Flare

"I already am the very best, like no one ever was!"

a character in “Through New Eyes”, as played by Krypt

Description

Description

"Well I got four feet! And here the humans are thinking their better at us than everything..."

Flare is a wild Growlithe, and as such has all the scratches and scruffiness that one would expect from a Pokemon who wasn't pampered. That's not to say he doesn't care about his appearance, but he does tend to let his fur go whichever way it wants after his morning grooming. He has the orange and black fur common among all puppy Pokemon, though his creamy accents tend to shade more white when they are kept clean. A crafty smirk often plays across his face, almost as his natural expression, and a pair of dark eyes complement his black button nose. Although he is fully grown, he shows little other signs of age, suggesting that he is still a relatively young Growlithe.

Personality

"Am I haughty? Well, I am certainly a looker. You're not all that bad yourself!"

Flare is cocky, headstrong, and arrogant. He knows that he is right and there is no way he will be convinced otherwise. Rarely is there a conversation that he doesn't try to take charge of, often trying to domineer his fellows with a loud voice and forceful words. When confronted about this very fact, he claims that he just acts this way around strangers, who he feels he needs to put up a tough front of words to make up for his small size. And, for the most part, he does stick to this claim. When around those smaller than him, or those he knows better, he is a bit softer with his hard tone and a bit cooler in his fiery demeanor.

Equipment

"I was born with all I need! Why add to it?"

Flare rarely carries anything on him, except for the occasional trinket he scrounged up from a human habitation.

Background

"Well not to much to say here. Just surviving and doing a good job at it!"

Flare grew up in Atira, and after the usual trivialities that accompany most Pokemon youths, and human youths for that matter, Flare came to live on the outskirts of Azmar village. Humans were always curious creatures to him, the way they walked and the things they used. Even more curious was their seeming mastery over Pokemon. The young Growlithe simply didn't get it. Why would perfectly reasonable Pokemon enslave themselves to these bizarre bipeds? Especially when the humans used them to fight! Now Flare wasn't against fighting, and he has had more than one tussle with a Fenican over a scrap of Stantler. But there wasn't any point to this human driven scuffling! No food to fight over, no scores to settle. Just mindless skirmishing. And from what Flare could tell, they weren't even rewarded for it afterwards! They got fed all the same. Barbaric.

Still, prowling around the village did have its perks. At night, when all was quiet, Flare would often sneak into the alleys and and byways to look at the stuff that the humans had discarded. Bottles, canopeners, and even the odd egg beater. They all intrigued him. He would often drag one away to the woods to look at for a while. However, once his den got too crowded with all the knick-knacks and other clutter he began to swap things out as he fancied them. Still, living in the woods wasn't free, and he had to spend much of his day hunting for food. His real desire was to try out what those contemptible Pokemon who lived in the village ate. They seemed to enamored by it, and Flare couldn't see why. He wanted to know. But they never threw any of those pellets away! Shameful.

And so Flare has lived, always in the shadows with his head held high, looking down on the humans as tyrants and their Pokemon as undignified. Always waiting for a chance to snag a fresh trinket to brag about later. Interesting.

Flare slowly stepped his paw around the corner, his claws gripping dirt as his nose protruded from around the masonry wall. This was strange. No sight, sound, or even smell of the humans. They had all up and left! They had been leaving for some days now, in bunches and bands. But there had always been a few left behind. The young Growlithe had been growing more bold with every passing day. First he begun to chance going into the outskirts to snoop around for trinkets, and then later into the alleys. Now there was so little sign of life that the cautious Growlithe was pressing up against a house in broad daylight! He had always hoped to get inside one of these strange buildings, to see their stuff and smell their food. But he wasn't going to risk getting captured to do so. But now that there wasn't even a hint of the enemy about, Flare steeled his nerves and took a chance.

He wasn't about to going barging in a door. He wasn't really even sure how to open those. Rather he intended to first have a look through one of the windows, and plan his way from there. He had selected his window carefully. It belonged to a house that sat a little apart from the village, and faced away from the main square. The window had a picnic table beneath it, and Flare assured himself that he could make the jump from the bench to the sill if he tried. If not, well, at least there wasn't anyone around to see him. Even those captured Pokemon that the enemy had fighting for them didn't seem to be about.

Taking a deep breath, Flare dashed a long the wall of the house, quickly attacking the bench with a mighty spring. He landed it, splinters in his paws notwithstanding. Now for the vertical jump. A meter of masonry between him and the view he had always wanted to see. With a growl, the small fire Pokemon leaped upwards, his rough paws fighting to get a padhold on the ledge. It didn't work. He crashed down. His second attempt was more successful, and with a final heave he was on the window ledge.

Since he didn't know what to expect, there wasn't much to be disappointed about. It was a bedroom, colorfully decorated with fancy pictures on the walls. Flare was more interested in the bedside table that had little nick-nacks on it than the decor. Suddenly, he spotted movement. It was a Vulpix! A young one at that. She looked a little out of it, and Flare began to wonder if she was wild. She didn't look like she knew what she was doing in there.

