it was something else.

As he poured the dust pan's contents into the trash bin, the falling pieces reminded him of something he had just learned. "Actually, I have something to show you." he said, putting the broom back where Roz grabbed it and sitting down at the kitchen table, motioning for his friend to join him. When she did, he retrieved his bag and pulled a single light bulb from it."I got bored at the library one day and one of the lamps went out. That gave me the idea." Julian explained as he lifted the bulb to Rhoswen's eye level so she could see what happened next. The bulb seemed normal at first, but soon after, his hand began to spark with electricity. This subsided quickly however as the charge in his hand went into the bulb, setting it alight. "So, what do you think?" he asked, honestly unaware of his friend's opinion of his new trick. He hadn't shown his abilities off much since he received them, but Rhoswen was at least aware of what he could do.

Taking another sip of her coffee to conceal her frown, Rhoswen chases her guilt away with indulging in his company. Julian wasn't on the streets now, he was in her apartment. Here heโ€™ll be safe and warm and โ€” if heโ€™ll permit it โ€” fed. As Julian is reminded of something, claiming to have something to show her, Rhoswen is spurned from her momentary solace. Curiosity curried her attention, willing her to follow as he beckoned her to sit with him. She watches with vigilance, her doe eyes widening in awe as sparks crackle off his skin. At first sheโ€™s concerned heโ€™s hurt but one double take has her believing otherwise. Sheโ€™s just looked back when the light bulb suddenly shines, glowing without an outlet right before her eyes. Rhoswenโ€™s lips part in a reverent smile and, slowly, she reaches out to touch. Itโ€™s warm, giving off the same heat it would had the bulb been screwed into a lamp.

โ€œโ€œItโ€™s amazing,โ€ she says on a breath, flitting her gaze to capture his own. Rhoswen considered it nothing short of an honor to be shone what he can do, her own ability no secret to her companion. For a moment she plays with him, taking the bulb out of his hand and putting it back in just to watch to bulb turn on and off. She beseeches him for more and, when the coffee is finished, they retire to the living room where they sit side by side on the sofa and watch television. Itโ€™s no more out of the norm than his arrival and yet itโ€™s something sheโ€™ll never get accustomed to. Still, she leans into Julian, reassured by his presence now that she is no longer alone.

After a few threats and an angry exchange between an old woman and her Yorkie through an open window, Pascale stopped. With a step backwards, her heel caught in the crack of the sidewalk. She stumbled off the steps, cursing under her breath. Pascale turned away from the building, pulling a cigarette and a lighter from her purse. With a couple flicks of her wrist, she gently nursed the flame as it bit at her cigarette. She watched the world go by her on the sidewalk. It was nearly noon and lifetimes were lived right in front of her. A baby began to cry in its mother's arms as she nursed her coffee. Two children in starched uniforms ran away from their nanny. A young girl collapsed behind a dumpster in an alley with a needle in her hand. A woman screamed out of a window, throwing clothes onto a man on the sidewalk. An old man kept fumbling up the first step, never quite reaching the mark. Pascale hadn't seen a bed in nearly 24 hours.

Maybe she was seeing things. Maybe it was futile. How could she even be sure? For all she knew, she was chasing a stranger. At worst, she was chasing a ghost. She turned back to the apartment building, looking at each window for a spark of familiarity. With a sigh, the years peeled away and she was a child again. Danny was next to her, taller but non-assuming. She was in an empty classroom, digging through a teacher's desk. "No one will find out. The permanent record is a myth," She was full of revolutionary ideas like that but Danny was convinced. "They'll know. Someone will be watching for us," he insisted. She rolled her eyes and turned to the chalkboard. "No, we'll be watching them," she said and took a piece of chalk. She draw an eye on the center of the board and Danny laughed. "They'll still catch us," he said. They didn't. It was Pascale that was sent to detention. But as she sat by the window, head leaning on her arms, she saw Danny draw a large eye on the window, just for her.

She snuffed the cigarette stub beneath her foot and pulled out a tube of lipstick. She twisted the top of We have to talk and draw a large eye above the intercom. If it was Danny, he'd recognize it and maybe he'd seek her out. Pascale reapplied the shade to her lips and decided to head home, wherever that was. Some rest would clear her head.
