His mother always told him he has sad eyes, the kind that could express emotion better than a seasoned actor. The stark green eyes are a trait the Wilson men have passed down for three generations, but only Jude seems to have the lack of stone wall to hide his emotions behind. He used to grow his bangs out to hide behind but his mother would always make him gel them back, so he just cut it off and created his own barrier. His parents always wanted him to show his strength in his beauty, because there wasn't other strength there. They paid for a surgery to sculpt the perfect nose on his dainty face, to match the pouty lips underneath. He stayed perfectly groomed, like a pet for them to showcase. On his own, he strays from their strict rules with unkempt bangs and bushy eyebrows. Still, he's never been much more than a "pretty boy", which the other boys at school would shout at him.

He played the part of a "pretty boy" with his outfit choices too. Button-ups and sweaters, khakis or dress pants, always dress shoes, and a light gray suit for church on Sunday. It usually ranged in the same color palette of white, navy, dark green, brown, gray, or black. He always wore them simply because he didn't have much of a choice. He didn't have his own money. When he did, he expanded into rich reds and light blues and royal purples. He became a big fan of turtlenecks and high-waisted jeans, well, any jeans. He was willing to try new colors and new things he'd never even seen before, and hasn't regretted it yet.

There are many things that the Bible can teach you. Respect your parents, don't steal, don't lie, and "love thy neighbor". For all of his life, Jude has had every word of it printed onto his mind, shouted at him every Sunday, and even spoken from his own lips as his head bowed for the pre-dinner prayer. He was a good kid, always saying yes ma'am or yes sir, doing his chores, and trying to be the son that his parents wanted. He never had much of a backbone, bending to the strong will of his parents.

Jude isn't exactly sure who he is. Growing up in such a strict home, he wasn't allowed to have his own thoughts. He was expected to repeat the thoughts ingrained into him by his parents and maybe that's why he has a hard time growing a backbone. That isn't to say he isn't friendly, and can certainly speak to a stranger without nervousness or a shaking voice. On the contrary, evangelism requires a powerful voice booming the words to a congregation. Quiet men are weak men. Strong men speak loud and always know what they're talking about. Jude wouldn't necessarily call himself a strong person, but with the right words he can pretend to be. In truth, he is easily led and easily molded in the person that someone else wants him to be. Some would call that adaptable, others call it weak-willed. But as long as he's not in trouble, he doesn't care who he is. The only person he wants to be is a good person. Kindness can flow from his mouth as easily as a back-handed compliment if it keeps him out of trouble. There are many things he won't fight for, including his own kind.

As much as he likes being around superhumans, the openness of their presence, he was taught of their wickedness. He was told that it was the devil living inside them, inside him. Problem was, he could never quite understand that. He couldn't understand hating people, and though he may have led them to believe he hated, he couldn't find it in his heart to hate anyone. Jude finds himself too fragile to hold that much hatred in his heart, and refuses it all if he had the choice. But he is human, as much as others try to tell him otherwise. There are people he hates, and for those people, nothing can save them from his burning gaze. Forgive, but never forget.

But think of the capacity to love. He believes in the goodness of others as much as possible, and tries to love as much as he can. Love is what allows him to forgive his parents for what they've done to him, and helps him befriend others easily. Thinking of everyone as someone to love has taken weight of his burdened shoulders, if only a little. For now, he lives life in an ocean, letting whatever current flows by take hold of him. Inside him is a fire that yearns to be struck, but it has been stomped on so many times it's hard to even get a spark to strike. He believes in a capacity within him to be his own defender and stand up for himself and his people, but he has to keep himself soft and meek, afraid of what his ability might become if he became a fire. He cannot allow the chaos to consume him, lest he destroy the world in his own blazing downfall.