There was a small opening at the bottom of the window, and Flare couldn't resist calling through. If she was wild, he'd know soon enough. If wilds were already breaking into houses, there was no reason why he shouldn't! "Hey kid! Wher'd you score that! That's a fancy lookin' bauble!"

Luna jumped, looking around. Finally, she found the source of the voice; a Growlithe. She had never owned a Growlithe herself, though she had considered looking for one. She shrugged that thought off; she wasn't going to be catching one anytime soon, not like this. She decided to sit facing the Pokemon.

"Oh, this has always been mine. It was a gift, from family. A while ago actually. I just never leave it behind," she answered. She hesitated to add anything more. She had no idea whether or not this one had been a human before, but she could tell he wasn't anyone from the village. She'd remember that accent for sure. She looked back to her necklace.

"I just...seem to be having a hard time putting it around me neck, where it belongs, is all. But I can't leave it behind. I mean, it was from family; my sister would be very upset if I lost it, you know?" She added, looking back to the Growlithe. How was she going to figure out whether he was a wild Pokemon, or a human? She figured that could wait. She was a little exasperated with being called a kid, but decided not to push the issue. After all, who was to say how old he was? Maybe to him, she was a child.

"Umm...my name is Luna, by the way. Could I ask your name?" She added, curiously, if a little cautiously. She wasn't usually so talkative, but she really did need to figure things out.

"Well I'd hope ya could, otherwise you'd be askin' for a teasin'!" responded Flare, a toothy grin fixed on his face. As he lowered his head to look at the small opening under the window, he quickly added "I'm Flare though. Nice to know you kid." He wasn't really sure what to make of her yet, but he was beginning to lean towards her being a wild who got lucky. Really lucky, in fact, if her family gave her that kind of jewelry to wear. For all the humiliation that the enemy puts captured Pokemon through, they certainly obsessed over them. Flare doubted that any captured Pokemon would get lucky enough to be left behind if the humans could help it.

The window sill was wide enough for him to lay down on, and by doing so, he was able to press his cheek down against the ledge to try and see what was keeping the window down. Straining his eyes, he managed to see a small latch that was all that was keeping the wood-framed window from sliding up any further. Sitting back up, he pawed at the aperture, realizing after a few swipes that his paw was too large to fit through the slit. Obviously some human had just wanted to let in some fresh air, not some curious Pokemon. How rude.

"Say kid, how'd you get in there? Couldn't have come this way," Flare asked, continuing to study his transparent barrier for a moment. Then, as if he had an afterthought, his eyes shifted away from the where the latch was and back to the Vulpix. His grin turning to a smirk, the Growlithe added "unless you locked yourself in there to keep all the food to yourself!"

Luna tilted her head to one side. Flare? She didn't know any human by that name, or any human that had named their Pokemon that. But that didn't mean she could assume whatever she wanted. She didn't know everything about everyone, after all. She watched his attempts at getting through the window. She had left it open so she could hear, so that she could help defend her village from...whatever that light was. But she supposed that really didn't help, since clearly the light only changed people into Pokemon.

Wait...what if it wasn't just her? She wasn't the only one left in the village, right? Others had stayed to help fight, hadn't they? She brushed that thought off. Either way, they were probably Pokemon, too. And she wasn't entirely sure what she was going to do, as a Pokemon. When Flare spoke again, she withdrew herself from her thoughts.

"Oh...well, the doors pretty easy to open, once you know how. Well...I suppose human hands make it easier than paws, though..." she answered. she stood again, wobbling a little as she learned her new balance on all fours. She started towards the winder, then paused, looking up at the small table just under the window. Could she make it from here? No, probably not...not when she didn't know her balance. She glanced off to the side. Her bed was shorter, and right next to the table. She could make that! ...Probably.

"Hold on; I'll open the latch from this side, alright?" she told him, hesitating as she mentally readied herself for the jump. She jumped, as high as she could, onto the bed. She stumbled a bit and fell as she landed. This was going to take quite a bit of getting used to. She shook her head, standing up again. She turned and jumped onto the small table, barely preventing herself from falling on the other side of it. She glanced at her necklace; it was safe there, on the floor, right? She looked back to the window, now in front of her, and pawed at the latch until she unlocked the window. She used her new nose to try to push the window up. Unfortunately, she wasn't overly strong, and barely managed to lift it a little, though now at least Flares paw would fit.

"Umm...you might have to help lift...I really...can't..."

Happily surprised that Luna was willing to help him in, Flare jammed his forepaws into the newly widened slit beneath the window. He alternated between raising his left paw and his right paw, each straining to raise the window a little higher. As he worked, he grunted out a quick thanks. "Say, did ya' sleep in there, kid? You look pretty groggy. How long have the humans been gone outta here?"

