She thought she moved on, until one day, a doctor calls, telling her that he was hurt, he can't remember anything before the fighting, and suffers from PTSD and she's his only emergency contact. She of course, lets him stay with her while he recovers, but it won't be easy, especially when he can't remember her and she remembers everything about him.

Maddie's reaction looked almost nervous when he asked her for the towel. "Uh, Sorry, I totally forgot to grab it, I--uh---I think I can find something". Without really looking him in the eye she scuffled past him. Josh thought about what could have had her distraught. He looked down and knew he had found the answer immediately. Of course it must have been the many scars that now graced his body. There were many little cuts and bruises, scratches and of course the stitches of his stomach wound were still very visible.

Not for the first time he wondered if all those wounds were from the same explosion as his memory loss. The doctors claimed it was, but for Josh it was strange to fin that some wounds were far closer to completely being healed than others. Like the wounds were created at different times or even different dates. He was distracted from these thoughts when Maddie came back into the room. When she gave him the clothes she again barely looked at him. Oh, I feel like such a git for making her uncomfortable with all these marks... He took the clothes and took them back to his room to put them on. No need to make her any more uncomfortable than she already is.

In the room he looked at the clothes she had given him. The flannel pants were not really for him, but it fit, which was the most important thing for now. He looked at the shirt she had given him too. Strange... he thought as he looked at the band name. For some reason he knew the songs of the band, with no lack of detail. But on the other hand he felt he didn't like there music that much. If Josh hadn't been a fan, why would he know all the lyrics?

He put on the shirt and it was just a bit smaller than needed, but he could still easily wear it. It clearly wasn't Maddie's shirt as it would have been way too big for her. He wondered if it belonged to an old boyfriend and he felt a pang of jealousy that he wouldn't have expected. Wasn't it Josh that advised her to go on with her life? He decided not to ask her about it. It is only the first day, no time for unpleasant conversations.

When he came back into the room he noticed Maddie coming in just behind him. "Um, so what do you want to do now?" she asked him. He slowly scratched his head, deep in thought. In fact he had no idea, what did he used to do for fun. In hospital he would have probably watched TV or simply fallen asleep, the medication had been quite heavy. "I'm not sure what I usually do for fun... I thought we could just talk a bit." He sat his butt down on the couch and started with his first question. "S..., I understand that we lived here when we were young. How is the town? Do we like it here? Do we like the people and do thy like us? You know, normal things to learn..." He looked expectantly at Maddie for the answers. "Oh and before I forget. I know the doctor must have told you I must take it easy, but I can't just sit here. Is there anything I can do? Any place for me to help out?" He thought the second group of questions was even more important. He felt antsy already from doing nothing while recovering. In addition he didn't just want to munch of Maddie, he needed to make his contribution.

"I'm not sure what I usually do for fun... I thought we could just talk a bit. He said and Maddie scooted over for him to sit comfortably. "S..., I understand that we lived here when we were young. How is the town? Do we like it here? Do we like the people and do thy like us? You know, normal things to learn..." he asked and Maddie smiled. "Yea, we like it here." She said, before my thoughts drifted for a moment. She remembered how they use to talk about moving to the big city, the nightlife, the hustle and bustle, she tried that once, and it did not end well. She liked it here, alot more then she used to. "Oh and before I forget. I know the doctor must have told you I must take it easy, but I can't just sit here. Is there anything I can do? Any place for me to help out?" He said and Maddie chuckled. "You really should be resting, but if you want to help out, I could use a bit of help in the clinic, filling water bowls, and food, that sort of thing, but I don't really want you exerting yourself, you have to recover that's the important thing." She said
"But to answer your question ,yea, it's nice here, the people are nice, if not a little nosy, those that knows us, loves us and-" She chuckled. "We were never just Josh or Maddie, they had a habit of running our names together Josh'n'Maddie, or Josh-Maddie, it was so weird. They just knew we'd--" She stopped herself but before she knew it, she was crying. She clamped her hand over her mouth, to muffle the sobs " Dammit, I'm sorry, I thought---I thought I could talk about this stuff without....but they just keep coming.." She said as tears streamed own her face, even though she laughed, albeit humorlessly. She sniffed and managed to pull it together enough that she reached out and touched his hand. "Don't be afraid to ask me anything, please, It's not fair to you." She said, her fingers gripping his hand. "I know I keep doing this shit, but if you want to know anything at all, anything, I don't care what, ask me and I'll tell you, no matter how awkward or hard it might seem, okay? I'll stop crying eventually." She said and gave him a smile, though her brown eyes were still glossy with tears.