STRENGTH > chaos manipulation: the ability to manipulate the chaotic forces of
the universe. There is so much possible with an ability like this, a power strong
enough to shatter reality. Fortunately, that has happened yet, but there are some
applications of it that he has learned. Most of it is environmental chaos, like causing
a large bookcase to fall or creating a earthquake. Usually in moments of extreme
emotional or physical duress, his power can become uncontrollable, shooting out
chaotic energy or latching onto someone nearby him. He's caused insanity and injury,
mass panic and even illness through chaos within the human body. There is hardly
a limit, which makes him incredibly unstable. The biggest strength he holds is to
keep himself emotionally stable; when he is in check, what little law and order he
has to outweigh the chaos that tries to overtake him is subdued.
WEAKNESS > he has no control of his ability except to contain it within him. He is
often sick because the chaotic energy works against him when he doesn't release it.
When he was younger, he didn't know what brought it on except it didn't happen
if his emotions were in line. When he is troubled emotionally, there is no telling what
will happen to those around him. He isn't sure of the full extent of his abilities, and
chooses to simply keep them shut inside him. Jude really can't control what happens
when, so even trying to focus his ability to do one thing can end up doing something
else entirely. Using his ability wears him out emotionally and physically, sometimes
leaving him out for days. But he has a sneaking suspicion that the chaos is a vital
part of his body, and removing it would leave an imbalance he couldn't survive. The
goal is to neutralize the energy without removing the energy from his body.


The Wilson bloodline is cursed; that's what Jude's father always told him, anyway. Every generation of the Wilson bloodline has a dark stain: those who created fire from their fingertips, those who could soar in the air without any airplane, and even those who detailed the future from a daydream. The cursed gene, no matter how hard they tried, passed on every generation, even though they snuffed out any who showed their true nature. Jude remembers a dark time in his childhood when they discovered his Uncle Glenn could create images from his mind and project them into reality. Jude loved his uncle's stories, but his family surely didn't. Glenn had to escape or his own family would turn him in to the government, or worse, try to "exorcise the devil from him". All too soon, Jude would have his own demons to worry about. When Jude was ten years old, his powers started to show.

His father Judah and mother Rachel were stunned. Their child, a superhuman? No, he was human, he had to be. Judah and Rachel were sure that a devil had possessed their son, and immediately took him to the church. Once the priest saw his horrible curse, he brought him to an exorcist as soon as possible. A child that could destroy things just by existing couldn't possibly be the work of superhumans, no, satan himself must have possessed the boy. He didn't act like any demon they'd seen before: there wasn't a dark voice manipulated by a dark being, his appearance didn't change, there was nothing dark about the child except for the ability he possessed. Still, the priest did what he could. He explained to Judah and Rachel that purifying their son could take months, even years. All they could do was pray for God's help to save their son.

From the moment Jude's parents believed in this possession, Jude was doomed to never live a normal life. He lived his first ten years as a happy kid. Sure, little things happened here and there, bookshelves falling or a classmate randomly getting sick, but he never thought anything of it. When he turned ten however, he went on a field trip with his school and got lost. His anxiety spiked, causing his emotions to rise, and he accidentally sent out a wave of energy, causing mass panic in the museum they went to. It was a coincidence, his young brain assumed, until it happened at home. While taking his plate to the sink to wash it, he dropped it, and the moment of fearfulness sent out another chaotic wave, causing dishes to fly from their cabinets and crash to the floor. It only got worse the more his parents talked about the possibility of a demon in their house, and once they linked it to him, he lost most of his control. The exorcist came by almost every day, trying to rid the demons from his body. He only succeeded in frightening Jude more, and his health declined so much that his body couldn't create chaotic energy lest he fall to unconsciousness. They thought this was it, the demon was gone, but it took a week or two for the chaotic attacks to return.