It was a matter of a minute to have a gap wide enough for him to squeeze through. Popping out on the other end, he stumbled forward from the sill until he had joined her on the bedside table. Intensely curious as to what he would find in here, he didn't stay on the desk for long, and quickly hopped over to the bed. The squishy surface felt so strange on his paws, used as they were to the rough dirt and debris of the woods. It was almost like walking on pine needles that had all their pointy bits taken off. He didn't know if he liked it, but it certainly was a curious feeling. Almost on an impulse, he grabbed a pillow with his teeth and began to shake it, wondering what was inside. He was rewarded with ripped stitches and flying stuffing. Flare would have to remind himself to bring one of these pillows back with him, he could pad his den.

"Ya' find their food yet? It always smells so good from the forest, eh?" Flare said agreeably after he had had his fun. He hopped down from the bed, and began to make his way out into the hall, pausing before a great glass door that face towards the village. It really was deserted here.

Luna thought about his questions for a moment. She could tell him she had slept there, she supposed. After all, that didn't mean exposing the fact that she was human. She still wasn't sure how he'd handle finding that on out. But that only made answering the second question a little harder. Technically the humans were probably still there; she was still there, after all. She decided she'd tell them truth, but still be a little vague.

"Well, I did sleep here, I guess. A for the humans...I'm not exactly sure how long. Not too long, I think." Which was true; she had no idea how long she'd been unconscious for, after all. She watched, cringing slightly, as Flare destroyed her pillow, suddenly glad she had put her favorite pillow in the wash. She was sure he was just curious, and wasn't trying to destroy things, but still...

"Oh, food?" She asked, jumping off the table. "Sure, I can show you where it is. Maybe a snack wouldn't be so bad. And maybe, after we've eaten, we can look around the village a bit." She needed to see if she could find anyone else from the village. But food probably needed to come first. She knew she was starting to feel hungry, herself. She paused to pick her necklace back up in her mouth. She was a little more comfortable with this form, but still looked a little unsteady. She paused as she walked past Flare, looking to see what he was looking t through the glass door. All she could see were empty buildings. Had everyone left, or run off? She glaced at the floor before heading to the kitchen. They would probably make a mess, but that really didn't seem like a big deal right then.

Thinking of his guided tour of the human home as nothing more than good fortune, Flare turned away from the window when he saw that his guide was moving on. After all, this next stop was sure to be a good one. Passing through more rooms, which apart from having some interesting wood furniture and some more pretty pictures hanging on the walls didn't have anything noteworthy. Well, to Flare at least. The Growlithe understood he was in the kitchen when the surface of the floor change and the smell of vittles grew stronger. Now where was the good stuff?

"What've you tried? Tried any of those pellet things yet? They don't look that great from what I've seen of 'em but their caged Pokemon seem to eat them right up," Flare asked, his eyes wandering around the kitchen rather than directed at the Vulpix. The tables and counters were quite high up, and the Growlithe wasn't sure how to access them. It was quite the leap. He sniffed the air, and he could what seemed to be some fruits and perhaps grain up top, but not meat. That was the real goal. He didn't know what the enemy did to their meat, but whatever it was they certainly made it smell good when the scent of it wafted of over to the woods. Whatever was on the other side of that cloud of sweet savor had always been out of reach of the wild Pokemon.

It didn't take long for the inquisitive Flare to realize that the cabinets were not solid, and that they had floor level cupboards which could be opened. He began to make his way along the bank of doors that lined counter that ringed the kitchen, with both excitement and disappointment rearing their heads at each new aperture. Mostly pots and pans, but one cupboard had a curious looking tool that the humans called a whisk. Flare called it a hard branch with metal pine needles looping on the top of it. Both parties were probably partly right.

Luna only glanced at the pictures as they passes. She knew what was there, she knew where everything was. She supposed that was a good thing. It meant that however she had turned into a Pokemon, it hadn't affected her home. Well, not directly, at least. This whole situation now meant going through and dirtying her mother's kitchen. She wasn't going to like that at all. When they stopped at the kitchen, she set her necklace down carefully, so a part of the chain was on her paw.

"Well, I haven't actually tried the...pellets. Just the human food." She poked her nose under the chain and used that to finally loop the necklace around her neck, where it belonged. Granted, it was probably a little long for her now, and she'd probably just have to be careful so she wouldn't step on it. She looked back to Flare, rummaging through the cupboards along the floor. She shook her head. There was a reason they kept so little food on the floor. Her Pokemon had tried that a few times, as had her parents Pokemon.

"The food is actually up higher, in those cabinets above the counters. But there's some in the fridge, too," she said, turning and Makin her way to the fridge. She used her nose and on paw to help her open the fridge. Her leftovers were still there, from the night before, but everything else was pretty much just the basic ingredients; milk, cheese, eggs, juice, some fruits and vegetables and berries, though there were a few cupcakes as well. Luna did like to bake on occasion, but only when she knew her mother was stressed. Like about the light.