Maddie replied endearingly to his question. Like a proper caregiver she of course told him to recover rather than exerting himself. Although he wouldn't admit to it now, he would probably not follow it. He was already cooped up inside the hospital for too long. Now that he was finally out, he couldn't just stay in the house. He could help in the clinic, go out for a walk and in some time he could play some sports.

Maddie continued to answer his questions. Josh still found it strange that he didn't remember her, even though they used to be such an item. If their names were put together automatically by most of the people they knew, it must have been something meaningful. "They just knew we'd--" she stopped suddenly on a high note. Josh could see the water welling up in her eyes, she slowly started sobbing. He felt guilt pains in his stomach as he finished her sentance in his head, end up together. For the first time he realized that the break up must have been difficult for them both, it still seemed so fresh to her. What made him feel even worse was that he could not remember feeling the same pain. The tears kept on coming and running down her face. "Ask me and I'll tell you, no matter how awkward or hard it might seem, okay? I'll stop crying eventually."

She had gripped his hand tightly and he held on to hers. Then slowly he leaned in and put his arms around her in order to console her. He held her while he felt the tears dripping on his shoulders. He held his hand between her shoulderblades and rubbed up and down. After a minute they broke it up. He shuffled back a bit to give them each some room. "I think we both need a bit of time to get used to this. You aren't able to give all the answers right away, and I am not able to be the same guy right away." He took a deep breath before continuing. "I will try not to ask questions that are not relevant to our current situation. That should leave some room for self exploration, right?" In this way he could find his own way of being Josh, without trying to copy Josh."There is one thing that does spring to mind though, I don't want to have the same conversation I had with Sadie with 1200 more people. Do you have any suggestions, flyers, town meeting, local commercial adds?" There has to be a way to let people know about his situation without telling everyone personally.

It was then that, Josh leaned in, putting his arms around her and Maddie melted into him, it was as if the levies broke and she just let it all out, silent were her tears, as his hand brushed between her shoulder blades. She remembered being held like this when her father died, he'd been sick and finally cancer took him. She was in her 9th year that year, and Josh his 10th, he held her just like this, until she fell asleep.

After a moment or two, she slowly moved away, wiping her face with a hand, while he shuffled back some. "I think we both need a bit of time to get used to this. You aren't able to give all the answers right away, and I am not able to be the same guy right away." He said, and while she wanted to say so, he wasn't wrong. She could, but there was no way she could without crying. No matter how hard she tried. It hurt her when he left, bad, and now that he was back, a shadow of what he was, a remenant, it was hard. She stayed quiet. . "I will try not to ask questions that are not relevant to our current situation. That should leave some room for self exploration, right?" He said and she looked at him. No that wasn't what he was here for. He was here for all of the important memories the one they made together but he wanted to explore, find himself, and she wasn't going to get in the way of that, so she nodded, solemnly.

."There is one thing that does spring to mind though, I don't want to have the same conversation I had with Sadie with 1200 more people. Do you have any suggestions, flyers, town meeting, local commercial adds?"

Maddie chuckled. "Oh no, I'm not about to put you up on a flyer, or stand you in front of people, to tell them that." She said, with a scoff and a sniff. "Besides, This is Sadie, she'll mean well, but give it a day or two and everyone will know. It's that small of a town." She said and ran her hand through her dark curls before looking at him.

"That shirt....it was yours....You hated Fall out Boy, but I loved them so you took me because I begged and begged." She said with a light laugh. " I was spoiled." She said and sighed. Boy was she, she thought they'd be together for ever, she really did.

"What?!?! You wouldn't like my head on a flyer. There are so many things you can do with that. We can put them on lamp posts, or wear Josh suits while we pass out the flyers." He paused before continuing on a more serious note. "Well, I hope you're correct about Sadie. It would be nice if everyone just knew. Maybe I'll test the theory on a little walk tomorrow." Maddie went on to tell him about his shirt. Maybe it was strange, but he could totally see himself caving in against Maddie's requests. "I was spoiled" she said softly.

Josh could see her smile. It was good to see that their history hadn't been tears alone. Josh was feeling confident they would be fine in a week or two. He leaned back in the cushions a bit, feeling more relaxed. "I don't know why that is such a relief. I thought the shirt might have belonged to an ex or something. Well, I guess it was..., right?" He didn't know if he should have made that comment. Maybe it was a bit early to bring up exes. Especially since he couldn't remember any of his, it really wouldn't be fair to make her the only one with a past. Even though I am curious...