Jude ran away when he first noticed, and found the one person he hoped could help him: his Uncle Glenn. The older man left a number Jude never showed anyone and when he ran up to his doorstep, shaking with chaotic energy, Glenn helped him. The calm aura of the older superhuman helped him more than any exorcist could. He spent two years with his uncle before his old priest saw him at the grocery store. His uncle was charged with kidnapping and Jude was taken back to his parents, which made his anxiety reach its breaking point. His power was so out of control that his parents had no choice but to take him to the government. He was destroying entire buildings, turning their town into a frenzied mess. The government took him to a building with a lot of white rooms, and he was kept in a state of sedation until they could find something that would negate his powers, if only for a while. He's been in government custody for five years, transitioning from sedation to a variation of pills that negated his powers and usually had some sort of side effect and required hypnotherapy. Recently, they let him out with a government agent to test the effects of the pills, and he's managed to escape, hoping to find the Humanly his uncle always talked about.

He still wears a small cross necklace around his neck.
Jude loves dogs more than anything on the planet but
is too afraid to own a living creature. His birthday is
Halloween but he was never allowed to celebrate the
"pagan holiday"; he is still making it up. Anything
related to Catholicism makes him tense up, except
singing hymns. He actually sings quite a lot, it helps
him calm down. Jude visits his uncle in prison when
the government allows him to, he left a letter last
time secretly revealing his escape plan through code.
A gold cross necklace dripping blood. Hysterical
readings from the Bible. Chocolate icecream. "1, 2, 3,
4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Calm down, Jude." Deep breathing.
Hymns sung in a soft tenor. The churning feeling of
utter chaos that constantly racks his body, and fear.
"The humans hurt me more than anyone else could."
Puppy breath. Flowers, especially yellow ones. Wide
smiles. Resting his head against a chest and hearing
a steady heartbeat. The numb of negation pills and
sedation. Always being the freak, never normal.

Halloween, 2020 ; Washington D. C.
6:00 P.M. Friday Night, Sixty Degrees


Washington D. C. is a nightwalker, hustling through each and every day hoping that the sacrifices of today would ensure a better tomorrow. Politicians battle new legislation as if the very world would end if nutritional facts were more honest about their calories. Offices are crowded with people counting down to Friday at five, when happy hour turns to happy weekend. Halloween is no different.

The sky is clear save for a few dustings of fluffy white clouds shaded yellow by the setting sun. In the suburb, parents young and old chaperone kids of all ages. Witches and cowboys, ghosts and princesses, all of them herd together for the hopes of earning their prize of a full bag of candy. Others only older in appearance but not in spirit party the night away in tighter, shorter versions of the same costumes that the young ones pound the streets in. There is a wicked spirit in the air, but also a sense of freedom. This is the night that superhumans roam the streets freely, if only to feel like they're not the monsters here; the one day they don't have to wear costumes.

On the outskirts of the city, just enough for the taller buildings to shield it, is a hotel. On the front, in bright pink neon, is the words "NO VACANCIES"; to further the point, dozens of cars, trucks, vans, even bikes, are crowded the parking lot beside it. It's tall, at least ten stories, but looks almost like a ghost building, despite the liveliness of the people coming in and out at all hours of the day. Tonight, the lights are few because most of their people are out enjoying the one night where they don't have to watch their backs so closely. Still, tonight is special: the lights would flicker up again and the ghost would revive, if only for a few hours. Every Halloween, they always have a party.

Not so much a party, but a celebration of life. For another year, they escaped the discrimination that might one day kill them all. Every year they each line up to give a drop of their blood for access into the Underground, where the true Humanly headquarters lies. The first floor is strictly for living; couches and beanbags of all shapes and sizes are scattered in organized living rooms, a maze of curtains create bedrooms for those who couldn't find any room upstairs, and the other half of the room is a dining hall big enough for a hundred to eat. Below that floor is the Humanly of strategy and mission planning, where a young woman will sit slaving away until someone tugs her up to the party she's supposed to be hosting. This night is only meant for fun.

And fun it would be. String lights covering every inch of the ceiling, background music queued up, and a time to be human.