"If you really want the pellets, they're actually on top of the fridge. I don't think I could reach them. Umm...actually, if you don't mind, I have a question for you. There was this...bright light. It's why he humans left, you know? I was wondering if you had seen it?" It might have been a long shot, but it was worth a try. The more she found out, the better.

Flare heeded his companion's advice, halting his search with a metal pot halfway removed from its cupboard. Letting the cookware tip over with a mighty twang, the Growlithe was confused as to what a "fridge" was until the Vulpix demonstrated. Ah. Just a big metal cabinet. Coming close to it, Flare was taken aback to how cool it was on the inside, even cooler than the rather pleasant home they were inside. It was like walking into a deep cave, and yet he had not even entered the doorway. Strange.

"Bright light? Dunno about that kid, unless ya' mean the sun. But I'm sure you already know about that one. I know the humans have some bright lights going on when its dark outside, if that's what you mean. Maybe they all shoved off because they could never sleep," Flare suggested, doing his best not to brush off the question. It was a tall order when there was so much to look at. It certainly smelled like food, much more than that thrown out garbage that Flare sometimes found in the alleyway. Still, he was curious about the pellets, and part of him just wanted to blast the bag off with a jet of flame. That might ruin the rest of the food. Though there were other houses, this couldn't be the only place to eat...

Maybe later. He still wanted to see if this house had good trinkets. For now he would settle himself with the eggs that he saw. Pidgy eggs were good when they were fresh, he had the pleasure of snagging them a few times from their nests. Only from the low perches, however, Flare hated heights.

"So where you from, then? I've seen a Vulpix or two around but not you yet," Flare asked as he fought to get an egg off a shelf. It was in a strange carton, but Flare was able to locate it by the smell. The Growlithe prided himself in knowing the Pokemon in the woods, it was good to know who you're friends were. It was strange that this kid had showed up unannounced like this. Perhaps that explained why she was so bold to come into this human house - she didn't know any better.

Luna winced as Flare ate. Raw eggs? Were Pokemon and humans really so different from one another? But she should have known; these kinds of houses, the things humans created, were entirely unnatural. Pokemon were much less so. That didn't make it any easier to watch him eating the eggs raw, straight from the carton. She decided to look around the kitchen instead, listening to Flares response. She shook her head.

"No, this was...different. I know the sun, and I know the human lights, but this...this was entirely different." So he didn't know anything, either? She supposed she would have to start looking for more information elsewhere. And even then, she'd need help. She hoped the Growlithe before her would be willing. But it still wouldn't hurt to take a look around the village for other humans. Flare acted like there were no humans left. That just meant they were Pokemon as well. She hoped anyway.

She paused, looking over the Growlithe carefully.this may very well lead her to revealing that she was actually a human. But she couldn't lie; as a human, she got caught way too easily. What made it any different now that she was a Pokemon? She'd just have to answer honestly, and hope for the best.

"Actually, I was born here, in the village. I grew up here. I traveled for a little while, but otherwise, I've never left the village. I'm...not even entirely sure i left the forest," she added, somewhat embarrassed. She hadn't wanted to admit she had gotten lost. Not that that was the reason she had returned, but it was still embarrassing to admit.

Flare had never had eggs chilled before, and he wasn't sure how he liked them. It seemed as if they were even slimier when they were not warm, and the Growlithe ended up drooling out half the yolk as he listened to Luna. So she was a captured, then? Must have been a terrible life to not know what life was like without a breeder smothering you. Egg still dripping from his jaws, he gave her the look of pity that he gave to most captured Pokemon. Not that he got to use it up close that often, he didn't like getting close to the captives when the enemy was sure to be close by.

"Well, you've managed to escape now, haven't ya? No enemy to be seen 'round here. If it makes you feel any better kid, there ain't a whole lotta interestin' stuff outside the forest," Flare said condescendingly, jumping to his own conclusions without bothering to probe further. She being a tamed Pokemon explained plenty, and the lest time Flare spent trying to explain this Vulpix was the more time he could spend fixing his breakfast dilemma.

Now that most of the first egg was on the floor, Flare gave up with trying to pluck them directly from the carton. Instead, he simply knocked the carton over and allowed the few remaining eggs to roll out onto the floor. Gathering up the wobbly orbs, he decided to take the temperature problem into his own paws by engulfing the whole lot of them with an ember. He steadied himself. The sensation of warmth that began to rise in his chest was as natural as the feeling of being full or the feeling of being thirsty. Taking a deep breath, he exhaled a hot mixture of air and red flame, engulfing the messy eggs in a fiery mass.

Luna winced, seeing the egg on the floor. The egg drooling from his mouth, in addition to the look of pity, was very strange. She decided to ignore it. After all, Flare might be willing to help. Although, she couldn't see how she would even begin to find a way to fix the situation. With no clues as to where to even begin, was she stuck like this?