"If I am correct, I do know how to drive. I actually don't know about a license, but the act itself is all in my head. If you would like I can drive your car back tomorrow. It wouldn't be fair for you to give up your lunch hour. And then I can also get my clothes...I guess I can't wear this shirt forever." He only realized now that his shirt had been with Maddie for all these years. She hadn't thrown it away, she hadn't burned it and she hadn't ripped it to shreds. He, of course, couldn't be sure, but some girls might have reacted in those ways after a break up. Secondly, there might be more stuff here that belonged to him. Should I ask for it... He decided not to. They were having a good time at the moment and he didn't want to mess that up.

Even though it couldn't nearly be that late yet, Josh couldn't suppress the yawn he felt coming up. He didn't know if it was his body stiffening, stretching or just coincidence, but he felt his stomach scar burning. He would have to take his painkillers now and those would make him even sleepier than he already was. "Maddie, I hope you don't mind, but I think I need to go to sleep. It was short, but quite an eventful day."

"I don't know why that is such a relief. I thought the shirt might have belonged to an ex or something. Well, I guess it was..., right?"

To that, Maddie chuckled, she hadn't expected herself too and perhaps if it wasn't him, she wouldn't have.

"If I am correct, I do know how to drive. I actually don't know about a license, but the act itself is all in my head. If you would like I can drive your car back tomorrow. It wouldn't be fair for you to give up your lunch hour. And then I can also get my clothes...I guess I can't wear this shirt forever." He said and Maddie pursed her lips. "I'll ask you're doctor, see if that's okay with your meds, if he says yes, then totally." She said, resting her chin on the arm that was leaning on the back of the couch.

"Maddie, I hope you don't mind, but I think I need to go to sleep. It was short, but quite an eventful day." He said and she smiled. "I'm tired too." She told him, her eyes were heavy from crying and her head felt full.

"Do you need your meds now?" She asked him. She had the foresight to put his meds in her purse, which she carried with her, and so that was in the house, unlike his clothes. She stood up, stretched and yawned. Honestly, if he weren't here, she'd crash on the couch and moved to the bed later since it was still early. She'd have to get use to not doing that. Alot of this was going to take some getting used to.

"Yes, please do check with the doctor first. It would be a shame if the first thing I do afer coming back is crashing a car, or killing an old lady... Although, also a way to let people know that I am back. Bad publicity is still publicity." The medication he had was quite heavy, according to the doctor at least. He don't know if he ever created an accident yet, but he wasn't going to start now.

He was glad to hear that he wasn't the only tired one. He wasn't sure if she was the type to go to bed this early, he didn't think he normally was. "Yes, I'll take the meds now. I think the doctor prescribed it that way. And additionally I'm starting to feel the pain in my abdomin again.I am glad you thought of them." He got a glass from the kitchen and filled it with water. In total there were about 5 pills laid out for him. He took each of them with a big gulp of water.

He didn't really know how to say goodnight to Maddie. Did he give her a kiss on the cheek, did he give her a hug? Feeling a bit uncomfortable with the situation he ended up just lifting his hand as if he was waiving. "Good night, Maddie. Sweet dreams..." He walked into his room. Oh wow, waiving was probably the worst decision. Ah well, tomorrow, new day, new chances. He still had enough energy to take his shirt and pants off and put them over the chair in his room. After that, he just had enough energy to drag himself to bed and drop onto it. As the medication sinked in he felt the pain becoming less and his drowziness getting worse. He had no more time to even drag the sheets over him before he fell into a deep sleep. Good night world...

Maddie awoke from a dark dream. he was there, the gun to her head, telling her how he was going to kill her, and then himself. She awoke just as he pulled the trigger.

It was late in the evening about 3 am but since it was another work day, she had to get down to the clinic anyway in a few hours anyway. She made her way to the bathroom, and showered and brushed her teeth and was doing up her hair when suddenly it all came flooding back to her.

Josh, his accident, his memory loss, and -despite herself- the way he looked in that damned towel. She shot a glance over at the door that adjoined the bathroom. Josh was right on the other side.

Last night he'd only waved, not a hug, not a kiss, just waved. She shouldn't have expected much but still, it stung. She wanted to hug him, at least that, but no, not now anyway. She was still a stranger to him. At least he started calling her Maddie, it felt nice to hear that name on his lips.

Sending the thoughts of her nightmare to the back of her mind, she went back into her bedroom and changed, pulling her dark curls back into a half ponytail, dressed in a loose sweater, and a long skirt.

