PERSONALITY

THE MOUNTAIN > Tall, intimidating, stubborn, strong, and cold at the peak. Reliable and sage as the mountain.
DEFINING TRAIT 1 > a trait describing your character.
DEFINING TRAIT 1 > a trait describing your character.

Petra is the reigning queen of bullshit, she has to be in order to be good at her job. People come into the clinic and want their backs patted, told what a good job they're doing, and want to have the condition of their pet explained in a way they can understand. Sometimes the later is not possible, and so more bullshit on top of the already stinking pile of bullshit has to be forced out of her sphincter in order to get that person to treat their pet as they should. This smiley, cordial and professional persona is far from the real Petra, and takes some effort to maintain, but it's viewed by her as "necessary". She's not interested in being second best at her job, nor is she willing to allow innocent creatures to suffer just because she can't stand the people who house them. "Being good with people", which really just amounts to being good at telling people what they want to hear, is a highly desirable skillset in any Doctor, and an excellent survival tool. And if there's one thing Petra will do, its survive, she will do what is necessary and without regret or hesitation. Her way of considering things is pragmatic and practical, she won't cry over spilled milk and takes adversity head-on. She's a woman of action, if there's something that she doesn't like she does something about it. Problems aren't moped over for her, they're broken down and figured out. In a positive light all of this shows how level headed and reliable she is, on a less favorable note she can be an unapologetic bull in a china shop.

She's stuck in a constant state of fight or flight, at least some part of her always is. That same fear in the back of her head that could inexplicably happen at any moment despite how careful she is. Being found out as superhuman. Although she is a generally cautious and paranoid individual whose life is shadowed by fear. Her reaction to fear and intimidation is actually less meek than that constant sort of living might suggest. On the contrary her reaction to it is rather aggressive and domineering, someone snarls at her, she snarls back. She bares her teeth and puffs out her chest with the best of them, and won’t back down. Animals in the wild who show weakness are the first to be preyed upon and humans as it turns out are not as far off from their bestial ancestors as they think. Petra is nothing if not a survivalist, and keeping these truths in mind she shows no vulnerabilities, shows no weakness, not to anyone. The idea of doing such a thing makes her incessantly uncomfortable.

Interacting with a person who has a god damn chip on their shoulder can be challenging and unpleasant. Her biting wit is not easy to shrug off, she's good at finding the weak points around you and digging into them. She's standoff-ish and doesn't trust anyone. Certainly not when she's proven to herself that she need only rely on her own competency. Don't expect her to do you any favors or be particularly concerned over your welfare either, her aloofness, although forced, is determined. Petra takes some getting used to, and vice versa. She never makes a good first impression to anyone other than a client or cuddly animal. But for the few who have managed to stick around and befriend her, find that they have gained a steadfast and loyal friend. She doesn't get attached to too many people, nor does she want to, but those who manage to fit that category are next of kin to her. With them she can be humorous, teasing, caring, thoughtful, and reliable.

POWER

STRENGTH > Petra's power is to manipulate the cells in the body's of others to regenerate and "heal" the body. This ability essentially injects energy into the body and manipulates it, it looks similar to a low-grade electrical current, and can be frightening and strange to watch for an observer. On the other end of that spectrum, Petra can also unheal a subject, or command their cells to self destruct in painful ways. Anything from a mildly uncomfortable inflammation to a gaping laceration. She can make you look like you were hit by a car without it actually ever happening. A subset of this ability is to absorb physical pain and dish it out without actual damage being done to the subject.WEAKNESS > This ability takes actual energy from her, and so it is limited to how much she can handle. That isn't to suggest she can't handle quite a bit however, as over the years her work has afforded her plenty of practice. Ironically, Petra can not actually heal herself. Maybe she has that ability, but she hasn't been able to do it as of yet, not that she's had much of a chance to thank god. While this ability works wonders for damaged organs and tissue, it is limited in what it can do for someone who is infected with a viral, fungal, or bacterial malady. She can direct their body to fight and lessen the symptoms, but this is arduous and constant work, and either she or the subject may give out before the battle is won. Absorbing pain from a subject can end up painful for her.

HISTORY

Petra had an immigrant mother who worked as a cleaning lady and nursemaid, and raised Petra strictly in terms of academia. She remembers her mother’s constant lecture, which was humorous in the deliverance but entirely serious in its meaning, “Become a doctor or lawyer Petra, make good money and marry a man who loves you. Then, I can come live with you and take care of your seven children.” Petra was a loyal daughter, and granted her mother’s wish, or halfway has anyway. In Petra’s own stroke of humor, she did become a doctor, but a Veterinarian instead of a well-payed human doctor. Her pay is more than enough to keep both her and her mother kept. But they certainly don’t live in a fancy house with white picket fences, and she’s certainly not married to a loving husband and pregnant with her seventh child; there’s time for that though, as her mother keeps reminding her.

Perhaps all of that is for the better however, because if Petra practiced her abilities on humans, not that she’d want to in the first place, someone would be bound to notice. Animals can not rat you out. Secrecy is her sanctuary. Though she knows of the humanly she doesn’t consider herself to be fool enough to paint a target on her back. She’s helped humans before, sneaking them into the back of the clinic and patching them up the old fashioned way for cash under the table, but that’s a business matter and not related to any sort of desire to reach out and aid humanity, let alone other superhumans, despite helping them on occasion too. This is always with a heavy warning however, it is after all illegal for a DVM to practice human medicine.

Halloween, 2020 ; Washington D. C.
6:00 P.M. Friday Night, Sixty Degrees

_____________________________

Washington D. C. is a nightwalker, hustling through each and every day hoping that the sacrifices of today would ensure a better tomorrow. Politicians battle new legislation as if the very world would end if nutritional facts were more honest about their calories. Offices are crowded with people counting down to Friday at five, when happy hour turns to happy weekend. Halloween is no different.

The sky is clear save for a few dustings of fluffy white clouds shaded yellow by the setting sun. In the suburb, parents young and old chaperone kids of all ages. Witches and cowboys, ghosts and princesses, all of them herd together for the hopes of earning their prize of a full bag of candy. Others only older in appearance but not in spirit party the night away in tighter, shorter versions of the same costumes that the young ones pound the streets in. There is a wicked spirit in the air, but also a sense of freedom. This is the night that superhumans roam the streets freely, if only to feel like they're not the monsters here; the one day they don't have to wear costumes.

On the outskirts of the city, just enough for the taller buildings to shield it, is a hotel. On the front, in bright pink neon, is the words "NO VACANCIES"; to further the point, dozens of cars, trucks, vans, even bikes, are crowded the parking lot beside it. It's tall, at least ten stories, but looks almost like a ghost building, despite the liveliness of the people coming in and out at all hours of the day. Tonight, the lights are few because most of their people are out enjoying the one night where they don't have to watch their backs so closely. Still, tonight is special: the lights would flicker up again and the ghost would revive, if only for a few hours. Every Halloween, they always have a party.

Not so much a party, but a celebration of life. For another year, they escaped the discrimination that might one day kill them all. Every year they each line up to give a drop of their blood for access into the Underground, where the true Humanly headquarters lies. The first floor is strictly for living; couches and beanbags of all shapes and sizes are scattered in organized living rooms, a maze of curtains create bedrooms for those who couldn't find any room upstairs, and the other half of the room is a dining hall big enough for a hundred to eat. Below that floor is the Humanly of strategy and mission planning, where a young woman will sit slaving away until someone tugs her up to the party she's supposed to be hosting. This night is only meant for fun.

And fun it would be. String lights covering every inch of the ceiling, background music queued up, and a time to be human.