She thought over what he was saying. Escape? Perhaps he thought she was a Pokemon bred in the village. No enemies...it sounded like he might think of humans as enemies. And that maybe, just maybe he had left the forest and seen a little bit outside of the forest. But she couldn't believe that there wasn't anything interesting outside the forest.

"I'm not quite sure I agree with you there. There has to be a lot of interesting things to see outside the forest. I mean, there just has to be so much more out there. Mountains, open plains, the ocean...there has to be o much to see out there. So much that is very different." She paused, forcing herself to relax. Getting herself excite here did nothing. She needed to remain calm o she could figure this out. She watched Flare cook the eggs using his fire. That was probably something she could learn, now that she was a Vulpix herself. But maybe that could wait. She knew there were some people who kept their Pokemon food outside. Granted, it would take a little bit of work to get it out from the bags or crates they were in, but not impossible. Besides, it might stop him from making such a mess in there mother's house.

"Well, with no other humans here, there's no one watching for the Pokemon food they keep outside. I mean, the pellets you mentioned, that the Pokemon here eat. If you'd like, I can try to get some for you? I know there's a bag not too far." Hopefully her neighbors wouldn't mind her taking a little. After all, she needed an excuse to get outside, so she could look for anyone else. She couldn't be the o my on left.

Whatever Flare had planned for the egg, it didn't turn into any recognizable style of breakfast be it poached or hardboiled. Perhaps a restaurant could get away with calling it scrambled. Unevenly scrambled with little bits of egg shell scattered about for the added crunch. The Growlithe gave the yellow-black puddle an experimental lick, and decided to leave his creation for someone else. It didn't taste terrible, but the texture was strange. Why settle with anything but the best when he had an unlimited stock of other food to chose from?

He had only half listened to Luna's rebuttal about the world beyond the woods, as he tended to do with anyone who didn't agree with him. Sure there were a few things interesting out there. But whenever he went about looking for something truely interesting, he always came up short. And if he couldn't find what he wanted, he was willing to write everything else as passe. Perhaps fire stones were just a myth?

"Sure, kid, that sounds better than this slop. There's gotta be a lot of other cool stuff around here, have you ever been in any of these human places except your own?" Flare asked, already turning his back on the burnt egg. Maybe this Luna wasn't so bad after all. Her life of being a prisoner must have made her awfully meek. Flare sure didn't mind.

Luna glanced over the cooked egg. Well, somewhat overcooked and somewhat undercooked. Either way, it really didn't look very good. It was no wonder Flare didn't really want to eat it after that. It probably didn't taste anything like she would have made as a human. It didn't seem like he was very interested in her idea of the rest of the region. Well, she Hought it was all interesting, but she supposed not everyone thought like that.

She thought about his response. Slip? The egg were perfectly fine before he went and torched them. Still, she didn't argue, or correct him. She took a few steps towards the door, being slow so she wouldn't step on her necklace that was now too long. She wished she left with her family; she wouldn't be a Vulpix, her necklace would fit, and sh wouldn't be so very confused right now. She shrugged herself off that line of thought.

"Only a couple, and even those few times were a while ago. Not that it matters much at this point; I was thinking of the food they stored outside. I mean, usually they're outside to watch it, and keep wild Pokemon out, but I really don't think it's a huge deal now. I mean, who else is around to eat it all?" she reasoned. Better it easy eaten than go o waste. She knew the house right next to her kept it outside, in a plastic tub, usually with the lid on tight. A little prying would get it open, she knew, if she could do it right.

However, she did run into one other problem when she reached he door. She sat back down, staring up at the doorknob, now well out of reach. This would never have been a problem if she was still human. Or even if she was a much taller Pokemon.

"Or maybe we go back to the window...unless you can turn that knob?" she asked, looking back to Flare. He was a big bigger than she was. She wasn't sure he could reach, though.

"Or maybe that window really is a better idea..." She stood back up, looking back to her bedroom.

Thinking nothing of the mess they were leaving behind, Flare followed Luna towards the door. He was curious about the way she talked about the tub of food, and the question was begged about why there wouldn't be any other beast around here to eat it. Surely not all of the Pokemon were gone too? After all, she was still here. And he couldn't have been the only curious critter to come on in and have a look around when the humans beat it. "You sayin' that there's no one else around?" he asked, revealing his thoughts.

Arriving at the wooden wall, Flare gazed up at the shiny brass knob that allegedly turned. The growlithe had seen doors open before, but he had never been close enough to know how. He just figured he had never pushed hard enough. Still, the knob was fairly high, probably about three or four of him tall. Not high enough that he couldn't reach it without a determined effort. After all, pidgy eggs were never THAT close to the ground. He had made higher leaps before to earn his breakfast.

"Heh, missie, I dunno what you prisoned pokemon would do if you actually had to live in the woods. Food tastes a lot better when you have to earn it!" Flare explained smartly, ignoring the fact he had settled for a pretty easy meal earlier when it was handed to him from the fridge. Maybe that is why it didn't taste so good.