She made her way to the kitchen and began preparing breakfast for the two of them. How often did she imagine this life for them, a simple life, where she'd make him breakfast, or perhaps they'd take turns. She thought about going to wake him but thought better of it until she heard shuffling coming from the his bedroom.

There was something wrong with his eyes. It must have been around midday judging by the amount of light coming from the window. He just couldn't be sure. It didn't sting enough for sand in his eyes, but it might be a veil of some kind or after staring into a bright light. Last option could be exhaustion, where everything becomes blurry. There was complete silence around him. He wanted to walk around, see if he at least could here his own footsteps. However, it seemed he could not move at all. When he tried with all his might to move, he fell over onto the cold hard ground. It was a basement type floor, cemented. High in the sky he could see the window he wanted to look through, but he wouldn't be able to reach it. Then all of a sudden a noise, like there was activity in the room next to him. "Josh? You awake?"

With a sudden jolt Josh woke up to the sound of a voice. The floor he was laying on was not cement, but a soft carpet. And looking through the window he could see it was still dark outside. He didn't immediately realize who had called him and where he was. He stood up, carefully, trying not to make a sound. He felt the bed with his hand and noticed it was cold, he hadn't been in the bed for at least an hour. As a Marine the first thing he looked for was a weapon. Noticing there was no gun or knife in the room he took the pants on the chair that he could possibly use to choke his captor. He felt strange, in pain, and horribly confused. He had often heard the stories of POW's, but the room he was in didn't live up to the stories. It had an almost homey feeling to it.

With his improvised weapon in his hand he walked gently to the window. As soft as he could he opened it, hoping that there would be no squeaking of metal as he opened it. He was more or less successful in that, and he walked back to the entrance of the room to take place behind the door. He hoped his captor would come in, see the open window and walk towards it. In that case Josh would have the change to jump them from behind use his weapon and take any weapon that his captor might have. He kept quiet, and waited in full concentration on what would happen next.

Maddie set down the knife and the vegetables she'd been cutting, and made her way toward his room.

She knocked a few times, and then when he didn't answer, she opened the door slowly. Finding his window wide open. "Shit, Josh!" She called and ran to the window, peeking out and leaning over hoping -or not- to see him on the street below.
Image

Before she knew what happened though, there was a grip around her neck, and she couldn't breath. She struggled, stumbling back against whoever was strangling her, in the struggle she caught his reflection on the top part of the window.

"J--Josh....S-stop!" She choked out, feeling the world begin to spin, and heat raising to her face.
She was losing this fight, and it sent her back, back to Marcus, back to when he held the gun to her head. She whimpered, and fought harder but she could feel herself getting weaker and weaker.

"L--let....me....go..."She managed, before the world in her vision was growing dark.

Josh saw the door opening and someone walking through it. As he suspected they went straight for the window. In the dark he couldn't clearly see who the person was, but he had no problem estimating their height. He snug up behind the person and he put the pants he still had over the head around the neck and he pulled tight. He knew to hold the pants high in order to block the airways, but not the blood flow. He heard gasping and gargling and through the stumbling he could hear it was a woman who he was restraining.

"J--Josh....S-stop!" The words came out weak, in the middle of a gasp. She knew his name, how did she know? What else did she know? Another soft response came from the woman. "L--let....me....go..." she managed to get out. He put his elbows on her shoulders while still keeping the pants high up. It would stop her from trying to stand on her toes to delay the process. Another minute later the struggle was over. She hang weak and he let go of the pants. She fell down and he caught her in his arms. He dragged her to the bed that he had woken up next to. He put her down and saw her face clearly for the first time. Her face was neither familiar, nor seemed unfriendly. He was surprised how much he could be fooled by the enemy with a single glance at a beautiful face.

If it wasn't now, her collaborators would surely come look for her soon. He left her on the bed and stepped out of the door. As soon as he stepped out he realized he made a terrible mistake. He saw the breakfast preparations in the kitchen, the living room and the art on the walls. The warm cosy apartment brought back the memories of last night in flashes. He saw a flash of him and Maddie sitting on the couch. Them eating dinner, them driving and then he saw the hospital. He stumbled back a few steps, getting dizzy on top of the confusion. In his confusion he suddenly remembered Maddie and what he had just done. For someone that used to deal with stress so frequently it was strange he shot into a full on panic mode.

"Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit..." he walked up and down 3 steps at the time. He was scared to go back in the room, but he needed to make sure she was okay. He went into the still dark room and saw Maddie on the bed. He fell to his knees next to the bed and checked her pulse. It was still clearly there and after calming his own breathing down he could see her chest going up and down. She had been brought unconscious, but she was not in any more danger. At least not from anything else than him. "Maddie, please wake up. I am so sorry... I didn't mean to... I mean... I never wanted... I just didn't realize it was you." He held her hand in his left hand and he stroke her hair back with his other hand.

