Miranda sat on the window seat of her chambers in Ethanova Castle with a thin book open in her lap. The room in which she sat was decorated with blue tapestries embroidered with golden patterns. Rich mahogany bookcases and ornate tables coupled with chairs lined the walls save for the space that was occupied by the bed and armoire. The rest of the castle was decorated in a similar fashion to her chambers.

She looked out the window and surveyed the area around the castle. It was settled upon a small mountain, taking up the entire peak. The sea was only a short distance away from the castle and Miranda enjoyed watching the sun reflect off of it like a mirror.

A servant knocked on her door and then opened it, “Your majesty, there is someone who has come to see you. A member of the guard has received urgent reports that must be immediately attended to.”

Miranda nodded and closed her book, tossing it onto the window seat. Standing up she walked past the servant and added, “Thank you, my dear. I’ll be on my way now!” She smiled at the man before making her way to the red sitting room.

The door to the room was already open so she entered. Sitting in a chair close to the door waited a middle-aged man. Immediately upon her entrance into the room he stood up and bowed deeply, to which Miranda responded with, “There’s no need for that,” and a closed-lip smile.

“What might you have come to inform me off?” Miranda gracefully pulled a chair out next to him before anyone could do it for her, and sat down.

The man’s face flushed red in embarrassment because he had let her pull her own chair out, “I, uh, have this list of missing persons. In the last week or so people have been disappearing. Some of the names are alarming…” he said as he handed her a scroll.

Lounging back, she unrolled the scroll and read the names, “Cinderella, oh she’s a dear friend of mine… Alice Liddell,” she paused remembering Alice’s help in her ascension to the throne, “Prince Charming… he and Cinderella must have disappeared at the same time otherwise I would have heard of it…” The list went on. Having seen enough she rolled the scroll up and said, “I’ll begin investigation on this at once, these poor people must want to return home soon…” Curtsying slightly to the man with a smile, she left the room as the man tried to bow back in a very flustered manner.

On her way to beach side gardens, she ran into a member of her court. In fact, it was just the man she was looking for, “Ah, Sir Percival!” She handed the scroll to him as she floated by, “I need you to investigate the disappearances of these people,” by the time she finished speaking she was a good distance down the hallway, “Thank you!” Miranda lightly waved as she turned a corner leaving the man with the list.

She continued on to the gardens in search of her son, Prince Ring, to warn him of the rampant disappearances. Ring often sat outside in the gardens with his beloved wife Princess Signy. As a result, Miranda was almost positive she would find them there.

Sarah slapped a copy of that day’s New York Times onto her desk and sighed as she stood up. The science and technology section was covering, yet again, research by KRI that was suspected of inhumane testing methods. Picking her jacket of the back of her chair and grabbing her purse she began to walk down to a restaurant that she frequented for lunch.

KRI was always under suspicion of malpractice, but they were never caught. Their lawyers were slippery and always got them out of a pinch. It infuriated Sarah—it was beyond her how they could bring themselves to use the most ruthless methods possible. There were always other ways to do it.

Preoccupied with her thoughts, she arrived at the restaurant without even realizing it. Her usual table was in the back corner, somewhat removed from the rest of the restaurant. As usual, that table was open so the hostess showed her to the usual table.

It was a short walk to the beachside gardens. As she suspected, Prince Ring and Princess Signy were expressing their love for each other in perceived privacy.

"My dear Ring! Signy! I have things to tell you!" Miranda yelled as she crossed the garden.
The two of them turned to look at her, clearly annoyed that she had in interrupted them, "What now, mother?" Prince Ring asked with an irritated tone in his voice, "Can't you see we're busy?"
Miranda lightly waved her hand, "Yes, yes, I'm aware," she awkwardly sat down next to them, "I simply wanted to inform you of the disappearances of many people of all kinds. Cinderella, Prince Charming, Alice... Just be careful my dears. Please? For me?"

Prince Ring looked at Signy then back at Miranda, "Fine, we'll be careful."

Satisfied with his answer, she stood up and floated back towards the castle and the gardens situated outside the throne room.

The service at the restaurant was abnormally slow that day and Sarah began to look around for a waiter or waitress. There were a few bustling back and forth to the kitchen, but none of them were paying attention. The only one who wasn't rushing around was a blond waitress who was waiting on a few men in suits. She had seen the girl a few times before on her various visits to the restaurant, nut she had never been her waitress. Sarah stared at her hoping she would leave the table so she could flag her down to order.

Sarah struggled to not laugh in Lydia's face. She was so incredibly rude and conceited it was laughable--she couldn't have been in this job long. She probably wouldn't be in it much longer if she kept talking like that.

"Just a BLT and a lemonade. Thanks." She closed the menu and handed it to Lydia.

Sarah ate her food quickly--she needed to get back to work. After she finished she put down correct change for the food and got up to leave. At the exit the restaurant owner, whom she'd come to know from her many visits to the restaurant over the past year or so, stopped her, "How was the service today?"

Sarah debated on wether she should lodge a complaint or not. Quickly, she decided it would be in the restaurant's best interests, "The food was fine, but the service was... rude to say the least."

"How so?" Asked the owner. Sarah then elaborated on what Lydia had said to her and added, "I suspect I'm not the first, or the last, to complain about things this."

The restaurant owner sighed heavily, "You're probably the 100th person to complain. Maybe more."

It was just as Sarah had suspected, "Oh my, that's quite a few. You might want to take care of that then--your restaurant's reputation might go down."

"Oh believe me, it already has."

Sarah nodded and slightly waved as she pushed open the front door, "Good luck, then. I have to get back to work."

-----------------------------------------

The restaurant owner walked back into the staff only area to look for Lydia. Her shift was almost over so he was sure to find her there. He tapped her on the shoulder, "Lydia, we need to have a little chat." He sat down in a chair without giving her a chance to object to their talk, "We've tried to be nice, we know you're a student trying to support yourself, but your attitude is unacceptable. The number of complaints we've received about you is astounding. I can't imagine you have no idea about what they were about. You're required to be respectful to all customers unless they have done something wrong. None of them have, ever. Because of your attitude the number of customers has gone down, reviews have gotten worse. Our service has begun to gain a terrible reputation. We can't tolerate it anymore. As a result you don't need to come in anymore. You can pick up your last paycheck on Friday."