Backing up as far as he could down the cramped hall, Flare figured he would show off a little with a running leap. He trotted a brief ways before galloping straight at the door, preparing for his paws to leave the ground. Unfortunately for the presuptious puppy, slick indoor floors didn't provide the same purchase as rough forest loam, and no sooner had he tried to leave the ground that his paws slipped and he hit it. Falling on his belly, he slid forward a few more lengths before gently bumping into the door. Well, maybe what Luna said wasn't such a bad thing. No one was around to see.

Luna only briefly glanced at the mess, deciding she'd clean it up later. When she was human again, anyway. See stepped back, watching Flare, curious. H was going to try? Well, he certainly had a better chance of opening the door than he did. Why did she have to become such a small Pokemon? Oh well. She winced, however, as he slipped and hit the floor, landing on his belly.

"Oh...are you alright?" she asked, standing back up to take a tiny step towards him. Not really enough to get too close, just enough to look and see for herself. She figured he couldn't be hurt too bad. He also seemed pretty confident that he needed to earn his food. Perhaps he was used to trying new things GS like this, just to feed himself. It seemed pretty rough, he thought, but maybe he thought otherwise? In any case she was sure they weren't getting through the front door.

"Umm...I guess it's the window, then?" she suggested, turning back towards her bedroom. Door knobs weren't meant for most Pokemon to use, anyway. They were designed for humans. She wondered if there was a way around that, just in case. She has thought once before about asking her mother about a small flap, for her own Pokemon to come and go. Maybe she needed to revisit the thought when she was human again.

"Other houses might be easier to get into. Some have smaller holes in the bottom o their doors, with a flap, so their Pokemon can come and go whenever. If we can't get into the pellets, maybe we can try that next." Even as she mentioned it, though, she was unsure. That was trespassing, even if they were Pokemon. Clearly there were going to be a lot of changes in store. She wondered briefly if she would have to reveal herself to Flare as a human. But, well, she still didn't know his opinion. The one thing she was sure of, it wasn't good. Not when he believed all Pokemon that were loyal to humans were prisoners.

With little injured besides his pride, Flare rebounded in a moment. Scrabbling up to his four paws, the Growlithe turned himself right and nodded a curt consent to Luna's suggestion. Perhaps why this was why so many Pokemon remained stuck in this village, the windows were kept locked and the doors were completely unusable! Well, save these supposed ones with flaps. Knowing humans, they were probably too small to get out of anyway. Still, he couldn't feel too bad, after all, the Vulpix didn't even try. Maybe she had tried before, and it didn't work. The Growlithe assuaged his dignity with that amusing thought.

Returning to the bedroom, it was only a matter of a moment to copy her earlier movements from the floor and onto the bed. Giving a sideways glanced at the pillow he had ripped up earlier, he decided against his initial plan of bringing one back with him. It would never fit inside his den. "So what do you do in here all day? I'd sleep it away if I had a pad like this, kid," Flare asked, swaying slightly with the give of the mattress.

While waiting for her reply, Flare left the bed and cleared the short gap to the night stand, returning to the window which had let him in. Waiting for the Vulpix to follow him, he would hop down as soon as he was sure she was following him. Couldn't let his guide get stuck in her own house!

Luna watched Flare jumping on to the bed, hoping nothing else would be destroyed. Not that she could do anything if he had decided to. Fortunately, he only proceeded to head towards the window. With a.
Tiny sigh of relief, she jumped to follow him. What did she do all day? She wasn't entirely sure how to answer him. It wasn't like she did anything interesting, but she wasn't sure what a Pokemon would do all day that a human would. She thought about her answer as she watched him crawl through the window.

"I guess...not much. I mean, I help out around the home when I can...or just go for walks around town. If I slept all day I'd find myself in pretty big trouble. Hardly anyone here sleeps all day, human or Pokemon," she answered, jumping to the table. She looked down at the ground from the window for a moment before jumping out. She had never actually gone through a window before, and was so sure she would never have to. But, then, she was sure nothing like this would ever happen, either. With this thought returned the thought that sh had no idea how to be a Pokemon. She probably couldn't even use attacks like a Pokemon. She tried to shrug that thought off again. Worrying wasn't going to help.

Instead, she turned and started walking to the neighbors house. She paused, looking at the tub where she knew the Pokemon food was kept. Stealing was something she had never wanted to resort to, but where else was she going to get the pellets Flare was so interested in? She hesitated, then reached her front paws up, pressing her nose against the edge of the lid. She strained to move the lid the way she knew it was supposed to. The problem was, she was looking at it from a different angle. As she worked, she decided to ask her own question.

"And what about you? What does a wild Pokemon do all day?" It took a few minutes, but finally the lid had been removed. She sat, heaving a small sigh. That didn't take early as much effort when she was human! She turned to look back at Flare.

"The bag is in there. Even if it's not open, it should tear open fairly easily."