He realized what this meant. He had to go... He could not stay here and endanger her life, simply cause he didn't have it all together. He would never forgive himself if anything happened to her. This woman took him in, and this is how he repaid her? He wasn't sure, but he felt like tears were streaming down his face.

Maddie's eyes opened wide, and she sucked in a long ragged deep breath. She coughed hard, so hard it shook her chest. She managed to get her breathing, before looking around and finding a man at her side. She looked at him as if he were the unfamiliar one. Her head and throat ached, as she saw her hands in his.

She jerked away from him, crabwalking backward the bed, until her back hit the headboard, unsure what to make of all of this, before finally it all came back. He wasn't Marcus, he was Josh and Josh was sick.

Even still, he tried to kill her? Clearly he didn't meant to, there were tears in his eyes.

"J-Josh?" She asked tentatively, coughing a bit, as she spoke, her usually soft voice was hoarse and rough. She wanted to ask him if he was alright which was a weird thought after what just happened. She remembered, tears touching her eyes too as she looked at him.

She didn't know what to do. Too many times had she let a dangerous man into her life, a man she knew full well could kill her if he wanted and there wouldn't be a damn thing she could do about it.

But it was Josh? he would never hurt her.

But he just did. Or he had about an hour ago, she could see the sun coming up now.

She didn't know what to do but look on him in silent fear and confliction. She didn't know where to go from here.

She pulled her knees to her chin, her eyes still on his, maybe he should say something, she didn't know what to say, or how to feel, or what to do.

The moment Maddie woke up she backed away hastily, resulting in her hand leaving his. He felt a bit lost when they disconnected. "J-Josh?" She sounded doubtful, as if she wasn't sure it was him. As if there was another person sitting on the side of her bed. He saw the tears in her eyes reflecting his own. Does this mean she wants me gone? She didn't look like she was going to speak again. He wasn't sure if he should, wasn't sure if there was anything he could say to undo what he did.

"I...I'm sorry. I didn't know what was happening, who you were and where I was. I'm so sorry..." The one moment he didn't know if he should speak, the other he couldn't stop. She closed up even more by pulling her knees up. With body language you could hardly get more closed up than that. Once again Josh didn't know what to say or do, but the silence was killing him. He couldn't contain it anymore and abruptly he got up to his feet and walked out the room. Leaving the room he leaned against the nearest wall and sunk down to his knees. I need to talk... to someone...

He looked for Maddie's bag, she had left in the kitchen the night before. Rummaging through it he found everything, except for what he was looking for. Finally getting to her wallet he found the doctors business card inside. He dropped the wallet back in the bag and took the card to the phone in the living room. With the card shaking in his hand he dialled the number on it. With the phone in his hand he walked up and down in the living room. He grew angry and seemed more out of breath with each ring. Nobody picked up on the other side, it was probably to early. He hung up and sat down on the couch with his head in his hands. He looked at the card in desperation and turned it around. On the back there was a number written in blue pen.

He dialled the number and after three rings a woman picked up. "Hello, this is Josh Callahan calling for Dr Hennings." The lady replied somthing he didn't quite catch. But the other side went silent and a few seconds later a familiar male voice could be heard on the other side. Josh? This is Dr Hennings, are you okay? Josh was glad to hear the doctor on the other end. "Doctor? I did something terrible." Josh spoke hastily and unclear. "I woke up and I didn't know where I was. I thought I was captured, and I... I strangled Maddie..." He could here a gasp on the other side. Josh, is she okay? Is Maddie okay? Josh replied quickly. "Yes, yes, she just woke up. Her neck is a bit red, but she seems okay. But I can't stay here, doctor. I can't have her in danger, I... I couldn't live with myself." Josh heard the sigh of relief on the other end when the doctor learned Maddie was more or less okay. Josh, I need to speak to Maddie now. Please put her on. Josh was surprised at this. "But doctor, I need to get out of here, I need to have Maddie save." The doctor interrupted him. JOSH, do you feel like strangling Madeline now?
"Well, no.. but.." Again the doctor interrupted him. Okay, then put Madeline on the phone.

Josh took the phone to the bedroom and handed the phone to Maddie. "It's doctor Hennings. He wants to speak to you..." He held out the phone and only went back to the kitchen when she took it. He took out a glass and poured himself some water. What have I done?

