Bitter | Paranoid | Obsessive

Xayah would happily call herself a broken person. Thanks to her life's history of course she would be - at least in her opinion, Xayah considers herself to be the best she can be. She's very hateful about the world, about the blind happy people who turn their eyes away from others. People who live blissful lives while ignorant to what's really going on will always be one of her biggest pet peeves. Of course, Xayah has a habit of thinking everyone's out to get her - and possibly for good reason, too. She tends to cling to ideas and thoughts and ideals and hold onto them as if they were a life boat keeping her afloat in the harsh currents trying to drag her under the surface. Without her stubborn clinging, it is likely Xayah would have drowned in her despair long ago.

Of course, with Mei, Xayah is very different.

It would be easy to mistake the normal Xayah and the Xayah in front of her best and only friend as two completely different people. All of a sudden the grumpy morose girl would be illuminated, her eyes filled with light, her heart with hope and desperation. She lightens up, but she has more at stake as well. Xayah would do anything for Mei, especially after how badly she failed with her. She might never forgive herself, but her love and affection for her best friend outweighs all of that self hatred. Everything for Mei.

Xayah and Mei have been together for almost their entire lives. Together they were experiments done by an enigmatic organization that calls themselves Anima Rea. The children were birthed by scientists and as such their entire lives from the beginning were as fellow experiments. The two children were naturally bonded together and vowed to stick up for one another whenever they could. Of course, this just resulted in punishments for them both, but as long as they suffered together, it was okay. It was a codependency because in all of Anima Rea, they only had one another as allies. Xayah's anger and grit helped keep Mei brave, while Mei's jokes and eyes full of hope gave Xayah the strength to keep on fighting. Even now, free from Anima Rea, they will always be best of friends, no matter what happens.

Image

Tyren Vahlen is the Head Scientist of Anima Rea and he was the one in charge of the girls for the experiments. While not especially sadistic, the experiments were often painful and torturous, causing both girls much horror and trauma in the name of science. Of course this means Xayah utterly despises the man. In the beginning, Mei tried to appeal to his goodness, to show Xayah that not everyone is evil but after a breakout attempt, Xayah and Mei were forced to torture each other as punishment and never again did either girl try to see him as anything but an enemy. Vahlen is still out there somewhere, and Xayah will never let him touch Mei ever again.

"What happens if we break two souls past the point of no return?" A scientist by the name of Tyren Vahlen asked one day. "What happens if we fuse their souls together? If something like that were possible, could we engineer a power strong enough to save us from the Yokai?" Many decades from now, Tyren gathered a group of especially bright minds and they set up their organization to work in the secrets of the shadows, with the sole goal of forging two souls into one, to create a weapon strong enough to defeat demons. They were tired, tired of bowing to the demons, tired of suffering the consequences of their wishes. They wanted to be free, they wanted to enjoy their wish without worry, they did not want to live knowing that they no longer had free will. It was their conceited arrogance, but it was a cute rebellion.

Xayah and Mei were born, the two souls destined in this cursed existence. While in the beginning they were given nourishment and what appeared to be love, once they were older and a bit sturdier, the experiments began. The scientists would cut them up, tear them apart, give them scary drugs that burned their bodies from the inside or twisted their minds so that all they saw were the horrible nightmares plaguing every sleep they were given. But the purpose of the experiment was for the two souls to bond and that they did, the girls clinging to the only comfort that they had - each other. "Mei, I'll kill them all." A child Xayah whispered against the glass, wondering if she would ever be allowed to touch her friend. "Don't be a killer.' Mei whispered back, hand also against the glass of their separate glass boxes that was their world. "Stay good and pure and we will be rewarded."

But this promise of a reward for being good never happened and as the girls aged and the experiments got worse and worse, they still were never able even once to touch, to feel each other's skin, to hold hands. Did the other even exist? Sometimes it was hard to tell, but the easiest thing was to believe in each other and not let the scientists have their way. One day though, Xayah had an idea. She attacked a scientist, biting and clawing and scratching, even as Mei screamed for her to stop, Xayah was able to get out. Mei told her to run, to get to safety, but there was no way she would ever go without her pink haired best friend. "No! Not without you!" And so she broke the glass using the scientist's shoe and grabbed hold of Mei's hand, clinging to the hope of a wonderful world on the outside. A world just for them, that they could see together.

But Tyren stopped them of course, he was not going to give them the mercy of freedom, not when he was so close to completing the experiment. With freedom oh so close, they were forced back into their glass cages. Tyren came to punish them then, activating their cages to flay off the girl's skin. They each had a button and whenever one of them couldn't take the skinning anymore she could press it and then the trap in the other glass cage would start tearing off the skin of the other girl. But even so, they both seemed to agree to take as much as they could before letting it go to the other. With tears and apologies, the girls shared the burden until Tyren was satisfied that they had learned their lesson.

That night, two figures entered the base, almost as if they were dark shadows. "Would you like to make a wish?" Having heard of the Yokai from the scientists and knowing all about what consequences were, Xayah knew she had to act quick. If she didn't, then Mei would make her wish and then pure innocent Mei would be forced to bear the weight of a consequence all on her own. No, she decided, she would be the one to suffer the consequence! "I wish for the power to break free and save us!" She screamed at the Yokai who smiled and granted the wish. Before her eyes, with a flick of the finger, Mei began to scream, her body melted down, she warped, transformed, she became something different altogether. "No! No, what are you doing?!" Xayah shrieked, pounding her fist on the glass. The smile never left. "Granting your wish, of course."

"Save us, Mei." She thought, the magic word to trigger it. The strange creature Mei had become transformed again, turning into a sharp blade that flowed with a sort of magical power. The blade smashed through the glass and fell into Xayah's hand. "Go then, earn your freedom." Xayah grit her teeth and with Mei as her sword, they broke free, finding themselves in a strange land. Tokyo, it was, it was the land of the Japanese. Both she and Mei were mixed Chinese-European, but that didn't matter. The only thing that mattered right now was freedom.

But nothing is without a price. Mei had become a monster, a tiny little butterfly creature, unable to speak, unable to do anything on her own. She was so fragile, and there was nothing Xayah could do to bring her friend back into her human form. "Is she in there?" She asked the Yokai, and of course the answer was confirmed. "That is Mei's soul, don't worry. She is there, and she always will be." Trapped in this form, was Mei screaming still, just like the day she became like this? Xayah was a weapon created to fight the Yokai. She didn't know if she was strong enough to do that. But for now, she knew that she was still on the run, still had to fight. But the best way to save yourself was to kill whoever wanted to hurt you, first.

"Don't worry, Mei." Xayah whispered, turning the butterfly into a blade. "I'll kill all those scientists and they'll never touch us again."