Sitting down on the ground as Luna worked with the container, Flare began to groom the back of his paw. As he licked his fur, he stopped mid swipe to answer the Vulpix's question, leaving the fur sticking up at a vertical angle. Looking at her curiously, he shrugged. It sounded weird to say it, everything he did was so routine that he almost imagined that other Pokemon should have no problem guessing it. "Well, the I think all "wilds" do the usual things. Hunt for pidgys, run from enemies, impress the ladies. As for me, I like to come spy on the humans. They drop some pretty cool things some times. You should come check out my collection, kid. Maybe you can tell me what they do, since you're their stuff all day," Flare said with a grin, watching her continue to struggle with the lid. Why did the humans make things that were so hard to use?

Eventually, Luna conquered the bin, and Flare listened to her instructions regarding the prize within. Why was the food so hard to get? Layer after layer after layer. It would be easier for everyone if there wasn't so much packaging.

The fire Pokemon tore into the bag, going head first and using his teeth. He could smell the food inside, it didn't really smell like anything he expected. Kind of...not fresh? Dry? He'd see soon enough. He spat out paper as it came off in shreds, and he did quite a number on top of the bag until it finally relented its contents. A bunch of brown pellets. Well, home-body Pokemon seemed to like them, so maybe they weren't that bad?

He stuck his head in the aperture, and pulled it out chewing. Crunchy, that was always nice. Very dry, like he expected. Kind of tasted like...plants. Like he was eating a mouthful of dry autumn leaves, that had been compacted into a pellet. Nothing like the savor of a stantler. Though of course, these were much easier to get. He swallowed the pellets and pulled a face. "Well, if this is what you eat all day, kid, I'm sorry. Humans torture you worse than I thought," Flare said, hopping out of the tub.

Luna watched him eating, considering his answer. It sounded like it was pretty much all about survival, and the continuation of the net the generation. She supposed this seemed normal for wild Pokemon. After all, they didn't have he advantages of living with pope; easy food, regular grooming with little to no effort. All except for spying on the humans. She wasn't sure how many wild Pokemon did any spying. At the same time, Hough, that seemed like it might be rather normal as well. She had seen a few wilds, but it had seemed like they were looking for food. What if they were just curious, like Flare seemed to be?

"Sure. If the chance ever shows itself, I'll tell you what everything is used for. Well, as much as I know, anyway." Most of her days were nothing but running errands. She didn't have much chance to see what everyone else did. She knew there were probably a few things she didn't know much about, but she could try, at least.

She winced a little at the criticism of the wild Pokemon. Was it really that bad? And here she had been feeding it to her Pokemon regularly. Maybe something had to be done about that. She suddenly felt very bad for her own Pokemon.

"Is it really that bad? I usually eat human food...I don't think I even know what it tastes like." She hesitated, but jumped up, nearly falling in the process. She stared at the pellets before trying one. She regretted it. It was pretty bad. Perhaps she should have put more thought into making her own food, fresh, from berries. Well, there wasn't much she could do about it now. She allowed herself to fall back onto the ground, glancing at Flare, and then at the ground.

"Actually, if the opportunity does arise to look at this collection, out could help me out a bit? I...I don't know how to survive in the wild, and with humans gone...you know, I don't even know how to use any fire attacks, either. I've never been in a fight personally, so....I just...don't know anything..." she said, embarrassed. She was certain any other Pokemon would laugh if they didn't know she was human before. Now, Flare had seemed nice so fr, if a little stubborn, but she wasn't entirely sure how he'd react to this one.

Flare became more curious every passing moment about his Vulpix. She usually ate human food? What kind of spoiled pet had she been? Well, perhaps it wasn't THAT out of the ordinary for humans to feed their Pokemon from their own larders, but from what the Growlithe had seen domestic Pokemon tended to eat these terrible pellets. She didn't seem terribly excited about the prospect of being free, either. Rather, Luna seemed rather hesitant about the whole thing. Perhaps because her easy life of comfy pillows and human food was being threatened. Shameful how she was raised.

Still inside the food box, Flare lifted his front paws up on the edge of the container so that he could look down at his companion. Before he could make a joke about the funny face she had pulled when she had tried the food, she suddenly admitted how incapable she was. Well, given everything she had said so far, it wasn't that much of a surprise. But not knowing how to fight? Hogwash. Every Pokemon knew how to do that. He wasn't about to start babysitting her so that she could relearn how. He just had to show her she already knew.

"Psh, I betchya know a lot more than the humans told you to think, kid," Flare said with a smirk. Without warning, the growlithe propelled himself out of the box, his front paws digging forward on the plastic surface so that he could hurl forward, right into tackling Luna. Intending to tackle her to the ground, Flare spoke during the middle of his attack. "C'mon, defend yourself!" He had to admit he enjoyed an early morning scuffle.

Luna looked up at Flare. He almost didn't seem to believe it. She supposed that was to be expected. After all, who had ever heard of a Pokemon that couldn't fight? Or perhaps he just didn't believe that she had been so sheltered that she didn't know how to fight. Either way, she had told the truth. And, after hearing his response, she shoo her head. What humans had told her to think? Clearly this Growlithe didn't think too much of humans at all.