Maddie sat back against the bed. The two of them in complete silence before Josh decided he should go. She didn't want him to. She really didn't but she didn't know what to do.Her throat hurt, her neck burned alittle. She'd be alright but what happens if he did it again. Would it be like Marcus, would he just snap if she did something he didn't like. If she said somethings he didn't like?

It was Josh? Wasn't it?

She heard him shuffling around outside the door and she swallowed when he entered. He came at her and she flinched, she didn't meant to but it happened. She watched him warily before looking down at his hand, holding her phone. "It's doctor Hennings. He wants to speak to you..." She looked up at him, and then gently took it, hoping not to seem afraid. Without another word, he left out again.

"Hello?" She could hear how hoarse she sounded.

"Maddie, are you okay?"

"Y-yea, a little shaken, but I'm okay."

"That's good. I'm sorry, this was a bad idea."

Maddie was silent. "I'll put him in the proper facility, I shouldn't have asked this of you, after what you've been through. I know of a place, it'll be really nice.--." Maddie thought about it as the doctor when on, , Josh in a home, with people who didn't know him, who didn't understand him, who didn't care. No he needed to be here. With someone who loved him.

"No." She said. "No, he needs to be here." She said and coughed. "Excuse me. He needs to be here, I just need to be careful, that's all."

"Madeline, I was wrong to ask this of you, I didn't think he was dangerous."

"Yea, he's dangerous but--" She paused. She said the same thing about Marcus after his first outburst, she always made excuses for him. Was she doing that now with Josh? No. It was Josh, she knew that. She knew he was in there and was just...scared or something. He was nothing like Marcus.

"I can't send him away, I can't, not in some home with people who don't know him, I mean think about it, he recognized me, he knows me and he did this, what do you think he'd do with people he really didn't know? That he never knew. Yes he's dangerous, but he's already here, and can't go anywhere else."

"Madeline, he's not safe. You're not safe."

"He knows me, look, if it happens again, then...Then we'll talk about this home thing, but we've already made some progress." That was a bold face lie, but she had to say something.

"Madeline, Pleas--Wait, Progress, what happened?"

Maddie paused. She wasn't a very good liar, but she had to think of something. "He remembered a band I used to like, It wasn't much but, he remembered." She said, and finally sitting down. "Really? Do you think he'll remember now?"

"I don't know, I can ask him." She pulled the phone from her face. " Josh, could you come here a second?" She called and when he came in. She smiled.

"The doctor wants to talk to you, You remembered something yesterday." She said, and pointed to her shirt, and rose her brows, hoping against hope that he remembered or even knew what the hell she was talking about. "can you tell him what that was." She said and closed her hand over the phone to muffle the sound. "Just answer the question and you might not have to leave." She said quietly. "Okay?" She said and offered him the phone

Josh drank his glass of water in one shot as if he was standing at the bar. He slammed the glass back on the counter a bit too hard. He was surprised it didn't break, although it hadn't been his intention. He just stood there, for some reason a little bit out breath. He needed to leave, he needed to get away from Maddie, get her out of danger. He wanted to tell Maddie he was gonna go back, but she was still on the phone. He didn't want to go in and listen into the conversation between her and the doctor. He understood the doctors request, of course he had to make sure Maddie was still conscious and more importantly, alive.

He walked up and own a bit trying to decide what to do when he heard Maddie's voice from the other room. "He remembered a band I used to like, It wasn't much but, he remembered." He was confused hearing it, had he remembered a band? He had remembered the fact he didn't like the band, but had he associated that with Maddie liking it? He didn't think so, but then her mind was better than his at the moment.

He was awakened from his thoughts by Maddie's still harsh voice: "Josh, could you come here a second?" Josh walked in a bit faster than he probably should have. Maddie was smiling, something that confused him even more. It wasn't the smiling situation, smiling was about the furthest from his mind right now. She handed him the phone while pointing at her shirt, "Just answer the question and you might not have to leave. Okay?" The comment confused him once again, it almost sounded as if she wanted him to stay. How could she want that after what just happened? He took over the phone and gave a quick smile back at her.

"Hello? Doctor...?" The doctor responded, which surprised Josh a bit. He had half expected for him not to be on the other end of the line any more. Hello again Josh. Madeline informed me you remembered something yesterday. Could you tell me what you remembered? Josh still didn't know what to say, but his lips started moving anyway. "I... I remembered one of her favorite bands. I remembered how I hated them, and then how much she liked them. I even took her to a concert." There was a bit of silence on the other side before the doctor started. Okay Josh, I hadn't expected a result this fast, so clearly you being together is helping. Madeline is willing to give it another try before we think about alternatives. Josh sighed audibly. "Doctor..., I just don't ... I want to make sure I don't hurt her again. I would never forgive myself." Josh could almost see the doctor nodding on the other side. You will need to create a safe space inside the apartment, and preferably your room. Make sure you have a night light, have a familiar scent in the room, hang up pictures of the two of you and of you and her alone, it would be best if you are smiling in these pictures. Josh was relieved to hear there was something he could do. "Thank you doctor, I will get right on that." No problem Josh. I wish you good luck, and please call me again if you need anything. And please tell Madeline the same goes for her.

Josh hang up and walked out of the room. He handed the phone to Maddie, without actually having a reason to do so. "We have to hang up pictures. And apparently I need a night light." He still felt uncomfortable talking to the woman he just strangled.

Maddie could hear Josh's side of the conversation. She didn't know if he'd make it sound convincing enough but he did and she blit her lip when he mentioned not wanting to hurt her again. That was reassuring in a strange way. She didn't want to think of him in anyway similar to her ex. Marcus wanted to hurt her, Josh did not.

Soon he walked out and handed her the phone, and she gave a small smile that didn't reach her eyes. She was still shaking, she hadn't noticed until she went to take the phone from him.

We have to hang up pictures. And apparently I need a night light." He told her, and she nodded. She noticed how he didn't seem all the comfortable and she couldn't blame him. He did just try to kill her, and it was worse because he didn't mean to.

"Okay, I still have some."She said, figuring he must have meant of them. She had a lot of them, actually. Throughout most of their lives actually. She'd gone through them once after she got out of the hospital, after Marcus did what he did. She'd missed him so much, that it actually hurt.

"If you want, we can go through them now." She offered, already moving toward her room, though she paused and turned to him. "Josh, I'm okay." She told him. "You won't let that happen again, I believe that; you don't want to hurt me, so you won't, and maybe these pictures will help but I really don't believe you'd let that happened again." She said, and moved toward him and gave him a hug, that was at first a little stiff, but, she relaxed shortly after, melting to him, making sure he felt she meant those words..

Even talking to her was strange again, there was this thing still in the air between them. It was just a few moments ago an Josh had the feeling it would take a lot longer for them to be okay about what happened. He saw that her hands were still shaking. And that is my fault...

"Okay, I still have some." she answered to his question. He hoped she meant pictures instead of nightlights, but he felt the tension was still too strong to make such a lame remark. Instead he just nodded to acknowledge what she sad. "If you want, we can go through them now." Before Josh could reply Maddie already walked to her room when she turned around. "I really don't believe you'd let that happened again." She finished. She walked up to him and hugged him. Both of them were trying to stay apart while hugging, Josh kept his hips to the side as if he wasn't fully into it. But Maddie held on, pursued and eventually Josh gave in and joined in the hug, that felt better than he dared say.

"Thank you for the offer, but I don't think we should go through them now. I mean... don't you have work today?" He remembered she had mentioned it the day before. "I can pick up my bag from your car, or the car itself. And I need to go hunt for a nightlight." He was actually looking forward to get into the fresh air, it would do him good. Maybe he would ook for a park to stay outside for a bit. Although he looked forward to it he felt a bit guilty that she had to work while he didn't. "Listen..., I must have some money on a bank somewhere. Do you have access to all of that? I don't want you to suffer financially as well." The question came from a strange corner after what happened that morning, but he found himself worrying about everything now.

He wanted to get ready to go outside, but didn't feel like showering. He did so the night before, so it wasn't really needed. He walke into his room to put on the same pants as the day before. Without his duffel bag, he didn't have much choice in clothes. He also kept on the band shirt he was wearing already. Not the most fashionable choice, but it will do. He came out of the room, pretty much ready to go. "I'm sorry, I don't want to look like I'm running away now. But I am sure you have enough to do before work without me getting in the way." All of a sudden he figured that it might not have been all that nice to say that she would have enough to o. He didn't want to implicate she needed a lot of work before going out. How can I save this quickly? "Wait, I know. I can make you some breakfast while you get ready. I can delay my outing by a few minutes. Do you like omelettes?"

He hoped he could make omelettes, he had no idea of his cooking skills, maybe the only thing he could make was garbage.

There was a small sense of relief when Josh finally relaxed into the hug. It eased a bit of the tension and Maddie herself could breath a little easier -no pun intended.