She blinked and looked back to Flare, hearing him again. Defend herself? It didn't take long to figure out what he was talking about. Instead of defending herself, she turned to run. However, she tripped on her necklace, falling face first onto the ground. And she hadn't even moved a full step away, so she was hit by Flares attack.

She didn't move at first, staring into nothing. This was what her Pokemon had been through? Every battle she had put then through, and she never really thought about it. Finally, she stood up. Granted, she knew it could probably be much worse, but at least she understood better now. She looked back to Flare. Now she just needed to figure out how to defend herself.

"I'm sorry, first battle, remember? We can try again. I'll do better. I hope..."

Tackling Luna was seemingly like tackling a paper wall, there was practically no resistance. Having gained extra momentum from his downward leap, the attack had hit a bit harder than he would have liked. He liked scuffling, not maiming. Thankfully, the Vulpix seemed like she was still able to stand. What was her deal? Sure he had cheapshotted her a little bit, but she didn't even stand her ground. Bah, maybe there was something to that flight part of the fight-or-flight instinct. She'd be better off running, especially if she figured out that necklace.

"Heh, betters about the only thing you can do after a show like that," Flare commented unhelpfully. Still, he did want her in a good mood so she would come see his treasure trove, and so he decided to offer her an olive branch.

"One thing is for sure, that bauble about your neck ain't helping. It's like you forgot how to wear this morning," the Growlithe said with a grin. The solution was obvious, so he thought. She just needed to double up the chain. Granted, that it is pretty hard to do on your own with just your paws. Perhaps her owner used to do that for her? Still, it was going to be a long walk through the forest if she was tripping every ten paces. He walked over to her, with little regard to her personal space. Gently grabbing a section of the chain and twisted his head so that it would make a loop, he took the slack circle and placed it on the crown of her head. All she would have to do is shake her head and the loop should drop down to her neck, cinching up the necklace.

"Any better? At least you want be battling your jewelry now, too. Try tackling me now," Flare said after taking a few steps back. He stood at an at-ease position, mildly amused to see what her attempt was going to look like.

Luna glanced at the necklace when he mentioned it was in her way. That was true, but her paws didn't work like hands, and she refused to leave it behind. She flinched a little as the Growlithe invaded her personal space. The only reason she didn't move away or complain was because she was a Pokemon now. What if this was normal among wild Pokemon? And what if she only managed to insult him by saying something? But she was relieved to find that all he did was help double the chain up. She moved her head so that the loop slid to her neck. That was much better. She took a few short, small, experimental steps. It wouldn't trip her now.

"Much better, thank you. Now I shouldn't be tripping all over the place." But then he was suggesting that she attack. She hesitated, thinking back to her own Pokemon. How had they performed a tackle attack? A run, and a jump, and tackling. But there was one little problem. She could barely walk as a Pokemon. Could she even run? What had her Pokemon looked like running.? She had jumped, though; maybe she just needed to try. She watched Flare, and then started to run. Or rather, tried to. She stumbled briefly over her own paws once. This was harder than it looked. And while she managed to run, it was a little comical to watch, since her movements were somewhat exaggerated.

She jumped towards him once she got closer, but misjudged the distance between herself and Flare, and the strength of her jump. That is, she jumped too soon, too short, and only hit the ground. She stood up, shaking her head. How had she managed to mess that up? She looked back to Flare.

"I'm not so sure you were right...I think that might have been worse, not better..."

It was a rather pathetic showing, Flare had to admit. He didn't know why he was still bothering with her. Here he was, coming into the middle of human territory for the first time, and he was getting stuck trying to teach some house pet how to stay alive. It wasn't what he thought he would be doing today, to say the least. The Growlithe had to admit he was quite fascinated by her situation. A Pokemon born in captivity now taking the first steps in freedom. It was a noble thing to help her out. But nobility is something that sounds nice when others do it, its hard when you have to do it yourself.

"Bah, I'm never wrong! For one thing, this time you didn't run away. You'll never get much of what you want if you always turn tail. No one here to feed you now, kid" Flare replied, pacing a few steps as he spoke.

Still, he didn't think that Luna was in that dire of straights. From what he had seen, she had a whole house full of food, and no one to share it with. The most assertive thing she would have to do is figure out how to open that fridge door. Still, living in a gilded cage was no place to be, Flare thought. What if the humans came back? Surely they would sometime, perhaps in as little as a few days. This Vulpix could be giving up her freedom if she pouted about here a few days until her trainer came back. What a squandered chance! Perhaps he should show off the virtues of the wild life a bit. But first she would have to help him. He was dying to know what that glass thing on the wall of his den was.

"C'mon kid. Let's go back to the woods, we can talk more about your moves on the way. I got all this human stuff you gotta tell me how they use."