They broke away, but still close enough that Maddie could feel the heat from his body. "Thank you for the offer, but I don't think we should go through them now. I mean... don't you have work today?" He reminded her and she blinked. He was right but she was glad he remembered, that meant his short term wasn't completely lost contrary to what just happened. She was still processing this as he spoke again. "I can pick up my bag from your car, or the car itself. And I need to go hunt for a nightlight." He said and she just nodded. "Yea, I'll get you the keys." She said though she only looked over at the counter for her bag, it wasn't where she put it, but she figured he must have rummaged through it to find the doctor's card while she was still trying to breathe. Something seemed to cross his mind and she noted the guilt that creased his brow. "Listen..., I must have some money on a bank somewhere. Do you have access to all of that? I don't want you to suffer financially as well."

"I-I don't know, I'll have to check" She said, the idea of all of that was making her tired, maybe it was the lack of oxygen from being choked out, she didn't know but suddenly she was extremely tired, she didn't want to work today. She figured she'd just check on the animals, make sure they were feed, but she wouldn't open the clinic unless she got a call, which didn't happen all too often anyway. She then watched him shove off into his room and she felt a little jilted, like he was avoiding her now. Not that she blamed him, he did nearly choke her to death mere moments ago, or was it hours? She couldn't say, since now she was developing a headache.

She slowly found herself a seat at the counter and took a few breaths, and looked up only when he came out of the room, ready and rearing to go. "I'm sorry, I don't want to look like I'm running away now. But I am sure you have enough to do before work without me getting in the way." He said and while she merely shrugged as she held her head, he seemed to think he said something wrong by the small frown that touched his brow. "Wait, I know. I can make you some breakfast while you get ready. I can delay my outing by a few minutes. Do you like omelettes?" He said and Maddie straightened up, her eyes wide, ingoring the increasing pain in her head.

"You wanna make me an omelette?" She asked, her mouth slightly open in shock. She smiled, chuckling a little aghast.

"You--Josh...Ha," She chuckled softly, as she forced herself to stand which made her a little dizzy but she recovered well enough. "Josh, You used to make those for me whenever I was sick," She said with a smile as she looked at him. "It was the only thing you knew how to make without burning the kitchen down." She said, her eyes watering again, but this time she refused to let them fall. Instead, she rose a hand to her head, the headache worse and now she felt queasy. "Which is kind of funny because I--I don't feel so good." She said, and while she was still smiling, she tried to sit back down, only to somewhat miss and fall into the seat. "Whoa." She said, "I'm good, I'm good." She told him, figuring she was still feeling the effects of the choke. She thought she might had concussed but she couldn't be sure.

Josh laughed at her reaction. He had no idea when he suggested to make the omelette, they would have had a history regarding that. A smile appeared on his face and he walked to the fridge to see if their were any eggs in the house. He heard Maddie continuing to say she wasn't feeling well. He felt instantly guilty for her feeling bad. When he looked at her again he saw her falling into her seat and trying to keep herself stable. He felt like he should carry her inside and onto the couch, but after that morning he wasn't sure they were comfortable enough. Instead he put her arm over his shoulder and helped her into the living room and set her up on the couch. "Okay Maddie, just rest for a bit and your breakfast will be on its way." He turned on the small TV and walked back into the kitchen to start his magic.

There were quite a few eggs in the fridge, at least enough for the two of them. He put on the stove and put a piece of butter in the pan. He broke a few eggs mixed them together, threw in some salt and rosemary he found in the cupboard. When the butter has softened slightly he started frying some bacon. After 5 minutes he added his mixture and threw in some mushrooms and cheese for good measure. While the omelette was getting ready, he toasted some bread. He flipped the omelette and after another minute everything was ready. He carefully slid the omelette onto the toast and poured a glass of orange juice. He brought his work into the living room and urged Maddie to sit up. He handed her the plate and put the glass on the table. "Enjoy your breakfast! Let me just quickly go get my stuff..."

He wanted to get this behind him, he didn't even know what kind of stuff was in his bag. He saw the keys on the couch next to Maddie. It must have fallen out when he was going through her purse when he got the doctors number. He grabbed the keys and almost got the sensation to kiss Maddie on the forehead, but he got confused and decided not to. "Make sure you eat everything and then get some rest. I'm sure I'll be right back."

He waived uncomfortably as he closed the door behind him. It was strange that he still knew where the car was while so much else was deeply hidden in his brain. He started walking towards the parking lot where they had left the car. He held his hands in his pockets and tried to keep a steady pace. Soon enough he saw the diner where they had gotten their food the day before. He was standing at the car when he saw a blond girl exiting the diner. She looked around his age and seemed upbeat. When she saw him standing at the car she shouted out to him. "Josh, is that really you?"
